Tawkerbot2 problem today

I posted a notice at the help desk because I wasn't sure what happened on the Tropical Cyclone article. Now I see there is a bot and some of the same problems have been reported before.

Here's what happened: The bot reverted vandalism (page replaced with swearing), but it attributed the vandalism to "user talk DavidH" and it reverted one version too far, so my recent edits were lost. I fixed it manually. It also seems like it left a notice on my talk page, then reverted that. Thought you would want to know. DavidH 22:28, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

You know, the "user talk" ref also confused me. Might be better is the bot wrote the description to refer just to "User...." (without the word "talk"). It's a minor thing, but I thought, "How can my user talk be the author of the change that's being reverted?" I know the bot leaves a msg on the talk page, so it gets that link, but it looks a little weird in the history. Anyway, thanks again, good luck, and thanks for tackling the real vandalism problems. Tawkerbot2

Sorry about that, it was caused by the IRC recent changes feed giving incorrect diff links and because the bot uses that information to determine who to revert, it would revert to the older version and warn the wrong person. yes, wouldn't it be ironic if your bot passed rfa before you did :) of course it is premature, you'll need to optimize it and leave it running for a couple of months, maybe keeping a list of users it would have blocked. If you assume a blocking policy where the vandal is only blocked after his fourth vandalism within two hours or so, you will have very few false positives, if any. If you take into account the user's contribution and block log, say, block only users with few contributions, or with a log of being recently blocked by human admins, you will probably have no false positives at all. Under such circumstances, I can see a blocking bot being acceptable. New users blanking articles or writing "gay gay gay penis penis" are invariably vandals. It would have to leave a useful summary somewhere (VIP or AN/I) for easy review of its blocks. In fact, you could have it issue such notices even now, naming users it would have blocked, so people can keep track of its performance.

Having said all that, seeing that your rfa was turned down for no other reason than being premature, and seeing that you've been around for more than four months now, I see no reason not to resubmit you right now. dab (ᛏ) 08:09, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Interesting idea, having the bot issue blocks. I can see some people having issues with the very concept, so I think that, if you decide to persue this idea, running for a while a log of "would have blockeds" would be a critical step to gaining acceptance. OTOH, there is already at least one block-bot running (the anti-page move vandalism bot), so the basic idea is already in place. So maybe there would not be so much automatic resistance to the idea.

One concern would be how would the bot determine how long to block for? I see particular concern with shared IPs. And AOL IPs. In general admins handle shared IPs differently than other IPs. School IPs in particular. For instance, personally, I'm actually a little quicker to block a school IP, but will generally block them for a lot less time than I would block a similarly vandalizing regular IP. And blocking AOL IPs is pretty much useless. - TexasAndroid 15:54, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I turned off the bot as soon as I noticed that, but you caught my on an autoblock before I could remove the warning msgs :) - I'm going to have another look, I think I'm just going to have to add a "manually grab page history" check rather than just relying on the diff versions - this only seems to happen when WP gets really slow, weird. -- Tawker 17:27, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Blocking/unblocking the bot

No problem with you getting someone else to unblock the bot/your IP. I consider the block as a stop button on the bot when it's having trouble. When you're active and able to turn it off on your end, that works just as well. And I never even considered that the auto-blocker of it's IP would hit you as well. Ouch. I echo the nice comments that have been made about Tawkerbot2. It's already excellent: when it gets all the attributions right it will be one of the best anti-vandalism tools we have! By the way, I think a better edit summary for the bot to use would be this:

bot: reverting revision 12345678 by RogueUser (talk) to revision 12345689 by GoodUser

Queen of the North Sinking Image

Why are you calling it a blatant copyvio, this is an image taken by a passenger released to multiple media outlets and cannot be considered property of any one media outlet, I just screen captured it from the tv station I had open. I would have to disagree on the "competing" with them as they will only show the article on the day of the event and Wikipedia is not in any way competing, we are simply proving an encyclopedic account of the event -- Tawker 00:07, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia may not be intended as a news outlet, but our coverage of major current events is usually better than that of most news sources. As a result, we compete with news outlets for viewership. And yet the image only appeared after the TV station had 24 hours of non competition from Wikipedia and the image can hardly be considered copyright of the media station. It was also on multiple unaffiliated networks so property of the image does not rest with any one station. As the image will end up on Wikipedia one way or another, I see no reason to play a "delay longer" game. Consensus on the IRC channels tends to agree with me -- Tawker 04:13, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

No, in this case it appears that copyright rests with the unknown person who made the image, so we're competing with their ability to sell the image to news outlets, by reducing its value to those news outlets. Whoever made the image, they've already sold it to the news station(s), they're not going to make any more money from it. Copyright law sucks, but we can hardly get a free replacement, can we? Hello. I'm an admin of it:wikipedia. Recently there was a short discussion in our village pump and on our IRC chan regarding the Tawkerbot2, his advantages and possible problems. Many italian wikipedians showed interest but also concern and asked to know more about what the bot actually do and can do. Nope - no block bots for me! Just good old fashioned keyboarding and a sharp eye for trouble :-) I think Curps does use a blockbot, but its inner workings haven't been disclosed as far as I know. What was funny for me, was that even though I typed the entire block message, I was just moments after Curps!

Do you ever get messages not about Tawkerbot?

Hey, you've got a lovely bot there. I just noticed this edit [3] (sorry, it's the history that's interesting, not the one diff.) A bunch of edits by a user in a very close range, all of them vandalism, but tawkerbot only reverted one. I don't know if there's anything you can do about this, but would there be a way for it to notice if the IPs were in a close range and put up a "human check this please" flag? Didn't put this on the bot talk page in case that kills the bot, as it does with others. Cheers, Makemi 03:44, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi, it seems your bot gave User:Ccel a "test" warning for blanking a page. I would like to request you make a specific message, suited to just page blanking. The message doesn't even say blanking was done, or what article its in reference to. In this case, a user was trying to delete a page s/he made (s/he then AFD'd it). Now, I suspect this is common. So, I suggest telling people why page blanking is wrong, and what are other options there are, and where to go for help. While page blanking is often done malisciously, its often done with very legitimate motives, even if the means is misguided. --Rob 10:32, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

I highly recommened not using Tawkerbot2 unless your ready to hear more complaints from users. This kind of high speed vandal fighting is not going to be good if the bot can't correctly identify good faith edits from bad faith edits. IMHO, you should leave this up to RC patrollers than a bot. This was a false positive. I praise you for running a bot that fights vandals, but PetPets needs to merge to Petpet, already a longer and more well-established article. Therefore, this was not vandalism. This is in response to your reply on my talk page to feedback I left on the bot's talk page.

As for the message left on editors' talk pages, my personal preference leans towards something more technical and less conversational. That lead to my "thanks for experimenting, now frig off" interpretation, because that's how I imagined an innocent aggrieved editor taking the comment when the revert was wrong. FWIW, I'd lean more towards something along the lines of:

Your recent edit of some article was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to recognize and repair vandalism to Wikipedia articles. If you were experimenting, know that everyone really is welcome to contribute, but tests should be done in the sandbox. If the bot reverted a legitimate edit, please accept our apologies – if you bring it to the attention of the bot's owner, we may be able to improve its behavior.

Or something like that. At least that's my 2 cents' worth.

The bot is a great idea in theory. Thanks for all the work you've put into it. But please be careful and very conservative in practice. If you get too ambitious you'll get in trouble, because there is no way that the bot will be ever be able to reliably distinguish between all types of vandalism from good faith edits. Randomly reverting legitimate edits is another form of vandalism, after all! Going for the obvious profanity, scatology, etc., will help a lot, but keep a close eye on it, and leave the rest to us mere mortals. --Kbh3^rdtalk 05:29, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

A tawkerbot error

Hi Tawker. I just thought you should know about this revert. The IP address fixed it in the previous edit and your bot reverted it back. I figured that you should know so that hopefully you can prevent this from happening again. I left a message on User talk:80.7.14.231 (the user whose edit was reverted) explaining the misunderstanding. I overall like your bot and I've seen the good that it can do, however, I am a little concerned that mistakes like this will bite newbies and scare them away from future contributions. However, as long as the mistake is caught and is explained to the user, especially if they are a new user, I don't have a problem with it. I am just worried that this won't always be the case. Deleted Edits and Tawkerbot2

I've seen you comment a couple of times about not being able to see deleted edits. While this is possible, edits are really not deleted very often. About the only reasons I can think of for deleting an edit out of an existing page is when it contains personal info from outside WP.

What I would suspect is more likely happening when the bot has warned someone, but you cannot find the revert that was the subject of the revert, is that someone else made the revert before the bot could make it. In this case the bot would have tried to make a duplicate revert, and the duplicate revert would not show up in any edit lists.

In these cases when I need to find the edit that set the bot off, I look at the time stamp of the message, and then go look at the contributions of the "vandal", and look at approx a minute from before the warning. If there's a vandalistic edit there, especially if someone else reverted it almost at once, then yo have likely found the edit that set off the bot. - TexasAndroid 13:04, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

I deleted all the information on the Lincoln-Kennedy coincidences page, and left the redirect to the new articles title. All the information is exactly the same. If you want, I believe I added pics of B-Line buses at 99 B-Line and 98 B-Line. You can rip those off and put it on the TransLink page if you think it looks right. Vandalism on Wikipedia:Introduction

The Introduction is a very high profile page that many first time visitors see. Unfortunately, User:Sandbot is not working correctly on the this page and vandalism has been staying longer. The latest time was a vandal edit at 11:21, 6 April 2006 that did not get reverted until 12:32, 6 April 2006. Is there some way you can have User:Tawkerbot2 help out on this page - the vandalism is simple: users change the first line of the page - or delete it all together - thus breaking the transclusion of the introduction template. If the first line is

{{Please leave this line alone}}

then the page will work fine - the usual editors who monitor the page can remove regular vandalism (nonsense, rude comments, defemation, etc), but removal or change of this line results in the page not working and presents a bad image of wikipedia. Preferrably the first two lines should always be:

Google Web Accelerator

Andrew, I happen to have administrator access on this Windows computer, so I can indeed turn off the Google Web Accelerator. However, not everyone will be in the same situation -- for example, at work and at school I don't have administrator access and cannot disable it; it will always be ON.

The annoying thing is that I spent all night trying to figure out what was going on instead of editing articles like I wanted. Normally, I don't have this problem since I edit from my Linux laptop which doesn't have GWA. I only ran into the problem tonight because my wife is using the laptop and I came down to use my trusty old Windows desktop.

While I understand nobody is perfect, I also understand when somebody is not learning from their mistakes. From the above there is a pattern of agitated users. While their problems were solved, having so many of time in a row raises the question, were the edits made too quickly without the right manners? At which point it makes me wonder about WP:civil. While I can understand some feathers do get ruffled, when there are more then three users ruffled, from what appears to be bold but appeared rude action, I'm left to question is this user learning from his mistakes? Again, every single one of the edits you have provided have been responded in a civl and respectful manner to the satisfaction of the original postee. Some of those were not even complaints and "thanks for looking into this" really doesn't look like a complaint to me. I'd hardly see how they could be classified as mistakes on my part. Are you saying that error reports for an automated bot (for me to take a look at and fix) are fault of myself even when I take steps to correct them. In fact, the 3 posts you've posted as evidence are not even mistakes at all, but I guess I'll just have to accept that you don't want to take a deeper look at what is going on and I won't waste your time any more -- Tawker 05:04, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

(EC)Tawker asked me to comment. I would like to state that I in no way was upset with Tawker, nor did I ever feel that he acted uncivilly towards me. Since I posted that message, he has modified the warning message and I feel that it is now much more friendly in describing that it is an automated bot (even linking to a FAQ) and does make mistakes, but it still makes the point to vandals that if the revert was correct, vandalism will not be tolerated. I don't consider it a mistake of Tawker's when his bot doesn't function correctly 1 or 2% of the time. AFAIK, Tawker is doing his best to fix any errors in the code. If you'll look at the error, it was on an edit that was very unusual as far as the syntax so I wasn't surprised that a bot might mess this up. Well, nothing the response by PS2pcGAMER above coupled with the responses in the talk page, I have to say that Masssiveego is not taking things into perspective. If the bot was indeed making a "mess of mistakes" it would be blocked. As it obviously isn't (and there was a huge fuss on IRC when it was blocked over the message it leaves) something tells me the bot is doing pretty well. As a percentage of the edits it makes, it is something like 98% accurate, most humans make the odd mistake too. Well, I was just curious, it was down for 6 and 1/4 hours according to Rob Church, I'm pretty sure it wasn't closed until after that time had elapsed. I did actually ask if people wanted to extend it, and I was told it was the discretion of the 'crat. I really don't know what would have happened if it was extended but unbarring someone campaigning against chances are it would stay in the same range. Either way, the decision has been made. Ironically I think I'm on record as saying of those last few support votes (that came in after the servers came back) were not counted and they caused a failure, I would have been saying the same thing in another context. I really don't see any advantage in debating any further over it, I really did take steps to avoid controversy (asking Essjay not to close this one as of the IRC ties) so I guess that's what happens when you can't be god and control everything :o -- Tawker 05:27, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

FIPS Place code deletions are not vandalism

I have been told the sub pages for FIPS Place code constitute (1) pages that are too big; (2) non-encyclopedic content; (3) original material. None of which I agree with, but since people don't want my content here, I am marking it for removal. I'm sick and tired of trying to make this encyclopedia better when my contributions are unwanted. So I'm removing the contributions in order to solve the problem.

I am marking the pages for deletion due to the disagreement as I have decided to get rid of the objections by getting rid of the pages. This is not vandalism, these pages have been dereferenced and I am marking them for deletion since people don't want them around.

A public challenge: Can someone make a copyright problems bot?

As an admirer of your Tawkerbot for dealing with vandalism, I wanted to bring your attention to a comment I've made at Administrators Noticeboard. To sum up, there is always a massive backlog at Wikipedia:Copyright_problems. The reason I know that no other admins like working this page is because the work is incredibly tedious, resulting in a two-week backlog. Very few of the copyright problems on the page require any insight--they are blatant violations with the original url in the copyright violation template. Because of this, I'm challenging everyone who has made a Wikipedia bots to see if someone can create a bot that would examine pages with the {{subst:article-cv|Article Title Here}}, compare the copy on the page with the link to the supposed original page, and then either delete the article if there is a match or remove the copyright violation template if there isn't. Any articles that are not a close match could be left for a human admins to examine. However, if the bot could catch most of the 80-90% of copyright violations that are extremely blatent, we admins would be able to get a handle on this extremely important issue. As an incentive, I will publically award a "Grand Poo-Bah of Bot Designers" award to the first person who creates a workable copyright violation bot. Any thoughts on this? Dear Tawker,

This is a relatively minor issue and I'm somewhat embarrassed to ask the question, but is there a reason you often over-indent your replies to others' messages? I've noticed that sometimes your replies are even indented almost to the center of the page when replying to a post with just a single indent/bullet. I'm all for individuality and such where signatures, message styles etc are concerned, but this particular habit is hard to overlook because it makes it very confusing to follow a thread in extended discussions. TawkerbotC

I just didn't like the rather presumptive manner the thread was proceeding in, with one editor offering to sweep any objections under the carpet, and then a new account specifically for being a copyvio bot. It's really not a great idea to do this kind of thing by bot; particularly not to handle deletions that way. We'd only find a heap of people on DRV complaining that their 'hard' work had been eaten alive by some automated process that was unable to provide an explanation. Now, at least, we can seek an intelligent explanation of why an action was done. Anyway, there is a significant amount of opposition on ANI now, and I imagine that for now is enough to squelch the idea of doing this by bot. -Splash^talk 11:02, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

As I said there, my reference to combative editors was meant to refer to people who insult instead of discuss and that it did not refer to anyone in the discussion. My apologies for not being more precise and for any insult you saw in my statement. Also, I have no intention to be the "one editor offering to sweep any objections under the carpet." As I've already said in the discussion, since there is strong opposition to any bot deleting articles then we should not allow that to happen. However, if a bot could allow a human admin to more easily deal with the large backlog on the copyright problems page, while still leaving the ultimate decision to delete up to the human admin, then I think that would be useful to have. Hmm. You mean the ones that make pgkbot et al. go "ping"? Simply being a large page does not make it at all worthy of a bot-placed "are you breaking the law?" tag. If the bot could also point to a page that it might be copying then, yeah, maybe. But as pointed out on AN, the non-intrusive way to do this would be to tag the talk page, rather than the article, and anyway have a human come along and verify the violation before listing it on WP:CP for deletion. It doesn't seem like much would be achieved by that, apart from the creation of a backlog of un-humaned, bot-tagged articles to go with the backlog of undeleted violations. Now you must be thinking I hate bots by now. I don't. I just think that they need to have a good rationale to be brought into service and should otherwise be left unplugged. -Splash^talk 15:03, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

I hate to say this, but I'm not sure having a bot search new pages for suspected copyright violations would help much. This part of the process work pretty well using human editors, who catch a good number (if not most) of the blatent violations. If a bot started doing this then we'd still have the problem of a large backlog of copyright problems which admins would have to deal with (and the backlog would be even greater since the bot would be adding to the backlog). The problem with the copyright backlog comes after human editors have tagged a page as a suspected copyright violation. Not that I'm opposed to a bot helping to find more violations, I'm just not sure it would help the backlog any and might even make the backlog worse. Best,--Alabamaboy 15:48, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

BTW, for what it's worth my experience with copyright violations has shown a strong, and obvious, correlation between new users and copyright violations (because of this I try to leave messages on their talk pages welcoming them and also letting them know that the article had to be deleted b/c of copyright concerns and inviting them to rewrite the article in their own words). While I occasionally catch a new large article being a copyright violation, most of the time the violations occur in articles in the 800 to 2000 byte range. There is also a strong correlation between linkspam and copyright violations, with companies using copy from their own websites to try and make a linkspam article seem like a legit article. The ign...no, mustn't bite them, they are shiny new, in the IRC antivandal channel were not able to put a note in the title of the channel asking the admins who frequent it to release the CAT:SEMI entries. Many of the protections originate in there, and they aren't getting released. I was given a bunch of patronising "oh darling, have you heard of AWB and templates?" responses. BTW, I would be interested in being involved in the Open proxy project. I have been fully active for two months now. This is getting ridiculous

We need to have RandiRice blocked. The Flattbush article keeps getting vandalized. It's been well over 20 times that they have blanked out the entire thing, not to mention the vandalising that they do. It's time to ban them from wikipedia. P.S. wikibooks vandalism bot

The bot appears to be massivley out of synch on its rc feed compared to computer4 (ive confirmed computer4 to be in synch maunally), i suspect it may need its static config tweaking as i suspect its reciving a wrong feed (are both static configs set right/exactly the same this often causes the problems after the rc feed crash) from somewhere, ive quieted it for now until you can have a look at it and set computer4 to speak Benon 07:47, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

School IP

Regarding this edit, I believe that the IP should not be unblocked but should instead be indefinitely banned. It is the IP for a school, and kids at that school can still read Wikipedia just fine for research if they must, and if they want to edit, nothing is preventing them from creating a username and editing with that. If you unblock the IP or let the block expire, some students will make constructive edits; however, vandalism from others will strongly outweigh the positive contribs, and the IP will inevitably be blocked again. I also strongly discourage contacting school or school system IT. Another use already tried to and received no response. In fact, I know why he received no response. I have had first-hand experience with both the school and county IT and they are all (no offense meant to anyone) complete and utter morons. If you want, I can even send you letters written by them that prove how inept they are at everything technological, but I'd prefer not to because they are, shall I say, a bit sensitive. Well, 550 hasn't been fixed yet so they would be restricted to editing at home. I do agree that schools have a LOT of vandalism, I guess I was just trying to AGF and allow a good faith user upon request. Oh, I didn't know you can't edit with a username from a blocked IP because, well, I never did anything to get my IP blocked :) What's the 550 error? I assume that's what doesn't allow you to edit from a blocked IP even with a username. That should stop a lot of vandals who vandalize with an IP and then try to with a username but can't because their IP is blocked. Motherload Goldium Edition

Just spent some time cleaning up Motherload Goldium Edition, which you'd marked with a "prod", mostly so as not to bite a new user. Now it's a decent article for a game. Then I looked at the game website, and discovered that the game is a Flash clone of Namco's Dig Dug, circa 1982. It even looks 1982. It really wasn't worth an article. Cleanup was a waste of my time. Vandal fighting doesn't interest me much. But yeah, if it's going to take 6000 edits and 100% edit summary use, then that's what it takes.

It's just really strange changing your habits...I've ended up using weird summaries on talk pages, like "weird comment that I can't summarise" or "rant" or whatver. And I still haven't decided what to use as a summary when I create a redirect. Sometimes I use "rd" or "make rd", which doesn't seem to add a lot of information. But the worst is when I'm editing my monobook.js - what the hell could I possibly want to say other than "trying to fix bug"? :) Stevage 08:19, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Cryptic and Uncle G have done similar tasks in the past, but neither is around these days, and your name has been suggested as one that might be able to help. Yeah, Crypticbot was my first thought too, but Cryptic hasn't edited in a month, if he returns, I will certainly ask him. Tawkerbot 2 is really great, and I don't want to take you away improving it, but if you could squeeze this in sometime soon, I'm sure all of those anonymous editors would really appreciate it ;) I don't know how it became my responsibility, but I've been doing the archiving myself since the end of February, but won't be nearly as reliable in the future. The problem is that the page grows very quickly and becomes unwieldy after not long if it's not archived. About some of the questions

Hi, Tawker. Since you mentioned it during one of the discussions, I thought it would be more adequate to talk about this first here, in the "privacy" of your talk page (if you'd prefer to move it to the main forum, that's ok too). It's concerning the set of questions you've added to Ezeu's RfA. Not all of them, just a few:

• Question n.3: I fail to see a practical point in that question. It's highly speculative, and it would only serve a purpose if the candidate were to say something clearly inappropriate. But in terms of testing a "regular" user's aptitude for Adminship, it would seem to be of little service.

Well, I do admit, its a little bit of a "think tank" though I think it could be ommited ok

• Question n.8: Seems to be redundant with the standard Q1.

Well, Std Q1 asks what chores, this one somewhat is a "what motivated you to run" - I think I'll modify it to that extent

• Question n.9: It seems to me that it introduces a level of complexity to Adminship that really shouldn't exist (and I don't believe it does). It would seem that, even if Adminship is a big deal, it's not that big a deal. Yet.

In a sense, I grabbed that one from Rob Church, in short, I'm really looking for people to say that its not a powertrip and that its not a big deal, as admins by themselves have no more of a vote, no more of a say than any other user, and I like to see how the user percieves the role.

• Q3: ok
• Q8: ok, but then it would be maybe best reserved for self-noms. Otherwise, even though the candidate still has to accept the nomination, it's more about accepting gracefully a huge (and flattering) token of confidence ("if people think I'm good enough, then why not" / "what motivated me was that other people thought that I was suited for the job/I got nominated"). Practically speaking, only self-nominated candidates put this kind of specific thought into their applying for Adminship.
• Q9: Well, if we want the candidate to answer either way, then the point would remain: it would cause an analysis of a complexity that shouldn't (doesn't?) exits. And if we want the candidate to answer that it doesn't really matter, since Adminship is not a big deal, then it would kind of make it a trick question, which I don't believe we should be asking. That's just my two cents.

User:CasanovaAlive was a manual block, it's a sockpuppet of the "Vaughan" user, one of many socks that blanked the Talk:Simon Strelchik page. Take a look at the history of that page and the discussion currently at WP:AN/I and WP:RFCU. Vandals

Hey, I've noticed that User:Yofoxyman has been vandalizing a whole lot of pages. I'm relatively new to wikipedia (been here for a month or two) and I'm not totally sure how to deal with it. I also figure that 70.24.156.28 and 72.136.39.180 are either yofoxyman or friends, because they have vandalized similar pages. They have been warned, but have continued to vandalize. It has not been vandalism but merely exposing the truth and Chinamanjoe has had no right to delete the truthful information which I have provided from all the user talk pages. Chinamanjoe is a fraud and all the the pages he has created are complete lies. He has deleted the additions which I and others have made to the discussion pages to try and hide the truth. Re: GoCard

I can't get any more recent than that, because that is from my graduating grade 12 year. However, from what I've heard and seen, that format is still in use today (it varies by school, but the basic format is still the same). As for the Wikipedia idea, if you start one I will join. :) Although I am thinking of starting a Wiki on Wikia that covers the film industry in Greater Vancouver instead.

Mathwiz2020's Sockpuppet

Yes, that was me - I didn't know though that I couldn't edit the monobook file myself. Actually, I had e-mailed User:Bluemoose and he blanked the faulty file just a minute after you blanked my monobook, so I was able to sort things out myself. My IP address was blocked for the sockpuppet, so I couldn't even edit from my username (as per the error you told me about a week ago). Regarding 69.225.158.113 (talk · contribs). One person, using many IP addresses, has been vandalizing the article on University of California, Los Angeles (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) regularly for months now. He originally started by removing half the images. Now he reverts back to that old version, which is quite obsolete by this time. Since he rarely uses the same IP, it isn't possible to block him, forcing usa to semi-protect the article for long stretches. In this instance he did stick with an IP for a while so I blocked it to get his attention. The unblock request was entirely unconnected. That was placed by a user, Legendary Steve (talk · contribs), who was looking to pick a fight and objected to the block simply because I made it. For that reason I removed the tag. Tawkerbot seems to have a date bug

In some cases it seems to update the prod template with the date it runs rather than the date the template was added. In another case it seemed to use the day before the temlate was added. Dlyons493 Talk 20:06, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Mirador Instant Messenger

Hey Tawker, you just deleted the article Mirador Instant Messenger citing CSD/G1. I originally tagged this article for speedy deletion; however, after the user contacted me, I've looked a little more into it, and I believe it may be notable enough (31.900 hits on Google). This is a n00b's first article, and I think he's just having some trouble with formatting, language, etc., thus why it appears to be patent nonsense. In any case, I'm going to try to salvage the article and then perhaps prod or AfD (as it smells a bit like an advertisement to me); I hope you don't mind my recreating it. Reply to Tawker regarding Ayn Rand cult

To note in the article that followers of her creed were primarily white, young men is hardly racism. Her Nietzschean-like obsession with "American values of egoism and individualism", and her opposition to women's rights, is well documented. As for the noted adherents, did you read their entries in Wikipedia? Also, I provided a fairly extensive list of references; including two external links with analysis by Murray Rothbard and Michael Shermer. The "George W. Bush" article is a "POV war magnet", yet it remains undeleted so I ask you to please undelete "Ayn Rand cult", irregardless of your personal opinion regarding this very well-documented phenomena. -Dna4salE 15:41, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

P.S. One of the closest to Rand was Nathaniel Branden, a young philosophy student who joined the Collective in the early days before Atlas Shrugged was published. In his autobiographical memoirs entitled Judgment Day (1989), Branden recalled: "There were implicit premises in our world to which everyone in our circle subscribed, and which we transmitted to our students at NBI." Incredibly, and here is where the philosophical movement became a cult, they came to believe that (pp. 255-256):

• Ayn Rand is the greatest human being who has ever lived.
• Atlas Shrugged is the greatest human achievement in the history of the world.
• Ayn Rand, by virtue of her philosophical genius, is the supreme arbiter in any issue pertaining to what is rational, moral, or appropriate to man's life on earth.

• No one can be a good Objectivist who does not admire what Ayn Rand admires and condemn what Ayn Rand condemns.
• No one can be a fully consistent individualist who disagrees with Ayn Rand on any fundamental issue.
• Since Ayn Rand has designated Nathaniel Branden as her "intellectual heir," and has repeatedly proclaimed him to be an ideal exponent of her philosophy, he is to be accorded only marginally less reverence than Ayn Rand herself.
• But it is best not to say most of these things explicitly (excepting, perhaps, the first two items). One must always maintain that one arrives at one's beliefs solely by reason.
