Melissa Breen

BlueMoonset asked me to contact you here regarding my concern about the article. Specifically, I am bothered by the passage (at then end) that says "In Asia, she finally set an Olympic A qualifying time in the 100 metre event in May 2012 with a time of 11.29 seconds. She ran the 100 metre event 27 times in 2012 before finally reaching the Olympic A qualifying time." My reading of the source (and other sources I found) indicates that she missed the Olympic A time by .002 seconds.

Additionally, I'm somewhat confused about whether she made it to London, given this this Canberra news story that indicates that she didn't go to London because her 4x100 relay team wasn't in the top 16. However, this page lists her in the Olympics 100 meters.

I have not corrected the article because I think it possible that you have some information or insight that isn't reflected in the cited sources -- and that will help you unsnarl these apparent contradictions. --Orlady (talk) 14:47, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't care much about your milhist credentials so much as I do about your ability to take photographs, successfully upload them to Commons and your ability to be here. :) If you can do those three things, it would be incredibly useful because it means you can be used for other things. ;) If you know others who might be interested in attending, they are welcome to attend. The details are not completely set in stone yet and it only became mostly confirmed today. I'm basically on indefinite leave from WM-AU's board for reasons John and Craig are both aware of. Hence, it has not been announced there yet, at least until the details are confirmed. This may be doable as it has been discussed. I think it could be something like you go in the morning and then they can set that up for the evening day of. Which day works better?

For those interested in attending, which day works better? The 25th or the 26th of August? I'm inclined towards the morning of 25 August as Hawkeye7 can then attend for an hour or so and knows the War Memorial pretty well, including the person organising it. I think the 25th is better as people can travel friday night and sunday leaving all day saturday to photograph as well as saturday night to spend time talking over a good meal and a few drinks. Hockey

Hey, i've seen you made a good amount of edits to the australian hockey team(s). When you want to create a template which is shown with the squad at the end of the article it's better to start a template than copy the whole "thing" to every article. I fixed it at some articles. The 2012 Olympics roster can be found here. Once everything is edited you simply copy the article name and place it in the articles between "{{" and "}}". Infrastructure Partnerships Australia

Infrastructure Partnerships Australia is the peak industry group for Australia’s infrastructure industry.

The organisation was formed in 2005 and has a membership comprised of Federal and state government departments and agencies and private sector contractors, financiers, investors and operators of infrastructure. The group’s Board is elected from senior public and private sector members.

Purpose:

Infrastructure Partnerships Australia was formed between the public and private sectors to provide research and policy to inform the public policy debate around solutions to national infrastructure challenges. The organisation’s early work programme focussed largely on the development of privately financed procurement models. More latterly, the organisation’s focus has broadened to span transport, utility and social infrastructure as well as public service delivery models. Infrastructure Partnerships Australia is a not for profit think tank. Leadership:

The group’s Chairman is the Hon Mark Birrell, a company director and lawyer, who formerly served as a senior Cabinet Minister in the Victorian Liberal Government, led by Jeff Kennett . 2016 Olympic Coverage

I do have experience as a journalist since receiving my degree from the Dwight Bentel School of Journalism decades ago. Better yet, I have experience covering Olympic Sports in Rio de Janiero. I was a producer for the only USA television coverage of the 2007 Pan American Games. I already know my way through the media back halls of the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange. [1] is my original photo, I obviously had a all access field pass. I also worked Athletics at the 1996 Summer Olympics and over 15 years for IAAF's USA based crew. I'm also a USATF Master Certified official. I was in charge of one of the officiating crews for the United States Olympic Trials (track and field), the selection for the USA Olympic Team. That said, my contributions to Wikipedia, primarily on the subject of athletics, come in bursts. I work in creative media. I released a film literally on the day before the Olympics this year, I have a TV series about to ramp up. When the undertow of that happens, I'll have to disappear. I'll do what I can. RE: Getting Wikimedians to the Olympic Games

Hi,

Couple of issues here. One thing was that I was very regular with the Summer Games just past (and also approached another editor for a overall cleanup we need now (also posted on WP Olympics)). I was also planning on the paralympics, but i am not sure of the tv coverage, so i may be limited to data input in stuff like powerlifting. But Im not sure on what you said about working at wikinews as WP doesnt allow original reporting. I dont think either one allows "original" reporting as such. Ive been sourcing all the updates i did (weightlifting, diving, modern pentathelon for women). Ive also worked extensively on the closing ceremony and 2016 articles creating the template and the pages for the new sports. Btw- i also think paralympics is a good idea as its generally undercovered. We should also add special olympics

Nice work with the interviews! I don't think many media will have done that. They add a nice personal touch. If you have time (because it would take a while), I would suggest maybe also typing them out as transcripts (if you haven't done so yet?); in some cases (such as the Solomon Islands coach), it's a little hard to hear. Fantastic! I wrote the Francis Kompaon article at the last Games, when he became the Pacific's first ever Paralympic medallist, and someone has done Iliesa Delana of course, but it would indeed be good to have articles on all the athletes - especially if the OPC can provide information. (I've also been doing the Pacific Island countries at the 2012 Paralympics on the French Wikipedia, where coverage of the Paralympics overall is much less than on the English Wikipedia, and I intend at least to write the articles on Kompaon and Delena there.) The French Wikipedia's admissibility criteria only accept articles on Paralympians if they've won medals. I've just finished writing the articles on Delana and Kompaon. I also started those on the Pacific countries at the London Paralympics, before the Games, and I've been updating them whenever I can. (Except Samoa; someone else started that one, and I may have to rework it a bit.) Here's what we have. If it can help raise awareness and interest in Vanuatu, that'd be great! Potential abuse of DYK

My bad. I know I had people go after me for COI because of my thesis topic related to social media with the Bieber thing. I also know for my own stuff, I have not been asked to write DYKs. They would prefer GAs or general across the board improvement to articles, to doing more historical work. I know I do them as DYK is a good thing for people who need goals. I promote them because I take pride in my editing. this might be a better more workable version of my thing. (And I've pretty much left DYK, and will stay away for a while on a large scale. I had a green tick taken away because it had too many sources, which was fixed by the secondary reviewer who took away the green tick. The secondary reviewer then said the hook was not supported by sources, you know, the sources the secondary took away because there were too many sources. This comes on top of having arbitrary criteria set up for my own DYKs, including they are not well written enough, and the MOS should be violated by putting things into poorly formatted, incomplete lists instead of prose, things randomly cut for not being encyclopedia worthy despite the fact that the facts connected to what makes the person notable in order to make the article SHORTER and not DYK eligible. I've had a secondary reviewer de-tick something, propose an alternative hook that changed two words and the secondary reviewer then say they are ineligible to complete the review because they proposed a hook in which two words, and nothing of major substance, was changed. I've lost one DYK because there was nothing interesting is in the article, and just because an article meets all the criteria for DYK and is submitted, it doesn't mean it needs to be a DYK because yawn, only possibly a boring hook.) --LauraHale (talk) 22:33, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Ah...What started that whole thread was when Panyd promoted the nom I'd just passed by Anne: Jews' Gate Cemetery. Reviewing her noms are a joy, because she's good at it. But Panyd had just seen one too many on Gilbralter and posted about it. I don't know how far you got in that thread, but farther down Panyd posted this the Gibraltar’s Director of Heritage, which makes it look like DYK has been somewhat duped. Writing DYKs is an art form and some people can do a really good job at it. (It is just like writing for GA or FAC. It is a skill you learn and then you specialise.) The tourist people can think they are getting something out of DYK, but I've been trying to determine the actual value of DYKs, and I'm having a hard time demonstrating value of DYKs as a way to bring attention to a topic and make people think about something who would otherwise NOT think about it. I've yet to be able to show real value for this. We had 59 Aussie Paralympians, more Aussie Olympians, the whole water polo team and the whole softball team for Australia. Yet there hasn't been any demonstrated value as a result of the DYK. She can feel duped, but I think the Tourist Board are more duped by the value of DYK if that is the case. --LauraHale (talk) 23:18, 14 September 2012 (UTC)

Sport in Australia

The MCG is much more than AFL. It's actually run by the Melbourne Cricket Club, the C in its name stands for Cricket, and the world's biggest Test Cricket crowds appear there every Boxing Day. I can understand that some Rugby League fans could see it as part of an evil AFL push, but it's more just a Melbourne thing. More Melbourne people go to just about any sport than in most cities. As an American you may be amused to know that my (very Aussie) dad played a few games of baseball there in the 1940s. And it was home to thousands of US troops during WWII. Reference parameters and pairs of things

Hi Laura, I noticed that you used the "author" parameter of {{cite book}} incorrectly at Fabian Blattman; it should only be used for people, not publishers. The publisher parameter is for noting the publisher; in the reference I corrected, it was the Australian Paralympic Federation. Also, "a pair of records" is not a good phrase; just saying "two records" would be much better. I understand that American English is a bit more permissive with those types of constructions than Australian English; almost any usage of"pair" besides a pair of socks/shoes/jeans or perhaps a pair of Emperor Penguins sounds frankly ridiculous in the latter dialect. I saw this in the next prep set and checked it out preparatory to moving the set to the queue and ... I'm afraid it has major problems. I was unable to discover why the revolutionaries' meeting place is called the devil's castle, and probing further led me to see that the plot summary is actually way too close to a translation of the Italian (except for one inaccuracy, which I have fixed). However, more importantly: The mention of Rise Stephens that you added refers to an opera by Virgilio Mortari of the same name; see it:Risë Stevens. (The Time link is broken but the text comes up on a Google search and clearly refers to an opera.) The film does not take place at La Scala (although it may be based on the opera's plot - I didn't look.) The supposed remake that is the hook fact, added by Dr. Blofeld, has a completely different plot - see the cited Italian source. It involves a woman bearing the Devil's daughter. I'm going to have to be cruel and pull the hook and reopen the nomination. Ideally someone has access to a physical book or two and can find material to put in instead - I am not questioning the notability of the film, but it's not a unique title, especially when translated. Elaborating: Subject-specific notability is important, and Gigs has argued for a more universal sport notability criteria, without considering different the local popularity of a sport. Second- and third-level football have different levels [avoid rep] of media coverage in Australia versus the UK. Cricket in the USA has different levels of media coverage compared to cricket in with India. Hence, sport-specific and regional criteria are necessary, and broad brush-strokes cannot be used for notability. His COI views indicate that someone at the MET should not contribute to Monet-related articles, while Serbian nationalists editing Serbia and Croatia articles have less inherent COI problems. His lack of active content creation, based on [not logical] edits to the main space and lack of involvement in processes, demonstrate a lack of [again, avoid close rep] knowledge dealing with these issues. If he does not have familiarity in sourcing articles across different countries, while insisting similarities existing, it strikes me as not being he is not equipped to deal with content level disputes. He's been active in that area in his comments [unclear]. Hence, this is a major concern."
