Hi there,

I noticed you added a {{cleancat}} template to Category:Greater Toronto Area. Before you added this, the category didn't actually exist - one of the quirks of MediaWiki, the software used for wikipedia, is that articles can be added to categories that don't exist, and will show up in that category. By adding the template, you created the category!

To answer your question from the category's talk page, no the category isn't necessary right now. We may use it in the future to organize other categories for the urban area, but we're not there yet.

Anyway, let me belatedly welcome you to Wikipedia. if you have any questions, feel free to leave a message on my talk page. Mindmatrix 15:03, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's a heck of a quirk - Category:Greater Toronto Area had 3 or 4 links to communities
I haven't had a look at yet!PKT 17:33, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, quite a quirk...aside: would you object if I deleted the category? I'll de-link the three articles that still populate it. Mindmatrix 18:48, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
No objection at all from me! PKT 02:27, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks - I've deleted it. Mindmatrix 14:39, 13 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bradford edit

I marked this article as cleanup simply because it has so many one-sentence paragraphs, and includes some trivial information. The text simply doesn't flow from one idea to the next. Make whatever changes you think are necessary (I notice someone has recently added some background info). Could you also verify the bit about Portuguese ancestry, if possible?

In general, it would be preferable to include verifiable and relevant data, rather than prognostication or advertising. For example, one of the statements in the article is Geranium Group plans on building enough homes in the next 25 years to expand the town to 120,000 people. Bradford(south Simcoe), along with Guelph and parts of Durham region are designated as the next major growth areas for the GTA. This strikes me as advertising. Instead, if you find information from BWG's planning department about expected growth etc, that would be far better; there's no need to mention a specific developer. I hope this helps! Duplicate content edit

Hi again! If you find articles, such as you did with Kleinberg, that duplicate content in another article (usually because the creator of the new page mis-spelled the title or isn't aware of naming guidelines), simply feel free to create a redirect to the appropriate article. Redirects from common mis-spellings are especially useful, since they silently guide the reader to the right place. Mindmatrix 15:49, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lists of mayors edit

Generally, if an article contains a series of related things, it probably belongs in a list. Naming standards for lists are List of XXX (see Naming conventions for all sorts of gory details). Note that you can have each of List of mayors of Markham, Ontario, Mayor of Markham, Ontario, and Don Cousens et al. You can categorize the individuals in Category:Mayors of places in Canada (I think this category is what you were looking for), or one of its sub-categories.

In any event, don't be shy about adding content. If you put it in the wrong place, it can always be moved, deleted, redirected, reformatted, or merged.

BTW: to link to a category inline in a talk page, simply precede it with a colon, like so [[:Category:Mayors of places in Ontario]], which renders as Category:Mayors of places in Ontario. That way, you can link to the category without include the talk page in that category. Mindmatrix 18:06, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Opera atelier edit

At the top of the page (assuming you use the standard CSS skin/theme) you should see a button labelled move. Once you click on it, it'll give you the current title, and request the desired new title and a reason for the move. If the destination article already exists, you'll receive a warning, otherwise the move will succeed. It'll also inform you to check articles that link to it, in order to update the links on those pages. Give it a try with this article; I'll fix up any mistake you make, though I doubt it'll be necessary. Mindmatrix 22:56, 30 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cardinal Carter, or Ecole Renaissance? edit

Hi. I noticed your recent edit of Aurora, Ontario to remove mention of École Renaissance. I did a quick search and found this info:

It seems to me that original statement was indeed correct, though I'm having a hard time determining if this is in the YCDSB, or if CSDCCS is a different board. The Ontario Ministry of Education listing suggests they are different boards, and different schools. However, the address for both is the same. Perhaps YCDSB split into a French and English boards...thoughts? Mindmatrix 17:35, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Blast! I had forgotten about the French/Catholic Board. I'll put Ecole Renaissance back into the Aurora article, but make it clearer which Board it belongs to....--PKT 01:36, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to a WikiProject edit

Hi PKT,

Thank you so much for "cleaning up"after me for my spelling and grammar errors! I am here, on behalf of other members of WP:GHR, to invite you to join our WikiProject Golden Horseshoe Roads. We want to invite you to be our "clean-up counselor", which means that you may help us to wikify our articles, fix typos, and most of all grammars and spelling mistakes. We think that you are very capable of this position because you are proficient in correcting grammar mistakes and proofreading (according to your contribution). Furthermore, on your userpage (and from my own experience), I see that you know quite a bit of the Greater Toronto Area.

P.S. : If you do not know what the term Golden Horseshoe means, read its article. Also, the newsletter of this WikiProject will be delivered by mid-February (Myself, and Ilovevancouver90909, are busy with exams right now.) One more thing, we are currently working on regional roads, landmarks, and communities articles right now.

Please let me know if you have made your decision! We need your help!

Lead Story section edit

The "lead story" on the portal is from February/07, and it's currently September/07. I removed it and Mkdw reinstated it with the comment "Outdated sections aren't to be removed. Either update them or leave them so someone else can update it." Fine. Who knows how to do that? I have tried and I can't figure it out. PKT 23:18, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

  1. Create a new article at Portal:Current events/Canada/News Feed/Archive/xxxxx (where xxxx is your article)
  2. add <noinclude>{{archive}}</noinclude> [[Category:Current_events_Canada]] to the page you've created
  3. write the article
  4. change Portal:Current events/Canada/Lead Story 's transclusion to {{Portal:Current events/Canada/News Feed/Archive/xxxxx}} from {{Portal:Current events/Canada/News Feed/Archive/LS TSX}} (where xxxxx is your article)
  5. update Portal:Current events/Canada/Archive to link to your article.

Hi! The problem you had with the reference was trying to put template code in the <ref> tag. Normally, to use this format you need to enter:

Keeshonden edit

Hello Peter,

My name is Mike. I am a new member of the Keeshond world, and I will be adopting my own conformation Keeshond from Nightwind this June/July. I learned that this was your username from the Keeshond talk pages. I definitely consider Keeshee to be one of the "greats", along with Ruttkay, Chandray, etc. It is truly a wonderful kennel. I was talking with Debbie of Nightwind, and Keeshee came up because some of your wonderful dogs are in her lineages. I was disappointed to learn that you had stopped breeding some time ago. You guys were actually one of the kennels I had considered, along with Foxfair, Bonnyvale and Nightwind, until learning that you don't breed anymore. I see that your website hasn't been updated for a while. I had been wondering, what made you stop breeding? Are you still active in the Kees community, and do you currently own any Keeshonden? It really is a pleasure to meet you, knowing all that you and your wife have done for the Keeshond community. Keeshee is truly deserving of high praise, considering all that the program has done for the breed.

Mike MAP91 (talk) 03:37, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello again Peter,
Thanks for the information. I definitely think you made the right choice, and I would have done the same thing in your situation. The Royal Conservatory is such a great school. I play the Alto Saxophone, and my music teacher said it is like the Juilliard of Canada. It is nice to hear you still have 9 (!) Keeshonden. I'm sure that you are never cold at night, even in Canada :). It must be very rewarding to have bred and shown a BIS female. That is quite the accomplishment. Do you still show? I will be attending the Capital Keeshond Club's Harrisburg, PA specialty this April. I am really looking forward to seeing how everything works, as well as seeing all the different Keeshonden and their handlers. What I really look forward to is the trip to Ohio. It really brings me to that proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, which is my puppy. I feel that this is really bringing me to a new milestone in my life, as well as initiating me into a lifetime of rewarding experiences. It is nice to have learned a little more about Keeshee, as my puppy will most likely have some Keeshee blood in him/her. Now I know the full story of the Keeshee program. It is also nice to have spoken to an experienced Keeshond breeder and fancier like yourself. Take care, and stay warm up there in Ontario!

Your edit summary usage edit

Hi there. When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field. If you are adding a section, please do not just keep the previous section's header in the Edit summary field - please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you. - Milk's Favorite Cookie 01:25, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
My response: Hi Milk - yes, I know about Edit Summaries - I use them most of the time. Check my contributions. I am working through Ontario-related articles and adding a lot of missing project tags. In the interest of covering ground and increasing volume, I am not adding Edit Summaries to each and every one. Thanks for the visit.

Sure! Don't worry about it! Just a friendly reminder! Also:

Cameron Waterman, inventor of the outboard motor and famous resident of Grosse Ile/Downriver Michigan edit

I saw that you recently removed Cameron Waterman's name from the list of "Famous Downriver Detroit Residents or Natives" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downriver). Grosse Ile historians consider Waterman to be one of the most significant inventors who has ever lived in the community (he is noted in Grosse Ile's Wikipedia article). Waterman's invention was a major innovation in boating and is arguably the most commercially successful invention to come from Grosse Ile or any other Downriver community (http://www.escapewatercraft.com/PDFs/Detroit_Free_Press_021005.pdf). During the 100th anniversary of his invention in 2005, the Grosse Ile Historical Society featured an exhibit of his early outboard motors which was attended by the public. According to Wikipedia's guidelines, it seems that Waterman's invention makes him worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia. What is the basis of your objection to including Waterman on the list of "Famous Downriver Residents or Natives"?Mhistory (talk) 06:50, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

I don't believe Mr. Waterman is sufficiently notable. When I encountered the list, his name was a redlink, although he had been added to the list in June/06. I got only a few Google hits for him, and quite frankly his name is not well known, in fact I'm not convinced he meets the guidelines of Wikipedia:Notability (people). Now, that having been said, you are free to add his name back, but unless there's more material to establish Mr. Waterman's fame somebody else might one day take his name off the list again. PKT (talk) 13:22, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for explaining your reasons for the removal. Wikipedia's standards for "notability" of "creative professionals" include: "The person is regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by their peers or successors" and "the person is known for originating a significant new concept, theory or technique." Waterman's invention of the outboard motor is widely recognized among boating enthusiasts and historians as being very significant, so I believe the case can be made that he meets Wikipedia's standards for "notability," but I'll put him back on the list and we'll see what others think. The fact is that Wikipedia's standards for "notability" are rather subjective in many articles that apparently have passed review. For example, I think few, if any, serious historians and sociologists would in general consider professional wrestlers and porn actors to be notable members of society or encyclopedic, but many people are listed in Wikipedia for these dubious accomplishments. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mhistory (talkcontribs) 16:38, 6 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Listas Parameter edit

Hi!

I noticed that you have been adding the Canada Wikiproject banner to some articles and have been including a value for the listas parameter. The listas parameter affects how the page is sorted in a category and does not affect how the page appears in that category. It is generally not necessary to include disambiguation information such as "(Politician)" in the listas parameter value.

Also there are a few rules regarding the format of the listas parameter. The most important one for your purposes is that no accented letters are permitted in the listas parameter. (The reason for this is that computers do not sort accented characters immediately after the unaccented versions but after "z". Notice the almost 600 pages after "Zz" in Category:Biography articles with listas parameter.)

Another feature about the listas parameter that may save you some time is that if there is a value for the listas parameter in the Biography project banner, there does not have to be a value in any other banner.

It was removed by Orlady with the following edit summary 'Removing dated prod template; I have found other sources using this term'. Please consider discussing your concerns with Orlady before pursuing deletion further yourself. If you still think the article should be deleted after communicating with the 'dePRODer,' you may want to send the article to AfD for community discussion.
