Disambiguating vandalism

I notice that you made this edit at Richard Challoner. Do you have any reason to believe that information is correct? I am currently reverting a vandalism-only account and they changed the birth place from the apparently correct Lewes in the edit immediately before yours. The fact that you fixed their edit may make others believe the information is correct. Johnuniq (talk) 09:30, 7 January 2020 (UTC)

Saw you reverted to the older photo... Is there any way you could put the updated photo back? I clearly know very little about wiki, but appreciate any help!

Do not want an outdated and bad photo as the main wiki photo though... thanks!

Bezel vs screen bezel

There is no article for the red wikilink you are deliberately creating to Screen bezel. There is a one liner about a screen bezel on the Bezel page. Until there is an article on screen bezel, you are deliberately linking to a broken/non-existent wikilink. I think other articles should link to Bezel where what a screen bezel is, is already explained in a one liner. - xpclient Talk 13:17, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello Rodw,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon

Hi. The Wikipedia:The Great Britain/Ireland Destubathon is planned for March 2020, a contest/editathon to eliminate as many stubs as possible from all 134 counties. Amazon vouchers/book prizes are planned for most articles destubbed from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and Northern Ireland and whoever destubs articles from the most counties out of the 134. Sign up on page if interested in participating, hope this will prove to be good fun and productive, we have over 44,000 stubs!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:10, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Are you OK Rod, burned out from wiki editing? Given your central role in the Southwest contest I'd hoped you'd be interested by this but if you're not up to it, no worries.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:46, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
  •   Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
  •   Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
  •   Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
  •   CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
  • The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included   L293D,   Kingsif,   Enwebb,   Lee Vilenski and   CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup newsletter correction

There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter;   L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead,   Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. Advice please

Hi, and thanks for fixing a DAB link added by me by mistake in Acute Misfortune . However I have a question about the second one in that article, Q&A, where you've added the dn template. The Q&A DAB page has a description of the most common meaning of the expression, rather containing a link to a separate article on it. When I linked to this page while editing the film page and saw the description pop up when previewing, it looked appropriate, so I published. As far as I can see, the only option is to unlink the term, which means that readers cannot easily discover what it means unless explained in the film article... Am I missing something? That Vaneeza Ahmad page

Hi Rodw, surprised at the coincidence of you coming from Ramsgate and me being near Canterbury. About Vaneeza Ahmad where you or a bot in your name correctly recently added a disambiguation. I'd removed common links for occupations as they seem to fall foul of MOS:OVERLINK, and across all person pages of a random sample I looked up, no occupations were linked in their info boxes. So there's precedent and guidance on not having these be linked, however the page appears to be someone's pet project and they like to put them back. In the big scheme of things the links don't matter, but it is nice to approach correctness and consistency where possible. What are your thoughts? Linking of common occupations is fine even though it's not generally done and the MOS discourages it? Apply for semi-protection on the page so the user has to register an account and engage in discussions about content if necessary? Other suggestions? (I noted they had a short term ban recently which was ineffective as their IP changes) Moggie2002 (talk) 14:46, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  •   Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
  •   Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
  •   The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
  •   Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
  •   Lee Vilenski with 869 points,   Hog Farm with 801,   Kingsif with 719,   SounderBruce with 710,   Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and   MX with 515.

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! The Civil Service Lobbygate link

On the Civil Service Page you changed the "Lobbygate Link" to Mister Draper. Which seems to be only on the basis that he was one of several people involved in the events. I do think the link I had put in place was not the best, but Draper is less usefully encyclopaedic. Rather than just switching it back, and because I cannot see a specific Lobbygate page but I can see several pages that have some subsection about Lobbygate, is there any value in creating a Lobbygate Entry independently of the page? In my view, the shorter should be the name of the article not the protectorate. If you think that makes sense and are willing to assist and have the technical. / procedural know how to navigate through the labyrinth Wiki systems (I used to be able to try to move articles etc. but don’t know anymore), thanks in advance for any help. Frenchmalawi (talk) 23:33, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the disambiguation assist!

Just wanted to drop you a note of thanks for fixing my erroneous link to "cohort" instead of "cohort (military unit)". I apologize for making the same mistake in several articles—when I noticed it the first time, I wasn't sure how many articles I might have made it in, and didn't take the time to go back through them all and look. So I really appreciate your fixing it for me! P Aculeius (talk) 14:14, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Convergence (mirror)

Hi RodW,

I noticed your edits to the mirror article, and thought maybe I could help. While we don't have an article about the convergence of light, the term is most closely related to divergence, although in fact is the opposite of that term, they are both two sides of the same coin. The closest article we would have is either divergence or better is probably beam divergence. Simply put, convergence is what happens to light rays when it is focused to a spot, while divergence is what happens after it is focused and begins spreading out again. Divergence is the term most commonly used to describe the phenomenon of beam (or rays of light) spreading. Convergence is more rarely used, but only applies to focusing. Together, however, they both really refer to the same thing, so divergence is almost always used, and convergence only when there is a need to distinguish between focusing and spreading. Personally, I would probably link that to beam divergence, as that is more closely related, but then we'd need to add the term to that article somewhere explaining how they relate. I hope that helps. Zaereth (talk) 17:17, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Oh, by the way, just FYI, I created the redirects Convergence (optics) and Divergence (optics) and added them to the DAB pages, so maybe this won't be so hard to find in the future. I've never heard it called simply "vergence", but it makes sense. Most sources simply default to "divergence", I guess because that's how either will eventually end up, the only difference is what side of the focal plane it's on. Sometimes there's a need to distinguish between them physically, but mathematically the only difference is the sign (+ or -). Hopefully, a couple redirects will help. Thanks again Rod. Malta Jazz Festival

Thanks for highlighting the disambiguation issues on the Malta Jazz Festival page. I have directed the links to the correct wiki page for three of the four you highlighted but for the fourth, Robin Jones, there is strangely no page on wikipedia, despite undoubted notability given his contribution to the British jazz scene. Maybe I can start one on another day. But thanks for your help. It is good to get some genuine collegial support after so many bruising run-ins from overly proprietorial, delete-happy editors. Some of them lack some of the finer social skills. Kont Dracula (talk) 23:37, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

help related to DisamAssisit

Dear user, I have noticed that you fix several disambiguation with the mentioned tool. though I have added the following code

{{subst:iusc|User:Qwertyytrewqqwerty/DisamAssist.js}}

but it's still not showing on my page's vector bar. Can you help me out in this issue?

Thank You ImSonyR9 (talk · contribs)

You can find it here -->Special:MyPage/common.js
I know that along the top right corner on "more" tab I can find it. But when I have pasted this code to my common.js page, it;s not working. I mean on the "more" tab, DisamAssist is not appearing. I have refreshed multiple times, bu not working.
{{subst:iusc|User:Qwertyytrewqqwerty/DisamAssist.js}}

So, I just wanted to know, did you pasted the above link just as it is above, or you have changed the

User:Qwertyytrewqqwerty

and added your user name?

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Rodw, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

telegram disambiguation

I just reverted your edit at electrical telegraphy but now notice you have done a very large number of similar edits. I'm going to ask you to self-revert all of those. I realise you were just trying to resolve links to a disambiguation page, but the problem was caused by an ill-conceived retargeting of telegram to the dab page. Telegram is a viable standalone article and it is much more useful to let the links continue to go through the redirect. It really was a bad idea to act on that so quickly. SpinningSpark 16:23, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

I believe I have now self reverted all those which have not subsequently been edited by you or others.Give me a shout if I have missed any.— Rod talk 17:02, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
You got all the ones on my watchlist, but how many did you miss out? I saw one or two get reverted by others, but if there are more than that and the subsequent edits are unrelated then they still need undoing. Can you identify which ones you missed? SpinningSpark 17:09, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
I've done all those on my contributions list which had a rollback option. There were only 2 or 3 where this wasn't anoption so I assume they are the ones you or others had already edited. The dab list currently shows 474 articles (the top of the list) which links to the dab page (see https://dplbot.toolforge.org/dab_fix_list.php?title=Telegram_%28disambiguation%29 ) but it will be a few hours before this updates again - I will check again after the update.— Rod talk 17:14, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
The lists have updated and all appear to have been caught.— Rod talk 06:49, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
Just a tip for future use, whenever I need to do a mass rollback of a user's edits (something I frequently need to do as an administrator), any that aren't the most recent edit I open in another tab to look at manually later. That way I don't lose track of which ones I skipped. SpinningSpark 10:20, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks I will try it if a similar situation arises in future.— Rod talk 10:21, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Performance Art Entry / Lolay1983

Can you please take a look at the performance art entry. I see you have edited it before and seem to be an impartial editor. Lolay1983 has simply rewritten the entire page to promote Abel Azcona, an artist with no known professional exhibitions. We cannot rewrite history at a time like this, it is too dangerous. Azcona should not be mentioned dozens of times throughout, and be the main image, as he is an artist who has so far, only exhibited on instagram. If you look at Lolay1983's contributions, they are to only promote Azcona. Please help to stop this. Thank you.

WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  •   Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
  •   The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
  •   Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally,   MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Hello

Hello Rodw. In the course of clearing up Foo (disambiguation) redirects that target non-disambiguation pages, I occasionally find some created by you (see above). Typically the situation arises where you've correctly created an INTDAB link to, say, a short disambiguation page which has since been redirected itself to the primary topic with a hatnote. You've done nothing wrong, but Twinkle gives me the option to inform the page creator. I didn't want you to be overwhelmed with speedy deletion messages from me, clogging up your Talk page while you're on holiday :-) Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 16:52, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  •   Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  •  HaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  •   Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Speedy deletion nomination of Tropical cyclones in 2005 (disambiguation)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Tropical cyclones in 2005 (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Thank you Comment

I am still pretty new to editing on Wikipedia. so thank you for helping me learn with your corrections of two wikilinks for Doves albums. Why do The Last Broadcast and Lost Souls have '(Doves album)' or '(album)' in their article titles, whereas Some Cities, Kingdom of Rust, and The Universal Want do not? Either way, I should have checked the album articles before publishing. Also, I'd love to know how you found these errors, or maybe you're a Doves fan too? Thank you for your time! WikiCup 2020 November newsletter

The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new Champion is   Lee Vilenski (submissions), the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by   Gog the Mild (submissions). In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points.   The Rambling Man (submissions) was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with   Epicgenius (submissions) close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.

The other finalists were   Hog Farm (submissions),   HaEr48 (submissions),   Harrias (submissions) and   Bloom6132 (submissions). The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2021 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hello Rodw! Thank you for adding the 'disambiguation needed' tags on some of the links. I was wondering how this should be resolved? For example, the disambiguation page I see a suitable tag such as 'Immobilisation (healing)' but the page doesn't exist yet. Robert Ainslie (lawyer)

Rodw, Many thanks for your tidying up of my article. I have noticed that a short article on the same person already exists. Usually I would just replace the article and leave a note that I had expanded the article, however the author has named it 'Robert Ainslie (writer)' which I feel does not fit or is ambiguous to most folk if by writer the author meant lawyer, which seems unlikely, although Robert was a Writer (lawyer) to the Signet and much of his life and relationship circulates around his professional work. He published two religious texts. Can you advise a solution to this? Many thanks -- Rosser Gruffydd 10:48, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Rodw,

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

St Mary of the Angels Church, Brownshill

Morning Rod,

You don’t happen to have a picture of the above by any chance? I can’t find it on Commons, or on Geograph, or indeed anywhere with the right licence to upload it to Wikipedia. It looks like this, [1]. It’s currently a rather irritating gap in the Friends of Friendless Churches list, and it would be good to fill it with an image. All the best. Corrie - disambiguation needed

Hi Rodw Yes! It surprises me that corrie as a landform does not have an article. I could redirect to cirque but given that strath and [glen]] are both possessed of their own article, I think corrie ought to have its own, there being many more such examples in Scotland than of the other two. Oneupsmanship: This painting turned the friendly rivalry between Edward Redfield and Elmer Schofield into
a feud. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania,
and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury
for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the
River
was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old
Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it
in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that it was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard!

Featured topic description

Hi Rodw, I hope this note finds you well. I am trying to standardize some of the Featured topics, by getting them all topic descriptions, akin to the one for 1880 United States presidential election. As the nominator and main contributor, I'm wondering if you would be willing to write something short for Wikipedia:Featured topics/Grade I listed buildings in Somerset? It doesn't need to be anything long or referenced, as the example above shows, so hopefully this wouldn't be too big of a hassle. Regards - Aza24 (talk) 04:03, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

A mystery church ... do you recognise it?

Happy New Year Rod! I know you're no longer in the area, but I'm hoping for a bit of Somerset local knowledge if that's OK. Do you happen to know where this might be, and what the church is? — [2] I've just uploaded this photo temporarily to my FlickR account. Unfortunately I didn't tag/name the photos at the time, and this one is 14 years ago (!). Some details to narrow it down a bit are in the accompanying text. It would be nice to upload it to Commons (and add it to my list of churches photographed) if it can be identified. Cheers, Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 12:43, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

First, thank you for your work. Cyrtandra links to a disambiguation page that includes Cyrtandra (plant) and Cyrtandra (moth). Cyrtandra (moth) is now Avittonia. Is it easy to simplify this to Cyrtandra just leading to the plant genus, and getting rid of "(plant)"? Brunswicknic (talk) 11:23, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the message. I note there is a redirect from Cyrtandra (moth) to Avittonia so readers should end up at the right article. I have added a note on the dab page Cyrtandra to help those disambiguating, but it is probably still useful to have both entries on that page in case other editors link to the old term.— Rod talk 11:34, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Moving "Tatort: Es lebe der Tod" to "Long Live Death (2016 film)" does not work?

Hello Rodw, perhaps you could help me further. Using the Move function (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MovePage/Tatort:_Es_lebe_der_Tod), I unfortunately cannot move the article "Tatort: Es lebe der Tod" to "Long Live Death (2016 film)", but this is the correct international/english title for the film. With best regards from Germany,--FilmMusikUndAnderes (talk) 17:06, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

There appears to be a redirect at Long Live Death (2016 film) to Tatort: Es lebe der Tod. I think this would need to be deleted before the move so may need an admin to do this, so I'm afarid I can't help.— Rod talk 17:15, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
See Wikipedia:Moving a page and specifically Wikipedia:Moving a page#Moving over a redirect which says you may need to use Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests.— Rod talk 17:22, 3 February 2021 (UTC)
Good evening Rod, thanks for your help. Then I will do it that way.Best regards,--FilmMusikUndAnderes (talk) 20:31, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Piping dablinks

Hi. Thanks for helping check the incoming links for Thai royal and noble titles. However, most of them should not have been piped. For example, Special:Diff/1005966798 was an index page and the entire link should simply have been replaced. The same goes with links appearing in See also sections. I'm not familiar with the DisamAssist tool; does it not allow replacing of text? Maybe this is a feature that should be requested. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:24, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Paul, Without knowing the specialist topic and context it is sometimes difficult to know whether the existing text should be replaced with the new article title & the objective is to help the reader get to the right article for more information on that topic - therefore I rarely replace the original text.— Rod talk 12:27, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Fair enough, but I don't recall seeing a case where it's appropriate to pipe links in the See also section. Those at least should be fine to replace. (I thought the MOS had some guidance to that effect, but either I'm remembering incorrectly or I'm looking in the wrong place.) --Paul_012 (talk) 12:41, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

FIDE

Hi Rodw,

My name is David Llada (david.llada@fide.com), I am the official spokesperson for FIDE. So, I am a valid source I guess :-)

"International Chess Federation" is the official name of our organization, as you can see on our website: https://fide.com

This name is registered in the new FIDE Charter that was approved in February, 2020, and effective from March 1, 2020: https://handbook.fide.com/

It is true that both "World" and "International" are mentioned in the charter. In the past, both traductions have been used indistinctly. However, since 2018, a deliberate effort has been done to put an end to this ambiguity. Now we use exclusively "international".

I hope that helps to sort this out once and for all!

Thanks, David — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davidllada (talkcontribs) 12:58, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

I don't understand the significance of your comment. The only edit I have made to FIDE is to disambiguate Grandmaster to Grandmaster (chess) and have not been involved in any naming disputes.— Rod talk 13:29, 9 February 2021 (UTC)

Village vs. town

If you don't know the difference between a village and a town in Wisconsin, you shouldn't be making these kinds of edits: [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10]. 32.218.107.249 (talk) 14:59, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. When the dab page says "a village within the town" and we are talking about radio stations etc it seems reasonable to use the town rather than the village, but thanks for correcting them.— Rod talk 16:33, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
I can see the misunderstanding, but if it says "a village within the town", it's in error. Villages and towns are independent of each other. Villages are surrounded by towns, but not in them (at least in Wisconsin). Hope that makes sense. 32.218.107.249 (talk) 17:31, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Perhaps you could go to Trempealeau, Wisconsin and edit it with more useful definitions to make the difference clear.— Rod talk 17:34, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Do you fancy looking a Ettrick, Wisconsin as well which is similar?— Rod talk 17:37, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, and done. There are dozens of these. I fix them when I encounter them. 32.218.107.249 (talk) 17:56, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks I can see you have clarified this on the town and village articles but I don't see any changes on the disabiguation pages themselves (Trempealeau, Wisconsin & Ettrick, Wisconsin) which are used by me and others to try to resolve the links within articles which point to the disambiguation pages (eg see the list of Ettrick related articles which point to the disambiguation page).— Rod talk 20:48, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for doing those as well. Would you fancy taking a look at some others - and the dab links to them:

Thanks.— Rod talk 16:53, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Macedonia (region)

[11]. If it isn't someone born in the first century BC, they have probably never regarded Macedonia as a "region". If Macedonia appears in someone's infobox, it is almost definitely the country, Macedonia (country). (The title redirects to "North Macedonia".) --Moscow Connection (talk) 23:45, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

Actually, I've seem some Greek editors changing "Macedonia" to "North Macedonia" everywhere en masse, so it is unlikely that many such links are left. The one in "Barbara Popović" was added by a Macedonian person just a few days ago. (I agree with his edit. The country was called Macedonia in 2000 when the singer was born.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 23:58, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

North Macedonia has only existed since 2019 & before that was Macedonia since 1991, so I tend to use Macedonia (region) before that to avoid confusion with Macedonia (ancient kingdom) and Macedonia (Greece), but I am happy to be corrected if I get it wrong.— Rod talk 08:49, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

David Ray

Why did you add a red link to David Ray?
Vmavanti (talk) 20:30, 19 February 2021 (UTC)

On Template:Arkansas House of Representatives there were multiple names pointing to disambiguation pages. We do not seem to have an article about the Arkansas politician so it pointed to David Ray a dab page. I had previously disambiguated Mark Perry (politician) and Andrew Collins (politician) and User:Narky Blert had added a red link to John Milligan (Arkansas politician). It is likely (hopefully) that articles will be created for them in the future.— Rod talk 21:36, 19 February 2021 (UTC)
I was under the impression we weren't allowed to do that on DAB pages.
Vmavanti (talk) 04:03, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
@Vmavanti: Both black- and redlinks are allowed on DAB pages if they satisfy WP:DABMENTION. I cheerfully and ruthlessly delete orphan redlinks from DAB pages, but make an exception if they're redlinked somewhere else and there's a prima facie case of notability, even if there's no good bluelink for the DAB page; elected legislators are an example. I also make an exception if there's an article in a non-English WP, and may add a {{ill}} link. Narky Blert (talk) 06:21, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
OK.

Middelburg

Hey Rodw, just a heads up about the dablinks to the recently-dabified Middelburg. The bunch of links you fixed in between (and including) this edit and this edit should all direct to Middelburg, Netherlands (which is a provincial capital and historically important city, as well as the article that was until today located at Middelburg) and definitely not to Middelburg, South Holland (which is a tiny hamlet of no importance). I've already fixed these, but keep in mind that next time you encounter a link to Middelburg (there's plenty of them left), you can be 99.9% sure it's Middelburg, Netherlands (except if it's one of the Middelburgs in South Africa, of course). Other than that - keep up the great work! Lennart97 (talk) 00:02, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. I found this due to Template:Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta where the entries either side of Middlleburg ie Spijkenisse and Vlaardingen and both in South Holland. Thanks for fixing & happy to leave the others to you.— Rod talk 08:36, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Dablinks and vandalism

Hi Rodw, sorry to bother you again. I came across the dablink-tags at Survivor Series (2017) and noticed that you had fixed some of them with this edit. I checked the article history, however, and saw that the preceding two edits had changed a bunch of wrestler names, all to wrestlers who were long dead by 2017, including the ones you did disambiguate. If you had managed to disambiguate all of them, this vandalism probably would have gone unnoticed for a long time. So try to stay vigilant :) Lennart97 (talk) 15:41, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

Well spotted.— Rod talk 15:50, 27 February 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 March newsletter

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
  •   Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
  •   Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
  •   Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
  •   The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
  •   Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
  •   Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
  •   Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
  •   Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! My revert at Bids to college bowl games

Hello. Over the last day and a half, 70.121.105.31 (talk · contribs) has been making sabotage-like edits to scores and records of college football related articles. During my mass revert of those edits, I reverted one of your edits. I then went back intending to fix the "friendly fire" when I noticed your edit included adding links to Cotton Bowl Classic twice within the same section. So when I fixed it, I chose to include just the one link.

A minor, isolated case of overlink is not something I would ever quibble over. If you wanted it that way, you can change it without any objection from me. I only dropped by clarification and transparency purposes. Thank you and have a great day. --DB1729 (talk) 16:03, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks - a single link is fine (and what there should be) the links probably came up in two different windows when I was disambiguating so I may not have noticed they were both in the body of the article rather than one in the lead & one in the body which is OK.— Rod talk 16:14, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

Spotting dab links (before you need to fix them)

I can't thank you enough for all of the times that you've corrected links that I added that needed to be disambiguated. I recently created an article and a template each with more than 100 links each and made my best effort to fix broken links and those requiring disambiguation. Broken links are easy, as they show up in red. But is there any way to see which links are to dab pages without hovering over each link, one by one. Alansohn (talk) 12:48, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

If you go to your preferences & then the "Gadgets" tab, you need to scroll down to "Appearance" & tick the button next to "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange". Any links to dab pages will then show up with a yellow highlight (you may need to refresh to see them). I have been arguing for this to be turned on as a default for ages - but not liked by many. For lots more hints & tips see Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links & you could always help us with tackling lists like Disambiguation pages with links.— Rod talk 12:54, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

Copyright problems

Grüß Gott. The participants of CCI recently discovered some old copyright violations in a few of your Good and Featured Articles. I don't want to lecture you on copyright policy or standard editing procedures, but this has to be brought up. It is unacceptable to have copyvios in any article, let alone quality content. So, we thought you should know about our discovery so we can work together to address it. The effected articles we looked at are River Tone (Edit from 10 June 2015), Chew Valley Lake (Edits from 30 October 2004 and 24 January 2006), Mendip Hills (Edits from 16 July 2006 and 28 October 2006), River Parrett (Edit from 2 December 2008), River Avon, Bristol (Edit from 8 December 2009), and Kennet and Avon Canal (Edit from 11 June 2011). –♠Vami_IV†♠ 23:43, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. Could you be specific about what you consider to be copyright violations. I have looked at the River Tone (Edit from 10 June 2015) (the most recent issue you highlighted) and see that multiple sources are used - mostly for one or two sentences each. Several of these are now deadlinks (which need sorting) so I can't sheck what the source said and how close the text is to the orginal. If the suspected copyright violations are things like species names I would suggest that there is no other way to present the information. As some of these edits are from 15 years ago it is also possible that text was copied from wikipedia into the other sources, but without more details of the text you are referring to it is impossible to check.— Rod talk 07:15, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
I am happy to supply examples. The violations we discovered are copy-pasting (copypasta) and close paraphrasing. Below, I've reproduced examples of your prose, with the offending text bolded.
From River Parrett: Southlake Moor is another SSSI, forms part of an extensive grazing marsh and ditch system. When conditions in the River Parrett are suitable, the moor can be deliberately flooded in winter by opening a sluice in the river's floodbank. Some 96 species of aquatic and bankside vascular plant species have been recorded on Southlake Moor, including the greater water-parsnip (Sium latifolium). When the moor is flooded it can be occupied by large numbers of wildfowl; up to 22,000 wigeon (Anas penelope), 250 Bewick's swan (Cygnus bewickii) and good numbers of pochard (Aythya ferina), teal (Anas crecca) and tufted duck (Aythya fuligula). Signs of European otters (Lutra lutra) are regularly seen on the muddy banks of the River Parrett. The ditches on the east side of the site are populated by palmate newts (Triturus helveticus).
Copypasta and close paraphrasing from the attached source (Citation 189), a PDF file you added in 2015: Southland Moor forms part of the extensive grazing marsh and ditch system of the Somerset Levels and Moors. [...] Southlake Moor is unusual in that, when conditions in the River Parrett are suitable, it may be deliberately flooded in winter by means of a sluice in the river floodbank. [...] Some 96 species of aquatic and bankside vascular plant species have been recorded from Southlake Moor. [...] When the moor is flooded, large numbers of wildfowl may be present; with up to 22,000 Wigeon Anas penelope, 250 Bewick's Swan Cygnus bewickii and good numbers of Pochard Aythya ferina, Teal Anas crecca and Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula. [...] Regular signs of the Otter Lutra lutra are to be seen on the muddy banks of the River Parrett. The ditches on the east side of the site contain a population of the Palmate Newt Triturus helveticus.
It should be noted now that, because this is a PDF, it is impossible for Earwig's Copyvio Detector to read it. The CCI volunteer who detected this had to manually inspect the PDF. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 01:52, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
Remarkably that paragraph had remained largely unchanged for the last 13 years. I have now reworded it, however I have left the species names and latin translations as there is really no other way to put these. Could you take another look and see if you think this is now different enough from the source? If you would like to provide other examples I will look at these as well.— Rod talk 08:31, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
I have also done some rewording on the ecology section of the River Tone article.— Rod talk 08:54, 12 April 2021 (UTC) and bits on Chew Valley Lake and Mendip Hills. I am having problems identifying the issue on River Avon, Bristol.— Rod talk 09:36, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

About sassaby

Hi there, thanks for your wikilinks corrections. You left a [disambiguation needed] tag at the word sassaby in the article Bangweulu tsessebe. I thought however, that the disambiguation page it links to is apt, the word applies to both taxa, and I wanted to highlight the ambiguity of the term, all 'sassaby' taxa are meant anyway in that sentence. Must all links go to a specific page? Regards, 86.83.56.115 (talk) 16:32, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

  •   The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
  •   Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  •   Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
  •   Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
  •   Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
  •   Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
  •   Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
  •   Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time).

If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi, I am Anthony Reddie. If you don't mind, I would like to suggest a few edits for my wikipedia entry (I am flattered that you have created a page for me).

1. My PhD was turned into a monograph, but that was my 2003 book 'Nobodies to Somebodies' - Epworth press, 2003. 2. My SCM Core Text: Black Theology in 2012, was the first Core text book to outline a pedagogical approach to Black theology focussed on Higher Education teaching and learning. 3. I am no longer a Trustee of BIAPT, but I am an Executive committee member of the Society for the Study of Theoogy (The SST) 4. I no longer serve as a Learning and Development Officer for the Methodist church. 5. I am an 'A Rated' Researcher for the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa; the first Black person to get this top rating in Theology and Religious Studies in the history of this evaluation process. This designation means that I am a Leading International Researcher.

I hope the above is OK. I would be grateful if you felt able to make these changes.

Thank you again for creating a wikipedia entry on me. Thank you.

Anthony — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.192.96.177 (talk) 20:23, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

I presume the article is Anthony G. Reddie. I didn't create the article (that was User:Calidachu), all I did was fix a disambiguation link. I would suggest going to the talk page of the article and putting your request there. — Rod talk 20:32, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi both, I will help amending those concerns. However, a wikipedia entry reflects what position you held in the past. So I will just put them in past tenses. Calidachutalk 09:53, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Gilwern

Hello. Thanks for the disambiguation of the Clydach Gorge link on the Jack Williams' VC page. I havent yet learned how to include a picture in an article. Would you please be willing to do so for me, on the Gilwern page ? Yesterday, I included on that page information about Gilwern's new bridge, on the same route as the Jack Williams' Bridge; it's the world's largest concrete-spanned bride, snd a striking public domain photo' should look great: there are many on Google from which to choose. Would you be willing, please ? Thanks. Heath St John (talk) 16:02, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Take a look at Help:Pictures. As well as the code you also need to be aware of copyright issues as many pictures you may find on google are not licenced for reuse. I presume the article is Gilwern. There are some photos of Gilwern on wiki commons] but am unsure which bridge you mean. Is it the one shown on this page? If so is the correct name "Jack Williams Gateway Bridge" completed in 2018? if so I will add some on commons and you can add them.— Rod talk 16:17, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
You also need to add a citation for the statistics about the bridge you have added to the article.— Rod talk 16:20, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
There are now three suitably licenced on commons for you to choose from:

If you have problems adding one of them let me know.— Rod talk 16:29, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello. Thanks very much, but... It's all rather intimidating, for a 'Picture Novice'. What I can ! do, I did teach myself, as I agree its the best way; the picture-ability shall take me a little longer, I'm sure. That's the 'Jack Williams' Gateway Bridge' you've found. The one on the same, rocky route that's so far into its sixth year of building, because of the terrain, is the Gilwern concrete-spanned one. It's easily found on google, using some-such combination of words; it looks entirely different; it crosses over a dual carriageway, and down the other side. Yes, I'm aware of the copyright question. I think it'll be quite some while before I even attempt it. In the meantime, whilst I'll still try to learn it, I hope these exchanges, or the presence, now, of its mention on the Gilwern page, shall encourage more skilful hands beforehand. Thanks very much, again. Heath St John (talk) 18:57, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

If you give a URL link to a pictue of the bridge you want I might know what I am looking for & be able to find something.— Rod talk 19:00, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Tremendous if we could collaborate ! I was hoping you or another should ! Here's one, I'm sure. Ad much as I'd like to use the better ones from the local papers, surely the ones on the UK Government websites are public domain ? So here it is:- www.gov.wales I've just typed the post's story title, below, 'NEWS STORY 5 things to know about section 2 of the Heads of the Valleys project ', and one's there. An aerial view, with the bridge in the middle. Here's a promise, I'll try to learn how to do it. If you could, it should look great. Here's hoping ! Thanks very much ! Heath St John (talk) 01:17, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. I now see which bridge it is at 51°49'24.1"N 3°05'36.5"W. I can not find any creative commons licenced images. Most government publications in the UK are not public domain (unlike the US) and nor are local papers (eg the image in the Abergavenny Chronicle). You culd ask at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wales if anyone local would be willing to go and take a photo and upload to commons.— Rod talk 06:50, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Hello. Ag well, I, we, tried. Thanks very much for looking. I'll keep my promise to try and teach myself. I just hope that before my creative industry yields results, somebody reading these shall be inspired enough to anticipate me. Again, thanks. Heath St John (talk) 21:56, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

I've also just posted that request on the wikiprojectwales page. Thanks; I didn't know about that forum before. Heath St John (talk) 22:07, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this).

I wanted to discuss how my wiki page features my termination and ignores the rest of my soccer career as a player and a coach. There are also a lot of factual errors in the text. How can I objectively make corrections and not have my 30 year successful career in soccer be punctuated by “terminated by Tulsa Roughnecks FC” all pro coaches get hired and fired- why does my page have to have such a negative spin? New Albion and Norman J. W. Thrower articles

Hello Rodw and thanks you for the attention you gave the article I recently created, Norman J. W. Thrower. I would like to make improvements to the [New Albion]] article to achieve FA status. It is currently GA. On the FAC talk page, I posted a request asking for a mentor which you can read HERE. So far, the response has been muted. There have been some editors who have given brief advice that has been very useful. Noticing your long list of FAs, I am wondering if you too might give a look at the article, and briefly give me your thoughts about the New Albion article stands and what I need to consider for improvement. Kind regards,Hu Nhu (talk) 18:57, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Using DisamAssist on vandalism from an IP

I just thought I should give you a heads up - you used DisamAssist to fix several links to disambiguation pages on List of 6teen episodes, but the edit that added these was clear vandalism and added a bunch of stuff about incest and rape to a list of episodes of a children's cartoon. Thanks for attempting to correct the flûte links on the list of ship launches in 1751. For info, what was meant was flûte (ship), the French spelling of fluyt. Have changed the links on the list. Mjroots (talk) 18:46, 30 July 2021 (UTC)

Article — Andrey Pushkarev (DJ) — Help request

Hi Rod,

You've left a "Help needed: Anatoli Ivanov" in the edit comments of the Andrey Pushkarev (DJ) page.

I’d gladly help if you could be more specific, please?

--Anatoly IVANOV (talk) 19:34, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. There is a wikilink to Anatoli Ivanov, however ths links to a disambiguation page with 8 people of that name. I could not see which one is the "Geneva-based photographer and film director" to make the link more specific. If you know which article it should be you could pipe the link. Noting your username - if this is you, be aware of the potential Conflict of interestRod talk 20:38, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
Understood, thanks. Well, as you have already stated and I agree, to make the link more specific, we would need to create a dedicated page along the lines of Anatoly IVANOV (artist) (right now the last person on the Anatoli Ivanov disambiguation page, but, yes, that is indeed myself, so that would definetely be a Conflict of interest… so, maybe, if you woud like to create a stub, tentatively? There’s close to 25 years of artistic work, including IMDb and Taschen etc. publications as references? I’m rather uneasy about self-aggrandizing on Wikipedia, but would be OK to help in some way, especially taking into account the initial article isn’t precisely your main area of interest, if I read that correctly from your user page. Just brainstorming this live, open to any other ideas. :D --Anatoly IVANOV (talk) 23:07, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Deprecated API queries

Hey!

It seems your account (or more likely, some userscript you have installed) is doing quite a lot of API queries for the deprecated intoken like action=query&prop=info&intoken.

Would be appreciated if you could help find out what, and update it, in support of phab:T286548.

Thanks!

Reedy (talk) 17:06, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

I don't really understand the phab list & don't see my username on it. Any clues as to what gadget or possibly something on my common.js which might be causing it?— Rod talk 17:14, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
Bah, my fault, sorry. I meant to link to phab:T280806, and more specifically phab:T286551. The only gadget on enwiki that was doing that query was MediaWiki:Gadget-commentr.js, but I've fixed it.
But based on Special:PrefixIndex/User:Rodw, it could be any of the scripts included from User:Rodw/common.js and also User:Rodw/vector.js or User:Rodw/monobook.js depending on which skin you're using. Looking at the current logs, you've done just over 4000 queries in the last 12 hours. Which puts you second behind Krdbot with over 80K.
I'll have a dig through some of them and see if I can help identify the potential cause. Reedy (talk) 19:57, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I have added so many gadgets & scripts over the last 16 years that I have no idea what is causing it (and have forgotten what some of them do).— Rod talk 20:03, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
Don't suppose you have/had HotCat enabled? I've just fixed an issue on the commons version, which enwiki loads... Reedy (talk) 21:32, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
I've just deleted your vector.js and monobook.js, they're both dupes of the common.js. And common.js had numerous dupes in itself, so I've trimmed that down too... Reedy (talk) 23:19, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
And now removed numerous entries that don't load anything anymore, and updated some redirects... Found two that need fixing Reedy (WMF) (talk) 23:31, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
User:Kephir/gadgets/rater.js and User:Equazcion/OneClickArchiver.js fixed... Possibly done? Reedy (WMF) (talk) 23:38, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I do have HotCat - do you need me to turn that off (if so how?). Can you monitor whether tha changes you have made reduce the number of queries over the next day or two (I don't know how to do that)?— Rod talk 06:57, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
Nope, you don't need to turn off HotCat. I just noticed it was a common one that *might* have been the cause; but then I also found a couple more. I'm just paying attention to the users that (for no fault of their own) are doing more deprecated queries than everyone else. Thanks again! Reedy (talk) 12:20, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

I occasionally get a pop-up saying: "Requested data is not currently available in WikiWho database. It will be available soon." I don't know what is generating this but could this be the source of the problem?— Rod talk 15:52, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Thank you

I keep seeing your name as the repairer of my ambiguous links. (I do try to get these things right, but clearly fail from time to time.) I can only applaud your diligence in what seems to me a thankless task, and so I'm making it one degree less thankless by thanking you. Tim riley talk 17:42, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

A new fix for those using visual editor to reduce these is coming, but whatever editing tools you use you can go to your preferences -> gadgets & tick "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange" to show you when you are linking to a dab page.
