Adminship

Have you ever been nominated? I'm curious, 'cause I stumbled on your page and was surprised to see you weren't one already, with such a good record. Mr. IP (talk) 22:01, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

If it's something you're interested in, I'd nominate you, or find someone better-known than myself to do it. But if you're not interested in that path, that makes sense, too. It can't be a lot of fun. Mr. IP (talk) 05:45, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Metaxas (disambiguation)

I just wanted to let you know why I deleted the disambiguation page, Metaxas (disambiguation), that you recently created. It turns out there was already a disambiguation page for the term at Metaxas, and since there is no primary topic, the disambiguation page should be located at the term without "(disambiguation)". I incorporated the links you had put at Metaxas (disambiguation) into Metaxas, though - thanks for finding them! -- Natalya 10:52, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Not a problem! -- Natalya 17:31, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Have fun

Have a check of my user page and see how many arts we have in the Wikipedia project - and on the assumption that about 10% are actually referenced - there are few more if you like :( - but thanks for even one - the actual real time and real life chances of Indonesian articles actually getting a WP:RS are about 1:4325 with about at least a hundred other conditions affecting the odds SatuSuro 06:07, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Template:Infobox nrhp3

Hey, Rosiestep. First off, I'm glad you're helping out on creating NRHP articles; I do notice, however, that you're using Template:Infobox nrhp3. NRHP3 is meant as a test version of NRHP2; all NRHP articles should have NRHP2 infoboxes - not NRHP3. The only reason User:Doncram and I changed Nevada Theatre to use NRHP3 was for test purposes. We're still trying to come to consensus about a feature of the infobox, and if you want to participate, see this discussion. For now, though, please try to create articles with Template:Infobox nrhp2. Currently Home of Lotta Crabtree and Mount Saint Mary's Convent and Academy use NRHP3, but I left them alone because they utilize the feature about which we're discussing and may be good examples. I changed Boca Dam to use nrhp2 because there was no feature conflict with it. Thanks for your participation! --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 18:16, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Nunavut island page errors

I get a Fastcgi Protocol Error when I click on the coords link in the info box of the island pages you recently created. For example, Middle Savage Islands and Ascension Islands. Could you please check into that. Do you get a similar error? Thanks. Truthanado (talk) 00:32, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

The error is in any page with coordinates in them. It's not just limited to the newer pages. I left a comment at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Coodinate problem. Leave them in for now. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 04:03, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
It's really odd. Some things work but others don't. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 04:43, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
It appears to be working again. See User talk:CambridgeBayWeather#Nunavut island page errors, User talk:LeheckaG#GeoGroupTemplate and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates#Fastcgi error for more information. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 09:58, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
Very interesting, and excellent detective work by CambridgeBayWeather, LeheckaG and the Wikimmunity. I have noticed recently that sometimes coords links give unusual results (typically the scale is not what you'd expect); this was the first time, though where it just didn't work and generated an error message. It's good to hear that things should be working back to normal again. Isn't software wonderful? In case you're wondering, I work in the software industry so this kind of thing is fairly routine. Thanks to all. Truthanado (talk) 21:37, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
The "moral" of the story is to supply |region:XX-YY| coordinates parameter in a Coor(d) template after the coordinates, where for instance XX is CA for Canada and YY is the appropriate 2-letter abbreviation for the Province or Territory (AB, BC, ... YT - technically ISO 3166-1 and -2 codes although they are the same as 2-letter postal abbreviations). When a region: code is omitted, server performance issues can result in the error message. LeheckaG (talk) 22:41, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
I had previously looked at the 1st. (2) CA-NU articles listed on User:CambridgeWeather talk page, so I "spot-checked" the 3rd. - Carter Island, both article Coord source code and map results look Good to me.
I was curious how region actually gets used. Looking through GeoTemplate and geohack.php it appears that along with some other things region: is used to determine which GeoTemplate is used (there are different GeoTemplates for each language-region/Wikipedia - En English, De Deutsch (German), ...). There seems to be some carry-over from when there apparently used to be separate Wikipedia:Map sources/region pages. So although the code determines it when it is not supplied (which is what triggered the Fastcgi Protocol Error issue), it then only uses it when it cannot otherwise figure out which Wikipedia and GeoTemplate is the appropriate one.
A "new" use for region: and type: is apparently being developed or forseen though. When specified region: and type: allow a "bot" (program) to go through Wikipedia articles and determine all "island" in "CA-NU" for instance can check whether they are in the appropriate (Category:) categories. Nevada County edits

Hi, check out new table format now at List of Registered Historic Places in California#Nevada County. I noticed you were editing there, probably to clear red-links, decided to upgrade to table format that can accomodate pics, short descriptions.

Also, by the way, in a list of Registed Historic Places like this, the convention is to leave the NRHP program name showing, perhaps piping to an article name. An article name can be a common name, different than the NRHP name. And, a redirect can be set up from the NRHP name to the article name of a given site.

The NRHP name also should show in the NRHP infobox, even if different from the article name.

Just in case you were unaware, you can create the county tables using Elkman's County generator. The output often needs cleanup, but it's a great starting point.--Appraiser (talk) 21:11, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Also, I moved French Corral to French Corral, California, to be consistent with place naming conventions.

Just trying to keep you informed, as i made a bunch of changes. Hope you like the table format, let me know if you want that added for any other counties. Cheers, doncram (talk) 00:29, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar of appreciation. As Appraiser's note above suggests, i am applying an automated tool, the Elkman NRHP county-table generator. Recently i did 72 or so county tables in Indiana, and I am working on New York counties. Alas, you don't specify which CA counties are needed, so i guess i will just have to do all the remainder (San Francisco, Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego already done). A separate medal for each new one would be most welcomed.  :) doncram (talk) 21:16, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

HABS material

Hi -- I wonder if you are aware of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) / Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) material available for Nevada County CA sites. Searching on "Nevada County CA" at http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/hhquery.html yields 32 hits on the exact phrase. I notice it has pics for a hotel in Rough and Ready, for example, which could be added to the article on the California Historical Landmark.

The photos and drawings in HABS / HAER are public domain, can be uploaded to Commons and included in articles. And the "data pages" text descriptions are often very good reports that are good references.

As an example of adding an external link, which is easiest, i just added one to HABS material for Mount Saint Mary's Convent and Academy. I could comment more about uploading HABS/HAER pics, which is a little more involved if you are doing a good job with it, if you are interested. Cheers, doncram (talk) 19:45, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Incidentally, if you're keen to keep your assessing skills honed, we are currently very short of reviewers for Milhist A-Class reviews. Broadly, the five A-Class criteria are just beefed up versions of the B-Class criteria and anyone with B-Class experience should have no trouble with them. Also, as a reminder, in the wide-ranging A-Class review, it is not necessary to comment on all five criteria: if you're short of time, you can simply focus on the aspects that interest you most (sources, comprehensiveness, prose, graphic content or whatever). You can track which articles are up for A-Class using this template: {{WPMILHIST A-Class Review alerts}} All the best, --ROGER DAVIES talk 07:41, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your initial comments at the FAC for Battle of Goliad. Just in case you aren't following the FAC closely, I just wanted to let you know that inline citations are not required in the lead unless there are quotations or controversial text.
