The current Revolution at ITN edit

  The Current Events Barnstar
Here's a barnstar for Pharos for leading the current Revolution at ITN. I like the changes at WP:ITN/C and there are more new stuffs at {{In the news}} on MainPage these days! So things are indeed improving at ITN. Thank you and good luck. Happy editing! Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 18:59, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

NY/NYC Museums edit

Pharos, as we talked about on Sunday, here are the links:

Template talk:In the news edit

Can you please look into implementing the solution I suggested on the ITN talk page? I really don't see why the discussion couldn't be tied directly to the ITN/C page so that the watchlist would more accurately track discussion there. Just make the portal template show the portal items, while the formal nomination, wording, and discussion remains text on the page. I don't think there would be anything wrong with that. -- Grant.Alpaugh 17:29, 4 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey Pharos, I finally visualized what Grant was trying to describe at Template talk:In the news. He has a valid point about watchlisting ITN/C. The original design that you came up didn't require a bot because it was all hardcoded. However, since the most recent changes you implemented in response to feedback require bot maintenance anyway, I'm actually OK with Grant's proposal. We'd lose some of the integration with the portal, in particular the ability to watch new portal items being added and modified, while gaining watchlist functionality for ITN/C, as well getting rid of one transclusion a day. It seems like a decent trade. What do you think?
On a side note, I don't know if I've ever been this argumentative on the wiki. The amount of real world work I'm not getting done is astonishing. <sigh> - BanyanTree 03:34, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, what do you think of leaving ITN to its own devices and declaring victory? One would think that a rough doubling of the update rate would be a self-evident success, but it appears that too many editors are nursing wounded feelings over process issues. Not that it would have gotten to an implementation phase with a cadre of regulars that include one reincarnated indef blocked user; another who thinks ITN has a perfect structure, that it shouldn't have regular turnover, and any problems are all the admins' fault; and another who has stated that the role of ITN regulars is to complain until admins pay attention. Nevertheless, they still got their egos bruised, maybe particularly because they were looking for an excuse to accuse admins of something in the first place. I feel satisfied that I've given 100% in creating a working structure, and would prefer to walk away before I tire of responding, or counting to ten and not responding, to users who refuse to evaluate the trial as anything but a personality conflict. What do you think? - BanyanTree 15:47, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page I'm working on edit

I built the Gloria Yip article from scratch. It's been quite a challenge due to the languge barrier. It's easy to talk about her film roles because they're subtitled. I'm guessing it can never reach GA status without a picture, though. It would probably need someone who speaks Cantonese to make it better, and one of my sources is in an illegible text that I can't Babelfish, so I'm taking for granted what Chinese Wikipedia claims it says s true. I recently added all the Chinese titles of her films (except for the Japanese film, which IMDb doesn't even have in its Japanese title)--I'm not sure if I should have done that. --Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 14:57, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

ITN Russert Death edit

I think that the Russert item has enough support to go up, and it is of roughly the same international impact as the Iowa floods. Russert is the perfect example of a guy who was still at the top of his field (his show Meet the Press is the longest running show in the world and he held the moderator position longer than anyone else, MtP has lead in the ratings for the Sunday morning network talk shows by miles and for a long time, everyone respected him as a giant in the field) when they died unexpectedly if not spectacularly. He had conducted interviews with every major figure in American politics and many important leaders of other nations. I really don't understand how this doesn't qualify. -- Grant.Alpaugh 17:16, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I hope you don't mind me jumping in here. While I'm apparently more conservative than either you or Grant, I'm willing to sit back and see how things develop, and abide by any norm that develops. (The process-driven criterion I had drafted got thrown out the window, but whatever.) I think the most important development in that last interaction is that the posting admin felt comfortable referring to ITN/C as support in reverting the drive-by admin. That's precisely what should happen when ITN/C is an active forum, and I was delighted to see it. - BanyanTree 01:04, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have my conservative moments too, and was unsure for awhile. But certainly, I wouldn't remove it once it's up there, because it's within the bounds of reasonableness. And, honestly, part of me also smiles when I see we will not be setting another negative "precedent" today.--Pharos (talk) 01:33, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

In the article, there appears to be two three (forgot the gallery) sentences mentioning the event, and without a single ref...I'll try to improve it so it doesn't have to be removed. Cheers, SpencerT♦C 00:46, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Something that should interest you. edit

I was curious if you could work on one of your meets for a proposed idea of mine: Wikipedia:Wikimedia School Team. Basically, if you read it, you should get an idea what I am trying to tell. If it is possible, could we talk over about this?Mitch32(UP) 01:31, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Amarnath ITN edit

A land transfer agreement to the Amarnath shrine (pictured), sacred to Shiva in Hinduism, sparks violent protests in Srinagar and other parts of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

I'm suggesting this because the topic is the protests not Amarnath. So "violent protests" should be highlighted. --Emperor Genius (talk) 05:21, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I was wondering if... edit

You might use your gift for uncovering obscure sources to track down a name for me. I recently uncovered a humorous paper published in 1980 which plotted the various mass estimates for the planet beyond Neptune (eventually known as Pluto), and concluded that, at the rate its mass was decreasing it would soon disappear. But the article thew up a fact that completely floored me: the article claims to begin the graph with "the estimate by J. Babinel in 1848 that Pluto was 12 times the mass of the Earth." such an early reference to Planet X is noteworthy, but I cannot find any reference to anyone named Babinel making such a claim. If you might be able to track him down, I would be immensely grateful. Serendipodous 13:46, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Are we going to have a meetup in August? If so, let's try to schedule it soon so that people know about it and can come. --Mblumber (talk) 12:35, 28 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
