Peer review request for New York City edit

Hello Pharos - You've commented on the New York City article in the past, so you've been selected to participate in its peer review. The article has changed substantially since its last FA nomination. With some editing for concision (making the "skyline" section a daughter article on NYC architecture instead of including it in the main article, for instance), this article should be ready for featured status renomination. Your input would be much appreciated. Wv235 16:41, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

WS edit

Hi, Here is a vote related to Western Sahara. Neutrality of WP is dying, please save it! Daryou 07:48, 20 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia talk:Tomorrow's featured article edit

You recently posted some insecurity about featuring a "drinking" article, Cheers, on the main page for March 17 (Saint Patrick's Day). I've posted my reasoning there, if you wouldn't mind responding (I mean no offense by the nomination, I'm just trying to have a fun nomination that does hold true to reality). Chadian-Sudanese conflict edit

A long time ago you voted against moving the page to Chadian-Sudanese War. You might want to reconsider your vote, based on new information documented in the latest Human Rights Watch report on the situation. Yesterday French troops were deployed in Borota, Chad to fight Sudanese militias[1] and the Janjaweed, Sudanese military, and RDL rebels apparently worked together to "empty villages" in eastern Chad. At least over 1,000 people have died, and the conflict is definitely not over despite the signing of the Tripoli Accord. I am urging other users to do the same. KI 00:34, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Chatham Garden Theatre detective work edit

Pharos is hereby awarded this Barnstar for doing the necessary detective work to find out what exactly happened to the Chatham Garden Theatre. — BrianSmithson 01:26, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good work! Did you take those pictures, too? — BrianSmithson 01:26, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ha! "Excuse me, why are you photographing a federal prison?" "I'm a researcher trying to find the lost Chatham Street Theatre." Well, if you ever get the urge to do more detective work, similar pictures would help Bowery Theatre, Bowery Amphitheatre, Chatham Theatre, and Park Theatre (once that one gets written). — BrianSmithson 12:58, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Action on DYK medal edit

Hi, after lots of fits and starts, consensus has emerged that DYK medal is a good idea and a design is being voted on. As a person actively involved in prior discussions, you may want to join in there. TIA, --Gurubrahma 18:08, 3 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dutch elections edit

Thanks for adding the dutch flag to the Dutch municipal elections on the current events template on the main page. Nice touch. Even though I'm very bitter about the results of the elections, I'm glad that Wikipedia is one place where I can have a discussion where rhetoric doesn't have the overhand. Dutch politicians campaigning in Amsterdam are soooooooooooooooooooo tiring !! jacoplane 01:38, 8 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Park Theatre edit

Hey, Pharos. I just finished Park Theatre (Manhattan). If you get a chance, will you give it a look and make sure that I've gotten all of my geography correct? In particular, I'm not sure if I've got the direction of Bowling Green correct in relation to Park Row. Thanks, — BrianSmithson 21:42, 8 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Guantánamo/Guantanamo-related move/redirects edit

Greetings! I hope you're well. In light of prior discussion and to round out recent moves and redirects/DABs regarding Guantánamo/Guantanamo-related articles, I have proposed another move ... with a twist. Please weigh in, and thanks for your co-operation! E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 01:02, 15 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Poll on renaming article Jew to plural edit

Hi:

In looking back over the discussion at Talk:Jew I noticed that you had previously written about using the plural form "Jews" (or "Jewish people") for the article title. Someone recently added a poll on possible name change. Please take a look. I'm in support of the move for the sake of consistency with other "group" names, and have attempted to provide examples from List of ethnic groups; some have come out strongly against it. Perhaps you have a different take that would be appropriate, and might like to comment. Thanks —LeflymanTalk 19:08, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Protect the Template? edit

Perhaps you should protect {{Border-notinline}} since changes to that template can affect something on the main page and since there really is no reason for anyone to edit the template anyway. joturner 02:42, 8 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

ITN edit

I'd like you to show me one. CNN reporting "Details expected soon in Baghdad announcement." I will point out that I didn't consider putting it up til another news agency confirmed NBC News' original reports. Have faith, brother. --Golbez 07:36, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair enough, I think I remember the caught and released one. I was cognizant of this, which is why I waited until we had independent verification and a statement promised from the prime minister. :) Contrary to appearances, I did NOT act quickly and brashly. --Golbez 19:46, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

WP:ITN - Zarqawi edit

Okay, I didn't realize that the image I tried to use on ITN was fair use as I assumed it was taken from the FBI most wanted page. I compared the image available from the FBI with that from the Associated Press and found quite a few minor differences. I've uploaded the FBI image to Image:Alzarqawi3.jpeg. I believe this image to be public domain, and thus I don't believe there should be any problem displaying it on the main page. Just wanted to hear your thoughts. AmiDaniel (talk) 10:53, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, they're pretty clearly the same image. If you look carefully, one of them has just made a goof and flipped it. The thing is, we have to remember that neither the AP nor the FBI produced this image, nor own the copyright to it (it's probably from some Jordanian source). Just because it's on the FBI website doesn't make it a work of the U.S. federal government (and hence PD); indeed unless some wacky conspiracy has hidden Zarqawi's time in FBI custody there is absolutely no chance this photo could have been taken by a U.S. federal government employee.--Pharos 11:09, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Okay, well I wasn't too sure on it--the one image had an AP watermark and the other didn't, and I assumed that any image published on FBI most-wanted pages was PD. I'd really like to get an image of Zarqawi on the main page, as I think people can relate better to a face than a map, and I would love to find a PD image somewhere so we can do that. I discussed it on IRC before implementing, and some other admins didn't believe there was any problem using fair use images on the main page to illustrate the object in question. Apparently, they and I were wrong. Anyway, it's not that big of a deal, but I really would like to get a more familiar image up there. Copyright laws ... grrr. Thanks for your response and help. AmiDaniel (talk) 11:14, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Alright, let's give this one a try: Image:Photo608-1.jpg. Screenshot of a video released by the DoD, self-made by Zarqawi. Downloaded from Yahoo. I'm not entirely sure of the licensing on this, but I'm pretty sure it's PD in any case. Thoughts? AmiDaniel (talk) 12:00, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
