RE: Andrew Bridgen edits edit

The BBC reference has no citations, they want to be the ones to bring the truth to everyone without even a link to the original article or original tweet! Substake article is the author's own article that Andrew tweeted about. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:1467:2500:18E5:7547:388E:F721 (talk) 12:31, 11 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi, please could you clarify your reason for removing my edit regarding Mr Bridgen latest tweets about Covid conspiracies? You state "Need better sources than just his tweets to demonstrate" - just wondering, to demonstrate what? Randomfellow (talk) 09:16, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Randomfellow: You seem to have missed the final word of my edit summary which was to WP:WEIGHT. In essence, why are those particular tweets deemed worthy of including in the article? As a rule of thumb, unless reliable sources have discussed a tweet, it isn't suitable to include it in a biography. SmartSE (talk) 15:33, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Matthew Rabinowitz edit

Hi SmartSE, thanks for the feedback on the page I created. Please forgive this rookie if I'm not engaging correctly, however, if possible, I'd like assistance in addressing the issues you flagged on the page: Too resume like and that T&Cs were violated by taking payment. In terms of the latter, how do I "prove" that this isn't the case? The subject is a well-known South African medical engineer with a demonstrated history in his field. I appreciate your time and would like to do the right thing. Thanks again. Russjarv (talk) 14:17, 25 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Scientific Reports edit

This is one of those situations where Wikipedia sucks. Is it worth filing an SPI for this do you think ? Bon courage (talk) 17:10, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I just opened an SPI. They are easy to do. - UtherSRG (talk) 17:19, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Bon courage and UtherSRG: No need in this situation in my opinion - it's a clear WP:DUCK and so I'll block both. SmartSE (talk) 17:24, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I file in case CU comes back with a sleeper. Community has a draft article that they started. If they are a sock of an already blocked user, I can delete the draft as G5. - UtherSRG (talk) 17:26, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@UtherSRG: Yep I saw that and have commented there and closed it - no need for a CU atm in my opinion. If they come back, maybe then. SmartSE (talk) 17:30, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Draft for Daniel Vorcaro edit

Thanks for reviewing my article. However, I am not sure you left it in the correct form, so I can submit it for review as a draft. I am not sure if I am putting it correctly but as it is, I think it is neither an article nor a draft. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kelmaa (talkcontribs) 17:54, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Kelmaa: Sorry about that - I've replaced the AFC template. Are there any references which actually discuss him? From what I looked at, they all seemed to be about a bank rather than a person. SmartSE (talk) 21:32, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Smartse yes. Thank you. It's better now. On whether there are references that discuss him, yes. Please see references 1, 2, 6, 7, 8(newspaper featured), 9, 11, 12 and 16. Also, for almost all the other references, he has been highlighted in a paragraph or two. Reference 14 is a Portuguese newspaper in which he is interviewed briefly regarding the bank. Also, some references may need subscription to open. Kelmaa (talk) 21:50, 7 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Smartse I have also checked on Google news using the editors tool ("Daniel Vorcaro" -wikipedia) and there are a good number of articles about him Kelmaa (talk) 14:06, 8 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Citation bot? edit

Hi, thanks for this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Conjugated_oligoelectrolytes&diff=1140757917&oldid=1140545935

Is this a tool assisted edit? I often improperly cite things assuming bots will come along and fix them, but it looks like you did this manually. What's your process? Cheers Miserlou (talk) 23:54, 24 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Miserlou: No problem. There might be a bot which does it, but that was with WP:REFTOOLBAR which you can switch on at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. From the "template" dropdown, choose "cite journal" and then there is a box which you can paste the doi into and then if you click on the magnifying glass it fetches all the data and formats it for you. I find it baffling that this doesn't come as standard! SmartSE (talk) 01:37, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Wow, had no idea. Thanks! Miserlou (talk) 19:34, 25 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sanity check / second opinion edit

Hi! These two articles I've tagged for problems smell of UPE. What do you think?

Bon courage (talk) 05:24, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Bon courage: Yes, I see what you mean. I think it's COI though rather than UPE. I'll drop you an email to explain. SmartSE (talk) 10:53, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I've cleaned up Rochkind. Its seems to be marketing speak, summary style you get in a profile. scope_creepTalk 14:26, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Slavin is much the same. I think its been written by a doctor. I removed a wee block from Rochkind but Slavin is fine. They are both quite information dense and could do with copyedit, which I've tagged. I don't think they are UPE. Possibly coi. scope_creepTalk 14:44, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Useme paid edition edit

I've managed to add the paid contribution disclosure to the Useme arcicle. Thanks for letting me know. W. Ron Allen edit

Hi. I read your message on the user's talk page. Which source is it you're referring to. I'm not that good at spotting COI/UPE unless they are incredibly blatant. They've moved it back to mainspace again. Onel5969 TT me 21:36, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Onel5969: Thanks yeah I noticed. It's WP:WIKIED rather than UPE. I spot checked another source earlier and couldn't find any of the info cited against it in it... Haven't got time or energy to deal with it now but maybe tomorrow. SmartSE (talk) 23:50, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Yeah, there are several classes going on right now, this one, one about Indigenous Americans, and at least one other I've seen. I'll leave it in your capable hands. Onel5969 TT me 23:59, 8 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Did not realize that the editor has a conflict of interest. While there is some disagreement, there is an argument that the one carve-out to WP:DRAFTOBJECT should be UPE/COI editing. Regardless, any use of their interview is WP:OR, and cannot be used. Period. Onel5969 TT me 22:22, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Onel5969: I'm rather confused by your edits which restored content that failed verification with a COI justification... The COI tag is also a bit of a stretch to be honest unless - they have a COI in the sense that they want their article to be published to complete their class but they don't have a conflict of interest with the subject. Thanks for chipping in on the talk page though. I might struggle to reply politely at the moment. SmartSE (talk) 14:05, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi. I didn't check for the verification angle. And perhaps I misread all the dialogue, but it seems that the editor interviewed the article's subject, and then used that interview in the article. Is that incorrect? If so, my apologies (and I'll apologize to the editor as well). Onel5969 TT me 14:08, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Onel5969: Yes but that's due to a misunderstanding about how to create content rather than because they have a close connection with the subject. I see it as an OR and BLP issue rather than COI. SmartSE (talk) 14:11, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Got it. And I agree it's definitely OR, but as soon as someone establishes a connection with a subject (regardless of how that connection is made - a fan sitting down with their idol; a student interviewing a subject; a reporter interviewing a subject for that matter, and then writing a WP article on the subject), not only is it OR but also COI, imho. I base that on "Any external relationship can trigger a conflict of interest" in the main def of COI, and "When an external role or relationship could reasonably be said to undermine that primary role, the editor has a conflict of interest similar to how a judge's primary role as an impartial adjudicator would be undermined if they were married to one of the parties." which can be found at WP:EXTERNALREL. W. Ron Allen article edit

You said that my article contained "multiple BLP problems". Could you maybe give some examples? Therealethanmayfield (talk) 18:47, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Ok I found where your feedback was. I just fixed all the issues you were concerned with in the edit history. I also removed a copyrighted source and all sentences that were unsourced. I tried to fix all of the issues you found but if they are still there, could you please give me an email as I am new to wikipedia format and do not understand the view history section at all. For a slightly more in depth summary of all that I changed since the latest upload, just look at the talk page. Therealethanmayfield (talk) 19:34, 9 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Smartse, please do not move war over this article. Editors have a right to object to draftification and move their articles back to main space. It should not have been moved a second time to Draft space, much less a third time. This has resulted in move-warring. If you believe the article is unsuitable for the project, please pursue a form of deletion. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 02:20, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Liz: I regret all the drama this has caused but think that all my actions have been justified. From my first glance at the article it was apparent that there were major BLP problems and considering that it had only just been moved out of userspace, putting it back there until the problems could be addressed seemed sensible. I can't help that the user then ignored my note and moved it back. At that point given that my concern had not been addressed at all reverting the move again seemed justified. After they again moved it back, I looked into more of the article and again found numerous problems with the content - every source I checked did not support the information. It still undoubtedly contains BLP violations. At that point, deletion wasn't even a consideration as I hadn't got anywhere close to doing WP:BEFORE. The choices were either to blank everything (not ideal) or to return it to their userspace. I have since looked for sources and to be honest, meeting WP:BIO looks to be pretty shaky but given I've already been accused of harassment by both the student and their instructor/professor(?) just for doing what is completely normal in my role as an editor, I'm not very inclined to nominate it for AFD. It's no fun deleting someone else's work, but I am not going to lie, I find it absolutely batshit crazy that a student could come away from a course about how to edit here and think that interviewing a subject was the way to create content. If I explain how to edit to someone who never has before, it's literally sources, sources, sources and that seems like a pretty simple concept. It's regrettable that WIKIED introduces perverse incentives for writing articles and making them stick which do not apply to those editing voluntarily. SmartSE (talk) 13:52, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@79.37.219.48: Hello and thank you for your message – I don’t speak Italian, but hopefully this makes sense. I am sorry that you have been having a hard time. Firstly, the English and Italian Wikipedias are seperate organisations, so I do not know what has happened there. If you need help there, then you can ask at it:WP:Bar. All I know, is that Gaetano Minale was created by a group of editors that have been banned from editing since 2020. Consequently, any articles that they create are eligible for deletion. It is very frustrating for everyone involved that this company continues to promote itself to write Wikipedia articles and offers a poor service to its customers. Unfortunately there is little that we can do to stop them.
SmartSE (talk) 15:56, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Jamie Waller - entrepreneur edit

Hi, could you help me understand why you have edited the above page to remove personal reference and include details about business that I was a Director of? All businesses are Limited and as such have a board of Directors and if you have chosen to include only negative information like commercial disputes the page should also include positive like contract wins etc which would fill the page with irrelivent text e.g. about a business and not the person. Can were work on this together to get content that we both agree is accurate and about Jamie Waller? I hope we can work on this together as relevant content seems to have been removed and replaced with content that Directors are protected from by UK law. 109.170.216.76 (talk) 07:13, 7 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

It should be noted that neither I, and I assume User:Smartse, do not know who "you" are.
If you are claiming to be Jamie Waller, then please refrain from editing Jamie Waller (entrepreneur), unless you're addressing serious, possibly libelous, and verifiably false errors. see WP:AB.
If you are someone else, I ask that you please review the WP:MOS and WP:NPOV for some guidelines about maintaining a neutral point-of-view.
If the article does contain protected content, as you claim, please remove it and provide adequate justification, i.e some proof to demonstrate protection under U.K. copyright law, and why Wikipedia's inclusion does not meet the standard for Fair Dealing. I do worry about editor retention in the topic if that sort of stuff goes unchecked and people are hesitant about getting help at AE, but at least it's an improvement compared to the years before the GMO ArbCom. Draft:QOR360 edit

Thanks for all of your feedback on the draft. Having thought about the comments left by you and the other editor involved in the discussion, I’d like to take this back to Sandbox and work on it a bit more.

When I do resubmit it, given that the comments here are now longer than the draft itself, would you have any objection to my removing them? I worry that with so many comments, it would be difficult for the future AfC reviewer to get into the article itself. Most of the comments concern the resolved question of potential sock puppeting which we now all agree is not an issue with this draft.

Thanks for considering the request, and for all of your help so far. W12SW77 (talk) 22:56, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikiconsultants? edit

Hi, Smartse, how are you? Could I ask you to review this block of mine (in an area I'm not at all familiar with)?. Is there an SPI for the company, btw? Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 09:47, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Justlettersandnumbers: Looks good to me - doesn't get too much more ducky than that. The SPI is here: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/BrookeCook/Archive I'll file a case shortly. Hjared, has a distinct smell of chatgpt... SmartSE (talk) 11:59, 29 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

What's the best way to handle Kevin Finkenaur edit

Hey, good catch at Talk:Kevin Finkenaur. I want to know what you think the best way to proceed with the article would be. You mention in the block log suspected sock puppetry but as far as I understand CSD doesn't apply because the article creator wasn't banned at the time of creation, at least without knowing the puppet master (if I'm wrong with this understanding, please let me know).

I agree with what I believe you were hinting at on the talk page, this seems to be a case of using Wikipedia for public image whitewashing.

In this case, do we have to let the 7 days of {{prod}} run its course? From a green reviewer to an admin, what's the best course of action here?

Thanks, microbiologyMarcus (petri dishgrowths) 17:50, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Also wanted to flag for you Liberty Bell Moving & Storage if you haven't seen it already. If I may borrow tone from an admin on a talk page I recently saw, isn't it odd that this was created back to back with Mr. Finkenaur's article?
Cheers, microbiologyMarcus (petri dishgrowths) 17:53, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@MicrobiologyMarcus: Yes aware of them both thanks. I know that the user's a sockpuppet but just can't remember who and need to get back to my desk to look it up. I shouldn't get round to deleting them both tomorrow. If it wasn't for that though your actions so far as just what I'd have done. SmartSE (talk) 18:43, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Nice pick up. According to my notes, it looks like User:Kolapoimam. - Bilby (talk) 13:49, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Bilby: I've looked through my history quickly but can't find the job again which is annoying. Do you know who the upwork user is (email me if you like)? SmartSE (talk) 13:59, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

GA comments edit

Thanks for the GA review comments. Just wanted to let you know I got to your comments before it closed. RNAi is one of those trickier ones for categories because it is very much genetics based, but can be applied like a chemical. Usually that gets handled within the genetics topic more than chemical control, but I split out sections to help clarify which organism's genetics were being focused on. Help with the Lenovo IdeaPad page edit

Hi. I work for Lenovo, the manufacturer of IdeaPad. The current IdeaPad page has about 30+ sections and sub-sections about individual products. A lot of the information is out-dated, incomplete, etc. I disclosed a COI and requested replacing the unwieldly content with a single product table, as is done on on the ThinkPad page, so the page can focus more on history and encyclopedic content. Editors approved and added the table, but I'm unclear on what the consensus is for cleaning up the 30+ sections on each product.

I was hoping you might take a look and provide some guidance? If the 30+ sections are to remain, I'd like to update them. Best regards. StuartGill (talk) 18:07, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@StuartGill: It's best to continue as you have done by proposing changes on the talk page. You can add {{edit COI}} to ask for someone to review the edit if nobody seems to be responding. My personal thought is that the sections on all of the models is completely unreferenced so it would be completely legitimate to remove it altogether. If it can be referenced, I agree with you that a table would be better rather than numerous infoboxes and huge chunks of white space between them. I also think that sections like this violate WP:NOTCATALOG, especially when they are, as at present, completely unreferenced. I'll pop the article on my watchlist and chime in if I can. Good catch! edit

That subtle link spam as reference stuff you were taking out of the plant pages was a very good catch. I had missed it completely. Well done. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 18:21, 7 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@MtBotany: Thanks - I was just searching to check we don't have an article on biostimulant and found a mention in snake oil which read rather oddly [2]. After seeing the IP who added that also updating a dead link to the same site, I thought it was definitely worth checking eutrema.co.uk: Linksearch en (insource) - meta - de - fr - simple - wikt:en - wikt:frSpamcheckMER-C X-wikigs • Reports: Links on en - COIBot - COIBot-Local • Discussions: tracked - advanced - RSN • COIBot-Link, Local, & XWiki Reports - Wikipedia: en - fr - de • Google: searchmeta • Domain: domaintoolsAboutUs.com . Strange ref errors edit

Hi Smartse, I noticed that you fixed two strange ref errors. Unfortunately, there are a few hundreds of articles with the same issues:

Do you think that could and should be fixed by a bot? Leyo 22:50, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Leyo: Category:CS1_errors:_generic_name is the complete list of similar errors. I'm not familiar with bot requests, but I suspect that someone will get round to fixing them in an automated or semi-automated way eventually! SmartSE (talk) 11:48, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I suggested the more straight-forward fix to be resolved by a bot: Wikipedia:Bot requests#Reuters in inappropriate parameter --Leyo 13:30, 9 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

I would like to inquire about the removal for Robert T. Sakowitz. edit

Robert is a well known fashion figure in Houston Texas and is related to Lynn Wyatt who also has a wikipedia page. I am curious as to why his page was deleted. I am his IT guy and assisted in getting the page up.. As I am new to Wikipedia I see that there is a reference to a sock puppet. Can you help me with this?

GCSServiceaccount (talk) 02:26, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@GCSServiceaccount: The person that you hired to post the article had been blocked previously. Consequently all of their edits were eligible be to deleted per WP:CSD#G5. SmartSE (talk) 16:45, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I have renamed ny account and would like to follow up with the Robert Sakowitz page deletion. Can I get it undeleted to my sandbox so we can review it and make sure it meets the wikipedia page standards? I understand the original author is blocked and want to keep the data but separate from the original author. GCS-Sam (talk) 14:20, 11 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Can I request that the page be restored into my sandbox so i can try to separate it from the profile of the person who created it for Robert? GCS-Sam (talk) 16:24, 12 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GCS-Sam: Hi. Sorry I haven't been around much the last few days. Unfortunately articles that have created by a blocked user are not able to be restored and I would warn you against trying to obtain a copy because you would be eligible to be blocked if you were to repost it. I have looked at what you wrote at User:GCSServiceaccount in September but that looks unsuitable to restore as well. If you wish to recreate the article then the first step is to find good sources because from my searches, it does not look as if our notability requirements for biographies are satisfied. We need three independent, reliable sources (see WP:IRS) which provide in-depth coverage of him to merit an article. I'm happy to take a look and advise if any that you have are suitable. SmartSE (talk) 09:03, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks we will recreate it GCS-Sam (talk) 15:03, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I am an IT guy here in houston and this is my older client. He isnt that savvy about wikipedia.
We provided a CV and bio to the creator. We will reuse that info since it is his bio. since the data is common to him because it is his biography. Will reusing the bio data cause a blockage?
he ran a multi state High end department store chain for many years that his family ran until he assumed running the corporation. His family is mentioned in several different pages. His sister has her own page as a Houston Socialite. he was the winner of several citations cited in multiple publications that are available on the internet.
By reusing this info will we be blocked? We are being approached by other writers offering to help us. Im not sure how they know to contact us but are looking for guidance. GCS-Sam (talk) 15:22, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GCS-Sam: No as long as you don't copy and paste what was written then that will be fine. It doesn't make any difference what he has done, all that matters is whether people who are independent of him have written about him. I'd strongly advise you to decline any offers from writers - mosy of them do not follow our terms of use and are blocked from editing. If you can find some good sources, then create a draft at Draft:Robert Sakowitz and once you are ready to submit it for a review, add {{AFC submission}} at the top. Please also add a disclosure to your user page, explaining your relationship with the subject, as explained at WP:DISCLOSECOI. SmartSE (talk) 17:34, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
sorry to wax on about this but we paid quite a bit of money for the first page.
He has been written about many times in external publications. He is about 80 years old. SO I am sure he couldnt pull the proper creation himself. I know there are specific things that have to be done in specific ways and its a bit tricky to get it right. If we find assistance, Is it possible to provide a name or 2 of page creators to see if they are banned? GCS-Sam (talk) 09:28, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GCS-Sam: I'm not sure what it is you're asking for? The normal way that articles are created is that someone completely unrelated to the subject volunteers to write an article. The vast majority of paid editors do not comply with our policies and if you gave me a name it would be impossible for me to guarantee they are not already blocked. There is a very small list of users at Wikipedia:List_of_paid_editing_companies#Disclosed_paid_editing who do follow the rules, but that is by no means an endorsement. If you recruited the previous paid editor through Upwork, I'd suggest contacting them and asking for a refund as their users must comply with other sites Terms of Use, which they did not. Bioeffector edit

Based on doi:10.1186/s40538-017-0089-5, I would think this should also redirect to biostimulant. Shyamal (talk) 14:19, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Shyamal: Sorry about the delay and thanks for stealing biostimulant from my to do list! Bioeffector isn't a term I'm familiar with to be honest and looking at that article, my main concern is that the article creator Raupp was heavily involved in an EU-funded project called biofector: Manfred G. Raupp. One difference I see between how that article defines bioeffector and how biostimulants are defined, is that that biological control agents as bioeffectors, whereas biostimulants are improving growth/yield outside of any effect on pests. This paper uses bioeffector as the term for applying bacteria to citrus fruit to change the chemical composition of the peel, which again is not something that would come under the biostimulant definition. So I think that they are distinct topics and potentially biostimulants are a subclassification of bioeffector, but we would need a source to back that up. The bioeffector article definitely needs work to remove the bias from that research project which essentially considered them synonymous with biostimulants: [3] bio-effectors (microorganisms and natural compounds with the ability to improve growth, nutrient acquisition and stress tolerance of crops). SmartSE (talk) 12:30, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. To be honest, that article was not picked by me. I was doing some outreach at a university and asked the participants to pick an entry that they found to be missing for a basic demonstration of article creation (and I have warned them that they would need to go through the AFC process if and when they get on board)... Thanks, I will wait for someone to close that merge discussion at some point. Shyamal (talk) 13:49, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
