Jared Leto

I noticed the Jared Leto#Awards page did not cite any references, and I added the cite template. I also cleaned up the format a little. Since I havent done this before, could you tell me if I have done this correctly, specifically the cite tag? I'm trying to help Wikipedia be a better place (its already great!!) and make changes where I see the potential for improvement but I also want to make sure I am doing so correctly. Michaelh2001 (talk) 20:23, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

  • Thanks, I have made the improvements you recommended. Please let me know what you think. Also, I added the "Refimprove" tag to La Luz del Mundo. Other then the addition I made this evening, which I sourced, there are no other citations or references. You'll see what I mean... Michaelh2001 (talk) 04:16, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

Category:Ports and harbours of Nunavut

Hi. I was curious about the category. Was it intended to be only for places with harbour or port in the name or for anywhere in Nunavut that is/was a harbour or port. If the latter then most current communities, with the exception of Baker Lake, would probably qualify. Enter CambridgeBayWeather, waits for audience applause, not a sausage 06:36, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi CBW. It appears to me when I looked at other geo regions who use this category that it's for articles about ports and harbours; and for articles about a locality if there's info about its port/harbour within the article. I think if an article about a current/former community has info about its port/harbour, then that would qualify. But let me know if that's your interpretation. A few that I wondered about are the historic site of Port Refuge on Devon Island, and Port Burwell at Killiniq, on Killiniq Island -- I haven't done any real research on them, just some googling, so not sure if they would qualify. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:53, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
I added a few of the more obvious ones, Nanisivik, Nunavut because of the deep water port to be built, Pangnirtung, Nunavut because the PM recently discussed the harbour there and Gjoa Haven, Nunavut due to Amundsen calling it "the finest little harbor in the world". Another possible one is Bathurst Inlet but I'm not sure about the other places. Enter CambridgeBayWeather, waits for audience applause, not a sausage 17:08, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Those are good ones. BTW, I'm going to split out the harbour "Port Burwell (Nunavut)"[1] from Killiniq, Nunavut. As it's also going to require edits to the redirect and dab pages, I'll get to it when I can concentrate on making all the edits, in addition to creating the article. --Rosiestep (talk) 17:37, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

LGBT Wikiproject on Levi Johnston Discussion page

When you have time, could you review the edits made to the Levi Johnston Talk/Discussion page by User:Kelly? The user added "LGBT Wikiproject" to the discussion page, and I can think of no other reason then it being some form of vandalism. If thats the case, then it damages not only the articles discussion page, but also the LGBT Wikiproject. I deleted it from the talk page, (Just look at the history) but I dont know how to approach the user about it. Thanks Michaelh2001 (talk) 14:07, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Ah, I think I remember that edit. No vandalism intended, I think I had been reading an article or two that Johnston was now a gay icon.[2] No problem with the template being removed, it's not a big deal to me. Kelly hi! 07:55, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Spanish culture

Hi Rosie, please see User talk:Fritzpoll#Point. if you have any suggestions please say so... I'll need your help in sorting them once this batch is generated. Himalayan 20:45, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Solving the problem of actually getting the articles onto here is more more difficult. It is quite frankly giving me a serious headache looking at the sheer amount of mising content. Check out Category:Almeria for instance on Spanish wiki... Himalayan 22:04, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Wikimedia definately has to do something about this. I find it ridiculous that there are only a handful of people in the entire world who are interested in practising translations and in an encyclopedia. Himalayan 07:11, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Did you know about translatewiki.net? Seems they have the same goals as us. Incidentally a number of them are also involved in the open street map project, two sister projects I demanded on here WikiAtlas and WikiTranslation but for some very peculiar reason wikia do not accept them "officially". Anyway after Angela's direction I've posted on all the main pages there for them to try to organize contacting schools. Which is not really good enough as wikia should be responsible themsevles for developing wikipedia.. Himalayan 13:15, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Dunno, We need something 1000 times the scale we have at present. That site looks pretty much useless to me in terms of actual work. It is best done within wikipedia itself... Why somebody can't contact language schools I don't know... Himalayan 18:36, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Sure thing. Also, a question for you - once CatScan generates the lists, do you know of a way to remove the category links other than manually? In other words, can CatScan generate only a list of the articles in each category, without further linking to the categories themselves? I can do it manually, but I was wondering if there was a quicker way. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:44, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Ports

I would say yes. Either as a standalone cat or as part of the overall cat. I've asked at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ports#Ports in Nunavut to see if there is some sort of consensus as to what a port is for categorisation. It does, actually. It's tedious, but it works. Basically, I was able to run a recursive catscan on Category:Japan geography stubs, which pulls all of the stubs in all of the categories within it. I then tell the program to replace one stub tag with another, and to automatically ignore any that don't need replacement. It runs through them quickly enough that my input is minimal, until such time as I actually have to OK the replacement. It's a little longer than the other way, but it'll do until CatScan is up and running again. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:51, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, so far I've found 29, but there's a ways to go as yet. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:24, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
OK, between the two of us we've pulled 63 into the category, it would appear. I'll keep AWB running to catch anything that may have slipped through the cracks. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:11, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Agreed - at this point anything else will be gravy. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:17, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
OK - I'm finished. Caught a couple of others, so there are 67 in total in the category (68, with the tag itself.) Anything else you'd like me to look at? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 23:51, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

OK, I've done the poets tonight; I'll do the rest tomorrow. Question for you: when you search for stubs using CatScan, how many bytes do you set as your parameter when prompted? I've been using 2,000, which I think just about covers it. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 05:31, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Excellent - glad to know my instincts were right on the money here. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:40, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Glad to be of any assistance I can be. Perhaps I'll go and do a manual sweep for extras once I'm done with the regular stuff - anything over 2,000 would best be served manually, I think, for weeding-out purposes. Anyhow, poets and nonfiction writers are done; I should have the others finished up by the end of the night.
Job change I understand well...haven't undergone one in some little time, but I remember what the transition was like. I'm just glad I've been stable enough, time-wise, to get some substantial editing done recently. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:26, 25 October 2009 (UTC)

Looking through the page history, it seems that the person assembling the set of hooks for the queue copied the original hook, not the revised version with two hooks. I then moved the set of hooks to the main page queue, and didn't realise that there might be a problem. I'm sorry about this, but all is not lost. I suggest that you add a hook about the artist himself to the 1 November list at T:TDYK. Let me know when you've done so, and I'll verify it for you. Any problems, let me know. Christian Klengenberg

Yes, I am a bit. He's a ancestor of most of my relatives including my ex and of course my kids, one of whom is named after him. The book, Klengenberg of the Arctic, is available online. I'm just on my way out the door so I'll take a look at it after. I'll show it to the relatives. They'll be amused, especially as it contains the part about him killing a couple of people. Enter CambridgeBayWeather, waits for audience applause, not a sausage 23:50, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

I looked but it appears that we don't have any Wikipedia articles about his family. I have asked Moonriddengirl if the book would be out of copyright so a link to the work could be made and the images uploaded to Wikipedia, see User talk:Moonriddengirl#Quick question about copyright. Although it can't be put in the article his wife, Gremnia, to some extent influenced the style of clothing in the region. I've emailed some links that you may find interesting. Thanks. Giving me the last link to the KHS jogged my memory. Seeing the pictures made me go and look at Archives Canada and I was able to find a picture. It's better than the one in the book. Archives Canada has the wrong names on there. Enter CambridgeBayWeather, waits for audience applause, not a sausage 02:47, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
I emailed Archives Canada to let them know about the error. I may have found another one though. If you look here item 10 should be a picture of Charlie and according to the little blue box should be online. However, clicking on the link brings up the page but no picture. I then found this and using the number given I searched the archives again. I found this page and clicking on item 2 led me to the description linked above. But there are three pages of links so I can't be positive. I'll go to the library and check with the KHS people but I can't get there until Wednesday afternoon. With a bit of luck they will be able to help make sure that it is the same picture. Enter CambridgeBayWeather, waits for audience applause, not a sausage 04:27, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
No problem. Normally it is cold and should be −24 °C (−11 °F) to −31 °C (−24 °F) but this year it's about −10 °C (14 °F) and looks to be fairly mild for the rest of the week. Of course today was the last of the sun until January 12 and then it really gets cold. Once the sun returns we start getting the 40 °C (104 °F) to −45 °C (−49 °F) temperatures. Norwegian polar explorers etc.

Hi Rosie. I'm just dropping by to say a couple of things. First of all, I really admire your work on polar explorers/polar issues, there's a lot still to be done on that front and I'm looking forward to your future contributions.

On that issue, I noticed that you needed a photo for your Gunnar Isachsen article, so I got you five. You see, the National Library of Norway has published tons of copy right-free (attribution required) images on their website. Just see how I downloaded the Isachsen photos for a guide on how to do it. The National Library has photos of all the Norwegian polar explorers, so that should be quite useful for you. Just go to their search function and type in what you're looking for. I find that searching for last names works especially well. This is what I got when I searched for Isachsen, even photos of the man's villa. Best of luck and happy continued editing. If you have any questions regarding what I've just said, then just drop me a line at my talk, although I might not always be able to respond as quickly as I'd like to. Manxruler (talk) 20:34, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

That's perfectly all right. There's a large gap in Wiki with regards to polar explorers/expeditions, and I'm very happy that you're helping out in mending that. If you encounter any difficulties, then of course I'll be glad to help. The search word "Fram" alone gave 307 hits in the photo data base, so I think there should be plenty to work with. :) Manxruler (talk) 05:23, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
The best way of downloading the photos needed would of course be to get an account over at Wikimedia Commons, if you haven't already got one, and download them there. Manxruler (talk) 05:27, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
Well, I suppose I could keep an eye out and add photos to your polar articles when they are available, when I have the time and opportunity. Content is after all the important thing. As for translations over at the National Library, there aren't any. The National Library's digital collections (photos, books, etc.) are aimed solely at the Norwegian public. I even suspect that not all parts of their website are available from non-Norwegian IP addresses. Manxruler (talk) 16:25, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
