Sorry for the slow response I've been a bit busy. I checkout out the UEL article but couldn't see the duplication you mentioned. For future reference, once a PROD is removed, whoever it is by, then it can't be retagged for PROD. Thanks for the clarification. I thought that if a PROD was removed without addressing the concerns, as happened in this instance, then it should be reinstated. Obviously, I got it wrong. I did do quite a big merge of colleges associated with Patna University last week without consultation, although I sought comments from User:C.Fred before actually instating redirects - surprisingly, there has so far been no issue with this even though previously C.Fred had had quite a tussle with someone regarding one of them. I would agree in this case that warring is likely, though: I cannot help but think there might be some COI involved. - Sitush (talk) 12:16, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Most of the duplication is in and around the University_of_East_London#London_2012_Olympic_and_Paralympic_Games section, including stuff about the £21m development etc. The only non-duplicated information is the UELSports section detailing the degree courses on offer, which was originally straight out of the UEL prospectus until I edited it. - Sitush (talk) 12:19, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

No probs, I'm sure I've done it before and personally I think you should be able to revert them if they're removed without explanation. There's nothing wrong with being bold and redirecting as you did with Padna, that looks sensible, it's just that in a situation like this it is unlikely to hold. I see what you mean about the duplication more now, but WP:CSD#A10 only applies if it is an exact copy and doesn't add more, so wouldn't apply. Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Just wanted to comment on the rationale that you provided for removing the A7 CSD tag on the above mentioned article. It is apparent that you declined the deletion due to a claim of notability based on awards received. The subject actually has never received an award. Clever editing makes it appear that she has, but further review reveals the error in the claim. Since this is the fourth creation after previous speedy deletions, I went ahead and sent it for discussion. After deletion, it should probably be salted. Thanks for the note. I agree it should be deleted, but I don't think in its current state it qualifies for A7 as it does claim that they are of some significance, even as you point out it is incorrect. AFD is the place to discuss it and of course, if (once) it is deleted and recreated G4 applies. Sorry if you think I made the wrong decision, I just feel it is better to double check that the community agrees before deleting something, rather than using speedy deletion as a super-vote for admins. New Pages and New Users

I've recently been doing some thinking (and a great deal of consultation with Philippe and James at the WMF's community department) on how to keep new users around and participating, particularly in light of Sue's March update. One of the things we'd like to test is whether the reception they get when they make their first article is key. In a lot of cases, people don't stay around; their article is deleted and that's that. By the time any contact is made, in other words, it's often too late.

What we're thinking of doing is running a project to gather data on if this occurs, how often it occurs, and so on, and in the mean time try to save as many pages (and new contributors) as possible. Basically, involved users would go through the deletion logs and through Special:NewPages looking for new articles which are at risk of being deleted, but could have something made of them - in other words, non-notable pages that are potentially notable, or spammy pages that could be rewritten in more neutral language. This would be entirely based on the judgment of the user reviewing pages - no finnicky CSD standards. These pages would be incubated instead of deleted, and the creator contacted and shepherded through how to turn the article into something useful. If they respond and it goes well, we have a decent article and maybe a new long-term editor. If they don't respond, the draft can be deleted after a certain period of time.

I know this isn't necessarily your standard fare, but with your involvement in WP:NEWT I thought it might be up your alley. Regulation of genetic engineering

Hi Smartse. Its been awhile, hope you are well. As you have showed interest in the past I thought you might like to look over a new page I just created. I originally was rewriting the relevant section under Genetically modified plant, but it grew into a bit of a monster. It is in no way finished (only really talks about crops, not much on medicine and other important areas), the politics behind it could be expanded (not really my forte) and the USA section relies too much on one source (laziness on my behalf). To be honest I started to get a bit bored and thought it would be better to throw it out here so other editors could work on it than let it fester away in my sandbox. I am hoping it is complete enough to survive as a main for the relevant GE articles. The Genetically modified organism#Governmental support and opposition (which was used as a base for this) could do with some tidying up. Might be appropriate for DYK, although I stole so much from other articles that it will take a bit of effort to confirm or deny 5X expansion. AIRcorn (talk) 03:52, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi Aircorn, I'm good thanks, hope you are as well. I'm stuck with a steam-powered internet connection for the next few months as I'm in Rwanda, so can't really do any substantial editing, but the article looks good. I wonder whether if it should be split into a separate article specifically about the regulation of GM plants though. As we know, most GM is done in labs for scienctific purposes and I know that in the UK at least there are strict rules about ensuring they don't escape and there are severe consequences if they do. I'm not sure where you'd find the info about it, but it must be somewhere and I assume the situation is similar in other countries. I'm not surprised you got a bit bored either, it's a bit of a beast, but you're right it is best to move it to mainspace, I have plenty of stuff fermenting in my sandbox, but it will have to wait! You're right. Again. There are basically three areas that I can think of with regulation: Permission to do the experiments/develop the organism, regulations governing the lab work, and then regulations that have to be followed for release. I got sidetracked with this article on the release, although to be fair that was the first thing that comes up in google scholar when you type "GM" and "regulations". I think the article titled "regulation of genetic engineering" should focus on these three headings and the current one should be moved to "regulation of the release of genetically modified organisms (or crops)" (wordy I know, maybe there is a better title) and made a main of that article. Hi. We'd briefly discussed the Magnolia_(CMS) page back in Dec 2010 when I'd asked for comments on the revised text. Following your suggestion to contact Wikiproject Computing, I left a note some weeks ago (Feb 2011) the Wikipedia Computing project talk page asking editors to review the proposed draft and provide feedback. As of today there has been no response. Should I go ahead and publish the draft article as is? Or is there another way you can suggest for me to have the article reviewed by the Computing project? Hi Bkraft, the points I made back in November don't appear to have been addressed yet. The most important thing is that the article is based on what independent publications have written about Magnolia. Use the sources mentioned on the talk page by yourself to rewrite the article in User:Bkraft/Sandbox and bear in mind that the article should not necessarily contain a history of releases or every single feature, unless independent sources have discussed them. I can't really help you more than that at the moment, but if you need more help you can post at the conflict of interest noticeboard and someone might be able to help you out. Good luck! Looking for a mentor

Hi Smartse,

For years, I use Wikipedia as an avid reader. I analyzed a lot for my research, particularly in the fields of botany, painting and communication. Having been director of communications of a large international group and now a consultant in communications strategies, Wikipedia was very helpful for my work. Fascinated by the free encyclopedia ‘s world and convinced that the media is the future of knowledge transmission and communication, I would like to be sponsored to improve the quality of my contributions. I have already studied the tutorials and for now, I have made several minor edits. Found of Nature, I am deeply engaged in activities to safeguard biodiversity, particularly in the Amazon (as a painter, I outlined a series of paintings on medicinal plants of Amazonia, in various Art galleries). Fluent in Spanish and English, I think I can make some contributions in the fields above-mentioned.

If you are interested in botany though, there is a lot of work to be done, particularly about Amazonian plants, so I wish you good luck! Moved Task Force (band) to Taskforce (band)

Hi Smartse, in Nov 2010 you moved this this article, renaming it from Task Force to Taskforce citing this PR doc. I think we need to revert this - I have physical Task Force releases which use the band name all over the inlay material and I can assure you, it's two words. I think the PR doc you found publicising a show has misspelled the name. See also:

Gahh, wrote a long reply, but then closed the tab... The short answer is that both seem to be used, but as I found before Taskforce seems to be slightly more common. Even Amazon are confused about it though using both if you search for "taskforce hip hop". I'm not sure what to use now, the links you gave aren't "reliable" as they often copy of Wikipedia, but more reliable sources still use both (sorry I can't get the links again, but search for "task force" hip hop and taskforce hip hop and you'll see what I mean. You won't be able to move it yourself, but if you really think that Task Force is right then I'll do it for you. (Have you heard rainy day science on sticksman by skitz - it's good!) If you got permission also for those photos just upload them to Commons when you have some free time and place them in the correct categories (you can drop me a note and I will do the categorization if you like). There is always the need for good images. For example: Commons did not have a single image of Paracerceis sculpta until now.

Thanks so much for participating in the survey. I realize it's an odd question to ask about Wikipedia articles, so I appreciate your efforts. I actually chose that article because it had a low vandalism rate, since I'm filtering vandalism out anyway. Vandalism is definitely closer to being a solved problem, whereas identifying conflict, vocabulary conventions, and other more subtle trends in edits remains. Counter-intuitively, even single words can be good enough to identify reverts beyond just 'rvv', including things like editor conflict (something a newcomer would want to avoid) and troublesome terminology that's been discussed on the talk pages. Your feedback will help me refine this model, which if successful will be turned into an interface to help with Wikipedia editing and encourage newcomers. Thanks again. WP:WIADYK #2 "Articles must have a minimum of 1,500 characters of prose (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables etc.)". I agree it is a bit stupid sometimes - maybe if there is sufficient prose inside the table then we can make an exception, but we'd have to see. (And yes I noticed the "other events", Viriditas @ 09:46 summed it up well.) Drop me a note if you think there might be enough text in the table to count. Denise Hardesty was the source. They were marked as having an email received but permissions not confirmed, since November 8 2010 and were deleted in April, six months later. I do not notify because I cannot keep track of who has been notified and who has not. And then some people don't enable email notification and complain that I should do an SUL check and leave them a message at their most active wiki. I'm often the only one working the English-language permissions queue and clearing out unapproved OTRS pending/received items, leaving me little time to handle other backlogs on Commons. I give 30 days from receipt of the initial email or the first application of OTRS pending, whichever is the latest, to resolve an image's status. We had a bot that would notify people automatically but it is no longer operational. Would be nice to have the resources Wikipedia has, both in terms of people and automated processes. Images can always be restored if permission is confirmed. The form at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Email_templates can be used, as the original statement from Denise Hardesty stated that approval was only for Wikipedia and also did not define license terms. – Adrignola talk 20:39, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

Online Ambassadors: Time to join pods

Hello! If you're planning to be an active Online Ambassador for the upcoming academic term, now is the time to join one or more pods. (A pod consists of the instructor, the Campus Ambassadors, and the Online Ambassadors for single class.) The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) explains the expectations for being part of a pod as an Online Ambassador. (The MOU for pods in Canada is essentially the same.) In short, the role of Online Ambassadors this term consists of:

• Working closely with the instructor and Campus Ambassadors, providing advice and perspective as an experienced Wikipedian
• Helping students who ask for it (or helping them to find the help they need)
• Watching out for the class as a whole
• Helping students to get community feedback on their work

This replaces the 1-on-1 mentoring role for Online Ambassadors that we had in previous terms; rather than being responsible for individual students (some of whom don't want or help or are unresponsive), Online Ambassadors will be there to help whichever students in their class(es) ask for help.

You can browse the upcoming courses here: United States; Canada. More are being added as new pods become active and create their course pages.

Once you've found a class that you want to work with—especially if you some interest or expertise in the topic area—you should sign the MOU listing for that class and get in touch with the instructor. We're hoping to have at least two Online Ambassadors per pod, and more for the larger classes.

If you're up for supporting any kind of class and would like me to assign you to a pod in need of more Online Ambassadors, just let me know.

Thanks for the edits on this. I have a strong feeling that there's a deal of WP:AUTO activity going on here, and in related Sherlockiana articles. If you check out a linksearch - [1] - you find rather of lot of IP-inserted citations to PS's personal website; and there are also some fairly irrelevant insertions into articles such as Peter Spiring. New to talk pages

I signed on to Wikipedia several years ago but had not edited until recently. I'm not sure who Smartse is, but I'm replying to hiser (his or her) welcome to Wikipedia. This note is just to introduce myself. You can find plenty more about me by searching for "sedgehead" on the internet (Philip E. Hyatt). I had an early interest in birds that eventually led to 17 years with the US Forest Service as a botanist and ecologist at the end of my formal career. I'm partly retired now, but working full time as a writer and editor, freelancing from home. I started to teach myself Chinese in 2004, which has led me to work remotely in China. That is, I live in Arkansas but all my work comes from Chinese scientists and businesses. I translate Chinglish to English, mostly. This has led me back to wikipedia in the last few months, where I have found an abundance of lacking names like the Maowusu Sandylands, the Xinjiang Oasis, and Xinshui Basin in Shanxi Province. That is, I can try to find some fairly major geographic areas on wikipedia and fail to come up with wikipage! Last week it was a huge basin in northern China which had not page. I forget the name. I can't build wikipedia by myself, but I'm gradually encouraging my thousands of Chinese friends to start editing wikipedia. Their English may not be great, but then I've never been to China! Xin River and editing

Thanks for your reply. I have a few quick thoughts. First, I'm looking at playing with starting a new page on the Xin River in China... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Sedgehead/Xin_River.

I've mostly played with minor edits on wikipedia, but I'm developing some areas of expertise and may get more aggressive with wikipedia work in the future. As for Carex, I still have an interest, but it is not as active. I'm more interested in learning and mastering Chinese at the moment. I'm teaching myself.

My last two US Forest Service supervisors had one criticism of me. "You write emails that are too long." My solution? Retire from the agency and become a full time writer. I have a busy day ahead so I won't do much on wikipedia today. Just playing. But serious work.

As for China, I have two questions, one of which I'll probably find on W myself. That one is, "What makes a good reference?" Obviously, I know the answer and can find more details on W's website. I can't read http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%98%95%E6%B0%B4%E6%B2%B3 but I'm assuming citing W for an English article is a valid source. 我不会中文很好， 可是我常常学。 My second question is one I would like an answer to. I see several research articles every week from China. This is my job. I edit them to improve the English. I know I can't publish the research on Wikipedia! For example, I can't tell you the details of the effect of climate change on a Chinese province. But I can take a location like the Xin River or the Xin River Basin and edit or create an Wikipedia page for it. My question? Can I cite unpublished information? I just answered my own question! No.

Interesting news! I managed to visit the Chinese version of wikipedia to find references on the Xin River. I don't understand the second and third references, which google translates as "letters," but I will check that further. The good news? The first reference is a research article on the river. I contacted my Chinese friends who sent me the Chinese version of the article. I was able to translate it on Google and with the help of other Chinese friends, enough to get the title into a .ref. code. I updated a bit of info and included the reference. Tomorrow (probably) I will read the rest of the article (in Chinese) and be able to add a fair amount of details on the river's quality, pollution, protection measures, hydrology, and physical characteristics in the drainage! Update on courses and ambassador needs

Hello, Ambassadors!

I wanted to give you one last update on where we are this term, before my role as Online Facilitator wraps up at the end of this week. Already, there are over 800 students in U.S. classes who have signed up on course pages this term. About 40 classes are active, and we're expecting that many more again once all the classes are up and running.

On a personal note, it's been a huge honor to work with so many great Wikipedians over the last 15 months. Thanks so much to everyone who jumped in and decided to give the ambassador concept a try, and double thanks those of you who were involved early on. Smartse - thanks for looking over the article. I've worked on the page some more; unfortunately there are not tons of news articles that have featured us directly -- the firm is mentioned in the news usually when we have advised on a transaction or in relation to Mr. Solomon himself. You had mentioned the possiblity of using sources found from Google books -- were you impyling that a readable version may be online somewhere or that I'd have to find a physical copy of the book itself and scan it? Please let me know if the current level of sourcing is sufficient. Thanks again.

Copyright Infringement

Hi, I think Im a little confused...I did not copy the "entire content from the page", for potaoes... that article is a whole page, and deals with different regions.. my edits were a few lines and were paraphrased, and then sourced. Okay, so I think as far as I understand from copyright laws, things need to be sourced or need to be quoted if its a direct copy and paste .. then sourced. If the article is sourced and its put in your own words but is still sourced, it should not be a copyright infringement right? For the Ann Van Zyl article , it came from three sources, one of them was a biographical page in chronological order - so it may look like a simple cut and paste with minor changes... It was sourced as well, but it wasnt from copy and paste , if I just 'copied and pasted' the whole article... I would have just put quotes around it and called it a day....but when it come to chronology its hard to rewrite the order of historical events, again it was all sourced... -- When you are referring to earlier notices about infringement I think you are referring to the ONE from August 2010 - there is only one of them on this page, and this is b/c i took a section from wiki and included it on to another wiki page to combine an article and didnt know we had to source content from another wiki page about the same topic. Please can you be specific with the examples so I understand and also with the the ones you want me to check.. The Ann van Zyl one was deleted so I cant go back to compare that to the original. If you do not have time to go in depth, then maybe the investigation would be quicker, otherwise, I will need more details then you copied an pasted the entire article which I know i didnt, ..also I think in future it would be helpful if we couls still have access to the article so that changes can be made before republishing.....that article took some time to write, (b/c it wasnt just copy and paste), so please advise thanks... --MsTingaK (talk) 02:22, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi -- re this, I assume that what matters is not whether the original story is or is not on the web, but whether it has been retracted. Since there is no evidence of retraction (and in any event no requirement that a source be available on-line), what matters is the fact of publication. Does this sound right? Thanks - pens and rulers always scared me, I did try making one using thread but it didn't work, so now I'm moving on to trying to code them in C++... No problem for the edits and sorry for my italic fail. I'll keep an eye on it and in the meantime, try searching for Spathularia in google books and google scholar. If you can't access any papers in google scholar, drop me an email and I can probably send you a .pdf. Sasata is right though that writing articles about genera is difficult - you might want to concentrate on each species' article first. Good luck and let me know if you need help with anything. First of all understand I do not work for Demag. My race, religion, gender and where a person learned about a subject like a University should not be questioned. The conflict of interest statement has been used to justify going after all edits I have done in one shot. Thanks for your interest. I do understand why you edited my entry out of this socially highly significant article. Perhaps you could help me solve the dilemma I see surrounding synthetic cannabis which is to do with the target readers for this article. As far as I'm concerned, as a scholarly but relevant and objectively insightful article it would rate 5 stars on every category, and is highly informative to the reader. I do see it receives an extremely high amount of traffic and is subject to vandalism. The vandalism would be performed by the people who need (for their own welfare) to actually read (rather than skim) the article the most. This would also include those who are attempting to help users of synthetic cannabis stop doing so. As I searched Wikipedia , a simple and easy to understand summary of the basic facts which might affect a persons knowledge of synthetic cannabis seems to be missing. A "who, what, when, where why" approach. I put the photo at the end in References because I saw there was no other relevant place to put it. Perhaps you could make some suggestions? I used the photo as a vehicle in other words for readers who would find the article scholarly and thus not read it. I did search Wikipedia and did not find a ready source of basic easy to understand information about synthetic cannabis. In other words, yes, I agree, the way I referenced Trainwreck as a product does not warrant a separate article on synthetic cannabis, but it has high traffic, and any other title I put on the article I wrote will be lost in the shuffle. I hope that you might edit the article I wrote to Wikipedia guidelines and find a way to reference it to the main article as I think it is important, more easily accessible information. I think being open to new ways of doing things is vital for Wikipedia to really achieve what it sets out to do.

Hi Justthinking25. Thanks for taking the time to write a note explaining your thoughts. I understand what you are getting at, but it isn't our mission to specifically provide health information for drug users. Obviously in a complete and encyclopedic article we will cover these issues (like in the safety section) and ideally it will be easy for people to understand. If you think that there are sections in the SC article that you think are unclear or difficult to understand I'd encourage you to work to improve them, rather than starting a separate article where the facts are dumbed down. I haven't searched for SC sources for about a year but it is likely that more exist since then which could be incorporated. Other sources are present in the article and could be used to expand it further, for example this. If you want to find more, I'd advise using google scholar and high-quality media organisations such as the New York Times and the BBC, as often the smaller news organisations seem to have no clue what they are writing about (I'm saying that mainly due to the hundreds of articles written about people who were supposedly snorting bath salts, rather than "bath salts" which are drugs). If you find any sources in google scholar that you cannot access I will try to find them for you and email you a copy. I will try to do some work on the article again at some point, but it depends if I have time! Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks about the graphic! Taizhou and comments on edits.

I just did some cleanup of the English on the Taizhou page (a city in China). I noticed "View History" allows the tracking of who has edited a page, and some tracking notes have comments. Yep, see WP:ES for details. For edits like that, we often call them copy edits which you can abbreviate to c/e if you are feeling lazy. Edit summaries are more important when changing content on more active pages, but it's a good habit to get into. SmartSE (talk) 17:39, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
