Today I added a few lines about the bitter 1873 coal miners' strike in my home state of Ohio. I put the lines under the 1870

heading. I edited your page because it was one of the few that took in the history of union organizing in the mines.

The last discussion of the 1873 labor action was in 1951, in the Youngstown Vindicator. I thought it was time to again reveal this history.

West Somerset Mineral Railway

I have left some comments on the WSMR page, but one or two points are better said here, I think.

First, you are being very courteous, and I am grateful. This is a quality not often found on Wikipedia.

Second, in carefully seeking comments and support from anyone and everyone, I appreciate that you are anxious to create support for the GA status. If there is a negative to this, it is that you may get several suggested (but as yet non-specific) changes at the same time as you are asking people to support the final result of implementing them -- which they can't see yet, of course. My own inclination would have been to make the edits now and then say to everyone "Is this ok?" (I was temped myself to wade in myself and make some edits now. However I defer to you as you have done much more recent work than I have on the page.)

You commented at one point that you didn't know how to edit standard bibliography items such as Griffiths, Roger; Smith, Paul (1999). The Directory of British Engine Sheds and Principal Locomotive Servicing Points: 1 Southern England, the Midlands, East Anglia and Wales. OPC Railprint. ISBN 978-0-86093-542-1. OCLC 59458015. and Butt, R. V. J. (October 1995). The Directory of Railway Stations: details every public and private passenger station, halt, platform and stopping place, past and present (1st ed.). Sparkford: Patrick Stephens Ltd. ISBN 978-1-85260-508-7. OCLC 60251199. OL 11956311M.. They are both templates (the curly brackets suggest this). You can edit them by keying in template:Griffiths-Sheds1 at top right of screen, then hitting the edit option, as you would for any article. You can then edit it at will. Just a word of caution, however, these templates are shortcuts for widely used standard works so people don't have to write out or copy and paste book data time and again and so Wikipedia moves towards standard refs. Therefore any change you make will immediately affect a lot of articles, not just one. In this case you could safely overwrite the ISBN number with the international version, then test it after you've saved it.

All that said, neither you nor I can edit Butt, R. V. J. (October 1995). I see that in Afterbrunel you've found a civil, constructive and specific guide. Well done, as he says, such people aren't as common in they should be in the Wikiworld.

Done. I see a critical obstacle to getting GA status, no author has used Jones' "The Brendon Hills Iron Mines and the West Somerset Railway". I've tried to get hold of a copy to no avail, until today, when it has become available on Amazon for £50 plus postage. I could go to York University Library to study a copy (I wonder if they'd let me in, I graduated there in 1971!) but its over the Pennines and would cost me £50 plus postage to get there and back and I'm not sure what I could do in a day. Don't spend your money on it or make a special trip. It's worth noting that Good article criteria do not require an article to be comprehensive. So although a missing source like that is detrimental to the article in general, and certainly to attaining FA status, it is unlikely to be a major stumbling block for GA. There are seven works which appear in the list of refs without page numbers, some with several instances. I have none of the works I'm afraid. I can't see any shortcut other than for people to wade through the works in question finding and recording the relevant pages. The works are Bodman 2012, Carter 1959, Mitchell & Smith 1990, Thomas 1966, Maggs 2013, Butt 1995 (I can go to Crosby library and look that up if no-one has easier access) and Bradshaw 2011. I don't have any of these either. The Maggs one is available full text on google books but appears to be an ebook without page numbers. I've got what are probably the three best known works on this (the two Sellicks, Madge and Jones). Jones though is such an epic tome that it tends to stop one from simply diving into the article, for the sheer scale of the topic. All I've managed to do as a result was to start identifying some of the background topics that need to be in place (hence the navbox). I've dealt with the Maggs ref by "splitting" it. The citation now links directly to the eBook extract, so if you read the relevant para on passenger trains and click on the Maggs ref it takes you to the extract itself. I've therefore taken the link to the eBook out of the bibliography, leaving is as a "pure" paper book, which I've moved to Further reading. I hope this makes sense! It deals with the non-existent ISBN, the confusion between paper and e source and the lack of page number. One down, umpteen to go! Rodw, I like your ASIN initiative, I've not seen that done before. You may have noticed the blue thingy at the bottom with all the associated articles or sections of articles such as mines and men. I can't see why Comebrow Incline is in there as it is in the WMR article, but not by name. I propose to change our section headed "The incline..." to "Comberow Incline" and add a note noting other names used such as "Brendon Hill Incline". A user searching for it will then find it, where s/he won't with the present arrangement. Is that OK by you? The other entity down there still in red is a bloke. Some of the relevant biographies: Sir John Lethbridge, 1st Baronet, Rice (or Rhys) Hopkins, George Wyndham, 4th Earl of Egremont, Walter Calverley Trevelyan, Spencer George Perceval, Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon, Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Baronet, Morgan Morgans (1816-1888). I had no hand in the tables of locos until this morning when I linked them to images. They may correspond to refs in the body of the text, but I haven't looked. I reckon Jones trumps anything unreferenced, so I support you making any changes. On the standard gauge locos table I can't find owt about the supposed Neilsen loco dating from 1861. If you and Jones can't I suggest you bin it. Your 2' gauge note about Sirdar seems fine, it doesn't contradict what's already there, in fact the £18 price tag confirms the accompanying narrative. I've put the spurious "link" to Brendon Hill station right, it was my typo, I keyed "sfn" instead of "rws". I warmly commend the NLoS maps to you, they enable you to look at a range of OS maps going back to the 1800s and switch between them and current images by sliding a blue blob at the bottom left corner of the screen. Glad to see your start on the mines article. One of us needs to add a section on Bearland Wood and add it to the route diagram. I volunteer to do both, but don't want to tread on your toes. In the light of what I've read in Jones and found through genealogical sources I need to revisit Morgan Morgans' bibliography. You said you weren't into doing them, so I volunteer; I've been pleasantly surprised how interesting it has been doing MM and will have a go at others, unless you want to. How do you suggest we divvy up the rest of what Jones reveals? I suggest selecting some chapters each is a clear way forward, but would welcome better ideas. I've had a fair old bash at West Somerset Mineral Railway and its constituent stations. I think WSMR needs a fresh pair of eyes as I suspect repetition has snuck in. I think there may be a case for an extra section on accidents. I also suspect it might be an idea to break sections up. I've spent so long looking at it I can no longer see the wood for the trees. Tomorrow is grandadding day, so later in the week I'll have a go at Mining on the Brendon Hills as Jones will help me flesh out some pits and add others. Finally (?) I'll have another go at Morgan Morgans' biography when his 3GtGrandaughter gets back to me with promised material. I've enjoyed it, but am getting stale. Thanks for all your brilliant work on this. I think it is looking a lot better. I've gone through & tweaked a few references & merged some one sentence paragraphs, but I don't think there is much more needed before a GA nomination. One thing that will annoy some reviewers are the references in the lead - although not "banned" some would argue that ever fact in the lead should be in the main body of the text, with citations there so do not need to be repeated in the lead. - might be worth checking?— Rod ^talk 21:36, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, I'm glad it's on the up. I'll check the lead and refs against the body of the article. One thing bewilders me in the talk page, how on earth can this article be said not have enough in-line citations?? Are ampersands in refs taboo? If so, I need to know as I routinely use lists like what I did at school, eg "pp. 3, 12, 33 & 47" on the same theme is "opposite p. 47" not needed for photos? Great if it is! Someone has commented adversly on the style of sources. I'd stand my ground on this, I think they are consistent and meticulous: author, title, year, publisher and ISBN, with twiddly bits such as edition and oclc as situations warrant. I don't think ampersands and opposite are banned in citations, but when using sfn they seem to give an error (one of the many tools I have installed, I can't remember which one, flags these as incorrectly formatted). Thank you, they look fine. I was told to use "loc" by my stalker quite some time ago, I suggest you have a look at your gadget. I've now "done" Jones. Doubtless I've missed things and misinterpreted things, but as far as I'm concerned I've done WSMR, Mining on... and MM's biography. If his descendants follow through as promised I may get some more stuff, but basically I'm done on these three articles. Clive Cowdrey on Clevedon

Thank you for the feedback Rod. Apologies for missing that out, I've known Clive since we were 11 years old - he was my closest friend throughout our years at Clevedon Comprehensive School and into early 20s, so I (wrongly) assumed, as a primary witness, that I could say he lived in Clevedon. Here are some citations (including an interview with Clive) that make it clear.

With regards to the "promotional language" many within the UK insurance / financial services industry recognise Clive for his innovative work and particularly for working out how to make the purchases of "Zombie Funds" within his company, Resolution PLC, that others had long tried and failed to work out.

As to his knighthood this was awarded for his "Services to children and social mobility"...

March 2017 WikiCup newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. It would have been 5 points, but when a late entrant was permitted to join the contest in February, a promise was made that his inclusion would not result in the exclusion of any other competitor. To achieve this, the six entrants that had the lowest positive score of 4 points have been added to the 64 people who otherwise would have qualified. As a result, some of the groups have nine contestants rather than eight. Our top four scorers in round 1 were:

• Cas Liber, last year's winner, led the field with two featured articles on birds and a total score of 674.
• Iry-Hor, a WikiCup newcomer, came next with a featured article, a good article and a tally of 282 bonus points for a score of 517. All these points came from the article Nyuserre Ini, an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh,
• 1989, another WikiCup newcomer, was in joint third place at 240. 1989 has claimed points for two featured lists and one good article relating to anime and comedy series, all of which were awarded bonus points.
• Peacemaker67 shared third place with five good articles and thirteen good article reviews, mostly on naval vessels. He is also new to the competition.

The largest number of DYKs have been submitted by Vivvt and The C of E, who each claimed for seven, and MBlaze Lightning achieved eight articles at ITN. Carbrera and Peacemaker67 each claimed for five GAs and Krishna Chaitanya Velaga was well out in front for GARs, having reviewed 32. No featured pictures, featured topics or good topics yet, but we have achieved three featured articles and a splendid total of fifty good articles.

So, on to the second round. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Thank you (and everyone else) for positive comments. I have never said that I want to be an admin and, as one contributor said, "consider whether you want the hassle". My previous thinking has always been that maybe after retirement from (paid) employment and I have a bit more time it might be something interesting to do. I think the most difficult question for me would be "What administrative work do you intend to take part in?" as most of the editing I do is content related rather than "back office" - I think my answers would be similar to Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Ealdgyth. Although I know they are important, I find it difficult to get motivated towards some of the functions. Yes it would be helpful, occasionally, to be able to move articles over redirects or similar functions but generally I can find a helpful admin if I run across issues I can't currently deal with.— Rod ^talk 14:14, 23 April 2017 (UTC)

I just looked at Ealdgyth's logs out of curiosity and they've yet to make a logged admin action, so it is possible to pass without having any 'need' for the tools. I suppose it doesn't do any harm to give competent and trustworthy people the tools even if they don't use them. You don't really have anything to lose by throwing your hat in—you'll almost certainly succeed—I just wonder if you have anything to gain. But it's up to you. May 2017 WikiCup newsletter

The second round of the competition has now closed, with just under 100 points being required to qualify for round 3. YellowEvan just scraped into the next round with 98 points but we have to say goodbye to the thirty or so competitors who didn't achieve this threshold; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Our top scorers in round 2 were:

• Cas Liber, led the field with five featured articles, four on birds and one on astronomy, and a total score of 2049, half of which came from bonus points.
• 1989 was in second place with 826 points, 466 of which were bonus points. 1989 has claimed points mostly relating to anime and Japanese-related articles.
• Peacemaker67 took third place with two FAs, one GA and seven GARs, mostly on naval vessels or military personnel, scoring 543 points.
• Other contestants who scored over 400 points were Freikorp, Carbrera, and Czar. Of course all these points are now wiped out and the 32 remaining contestants start again from zero in round 3.

Vivvt submitted the largest number of DYKs (30), and MBlaze Lightning achieved 13 articles at ITN. Carbrera claimed for 11 GAs and Argento Surfer performed the most GARs, having reviewed 11. So far we have achieved 38 featured articles and a splendid 132 good articles. Commendably, 279 GARs have been achieved so far, more than double the number of GAs.

Disambiguation (help needed)

Hi Rod,

Thanks for all the time you're putting in with cleaning up disambiguation links. I was a little concerned though about the possible overuse of Template:Disambiguation needed. As in the below example, you used it for 13 successive links over 11 articles in the space of two minutes. How much time are you actually putting in to find the correct link in each instance? For many of the examples, a read of the surrounding text should be enough to make a determination, even if you're not well versed in the subject area. Eg the date ranges are mentioned in Sports in New Orleans to be able to select the specific Negro Southern League being referred to. The link to Mars Hill is in reference to a trip to Greece and Franklin Academy is stated to be in North Carolina, for both of those there is only one link which meets that criteria. In cases where there are definitely no possible matches (eg CCSD, a Sudanese organisation), it may be better to de-link instead.

WikiCup 2017 July newsletter

The third round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 288 points being required to qualify for round 4. It was a hotly competitive round with all but four of the contestants exceeding the 106 points that was necessary to proceed to round 4 last year. Coemgenus and Freikorp tied on 288, and both have been allowed to proceed, so round 4 now has one pool of eight competitors and one of nine.

Round 3 saw the achievement of a 26-topic Featured topic by MPJ-DK as well as 5 featured lists and 13 featured articles. PanagiotisZois and SounderBruce achieved their first ever featured articles. Carbrera led the GA score with 10, Tachs achieved 17 DYKs and MBlaze Lightning 10 In the news items. There were 167 DYKs, 93 GARs and 82 GAs overall, this last figure being higher than the number of GAs in round 2, when twice as many people were taking part. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 4, we say goodbye to the fifteen or so competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. WikiCup 2017 September newsletter

Round 4 of the WikiCup has ended and we move forward into the final round. In round 4, a total of 12 FAs, 3 FLs, 44 GAs, 3 FLs, 79 DYKs, 1 ITN and 42 GARs was achieved, with no FPs or FTs this time. Congratulations to Peacemaker67 on the Royal Yugoslav Navy Good Topic of 36 items, and the 12 featured articles achieved by Cas Liber (5), Vanamonde93 (3), Peacemaker67 (2), Adityavagarwal (1) and 12george1 (1). With a FA scoring 200 points, and bonus points available on top of this, FAs are likely to feature heavily in the final round.
