UK Waterways in the Signpost

"WikiProject Report" would like to focus on WikiProject UK Waterways for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Also, if you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 01:13, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedians at IC

Hi there! I'm Vinesh Patel, trying to found Wikipedians at Imperial College as a society. I noticed your message at the bottom of our Signpost mention - do you have any links with College or any feedback on the idea? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinnypatel (talkcontribs) 20:02, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Simply south, thanks for your message. Yes, have just gotten into signing posts but forgot then, thanks. I tried the Wikipedians by alma mater page and sent out a real bunch of messages, but nothing came back! Please let me know if you know anybody at Imperial who might be interested if you think it's a good idea.Vinnypatel (talk) 22:08, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

If so, would you mind photographing:

Reading to Plymouth Line

After several years of discussion the consensus was to split the Reading to Plymouth Line article into three articles - Bristol to Exeter line, Reading to Taunton line, and Exeter to Plymouth line. The split has now been done, though fairly crudely as I am not an expert on the subject. It will need an expert eye to look at it and smooth out the edges. Merrythought

Thank you for the DYK nomination - I did think about doing it before, but wasn't sure! Also, thanks for your edits to the page. I will try to get some photos of actual Merrythought teddy bears when I get my hands on some, in the near future hopefully! David (talk) 17:20, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Yeah the only one of those three I would use is the teddy fence one, but the one on the article page is good enough and I think actually shows them in a better (post-restored?) state. I wouldn't make the page too image-heavy: perhaps when there's some better photos of the factory exterior/actual teddy bears available (I'll try to get round in the next month or two to take them myself) a gallery section can be added to the article. David (talk) 18:11, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm just not sure if the factory one would really add anything to the article. It's a bit dull and generic really! And yes, the cottage is just opposite the factory, on the other side of The Wharfage. Nothing to do with Merrythought. David (talk) 19:11, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
I have found a teddy bear photo on flickr which hopefully can be used on Wikipedia. I'll give it a go. David (talk) 20:14, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
Teddy bear photo seems to work out fine (and is allowed etc). I see you wikilinked Ironworkers of Ironbridge — do you think this will have an article/are you intending to write it, or should the wikilink be removed? David (talk) 20:43, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Castle Green

Thanks for adding the images to the Castle Park article - I had seen them in Commons but was hoping to get hold of early 20th century photos rather than etchings, to clarify the point that the area still had much of its mediaeval charm in 1939. For now I intend to change the captions to say where the images fit into the street plan, hope you don't mind.

Also, sorry if this smacks of eggs and grandmothers, but are you aware that Castle Green was the name of a street? Here it is [1] Castle Green on pre-war map]. When I checked your edit ('sometimes known as Castle Green') I was surprised to see how right you were! I presume the idiomatic name comes from a folk memory of the old street. Template:LOG stations

Hi Simply south, one or more of your changes to this template on the 28th of February broke the template such that Whitechapel was incorrectly displaying as the next/last/terminal station, even when it wasn't - see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways#Next station Whitechapel?. I've reverted all the changes you've made that day, which has fixed the problem, even though I don't understand why what you did broke anything.

I'm not clear what your change was intended to do, so I've not been able to check what, if anything, broke as a result of my unmaking them - please do this. Please also check in future that any changes you make to templates do not break existing uses. Thryduulf (talk) 18:14, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Artichoke-Boy

Hi, Artichoke-Boy here (remember me?). I want to thank you for giving me a barnstar on July of 2010, and I also want to apologize for my extremely late reply (...maybe "extremely" is too light a word!).

I would normally respond to messages as quickly as possible, but I have been unable to edit Wikipedia or even check my talk page for the past 10 months or so (due to personal reasons). I may be able to resume editing in the not-too-distant future, and I’ll be sure to contribute to the Motto of the Day project again.

Thanks again for the barnstar. ---Artichoke-Boy (talk)(sign) 22:24, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Tornado outbreak

  • Please move the outbreak page back to its original title. I had this discussion with another editor who did the same thing. There is no need to specify the location within the article title as there wasn't another major outbreak (or any other outbreak) at the same time. Most of the world's tornadoes take place within the United States so it's always assumed that the outbreak is in the country unless otherwise specified. MOTD's State of Emergency + 1st of May's Motto

As you probably already know, we are facing some problems at MOTD. I am personally monitoring all the nominations on a daily basis and I'm finding very difficult to aprove the motto for the next day. The number of nominations has grown significantly, but even then it seems not enough. Please, if you have time, take a look at the nominations. And, if you like some of them but you think they are not good enough for being approved because of the set of links or and etcetera, please, try to improve them where it is possible. At this rate, I fear that we will see the end of the project. Thanks in advance.
I have also added a special nomination for this Sunday, 1st of May (International Workers' Day or May Day). Please, take a look at it if you can.
All the best. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 15:07, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

P.S.: I'm sorry to bother you again, but take a look at this if you can. Once again, thank you. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 18:29, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Small bit of advice

While scrolling down the TalkPage for the Royal Wedding, my eye (and curiousity) was caught by your new tagline (congrats on 5 years, BTW). So, I wandered over to your review request page...

If I were a reviewing admin, I might look oddly at a review request that didn't follow the instructions regarding entering the Username param for the sub-page: "Please make sure there is no space after your username, as this makes it hard for reviewers to reach your request."

Hope this helps. Cheers! — DennisDallas (talk) 17:32, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

Mother's Day 2011 or 2012

Okay, I'm here again to bother you (again and again... sorry). Things seem to go much better at MOTD, right now. THANK YOU!!!
The reason why I'm writing you is the following: next Sunday (8th of May) is Mother's Day. I know that it is celebrated on different days around the world, but I'd love if we could (and are able to) make our "very-little" contribution in honour of all the mothers in the world. For the upcoming 8th of May (Sunday) there is already a motto in schedule, but I think that we can move the motto approved for that day to another date and to put one about mothers in place of it. Here is my nomination.
Thank you in advance and all the best! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 12:50, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

MOTD Barnstar for helping to keep our project "alive"

  The MOTD Barnstar
I award the MOTD Barnstar to Simply south for helping to keep our project "alive" during this difficult time. Without you and your so precious help and contributions, we all probably would have seen the end of this project. A BIG THANK YOU!!! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 19:46, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

A brief note, please, read it carefully, especially the last part in bold: The last time we (our project) gave awards to our (its) members on last Summer, then the number of new nominations and reviews of the existing nominations has been diminishing. The end result was the "April crisis" with no mottos for about an entire week. On the contrary, I hope this award will help to maintain our level high or, at least, appropriate to its needs, the needs of our project. I think that around 10 minutes a week to "devote" to the project, when it is possible of course, should be more than enough to achieve the desired result.
Of course, I gave you this award personally, in a personal way and not in the name of the project. This is just a way to say a BIG thank you, so, refrain from returning the award to me or I would be overwhelmed by stars and banners and it is not my intention to "profit" on this, really! Please, do NOT return the award! And, there is no need to thank me, it was my pleasure.
Thanks again (I think I can speak for all the contributors to MOTD) and all the very best!!! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 19:46, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

UK Light Rail Template

There was formerly another template, a list of Metro systems and undergrounds in the UK which used to appear on several pages such as LU, Merseyrail, Glasgow Underground. In the discussion of that template it was decided to decomission it and merge it with the Light Rail template as theres no definitive defintion between the two and a Metro could still be a light rail. There is also another Metro template Template:Britishmetros which you yourself created without any support or challenge but it is only used once as an illustration on a page discussing UK passenger rail Rail_transport_in_Great_Britain and a couple of legacy appearance where no one cleaned it from before it was recreated by you such as appearing on Docklands rolling stock page but not the Docklands article itself. The concensus was that there should be one template that listed all the non National Rail systems rather than multiple and so the 'Metro' section was created on the more popular Light Rail template.

--WatcherZero (talk) 00:36, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Sorry If you didnt create it but I was going by your comments here Template_talk:UK_light_rail, Problem is any discussion will get bogged down into dicussion of what is Light Rail? which has no definable or concensus agreement going by past discussions and then there will be those who hijack it to argue that Merseyrail is an underground metro. Anyway back to the issue at hand, its one debatable (with multiple proponents and opponents) inclusion which simplifies the rail templates across many pages and for which most people seem happy for it to be there. The LU is clearly not Heavy rail and while it is light rail in technology through frequency and sometimes capacity some argue not light rail in a operational sense. Since theres no medium or inbetween cataegory to put it in people were happy for its inclusion in this template.

P.S. The agreed wiki definition is here under which its Light not heavy Passenger_rail_terminology#Heavy_rail --WatcherZero (talk) 01:58, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Wrotham Park Lodge

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Wrotham Park Lodge requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 06:21, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

List of Docklands Light Railway stations - Geographical coordinates

A number of the geographic coordinates give for stations are incorrect. I haven't checked them all, but several of the first few produce locations near Biggin Hill and Farleigh in south London.--DavidCane (talk) 23:09, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

I've checked those on the individual station articles, and if the coords were in a separate {{coord}} near to the bottom, I've altered it to |latitude=|longitude= in the infobox; this has placed a map in the infobox. When doing so I noticed that South Quay DLR station was still showing as the pre-2009 location, so I've fixed that. Checking by following the coordinates links shows that all DLR station articles (whether altered by me or not) were within 100 metres or so (with the exception of South Quay as noted above), so you can use those to check against. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:37, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
I was rather sloppy when I did them first. I kind of looked at the article without checking the source code and that is why the first time around it produced some surprising results. The second time around I thought it was just to do with inserting | in an order but I got that wrong as the template did not work at all. Hey, third time's the charm, which I checked with GeoHack and found I didn't need to use Google Maps or anything similar, as well as checking the source code and that's what got them corrected.
Thanks for the South Quay spot. Simply south...... improving for 5 years 15:58, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
