Ahiarmiut and not Ihalmiut?

I was starting on an article for Henik Lake when I found this, look for "Nueltin Lake (1949)". I then found THE AHIARMIUT RELOCATIONS, page 2 and then page 23 on. I also saw this but I'm not sure how relilable it is. The thing is that most of the online mentions of Ihalmuit come from Mowat and that presents a bit of a problem, see Farley Mowat#Criticism. There is another editor who is reading "People of the Deer" and I've asked them if the book indicates where Mowat got Ihalmiut from. I also got Nueltin Lake and Kikkik done. I'll take a look at the Ihalmiut now. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 05:59, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

A direct quote from "The People of the Deer", "They called themselves Ihalmiut - which means The Other People - as distinct from those Eskimos who lived at the coasts and possessed a sea culture." I noticed too that Ihalmiut says "or Ahiarmiut (people of the deer)" but Caribou Inuit says "Ahiarmiut ("The Out-of-the-Way Dwellers")". I think the Caribou Inuit term is probably correct otherwise the name would involve "tuktu". Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 17:45, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Just looking at what I wrote here indicates that I forgot a bit. Several years ago there was a push on to update written Inuit languages in Canada when using the Latin script. This would enable them to be pronounced correctly. Because where I live the language was already written using Latin script the changes became very noticable as opposed to the eastern Arctic which uses the syllabics. This leads to odd spellings being seen such as the name of our primary school is "Kullik Ilihakvik" but should be "Qulliq" as in Qulliq Energy. Probably the best known of these would be "Kabloonak" which is now "Qablunaaq" or "Qallunaaq" depending on the dialect. So I too suspect that Ahiarmiut is a updated English rendition of Ihalmiut. As to the French I can't help there as I have no ability in any other language than English. In fact it's so bad that I was removed from the mandatory French lessons to work on other things rather than waste everybodys time. Kuugjuarmiut is probably an alternate spelling of Kuujjuarmiut or "people of the big river". In this case not people from Kuujjuaq, Quebec on the Koksoak River, but people who lived near the Kuujjua River on Victoria Island (Canada). CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 12:57, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Ihalmiut

Looks pretty good. I added a couple more references to the alternate name and some mor links. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 06:09, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

I think to a certain extent the criticism is more to do with some of his later works, although The Thelon & Kazan Caribou Inuit - 'People of the Deer' makes reference to his nickname. I had some links but I'm at work and the links are at home. One of them was a map that showed the general areas of various Inuit groups in Canada but not the tribal specific names. I did at one time have a much better map with a real breakdown of individual groups but I've not been able to find it again. I was also looking at a university site that appears to have a lot of information but is a Wiki so I'm not sure yet how relilable it is. While looking for information on Ahiarmiut I found Cambdige Bay's Angulalik. I was surprised because the Queen Maud Gulf would seem a bit out of the usual range. Arvia'juaq National Historic Site

Sorry I forgot to mention that I moved it to Arvia'juaq and Qikiqtaarjuk National Historic Site based on the references. I got distracted over at youtube watching my cultural heritage, The Corries and Billy Connelly. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 04:53, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Ambiguous "Irish" link

Hi, nice work on the Irish surnames pages, Mac Néill, Mac Giolla, etc. You've used the link Irish though, which is ambiguous and can refer to the people, the island, the language, the country, etc., etc. I wonder if I could suggest Irish instead, or you may feel that Irish or Irish is more appropriate. Either way, keep up the good work! :-) Gil Gamesh (talk) 11:31, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Colville Lake, Northwest Territories

I took out the infobox you put in as it's a community and not a lake. I then created the lake article at Colville Lake (Northwest Territories) with the infobox. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 04:12, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

I had to check twice to make sure it was a community. If it hadn't been for your edit summary I would have never even looked at the edit. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 04:41, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Stephen Angulalik

Nice article there. I just wanted to let you know that I don't normally change US to British spellings but in this case the reference was to a "Sergeant" in the RCMP. By the way my oldest grandson on his mothers side is descended from Angulalik. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 05:57, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello Rosie. Could you please add the assessment (class and importance) too when you place the banner WikiProject Canada. This would save time for other editors that would have to go through the pages and do the assessment. Thank you. --Qyd (talk) 22:54, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

External map service links

Hello. You have been identified as having added or removed direct external map service links in articles[1]. There is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:External links#Issues with inclusion or exclusion of map service links about which should be done, and some more opinions would be good to find community consensus. --Para (talk) 23:10, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Your contributions history shows that you have been aggressively cross-posting, in order to influence Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Schools#AfD_nom_Coffee_High_School. Although the Arbitration Committee has ruled that "The occasional light use of cross-posting to talk pages is part of Wikipedia's common practice."1, such cross-posting should adhere to specific guidelines. In the past, aggressively worded cross-posting has contributed towards an Arbitration Committee ruling of disruptive behavior that has resulted in blocks being issued. It is best not to game the system, and instead respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building, by ceasing to further crosspost, and instead allowing the process to reflect the opinions of editors that were already actively involved in the matter at hand. Stephen Angulalik 2

I found two pictures for the article. After uploading the Image:Stephen Angulalik and his wife Kuptana.jpg I became a bit unsure about the usage so I have emailed the Prince of Wales Heritage Centre to see if it's OK. If so they may have others that can be used. Of course Library and Archives Canada may have pictures that can be used in other Northern articles but finding them may be difficult. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 07:38, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

I forgot to come back and let you know that based on the email I got from the Prince of Wales Heritage Centre we can't use any of their pictures. I replied to them saying that the line at Stephen Angulalik and his wife Kuptana saying "Copyright: No copyright restrictions." is a bit confusing as it gives the impression that there is no copyright. As for using the images from the Commons, it's just the same format as if the image was here. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 03:18, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
If you go to the external links in the Angulalik article there is a link to the PWHC and LAC that have other pictures of him. The PWHC shows his first wife while the LAC here has his third wife. When I asked the PWHC I had also been talking about some other images that did appear to have copyrights, like this one by Father Tardy, and I think that we may have mixed up which pictures could be used. Newby Twinkle user

helpme --Rosiestep (talk) 04:15, 26 March 2008 (UTC) I've made thousands of wiki edits with IE, but today is my first day using FireFox, Friendly and Twinkle. I'm having newby problems with Friendly and Twinkle but instead of asking several techno questions right now, I've decided to call it a night. Tomorrow, I'll review the instructions pages again and maybe it'll be clearer. Cheers. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:36, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Feel free to put the helpme tag back and ask any questions when you do. For now I've removed the tag as it gives regular messages on IRC. KTC (talk) 07:07, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

No worries. I had the page on my watchlist (I was the one that added it to the split list) so saw your edits and while there were a few issues I assumed you had those in hand so rather than just get into an edit conflict fixing those I thought I might as well do other bits and bobs and add the header and move it from the proposed split to new articles section.
