Expanded list of Sami people

You may also be interested to know I have expanded the List of Sami people based on all the related categories. Please add any other names of people covered by the EN wiki which I have not included. Thank you so much! I'll try to get around to it within the next couple of weeks, especially since I just received a huge, fabulous list from someone in one of the Saami communities. Also I changed the list so it's people who are Sami or of Sami descent irregardless of where they were born since a lot of the community is in areas outside of the so-called traditional area. -Yupik (talk) 13:13, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

We spoke today about orthographies in Cameroon, and how are they helpful or not.

What I know about this comes mostly from this very interesting article: Bird, Stephen. 2001. "Orthography and Identity in Cameroon.". It is linked from the Wikipedia article General Alphabet of Cameroon Languages.

Sara Wesslin

I've made a start on this. It would be good to have her date of birth (or just the year). I have not been able to find anything more on her success in receiving ministerial funding for education in the Sami languages. Ipigott: Oh wow, thanks! I'll try to find out what I can about her. If this had come out at the end of August, I could've just asked in person :D Since you seem to know some Finnish, maybe you can work out what they say about her in this article? It talks about how long she's been at Yle Sápmi and other things she's done. If you can't understand it, I'll try to get around to translatin the most relevant parts by tomorrow. Also your article made it into a FB post :) Some more articles about what she's been up to[1] (en) and [2] (fi), [3] (I'm pretty sure there's an English version of this one floating around somewhere), [4]. Found it. She's also been a board member of Suoma Sámi Nuorat rs (SSN), an NGO of young Saami in Finland. Her being on the BBC list has made it into all the major media channels in Finland such as the Helsingin Sanomat. -Yupik (talk) 16:51, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
@Ipigott: there's a problem with the BBC's article about her. It says that she secured funding for language teaching, but this is what she took the ministry on for.   • Thanks for your edits. I understand Swedish but not Finnish. Anything you think I have translated from Finnish comes from machine translation tools. I see someone changed her age to 27. Wikipedia biography standards

Hi. Please could you try and keep to the Wikipedia biography standards? I noticed that you added place of birth and death for Matti Ahde inside the brackets in the introduction. This is wrong in English wikipedia and I have corrected it. Deb (talk) 08:35, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Sorry, I assumed you weren't familiar with the English wikipedia biography standards, since you changed the article only after he appeared on Recent deaths. It was correct previously. Category for Sami women academics

I have been wondering whether it would be useful to create Category:Sami women academics in line with the other categories listed under Category:Women academics by ethnicity. It looks as if it might be rather difficult as we do not have Category:Sami academics or Category:Sami women. So perhaps a first step would be to create Category:Sami academics along the lines of Category:Sami-language writers with subcategories on Category:Finnish Sami academics, Category:Norwegian Sami academics, Category:Russian Sami academics and Category:Swedish Sami academics. Or maybe we could simply create Category:Sami academics like Category:Sami actors, categorizing it with Category:Sami people by occupation and Category:Academics by ethnicity. We could then create Category:Sami women academics as a non-diffusing subcategory. What do you think?--Ipigott (talk) 13:06, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

I think it's a great idea, but I'm not sure how many Saami academics we have on the enwiki and if there'd be enough to not end up facing speedy deletion right away. I'd leave off the ones by country or make them into Saami academics in Finland instead of Finnish Saami academic. -Yupik (talk) 19:30, 21 January 2020 (UTC)
OK, I've done what I can with these but as you say there are not many of them. I've kept to Cat Finnish Sami... etc., as that's the style used in parallel categories. Maybe more names will be revealed at the Sami education conference in May. Unfortunately, someone will eventually move the country-based ones because they are not correct. The Saami are Saami, not Finns (unless their other parent is Finnish), so categorizing them as Finnish Sami academics is going to cause problems. Different issue, Sami academics is restricted to people who are Sami? Because we also have a lot of academics teaching Sami subjects who are not Sami. And thank you for creating those cats! -Yupik (talk) 12:59, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

General revision of Sami categories

I note you write Saami rather than Sami but a Google search shows that Sami is far more common in English. From what you say above, we need to take on a general revision of many of the Sami categories. Do you agree to the following?

Thanks for the ping, @Ipigott. I have three thoughts:
  1. my knowledge is limited to a brief reading of the article Sámi people. But from that, to seems to me that the whole question of nationality of the Sami seems to have a history of controversy and repression. My own personal preference is strongly against telling anyone what their nationality or ethnicity is, but the test here is not views, it's WP:NPOV ... which means a balance of the reliable sources. From what I have learnt so far, I am unsure whether "Swedish Sami people" or "Sami people in Foo" better fits that test. I may be persuaded to take a view, but I'd need to see the case, and until I oppose change.
  2. The format "Sami-language writers in Sweden" is problematic for navigation, because the position of the occupation in the middle of the nationality/ethnicity/location info breaks naming conventions, and makes tools such as {{Fooian fooers}} unusable. Naming coventions are not iron laws, and exceptions do apply (e.g. for NPOV reasons, we have Category:People from Northern Ireland rather than the conventional en.wp format of "Northern Irish people") ... but I would oppose breaking the convention unless the breach is necessary to avoid inaccuracy or POV problems.
  3. Any move should be proposed at WP:CFD, with all the categories listed and tagged, a clear statement of the reasons for the change, and neutral notifications to relevant WikiProject. Please do NOT move the categories without a CFD discussion.
    The procedure for nominating a big bunch of categories like this is complex and not user-friendly. I use some techniques which make this easy for me, but most editors don't have that. I wouldn't want those technical issues to stand in the way of anyone making a nomination ... so if anyone wants to make their case at CFD, then I will be happy to help by making a neutral nomination, so that others can add their rationales in their !votes. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:10, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
The Saami people from X is the form the Saami themselves prefer. They've been saying for instance "sápmelaš politihkkár Norgga bealde", which means "Saami politician from X". So the issue is that they consider themselves to be first and foremost from Sápmi, then because other people require it, from some country. The same issue arises with their names too: they have a Saami name and then there's the one that shows up in the colonialistic systems of the country that they live in. -Yupik (talk) 16:15, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
Just remembered to look back at this. I fully understand their feelings but unfortunately all their biographies categorize them by country. As far as I can see, this is also the case for the other language versions of Wikipedia. Ethnicity vs. nationality

Rosiestep: Thanks for drawing our attention to the discussion. I am fully aware of the problem of nationality vs. ethnicity in connection with the Samis. Not long ago, I made a proposal for introducing new categories based on ethnicity rather than nationality but this did not appear to be acceptable. It certainly seems to be the case that most Samis would prefer to be recognized first and foremost by ethnicity but this is somewhat complicated by the fact that the majority are connected to national organizations related to politics, education, the media or sports. So it looks to me as it we'll just have to live with things as they are for the time being.--Ipigott (talk) 10:24, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

@Ipigott:. Are citations from stuff written about in that publication ok? For example, an article from it was cited in this newspaper article. Kotus, i.e. The Institute for the Languages of Finland and its counterpart in Sweden Institute for Language and Folklore. It's discussed in the book that all students of Saami studies has to read in Finland. Yle news coverage: [10], [11], [12]. It's been considered to be of such a good quality that it's been used in the mother tongue portions of the Finnish matriculation exams for Inari Saami and Northern Saami. Some more: [13], [14], [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21], [22], [23], [24]. Also. it's frequently misspelled as SAMI DIEDALAS AIGECALA outside of the Saami-speaking world. It's just been explained to me that it's not an AfD, simply a prod for notability. Perhaps you can improve the article on the basis of the above or simply explain the background on the talk page. I'm no expert with Sami publications myself. In this connection, you may be interested to know that this is just one of many recent articles on the Samis by Tcr25. Thank you both. I added two more citations as to the role of SDÁ in building Sámi languages as languages of research and science, but I don't think it will change Randykitty's opinion. In general, as I understand his objections, he's looking for coverage of the journal itself, not citations of papers it's published, or for evidence that it's included in a selective index of publications (which I would think NSI Level 2 status would qualify as, but ...) Part of the problem is that I cannot access any library books that might discuss SDÁ right now since the libraries they are in are closed because of the pandemic. The other part is the same problem we see for pretty much any indigenous or minority publication not in English, which is non-coverage outside of the community itself and a lack of understanding of the importance of the publication to the scientific community (and the community in general) that uses the language(s). -Yupik (talk) 14:03, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
I think your second point hits the nail right on the head. "Notability" isn't always going to be immediately evident based solely on English-language sources, but that doesn't make something non-notable, especially when talking about "small" languages/communities. I would like to nominate Editor Yupik because of their work associated with indigenous people, specifically the Sami. It should be of interest and noted that Yupik has worked more on the Sami and Finnish wikis than on the English version. Fellow editors have learned more about indigenous people and how to write about their own culture by seeing Yupik's personal work and cultural advocacy. In addition to writing articles, Yupik has uploaded many images and helped others understand the culture of Wikipedia so that things are done right when creating and improving articles within this focus. They are also very active with Wikidata in this regard. User:Ipigott and User:Megalibrarygirl provided seconds for this nomination
