Anyone you know?

Hi, PMD. Long story short, User:PeterLerangis appears to be the subtle kind of vandal who deliberately introduces factual errors through small and inconspicuous changes to dates etc. Peter Lerangis is also a real person, so perhaps there's an opportunity to block on the basis of impersonation. But the reason I bring this up with you is that you're my go-to for WP:LTA info, so I thought I'd ask you if this behaviour resembles that of any of the usual suspects. Cheers! --RrburkeekrubrR 19:05, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Next September

The band Next September has recently been added to national circulation by Clear Channel Communications. According to Wikipedia's guidelines that is notable enough to warrant an article. So, may I ask why it was deleted? —Preceding unsigned comment added by ScreamingRage01 (talkcontribs) 02:39, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

No, that is not enough to make the band notable. Significant coverage is. More importantly, the article appears to be a copyright violation, taking soneone else's bio of Smashing Pumpkins and changing the names. So it has been tagged for redeletion. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 02:53, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Could you do me a mediation favour?

Hey. You seem to get on well with User:Collectonian which is why I'm coming to you. I got into a dispute today with Collectonian here and then here. It was entirely in good faith but I'm feeling that it's escalated past the point of reasonableness given how minor the original disagreement was, especially as I note Collectonian is feeling stressed by it. I don't think she'll ever be one of my favourite people but she's still a passionate and valuable Wikipedian and I want to close this off before it escalates further. Would you be able to step in in some way? I don't want the last word - if she wants to reply to my last comments I'm happy to not respond - I just want to be able to say, look, I just got a little unhappy over my experience here, I think what really bugged me was being accused of being part of some vast conspiracy against her, and I'm sure we're both going to go on to continue improving Wikipedia in our own different ways just fine. I don't, right now, know how to say that or communicate that without further inflaming things, which is why I'm turning to you. Could you help out at all, or direct me to someone better placed? - DustFormsWords (talk) 06:40, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for blocking the IP address 202.70.58.34 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log). Gerald Gonzales is from the Philippines and targets articles related to several Filipina actresses. Nonetheless, the vanda, his misinformation, and his consistent insistance on his unsourced "fantasy" edits are a very big pain the ass, if you excuse the clause. Question

Hi PMDrive, I'm kinda new to wikipedia but I'm getting the hang of it really fast. It's really awesome.. Um... anyways as I have been patrolling the Recent Changes, I see a lot of your edits blocking people and deleting pages. Are those admin-only edits like protecting a page? I'm clueless about Wiki's system so please bare with me.

Basically i'm asking if you can reverse the deletion made or in part made by this account?

I don't know much about Dark Soho except that they have 3 albums, 2 of which are still listed on Wikipedia.

They are:

"Combustion"

"Sun Spot"

"Light In The Dark"

Thanks for reading and i hope this isn't posted in a bad/wrong section.

Hi, Ivan. I can restore it, but it will need a lot of cleanup. As it stands, it is highly promotional in nature and unsuitable for inclusion because of that. What I'll do is to restore it to a user subpage: User:Ivan Pakšec/BICRO

Mentorship

PMDrive1061 -- You may recall inviting me here to feel free to ask anything.

1st try -- message was "genuinely puzzling" or too complicated

The topic needing resolution is something to do with organizing? or structural planning?

This is a draft effort to use graphics as a tool in crafting a non-verbose response to Carcharoth's diffs here and here.

Please help me improve this with constructive criticism. What I construe as Carcharoth's main points are highlighted in yellow.

I plan to post the following in an ArbCom thread. Can it be made clearer? shorter? better?

If you please, I hope you will help resolve this situation by making a thoughtful comment at active ArbCom thread.

Note: The text highlighted in beige is already posted in the thread.

Arbitrator views and discussion
  • I note the comments of a few of the editors approached to act as mentors. I would like to know (a) how you will address differences amongst yourselves (a situation we have encountered in other mentoring situations); (b) what range of actions you are willing to undertake as individuals and as a group; (c) how the "group" will work when Tenmei is also receiving private advice from individuals not specifically included in the group of mentors. In answer to the question above, Tenmei's six-month topic ban on the subject of Tang Dynasty begins once the mentorship is approved. Risker (talk) 05:24, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
  • This can't move forward until Risker's questions above are answered. Could a clerk please notify the editors who need to comment here. Thanks. Carcharoth (talk) 13:07, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
    • Tenmei, if you want DGG to comment here, by all means invite him to do so. As for your comments about "raising the bar", it is not unreasonable for us to ask the possible mentors to lay out here what they see as their role in all this. I count, so far, Doc James and Kraftlos (of those you list) and in addition to this, Nihonjoe and Coppertwig. The layout at User talk:Tenmei/Sub-page Alerts is impressive, but there needs to be some indication of how this will work, otherwise this risks becoming a time sink if it goes wrong. Carcharoth (talk) 19:54, 13 March 2010 (UTC)
      • Tenmei, I'm supportive of you resuming editing with mentors, but please be patient and wait for other arbitrators and those willing to mentor you to respond here. I realise it must be frustrating for you, but if you wait just a little bit longer and let others speak, then we may finally get something workable set up here. We want this to work, not collapse because it was not set up properly. Carcharoth (talk) 03:27, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Hypotheticals
In theory, it is not unreasonable to ask hypothetical questions; but in practice, the attempt can easily devolve into a time sink.

Illustrating the point with a timely issue: Is there a constructive value in examining failures attributable to ArbCom — serial incidents in which ArbCom snatched defeat from the jaws of victory?

Can you suggest a better way to solicit your help in a specific context? I have sent you an e-mail. --Tenmei (talk) 18:42, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Not sure what you're asking here

The situation you've outlined on my talk page is a bit out of my experience to say the least. I'm genuinely puzzled as to what you are asking of me. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 16:36, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

I think it is fair to say that we are trying to work through something which is outside anyone's experience. Your guess is as good as mine about what steps are constructive in a novel ArbCom thread, e.g.,
Context. As you know, I've created a mentoring group for myself because ArbCom feels it will be helpful. I provided the names of those who are to be "public mentors" (as described in WP:Mentorship). The mentoring group also encompasses other advisors — "non-public mentors" like you — who have agreed to participate on an intermittent or episodic basis. All are interested in mentoring as described in Wikipedia's article on Mentorship. In response to comments from Steve Smith, Coren, and Roger Davies, I summarized my best guesses about how this would work in practice.
A. ArbCom told me to locate a mentor or mentors.
Yes — I did just that.
B. ArbCom explained that Tenmei is "required to have one or more volunteer mentors, who will be asked to assist him in understanding and following policy and community practice to a sufficient level that additional sanctions will not be necessary."
Yes — the volunteers are ready to do just that.
C. However, Risker and Carcharoth effectively moved the goalposts or raised the bar by posing open-ended, unanswerable questions for the volunteer mentors to deal with. I responded to Carcharoth's diffs in an unconventional way. I tried to use page formatting techniques (a) to focus my comments and (b) to limit the number of words.
What you can do. There are a few specific things I hope you will consider doing:
1. Please comment on this evolving effort to use graphics as a tool. In your opinion, did this help me in crafting a non-verbose response to Carcharoth's main points? Can you suggest ways in which the formatting or the writing could have been made clearer? better?
2. Please help move the process forward by making a thoughtful comment at here. Perhaps you will have a better notion of what you might add if you read what others have posted here.
3. The fact that my message puzzled you is important. The main objective of mentoring is to reduce the number of ways in which my writing is construed as puzzling. Can you suggest how I could have re-written or re-conceptualized my sentences and paragraphs. Are there extra words you think I could have left out?
My goal was to make this as clear and as easy to deal with as possible; but obviously, my best efforts fell short. I'm sorry.
As a consequence of good mentoring, I hope to do better in the future.--Tenmei (talk) 18:24, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

You were puzzled by my initial message (which is now collapsed); and mentors offered suggestions about how I could have written differently:

  • diff "I would suggest writing shorter responses ... and just in general not try to summarize the entire situation ...." -- Kraftlos 19:39, 18 March 2010
  • diff "I am learning to give people what they ask for. If they want more info, they'll ask for it ... [which] would be better than being flooded with information that must be sorted through. --McDoobAU93 00:40, 19 March 2010

Let's pretend I didn't send the 1st try message. Instead, let's assume this 2nd try message is the beginning of an unanticipated new thread.

If you please, I want to ask for two things:

Advice. I want to ask for comments about the use of format as a device (a) to focus my comments and (b) to limit the number of words.
Action. will you post a comment at the active ArbCom thread about a mentoring group for me?

Thank you for your willingness to help me to re-think a style of communication which is a barrier to my working collaboratively with other people in our Wikipedia venue. --Tenmei (talk) 15:35, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Whacking with a wet trout or trouting is a common practice on Wikipedia when experienced editors slip up and make a silly mistake. It, along with sentencing to the village stocks, is used to resolve one-off instances of seemingly silly behavior amongst normally constructive community members, as opposed to long term patterns of disruptive edits, which earn warnings and blocks.

Example

Whack!
The above is a WikiTrout (Oncorhynchus macrowikipediensis), used to make subtle adjustments to the clue levels of experienced Wikipedians.
To whack a user with a wet trout, simply place {{trout}} on their talk page.

Hi,

I noticed on my watchlist that Dirichlet kernel was accidentally deleted and then restored by yourself (and then something similar happened with someone else). I'm rather confused by all of this, but the reason I'm writing to you is that there is an image that's now missing from the article that says it was deleted by you. If this was deleted by mistake, I'd be grateful if you would restore it. If not, and there was some reason, perhaps the redlinked image should be removed from the article.

Webelos Planet Deletion

Hello PMDrive1061 ! I must say my faith in the legitimacy of Wikipedia articles has grown exponentially through the course of this evening, seeing all the work of probably already a dozen editors like yourself. Anyway, as the subject line suggests, you deleted the article on Webelos Planet a short time ago, and I was wondering what paths we can take to bring in back, if not in another sort of way. I am short on time, so I hope you hear my case through a seperate post I made on the wall of another editor, one WooGee. It follows:

Hello Woogee! I understand that you've questioned the legitimacy of Webelos Planet as well as Cub World as unique articles worthy of being written in an online encyclopedia. For the record, this is the first time I've utilized user talk so I may have done this incorrectly. Assuming this all does post to your page correctly, I'd like to briefly state why these two pages are unique. First, Cub World, was a specific program utilized in only one camp in the world, and broke many of the norms of Cub Scout camping in an effort to reignite interest and provide new opportunities in camping. Indeed, the phrase "Cub World" is often used to describe the type of camps that include adventurous sites (like Camp Garrison of the Musser Scout Reservation) for scouts to play make-believe. As I'm sure you've read the Cub World page, you know that there are multiple new program ideas that were introduced within this new program, one of which led to the building of Webelos Planet, a distinct location in the world. While it may seem a bit extreme of a comparison, Webelos Planet is very similar to any tourist destination, and the page describes the many groundbreaking aspects of the program offered there. To be honest, I am very much vested in the preservation of the history and development of these camps, having served within the Cub World program and personally developing and building the infrastructure of Webelos Planet, so I hope you understand the, how do I say it... intensity, of my response. If you still find it appropriate to speedily delete this article, I would like to find an alternate path to keeping this bit of history alive. I appreciate your time, and will be trying to post this same response on the user talk pages of those who have discussed merging the articles with other sites. Thank you again, and excuse me if I don't respond immediately to your probably imminent response. Jackbauerisnotmydad (talk) 22:10, 28 March 2010 (EST)

Iyer the Great

Hi PMDrive1061, it seems you have speedily deleted a recently created article "Iyer the Great" using CSD-A3 criterion. If I remember correctly it was a valid film stub. I request you to kindly look into it. Salih (talk) 16:51, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

talk page lurker hereI had a look, there was a sentence identifying it as an Indian film, and a partial list of the cast. There was no discussion of the plot whatsoever and no references, although there was a link to the IMDB page of the film. I think you could go ahead and re-create it if you have some actual content to put in it, such as a brief description of the plot and any reviews it may have gotten. Some verification by a reliable source would help insure it was not speedied again. Beeblebrox (talk) 17:10, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
It's okay, if there was actually no content. I remembered it because I was the person who moved the article from "Iyer The Great" to the correct title "Iyer the Great". The movie was quite notable as can be seen here. Anyway, gone is gone, I don't want recreate it... Salih (talk) 17:40, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
Interestingly, the film won the National Film Award for best editing. Salih (talk) 18:01, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
If you don't mind, may I know who has created this article and who has tagged it for speedy deletion? Salih (talk) 15:15, 28 March 2010 (UTC)
I request you to kindly restore the article "Iyer the Great" as it was not a speedy candidate under A3 criterion. Salih (talk) 05:52, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
As you are aware the problem is now solved by User:Sreejithk2000. I felt little awkward for you not responding. No hard feeling. Thanks. Salih (talk) 11:24, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Interactome dynamics

Awarded to PMDrive 1061 for excellent taste in in-laws.

Ha, I was trying to be nice! Thanks, Drmies (talk) 03:19, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

  • Hey PM, in regards to User talk:Chocolate cake monster, I have this deja-vu feeling, that I've welcomed someone with a similar name before, an editor who also got indef-blocked immediately. Odd! I'm going to stop welcoming people. It's not as lethal as my nominations for administrator (whoever gets my nod is doomed, doomed!), but I don't feel good about it. Maybe it's time to stop and watch Alton Brown. Keep up the good work! Drmies (talk) 02:57, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
    • This is irritating. I went back to September 09 looking for "monster" but couldn't find a chocolate one. Oh well. AB is making gyros--very tasty! Gotta run too: black-eyed peas must be ready (Emeril's recipe). Take it easy! Note: a bit undersalted and overcooked, but not bad. Since you're such a good admin, I'm saving you the ham hock. Drmies (talk)

Sunuraju

I personally does not know him or have met him, but he is doing a good work by starting a lot of articles in Wiki. Its true that they have a lot of grammer mistakes and some of them fails notability, but I like his persistent spirit. I normally browse through his contributions and correct the mistakes as and when I can. He claims to have autism, so I feel it will not be nice to scare him off. --Sreejith K (talk) 16:04, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

My recommendation to you is to create a couple of sandbox files under your username that he can build the articles under. Then you can review, copyedit and source them. When they are ready for inclusion, you could aid him to move the file into the mainstream wiki. --Morenooso (talk) 16:07, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
BTW, I meant the subpages should be under Sreejithk2000 userpage as he should be the patron. --Morenooso (talk) 16:13, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
No offence to the poor child, but its tough to make him understand something. Many times I have told him to always sign my talk page when he edits it and also not to add content in between. See his talk page too. I can only wish that he will be willing to do what you suggested. --Sreejith K (talk) 16:18, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
The other thing you can do is twofold: if you notice one of his articles gets nominated and you think it has merit, place a note on the article talkpage asking the reviewing admin to move the deleted page to a subpage on your username. Then you can re-work it and have aid this editor in getting credit. --Morenooso (talk) 16:21, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Persistant vandalism by a banned user

Hi. You have just blocked a sockpuppet of banned user Gameboy1947 IE:- 119.152.80.116. He has now swapped to IP:- 119.152.84.123. This guy swaps IP's so fast its virtually impossible to keep up with him and revert his edits. However he is targetting the same articles. Can you semi protect these articles against anon editing for a month or so, which should curtail his activities for a while Helmand province campaign‎, Operation Panther's Claw‎, Kunduz Province Campaign‎, British Forces casualties in Afghanistan since 2001, Operation Strike of the Sword‎? Richard Harvey (talk) 16:59, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Many thanks! Though you have missed one, in the additional hassle from him:- Operation Strike of the Sword. Hopefully now I can have a quiet easter Monday! Richard Harvey (talk) 17:13, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

You have banned Gameboy1947 IE:- 119.152.80.116. The IP address beginning from 119.152.... belongs to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, which has millions of users. This has resulted in you inadvertantly banning people like myself who use PTA services. Now I have to log in to make an edit. Kindly sort it out. Poloplayers (talk) 11:54, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Your deletion of my just-created "SysadminsInFilm" page

Hi -

There is a professional association known as the "League of Professional System Administrators" (or [[2]]) which is devoted to promoting professional standards of conduct and technical best practices. Recently there has been an ongoing discussion about the increasing trend towards sysadmins getting credited in films. A great many names were mentioned and finally someone pointed out that there should be a Wikipedia page devoted to this topic. After all, if it weren't for sysadmins there wouldn't even be an Internet, much less a Wikipedia, and it stands to reason that anything that's good for sysadmins is good for the 'net. I realize that you thought I was creating a test page. In point of fact I was creating the skeleton for forwarding to the mailing list. As a sysadmin who has worked on a major film production I could have added myself but I felt that it would be less egotistical to wait until others from the mailing list had added names.

Please don't delete my page. I'm recreating it. I'm pretty sure that it will be fleshed out rather quickly.

Cheers!

Dorble.com

I just left this message on FatherGoose's talk page, and then realised I probably should have tapped you as the closing admin first. Short version is this page should be WP:SALTed but if we're going to do that we need to make sure proper procedure has been followed, and I'm concerned that your closure of the AfD on this was anything but. (I'm saying it's a good faith mistake, obviously. Normally you're right on the button about these things.) - DustFormsWords (talk) 08:03, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Khairul Anuar Baharom

About Sunuraju

I don't understand him either. But I have been nice to him so far since we don't have any writers who writes about Malayalam films. His contributions has always been sub standard, but he is the only one currently contributing in this category. This is my favorite category as well. I have been correcting his mistakes in every way I could. I feel sad for him about the blockage. I wonder whether this would help in any way. I will be more than glad if it does. --Sreejith K (talk) 16:21, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Since you are an admin, I thought of asking you a suggestion. How about putting an AFD tag on the articles he write and wait for a week to see if anyone can rewrite the page? I think 50-75 percent of his articles can be rescued that way. The reason I asked you this is because I am unable digest the possibility of him quitting wikipedia. --Sreejith K (talk) 05:54, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Regarding User:71.254.122.159

Was your block on User:71.254.122.159 only for this edit, or are they a reincarnation of a previous vandal?

You blocked them without a warning, and they only had two edits, one of which seemed legitimate. As you know, we usually warn users before blocking them, so I think an immediate block with no warning is quite harsh. It is my opinion that it is better for the project as a whole if we make an effort to educate users about policies, such as the policy against personal attacks, before blocking them.

I also see a potential conflict of interest here. Although you aren't engaged in a content dispute with them, "Administrators should...be aware of potential conflicts of interest involving pages...with which they are involved".

Thanks for your time, and I hope I'm not poking my nose where it doesn't belong. -Frazzydee| 03:11, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

I think blocking on sight for any length of time is too long. The blocking policy for personal attacks refers to "persistently making personal attacks". Similarly, Wikipedia:Blocking policy says "Repeated or egregious personal attacks may lead to blocks." The message doesn't appear to be egregious, nor was it repeated (yet).
So unless there is evidence that this is a reincarnation, making one personal attack does not seem to be in line with the blocking policy, as I understand it. -Frazzydee| 03:21, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick & courteous response. For posterity, the second quote I referred to was from Wikipedia:No personal attacks, not Wikipedia:Blocking policy as I incorrectly claimed. -Frazzydee| 03:36, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Seconded. You were making a remarkable leap of AGF, alas he was just yanking your chain after all, and perhaps there is some explanation behind his compulsion to vandalize. Thank you very much. Loved your wiki link, btw.  :) Given the fact that Jimbo took the time to e-mail me from a BlackBerry or laptop at an airport terminal within less than a day was pretty impressive; I think he's taking this one seriously. I'm no psychiatrist, but I have to tell you that I have never seen anyone as compulsive as this kid. He simply will not get the message and he seems to be convinced that he's right in editing the way he does when he clearly is not. He's broken every rule on this site and a few of "the behemoth's" TOS rules as well. I don't know what the dollar value is of all his vandalism, but he's taken up heaven only knows how much server space and volunteer time. PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:06, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

A question about Bambifan101

Hello PMDrive1061. I have been following a vandal the last couple of days whose edits were ringing a bell. Then I saw the AN discussion about BF101 and the ringing got a little louder. But my memory can play tricks so I thought that I would ask you a look at these two editors if you have the time. Today this IP Special:Contributions/74.199.1.111 made the same kind of annoying edits that this editor Special:Contributions/Jwelch5742 did the day before. They consist of changing run times on films and altering awards names etc - they especially like to hit Disney films. I could not remember if this was Bambifans MO or not. I thought that I would make you aware of my findings in case it is him. If this is just a run of the mill vandal I will simply keep an eye out for more and I will apologize for bothering you. Thank you for taking the time to read this. MarnetteD | Talk 03:57, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. Thanks also for the info about Alabama. I noticed that the 74.199 address was from Michigan and it was most likely Jwelch returning. It is valuable to know that we have a problem that maybe someone other than Bambifan. That way I won't waste my time making an erroneous sockpuppet report. Thanks again for your time. Historical Tweets

Hi there,

Hope you're doing well -- I had a question related to an article a fan of mine was trying to create... for Historical Tweets (a humor blog/book). I noticed that you deleted the entry yesterday on the basis of not enough information. I am told that the person was in the process of updating the page when you had deleted it.

I was hoping to get some advice from you in terms of how to get an article started on my blog & book, both of which have enough relevance to be included in Wikipedia: the blog has been written up by Time Magazine and CNN, and spawned a book to be published by Random House.

I would certainly start the article myself, but I realize it's frowned upon to do so.

Any advice on how to start an article without it getting immediately vetoed by editors like yourself?

Thanks for your guidance,

Alec —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alecmcnayr (talkcontribs) 16:42, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

The reason given(G8: Page dependent on a deleted or nonexistent page) is not a valid reason because the page Talk:Flowchart is a page and it has never been deleted. I created the currently deleted page to archive discussions from Talk:Flowchart, not vandalism. I was going to recreate it without saying anyhthing but that didn't seem like it would be a good thing to do. Sign My Guestbook! User:Sumsum2010 23:07, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

You deleted an article I had started about Marianne McAndrew. I recognize that the article there before was not sufficient, but I was planning on expanding upon it. I am creating a new article with more information and sources. If this still seems insuficient, please let me know what I can do to improve it.Givememoney17 (talk) 01:14, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

The Sinusitis Relief Centre

Hello,

You deleted my article regarding the above because it did not comply with section A7 of wikipedia. I would like to start by saying that I admire people like yourself who give up their own time to ensure that Wikipedia maintains a high standard. The Sinusitis Relief Centre helped me get rid of my chronic sinusitis and I am eternally grateful to them for doing so. I was also depressed due to my sinusitis and had been to doctors etc. without success. Can you imagine getting up every day to sinus pain, headaches, tiredness etc. Thankfully I am now back to being my old self. The Sinusitis Relief Centre has also helped thousands of other people do the same. Many people don't just use Wikipedia as an educational source but also to understand their own medical condition with a view to getting help. These people have already been to doctors, who unfortunately have not helped them and often need somewhere else to turn. Anyone with a chronic medical condition will tell you that it reduces their quality of life. Believe me when I say that Wikipedia helps improve the quality of peoples lives. I put the article in hoping that The Sinusitis Relief Centre could help others. Is there any way it could be improved or modified in order that it meets with your approval and can be included. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JustinTT (talkcontribs) 13:30, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

I'll add context

Thanks! I will be adding content to all of the sikh military articles, those will not remain stubs for long, I just wanted something to start with so I could navigate through the Misl pages without having to create a new page every time. I hope you haven't deleted them? If you look at the history of the sikh empire page I am pretty good at citing my edits, and just added the harvard citation method to that page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Profitoftruth85 (talkcontribs) 00:52, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Deletion of page NightDragon

Hi PMDrive1061,

I'm trying to create a wiki page bit by bit for an independent feature film that is shortly to be released on DVD in the US and UK, and you deleted it while I was adding the sections. I'd like to understand what I did wrong, as it seems that a feature film being released is a credible item to have an article about, is it not? If you agree, any chance of restoring it?

thanks,

Need help and advice

Got a major question involving sockpuppetry, and believe it or not it doesn't involve everyone's favorite vandal. Back in 2008, an editor, Miamiboyzinhere, started picking a fight with the Orlando attraction editors. He claimed that the category tags and descriptions of attractions were wrong if they mentioned being in Orlando but were not physically within the city limits. After a fair amount of blunderbussing and rude edit summaries and generally uncivil behavior, he got blocked and then began socking to keep the argument going. After a while, he got bored and quit.

At the time, I found evidence that could suggest that the puppeteer was itself a bad-hand sock to another user. In the edit linked here, and in a series of edits around this one in the history, Miamiboyzinhere is fighting to include a picture credited to a Marc Averette, who also happens to be a registered user here. Again, in the edit history, you'll see Averette making edits as if nothing had happened earlier. Well, move back to present day. Averette has started playing around with the Orlando categories again, and is leaving similarly-worded responses to notices left by other editors.

Here's the question: I think it's pretty apparent that Averette has engaged in sockpuppetry, but is there a statute of limitations on such things? He's on the verge of becoming disruptive in the Orlando articles, and I'm really not sure what to do, so I'm asking your advice as an admin I have dealt with on numerous occasions, and don't expect you to enter the fray unless you feel an absolute need to. Other admins, including Jayron32, have been involved in this editor's history before.

Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

For helping take care of another sock of Hooon. I wish I could figure this one out; unlike Bambifan, this one doesn't talk at all. He just does what he wants, and when he's challenged, he blanks the talk page. Certainly not a good collaborator on a project that requires good collaboration. Sucks that we keep running into each other dealing with vandals/socks, but as always, thank you for your swift work. I think between the two of us, we've rolled back all this sock's edits. --McDoobAU93 (talk) 15:16, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

How can I change the article I submitted "Scream Country Haunted Forest" to be accepted

I submitted an article about Scream Country Haunted Forest about 15 min ago and from the time I submitted it until you deleted it was about 8 min. This event began 13 yrs ago as a fundraiser for area students. I worked with students to try to keep it simple and provide what we 'thought' would be acceptable 3rd party reference. We looked at other Halloween events like Howl O Scream in Florida to understand how to submit an educational article but not be promotional. Can you help me find a guide to where I can learn how to make this article important enough to be submitted without deletion? Thanks for your help. We got an email at unblock-en-l from the individual behind the account; it appears that it is the person who they were writing articles about self-promoting himself. AGF that they are who they say they are, there are a lot of problems with their edits but they need a chance to have it all explained to them. Can you engage on their talk page and work out the specifics a bit? Re your CSD A7 of Will Johnson (Australian footballer). Being a professional footballer, it is unlikely that he is a true A7. Help on Gallery Article

Maybe one or two years ago, I made the article - University of Santo Tomas Seals and Emblems. Though the article did encounter some copyright problems on its photos, the article was able to be on the stream for a while. Just when I thought everything was already good, a user so irresponsibly edited the article to deletion. Months after, a similar article was created, only to have the same fate as the first one. According to the Wiki Editors, the second article was deleted because it was created too similar to the first one and it, too, had the same copyright problems. Now, I'm planning to revive the article through UST college insignia, and I'm wondering if the article will have the same problems.

My questions: 1. Can I use the photos from the different Wiki Article in the new article? 2. Is there a way that we can recover the deleted article? Thanks. Pampi1010 (talk) 05:35, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

I have now somehow understood the reason why the article was deleted. [[12]] I just cant understand how to make a gallery without violating the rule for non-free images because most of the photos that I'll be using will come from the individual Wiki articles. Please help me on this. Thanks! Pampi1010 (talk) 06:05, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

I just noticed you blocked IP 64.134.0.0/16 due to "Block evasion: User:Bambifan101 attempting to edit via proxies in this range" I understand blocking them but I figured I would let you know this is the Local hospital IP address so I don't know if this blocks all of there wireless or not. I was in the past a member of this Association and believe they're still doing useful work. There are links to this page -- for instance from Text Encoding Initiative and I'd be prepared to provide a page which meets Wikipedia guidelines. Chris55 (talk) 21:27, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

XOP Networks Page Deletion

The recently created wikipedia page for XOP Networks was subject to speedy deletion. I justified the existence of the page by saying it was not created for promotion or vandalism. Please let me know if it is safe to begin editing the page under this new user name which more clearly identifies me as an individual, not a company associate. (I am not employed by XOP Networks, nor do I have any intention of promoting their products.) I simply wanted to begin their encyclopedia page so that others may learn about the company's history, founding, and miscellaneous facts. Again, I just want to know if I can safely make edits to this page under my new user name.

Is it okay to re-try creating this page?

Green Hornet revision

  1. There is a limited amount of space available in edit summary fields, so one sometimes has to choose between making the point of one's edit clear and being civil. I recommend that you allow for that in the future.
  2. Wikipedia is about verifiability not accuracy. Until you have a source you can cite in the article, and other Wikipedia articles are forbidden by the rules here, you cannot remove and replace that. Besides, in spite of your assertion I see nothing in that Wiki-article that contradicts the claim of "Crown Imperial." --Tbrittreid (talk) 22:49, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Mass Rollback

You mentioned on the Administrators' Noticeboard/incidents that you don't have any one-click rollback tool like twinkle. Have you ever tried Mass Rollback? One click on that button on a user's contribs page and every rollbackable edit goes poof. Note that, in the new skin, the button is located under the arrow on the contribs page, not on its own tab, so it might not be obvious. -Quinxorin (talk) 04:41, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Since you are an admin, you could probably get rollbackers with no problem, plus TWINKLE. Just don't get TWINKLE's rollback button and the rollbackers' rollback button confused. I have done that before. :) - NeutralHomerTalk • 05:10, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Actually, Mass Rollback requires Rollback. And the thing with regular rollback is that it can only revert one page at a time, rather than all a user's contributions. -Quinxorin (talk) 05:33, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Dan santa cruz wigwag.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Dan santa cruz wigwag.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. El Tepeyac

Seeing your entry on the Kitchen made me think of El Tepeyac in Boyle Heights/ELA. Ever been there? I thought Wikipedia had an article on the restaurant AKA Manuel's. It's mentioned in Timeline of the burrito. I could go for Manuel's but it would be a drive. ----moreno oso (talk) 03:03, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Ah, now I have been there. A must when downtown and you can walk to Olvera Street. Another must is The Pantry on Figueroa and Ninth. Clifton's Cafeteria is still around, but I forgot which street it was on. Re. the Spanish Kitchen: I actually saw the inside for myself back around 1985 or so after reading about it in the Times. It was eerie beyond belief. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:17, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Ever been to "El Gringo" in Manhattan Beach? That was the place I was trying to think of. I kept running it over in my mind and all I could think of was that it was off the main drag (Sepulveda) and it had to do with the "white dude" who took us there (kind of sounds racist but this guy knew his Mexican restaurants). I kept thinking, "White guy - restaurant. Has to do with him." "White - El Blanco? No, more like someone who didn't speak Spanish." When I heard "gringo" on the tube, it hit home. Now, if I could only remember the sub shop off Manchester and Lincoln Blvds in Westchester. He introduced us it which had the first torpedos I ever had. I was a poor kid from Boyle Heights who made it relatively good (so to speak and IMHO).

Thoughts? --Dave ♠♣♥♦1185♪♫™ 18:15, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

I think you should create a non-protected page that goofballs like that Serbian could rant and rave and you could ignore it - maybe even take it off your watch list. User:MissAmericaGirl

I notice you blocked User:MissAmericaGirl as being a sockpuppet and for vandalism. She has now asked to be unblocked so thought I'd drop you a note. To be honest while her edits were annoying, I was somewhat surprised that she was blocked. She was a new editor and obviously unaware of the rules and I feel she wasn't really given a chance to rethink after I left her the warning. Her reasoning for starting a second account sounds reasonable as well. The editing was mildly disruptive but hardly vandalism and now that she's been warned about the National Sweetheart stuff I think she deserves a second go. Cheers. GAF

Hi

I just wanted that someone with special authorization may edit the Helmand campaign, like adding Georgia as ISAF participant. I edited it and am not sure if it will stay or vanish because of the semi-protection. I added the official MOD source for the deployment and combat force figure. Maybe you can make sure that it stays. That's all I wanted :-)

Thank you.

Good Catch

Good catch on the Deangelomywayentfans/Dingbat2007 sock. This, does though, bring up a new problem. The user was adding (via an IP before making the sockpuppet account) "slogans" (think "Live. Local. Latebreaking" or "On Your Side") to television station pages. These are all unsourced fan cruft and should be removed on sight. So in your travels around the Wiki, I would ask you to removed those while you are removing the "former on-air staff" sections. This will be a big help to me. - NeutralhomerTalk • 18:22, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Another culinary recommendation

Before I start, are you good or do you need another fish whacking? I'm in the mode to whack. Now, this past weekend I was gone and visited friends. While at a daylong civic event, I commented that I had introduced several friends recently to the 7-Eleven sushi rolls and that they had found them to be quite good in a pinch. As we were pretty much like staked goats, who could not roam too far from our civic duties, we began to wonder about lunch and I said, "Hey, there's a 7-11 across the street and I'm all over it." A couple of us walk there and I demo'ed how to buy the big mug which comes with a quote free round of soda and then chose my sushi. Two other brave souls bought sushi and smaller sodas before we headed back. Needless to say, they liked the sushi and then noted that my mug was still ice cold four hours later when we went for the second round. It's an insulated jug that holds about 48 ounces when loaded with ice and is my second one. If I had known this was meant to happen, I would have brought my mug and saved a couple of bucks.

Today, I stopped at an ARCO ampm and noticed that it had the ad stating they had the new tortas which I have seen advertised on billboards. Curious, I thought for a buck twenty nine, what did I have to lose? I selected one carne asada and a second pollo in green sauce tortas; paid for my gas and then went outside to pump my truck. On the way, I decided to bite into the carne asada torta. It was great, had refried beans and was as good as any torta you could get a fast food location. I filled my truck, went back inside and got two more as it was close enough to lunch time. I was going to wait until I got home to eat the chicken pollo but desire got the best of me. I think the first one was better but the taste/desire may have dulled by the first one. According to the clerk who also appeared to be Hispanic, he said that he liked them and they were quite popular. Unfortunately because they were just being made, the cook had not put out the lettuce which would have been a nice touch. I tell you I am a connoisseur in tortas and very particular about repeat buys as I got spoiled because I used to live next to a Mexican restuarant that made the best ever tortas I ever had which include home made versions. Granted, there was no avocado which I like on both sushi and tortas but the very basic ones I got at ampm were priced right and two easily would be about ⅔ the price of a regular sized model. But, in my neck of the woods, it's hard for this bear to snag good tortas. If you have an ARCO that has a kitchen, you might to check them out!!! ----moreno oso (talk) 19:29, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

deletion of Guru Tegh Bahadur Advertisers ...???

Well, they are the one to introduce Bus Advertising in Delhi NCR region thats why I added that and rest of the details I currently don't have. I would have added those in 1-2 days why have you deleted the article —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ashu1947 (talkcontribs) 06:11, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

I will try and answer this since it is late on this end of the world and PMDrive1061 appears to be offline. Your article was probably deleted as it was not notable or verifible. Please see WP:FIRST to see what all you will need to make your article notable and verifible. This will help greatly so your article isn't deleted. Now, you can ask PMDrive1061 to undelete the article and move it to your userspace so that you can work on it before putting it back into mainspace. This is done for new editors (or anyone really) so they may work on their article, get it up to snuff and move it back into mainspace. Work with an admin, ask questions of them, they know about editing articles and what should or shouldn't be in them, what you need to make things notable and verifible. If you need help, ask. - NeutralhomerTalk • 06:23, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

WP:MFD

Hi, PMDrive1061. I noticed that you are an active admin that deals with deletion on a regular basis. WP:MFD is frequently backlogged; it had a one-week backlog earlier this month. This week, there is another one-week backlog. Would you consider "adopting" MfD, since fewer admins watch MfD compared to AfD? Thanks, Cunard (talk) 04:23, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Articles for deletion nomination of UltraFly Model Corporation

I have nominated UltraFly Model Corporation, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/UltraFly Model Corporation. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Trouted

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

You have been trouted for what we in the military would call GP (General Purpose) Reasons. I could suggest a remedy but am unsure if the Greyhound Bus Station is still in Los Angeles where I remember to be. And, to tell you the truth, I could go for some sushi today. May have to walk down to the 7-Eleven. ;) ----moreno oso (talk) 16:07, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Okay, maybe the trout was a little strong. I'm still upset about hearing about Jack Hanna "trouting" one of my cousins in this URL. The GP thingie and Greyhound Bus Station are funny stories but I have a feeling you're not in the mood for a funny story. I could tell you about the "rolled up paper trick" which usually works with women too. :O ----moreno oso (talk) 16:13, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
OK, I get it now. "Trouser trout problems" with the wife being gone. Hmmm, I will now tell you one of my recent "trouser trout problems" (although mine doesn't concern a woman and was self-inflicted). Some days I'm pretty bad about taking combat bear type hibernations (snoozes). Well, this one recent day, I take a nap, get up 35 minutes prior to my show time for an event, dress in the dark and rush to the meeting site. I get there and have to go to the bathroom. Well, I put my shorts on backwards and nearly wet myself. Okay, I'll be honest. I did wet myself. ----moreno oso (talk) 16:20, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

What a load of dingoes kidneys. You feel free to call that particular spade a spade anytime you want, my friend. Or a retarded asshat. In the real world respect is earned, not given. Here we give automatically, which is fine up to a point, but as you and I know this little shithead passed that point a looooong time ago. If anyone needs a BF101 block done while you are on your break they can feel free to contact me about it, I haven't tangled with the little bastard in a while so I'm up for it if needed. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:44, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Agree- that wasn't really necessary. Tommy! [message]
PMDrive, several editors at ANI seem to have misunderstood what I was asking for, even though I was quite explicit. I am not suggesting that you leave Wikipedia, nor that you be desysoped. Nor am I suggesting that your efforts to protect Wikipedia from vandals were done with anything other than the best intentions. I am more sympathetic to your position than you probably realize. It is very clear that you are frustrated with the situation and, for that reason, I think you need to find something to do on Wikipedia that will be enjoyable rather than aggravating. Once you reach the point where you are egging on the vandals by calling them names, your efforts have become counterproductive anyway. In truth, you are only a convenient example of what is a wider problem and the comments of various editors on that ANI thread prompted my post. I am sorry that my comments upset you. Had I not been blocked, I would have apologized sooner.Delicious carbuncle (talk) 22:12, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Unfortunately, part of the problem is that certain folks, like the Bambifan101/Alexcas11 duo, this Zsfgseg fellow, and the like won't let him just do what he likes. These folks have serious psychological issues, IMHO, as they constantly stalk and harrass their "pet" editors, following them around the Wiki, and even engaging in off-wiki harassment where they can. And they do this for months, if not years (BF is coming up on three) - what kind of mental issues would lead to such behavior. In the real world, that would get you arrested. On Wikipedia, it might take a year to get you indef blocked, and another one to get you community banned. The only way to maybe get away from them seems to be to just leave all together as, unfortunately, Wikipedia just doesn't have the necessary policies and cahones to really put their foot down regarding repeat vandals and, especially, stalking. You can't even do a rename to get away from them due to the poor design of the software and the insistence that all renames be public, even if someone used their rename name not realizing the virulent nature of some Wikipedia editors.
It was asked about in the ANI, but PMDrive DID contact the ISP of Bambifan, more than once, and it did nothing. They dont' listen and don't care about reports from "regular" editors. Wikipedia is too afraid to do real blocks to really get their attention. If Wikipedia blocked an entire ISP's ranges a few times, I suspect those ISPs would get off their duffs and enforce their terms of service. There is also the secondary issue of admins often being lax to block obvious socks without an SPI or CU if they aren't "familiar" with the case, allowing those folks to make new socks and continue their campaign for hours, sometimes days, before stopped. There are depressingly few admins willing to do what needs to be done and who are around often enough to do rapidly. I know where his frustration comes from and he only said what I've thought myself. Bambifan101 is just one of many, and not even the worse of the bunch as he is mostly easily identifiable and usually just identifies himself to get attention. The real issue is that there seems to be absolutely nothing Wikipedia, as it is, can do to stop it, and it seems like it has no desire to really deal with it. In the end, though, if Wikipedia doesn't pull its head out of the sand, in another few years all that will be left is the vandals, as most of the good editors didn't come here just to deal with that kinda stuff but to actually edit. I know I've had folks IRL asking why I bother anymore due to the multiple stalkers I've had to deal with, and I'm to the point of asking the same.
I would be curious to know what if you found PMDrive's venting a violation of WP:CIVIL, what do you think of the outright trash that goes on at places like Wikipedia Review where active admins from this site routinely denegrate and insult other editors who are in good standing, with absolutely no consequences here? -- AnmaFinotera (talk ~ contribs) 01:57, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure that it is useful to bring other sites into the discussion. Every community has its own definition of what is acceptable in terms of discourse and behaviour. Obviously Wikipedia Review has a very different idea of what is acceptable, but while Wikipedia is (ostensibly) a goal-directed group endeavour, Wikipedia Review does not seem to have any specific shared goal. I liken it to interactions that might be commonplace outside the workplace but would be inappropriate inside the workplace, even if between the same participants.
At the risk of being overly simplistic and naive, I doubt that any technological measures stronger than edit filters will be put in place to deal with vandalism so long as there are humans willing to do the job. Admins, new page patrollers, etc are the cannon fodder of Wikipedia. For a model of what I think should be done, look at the credit card industry - they have gone from a passive, user-reported fraud detection system to an active, preventative system. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 13:33, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
Bottom line: you're one of the good guys willing to go into the trench and do the mano a mano battles. Don't let it get you down and remember that the good guys win. ----moreno oso (talk) 14:03, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Why did you suppress the contributions of that Bambifan sock? They weren't abusive in any way. What more, why did you not give a reason? AFAIK, deleting anything that is not especially abusive is considered an abuse of the tool. (X! · talk)  · @094  ·  01:15, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I've undone these revision deletions, as they do not fit the criteria for redaction. Please do not hide edits when there is no need for it. Selective redaction is only for gross abuse (BLP violations, insulting or degrading material, copyright violations, etc). Hiding edits from a known sock is unnecessary. Fair use rationale for File:Dante lobby card.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Dante lobby card.jpg.

If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 22:30, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

I have given the user some advice on how to proceed without falling foul of our policies in future, I do not anticipate any further disruption form this user and I believe we can and in this case should write the incident off to the usual newbie unfamiliarity with due process. Question on some rangeblocks.

Hiyas PMDrive1061, due to an unblock request on the unblock-en-l mailing list i noticed some rangeblocks you placed two days ago, and after having a look i had a few questions regarding them, since 2 out of 3 were blocked as proxy ranges.

The first IP range (173.161.0.0/16) seems to be comcasts Business Network, which provides web access to com cast business customers. The range was blocked for harrasement and personal attacks, but trying as i might i cannot see any personal attacks in this ranges contributions that warrants a year long rangeblock. Most edits seem good, and i cannot seem to see any revisions that have been oversighted or revdelled.

The second IP range (134.76.0.0/16) was also blocked for personal attacks, in combination with a statement that it was a proxy range. Checking the DNS on this range, i found it belonged to the university of Dortmund. I equally cannot see any grave vandalism in the range contributions that may warrant a year long block. I haven't really checked on the proxy matter, so i would also ask how you determined it - seeing its a university i presume that students have access to many workstation computers though.

The last range (91.204.0.0/16) was blocked for being a proxy and harrasement, but safe for two 5 days old attacks from a singular IP i cannot seem to find any grave vandalism in the range contributions. Equally i noted that the range consists of smaller /22 ranges which seem to be registered to various different companies. Therefor i kind of wonder if it is really a proxy range, and if yes, if a smaller block would suffice. It would be strange if a proxy would go cross-company.

Well, that was a long list of text i guess. Any light you could shed on these would be appreciated :). Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 22:53, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Hello. I have been incessantly stalked and now e-mail bombed by a banned user across this wiki and several others for the last two weeks. The user name is User:BoxingWear among others; Jimbo himself banned him under the name "George Reeves Person" or something like that. There are at least three other users here who have been stalked for years by this whack job. One has provided me a list of his known IPs which I blocked. and this idiot is now using proxies and zombies to attack and impersonate me. Take a look at this: [15] whereby virtually all the changes and protections have been due to this same deranged maniac. For that matter, look at the edit history of my talk page. I have been in touch with law enforcement over this and the idiocy continues. So, as he continues to attack me, I am simply blocking all his proxy ranges as a precaution. This guy is batshit insane and I would rather block a few innocent users at this point. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 23:05, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
PS: I'm working hand-in-hand with a third party at Eflightwiki who has CU rights. That's where he's been hitting the hardest. PMDrive1061 (talk) 23:07, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
Would it be a feasible to disable the e-mail feature for yourself on Wikipedia? Personally i use a throw-away e-mail account which forwards my Wikipedia-related mail to my main account, which allows me to cut-off any person who spams me without revealing my real mail address. Equally i use Gmails filtering feature to blacklist certain e-mail accounts. In case my account receives an e-mail from the blacklist Google will automatically delete the mail and forward it to another throw-away account which, in turn, sends a copy of the complete CAN-SPAM act to the user who send me the mail in the first place (Thus effectively bombarding them without me ever noticing).
I know this situation is incredibly bad, but is there a chance we could use a combination of protections, e-mail settings and blocks to keep Mr. funny out? If these are zombie proxies it is possible that they are botnet-related, which means that they could be in virtually every range (Seeing the geographic diversity this is quite likely). Equally a zombie proxies is likely only one (Or a couple) of PC's in a single network; Blocking entire networks as a precaution could in effect blank complete geographic area's from Wikipedia access while not really impacting the zombie proxies used. Regardless, best of luck with this situation - it easy for me to talk about solutions, because i'm not in the situation myself. If the roles were switched i wonder what my response would be though. (talk page stalker) I think many users have a wikipedia-only email account for that reason, including myself. I hope you're doing okay PMD.. Tommy! [message] 03:40, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
I'm going to have to add to this rangeblock query thing PMDrive. You're blocking half of academia when they have a single misconfigured server on the whole /16. These are not proxy ranges, and it would be great if you could either block the individual proxies instead (the ones that aren't blocked) and lift the range blocks, or say that it's OK for me to take a look at them for you. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 19:20, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps as a side-note of someone affected: The 2nd IP range does not belong to the University Dortmund but to the "Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung Göttingen" (Society for scientific computing in Göttingen) which or operated by (and more importantly: handles the internet structure for) the University Göttingen and the Max Planck Society (though probably "only" the four institutes located in Göttingen). In other words: You range-blocked the research institutions of an entire city for one year. I have not looked into your problem and I am also not familiar with the WP code of conduct concerning IP blocks. But perhaps reconsider if your stalker problems justify such a drastic step (not to mention that you could also try to contact the GWDG). Being directly effected by this I naturally tend to "no"; it's pure coincidence that I had registered an account here back in dunnowhen to even be able to tell you (since account creation is also blocked). --timo (talk) 22:08, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Given the obvious and unnecessary collateral I've not waited but gone ahead and unblocked the following ranges:

  • 134.76.0.0/16 - Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen, academic network used by University of Göttingen and Max Planck Society
  • 173.161.0.0/16 - Comcast business IPs in Illinois and Philadelphia
  • 91.204.0.0/16 - 63 separate organisations, some domestic ISPs, some business IPs, some server ranges
  • 212.219.0.0/16 - JANET hundreds of different colleges and universities in the UK
  • 84.38.0.0/16 - 16 separate organisations including University of Athens, some domestic ISPs, some business IPs, some server ranges

This is without prejudice to targeting blocks more accurately, either on the individual IPs or the actual proxy server ranges. These ranges however are not proxy ranges, and sweeping /16 blocks on such ranges are neither appropriate nor effective. This user, by the way, generally uses HTTP proxies which aren't on dedicated server ranges, which are dynamic or unstable enough to be closed within about six months, and impossible to rangeblock. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:15, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
