I just finished copyediting the Robert White article, as per your GOCE request. One few comment:

• Please clarify the sentence "White also played a prominent role through the discharge of what he considered his duty, during the case of Elihu Gregg." I could not really make heads or tails of it.

Category:Calhoun family

Thank you for creating Category:Calhoun family. I recently created John C. Calhoun II and I think his father may be sufficiently notable to have his own page. I am especially interested in the fact that they seem to have moved to Pasadena, California after the civil war, probably thanks to railroad investments. However, I was wondering if you would be interested in starting a family tree. John C. Calhoun had ten children apparently, so it gets very confusing. Let me know if you can help. William B. Cornwell Copy Edit Question

Hi West Virginian:

I'm in the midst of completing the CE you requested of this article. In the section Legal Eduction and Career this paragraph appears at the end of the section:

In August 1908, Cornwell predicted in a newspaper interview that Democratic Party West Virginia gubernatorial candidate Louis Bennett would win the state's 1908 gubernatorial election by 25,000 votes against Republican Party candidate William E. Glasscock.[12] Glasscock went on to win the 1908 election, and served one term as Governor of West Virginia from 1909 to 1913.

This does not appear to me to relate to the section at all - or even to the article itself. I will delete it and save that edit on its own so that you can easily revert it if I have missed something. Regards. Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:16, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Twofingered Typist, thank you for engaging in yet another copyedit for William B. Cornwell. I just reviewed the article and I see that you removed the portion in question, and I'm alright with its omission. Everything looks to be in order, however, I can't find any sources that would support abbreviating Winchester and Western Railroad Company as WWRC and Winchester Lumber Corporation as WLC, so I may modify those slightly. West Virginian: Thanks for your appreciation of the copy edit. I wanted to explain why I chose to abbreviate the company names. Since the paragraphs in the article are relatively short I thought there would be no confusion for a reader if I created an acronym for each company. Since the company names often appeared multiple times in a paragraph, and sometimes in consecutive sentences, the acronyms provided a smoother read so to speak. I admit that I do not know if an entity has to create its own acronym before it can be used but, as an example, I often see ISS in articles relating to the International Space Station although nobody uses the acronym when referring to it. Romney Literary Society

Hi there - I am currently undertaking the copy edit of Romney Literary Society. If there are any issues, I will let you know at the conclusion, but I just wanted to comment that you have done some good work on this article. I am quite enjoying it! -Pax Verbum 21:32, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

I am done with the copy edit. Only a couple of minor details remain I think:

• In "Final years", the article states that there were no records from 1872 to 1878. However, shortly after, the same paragraph states that the last recorded meeting was in 1876. I wasn't sure how to reconcile those two statements to makes things a bit more clear.

• The last recorded meeting was in 1886, but there was a gap in records between 1872 and 1878. These records are not extant, so this could either mean that no meetings took place, or that the records have since disappeared. -- West Virginian (talk) 10:20, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

• The lede seems a bit long. It would be helpful if it could be trimmed or paragraphs combined. In particular, it seems to get very detailed regarding events central to the society's history.

Regarding your recommendation, the table was created by another editor on the existing article. I did not find single sources that would capture all the information of each column. However, I think what was done previously follows the manual of style for television listings. Thoughts on username change?

Hi,
I know you've changed your username before. I was thinking about changing mine, and I was wondering whether you could give me some insight into the process, like were you happy with the name change? How long did it take/was it difficult to get other editors to recognize you again? How long does it take to take effect? Any responses would be helpful. BenLinus1214, when I decided that I wanted to change my username, I consulted Wikipedia:Changing username to see what the process entailed. Once I posted my proposed new username on that age, the username change happened the same day; and all my previous username pages were redirected to pages with my new username. All my previous signatures on other pages will remain the same, but users will be redirected to my new username page if they were to click it. It takes some folks a bit of time to get used to the new username, but I had tired of the old username and was ready for a change! First, thank you for the Barn Star! It was a nice surprise. Regarding your edit to Flag of West Virginia [1]

1) specifically regarding placement of the period at the end of a quote, I was going by the Wikipedia Manual of Style, MOS:LQ, second paragraph, which reads:

• Where a quotation is a sentence and coincides with the end of the sentence containing it, terminal punctuation should normally be placed inside the closing quotation mark. Where the quotation is a single word or fragment, terminal punctuation should be placed outside.

This is somewhat different from what I learned growing up in the U.S., that terminal punctuation is normally placed inside the closing quotation marks. I've had to get used to the distinction that is made. (I've had discussions with other editors who think "fragment" means anything that is less than the sentence in the original text while I and Rothorpe believe "fragment" means a grammatically incomplete sentence.)

2) The other two are just matters of style and word usage, so of course it is your choice. I just wonder whether using "motion" and "moved", two forms of the same word, in such close proximity is good style. I thought we would normally say, "X moved to table the discussion", but "X made a motion to table the discussion", not "X moved a motion to table the discussion". Your sentence is the third one, written in passive voice. But it's up to you. CorinneSD (talk) 15:45, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Gabriel Jones (Virginia)

Hello, WV! I have a few questions about Gabriel Jones (Virginia), but since I don't know (or don't remember) whether this is approaching FA status, I don't want to add too many "clarification needed" templates with hidden notes to editors, so I thought I'd ask them here.

1) In the third paragraph of the lede, it says,

• Jones served as the Clerk of Court for Hampshire County, Virginia...

I thought the title was usually "Clerk of the Court". Perhaps it varies from state to state (or has changed over time). Assuming that "Clerk of Court" is correct, I noticed that usually you wrote, "served as Clerk of Court", but in the last paragraph in Gabriel Jones#Hampshire County Clerk of Court tenure, you have "served as the Clerk of Court". I would choose one wording and make sure it is consistent.

For Hampshire County, "Clerk of Court" is the formal name and "Court Clerk" is the informal name. For consistency's sake and per your guidance, I've changed all mentions to "the Clerk of Court." -- West Virginian (talk)

2) In the paragraph about Jones' early years, it says that the father's death precipitated the family's return to England where the mother had the daughter, Elizabeth, who was born in 1721, baptized in 1727. But it also mentions a younger brother, John, who was born in 1725. It's just a bit confusing. I guess Elizabeth was baptized when she was five or six years old. Perhaps it would help to clear it up if the year of the father's death were given.

The records are a little murky, and I was not able to find the year of his father's death; but it occurred while they were in Virginia, and precipitated the family's return to England. I've wondered why his sister was baptized so late as well, but I wonder if it was a sacrament that the family had put off while they were in Virginia, where they were not in the best financial standing. -- West Virginian (talk) 13:55, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

3) In the paragraph that starts, "In April 1732", it states that Jones was admitted to a school called "Christ's Hospital". However, it doesn't mention whether that was his first schooling or what level of schooling it was. Do you think the link at "Christ's Hospital" is sufficient? Also, later in that paragraph it says, "On April 12, 1739, he was discharged from the institution", but it doesn't say why. A little later it mentions that the family was "of limited means", but is the reader to guess that that was the reason why he was discharged from the school?

Records do not indicate whether Jones had previous education, but I assume he was educated at home while in Virginia and during their first years in England. Christ's Hospital is a free charitable school for pupils of limited means, and it continues to be to this day. It is well known in England, and of course, less known in the United States. The wiki-link should suffice for readers that require more context. It looks like Jones was discharged from the school because he had completed his education, and was discharged so that he could be an apprentice to solicitor John Houghton. 4) At the end of the first paragraph in Gabriel Jones (Virginia)#House of Burgesses tenures, you mention "alongside George Fairfax". Then, at the beginning of the next paragraph you mention "alongside George William Fairfax. If these two are the same individual, perhaps you should change the full name and link to the first mention.

George Fairfax and George William Fairfax are indeed two separate people in the same family. -- West Virginian (talk) 13:55, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

5) I suppose "Bogota" is the name of the house or estate where Jones lived and not the name of a town or village. Is that made clear somewhere? I see you've made it clear, but later, after you've already mentioned it several times. If you make it clear earlier, perhaps it doesn't need to be in quotation marks each time you mention it.

To sort of qualify Bogota, I did mention in this sentence that it was an estate: "In 1753, Jones relocated from Kernstown in Frederick County to his estate "Bogota" in Augusta County." So with this said, I took the quotes off Bogota in its succeeding mentions. Occasionally, estate has been added to remind the reader that Bogota is his residence. 6) Regarding his nickname, I don't think "The" needs to be italicized unless it was italicized then. His nickname was "The Valley Lawyer", or "the Valley lawyer". Of course if you disagree, please change it back.

7) In the last paragraph in Gabriel Jones (Virginia)#Landholdings is the following sentence:

• The original house erected and occupied by Jones was demolished shortly after the construction of a new residence at "Bogota".
