Hospitalized for Wikistress!!!!!
I am suffering from wikiburnout and chronic Wikistress.

And real life is very much in the way these days.
I probably won't be able to log in as frequently and contribute as much as I would like. Messages left here probably won't get a quick response as before. Your patience would be very much appreciated.

Take care, everyone.
Happy editing.

MainPage balance edit

Hi, you were wondering why DYK gets so long sometimes. I kind of outlined this at WT:DYK#Column balance on Main Page. Basically, at the screen resolution I was editing at when I did the update, it looked fine -- the columns were balanced. At a different resolution, the columns look off (I've noticed this difference between my work and home computers, for instance). Alternatively, ITN gets shortened and the left column ends up being too long (such as happened today in this edit, which happened after I added in an extra DYK tidbit to balance out the layout. I just wanted you to know so that you wouldn't think we DYK people were trying to put in more than our fair share. :) howcheng {chat} 06:16, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, howcheng. I understand the problem. It's not just the screen. Font size and how texts wrap at the end of each line also vary a lot, making it very hard to keep MainPage balanced. I have to say right now DYK indeed looks a bit too long with 8 wordy hooks. However, it's not too bad. The blank space next to DYK is small.
The (bad) ITN edit you mentioned was made by a drive-by contributor, and the oldest item was probably removed without considering the layout on MainPage. However, we are supposed to have only 3 to 5 items at one time, according to ITN guidelines. So, I'd ask, next time you consider adding an extra DYK item for MainPage balance, please check if there is a 6th (or 7th) item on ITN. Such old news is probably left there, instead of being displaced when a new item was added, because TFA & DYK were long at the time. It may not be needed to fill up the space after midnight UTC if the current TFA is shorter than the previous. It may be better to remove an old ITN item rather than adding extras to DYK. Less work for you, anyway. :-)
TFA & SA/OTD are preset. It's up to us editors at DYK & ITN to maintain the left-right balance on MainPage. And it's a moment-to-moment balancing act. Happy editing. --PFHLai 07:26, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

SN 2006gy image edit

Note that on the bottom of the NASA webpage that you pulled this image from (here) there is a link to the original authors (here) at the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The image is also credited to them (NASA/CXC), which means it is their work. Their image use policy (here) clearly states "The images on this web site may be used for non-commercial educational and public information purposes", means it can't be used on the Commons. Thanks. --Tom (talk - email) 21:11, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ooops! Thank you for the note, Tom. I had thought that the Chandra X-Ray Observatory was NASA's, so the image must be PD. I didn't know that the Chandra X-Ray Center was not part of NASA. I'll be more careful next time. Thanks, again. --PFHLai 09:16, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've been in contact with the observatory to help clear up their copyright policy. It ends up that images credited to NASA/CXC (and also NASA/CXC/[name of specific author], i.e. NASA/CXC/M. Weiss), are public domain images that have the same usage restrictions as any standard NASA image. Their "noncommercial and educational use only" policy is in place because they use a great many images from third parties. For example, the photo montage that was uploaded has one PD image (the illustration, which I believe is what you cropped and uploaded) and at least one copyrighted image from the Lick telescope. The other image credited to UC Berkeley may or may not be copyrighted; I'm clearing that up. Thanks for your understanding. --Tom (talk - email) 13:01, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, Tom, for taking care of these copyright issues with the picture. I'm glad that the nice image is now available for all and back in use on the SN 2006gy page. And thanks for uploading the high res. version, too. Cheers! --PFHLai 23:05, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Unknown Child on ITN edit

The image was next to an article about the bridge collapse. It made no sense. Please explain why the image was there. -Nv8200p talk 01:53, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

The new image goes with a new item further below and you've removed it. It clearly says "pictured" there. Images at ITN are always at the top-right corner. We cannot change the layout of ITN, as the template is also used elsewhere. --PFHLai 01:57, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, looked like vandalism to me. You are welcome to change it up as you see fit. -RegardsNv8200p talk 02:05, 4 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:JolsonStamp.gif edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:JolsonStamp.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr/talk 20:37, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

That was uploaded almost 2 years ago! I've forgotten about it already. Thanks for the reminder, Angr.
Okay. I've just added a short paragraph of fair use rationale onto the image description page. I hope it's good enough. --PFHLai 16:38, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Barnstar Mockery edit

On May 7th of this year, at 14:37, the user page User:Dr Spam (MD) was created. Within a period of 48 hours, User:Dr Spam (MD) had placed approximately 55 barnstars on user pages and user talk pages. Many recipients doubted the sincerity of the sentiments behind these barnstars, in part because of the comments placed by Dr Spam on the barnstars. A sampling of the reasons that Dr. Spam offered for presenting barnstars to editors:

  • Hi - I am putting this here in case there's trouble later. Please accept this tireless barnstar thing for all of your wiki-activity. Thanks. User:Dr Spam (MD) 16:08, 11 May 2007

  • Hi I am leaving you with this barnstar for you to reflect carefully on. I will provide the citation in a few days once you have had the opportunity to consider why I might think that you deserve it. Peace User:Dr Spam (MD) 16:50, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Well done for all of your fantastic editing / writing: you are obviously a genius of our day, shining like the brightest barnstar against a dark barnnight in these new and difficult wiki-times. I therefore award you the surreal barnstar (I can't get the other barnstars to work properly - my apologies.) Please note that you have no right to remove the barnstar, for it is sacred. LEAVE WELL ALONE! Many thanks.

  • awesome contribution to this web site! have a lovely barnstar thing User:Dr Spam (MD) 12:01, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • cool editing
  • Awesome
  • Cool.
  • I am awarding you a surreal barnstar because you obviously deserve it! Keep up the good work - don't slacken off, it'll get harder before it gets easier!
  • Hy my cat (the fat white one) is awarding you this barnstar of diligence because he doesn't eat fish either. He just likes to eat biscuits - or so he says. But how then does he get so fat????

Occasionally Dr. Spam's comments did appear sincere (if vague), but a review of the record indicates that sincere-appearing comments were generally generated during a massive cut-and-paste session. There were also many barnstars presented with no comments at all, and even more that User:Dr Spam (MD) presented without signing his name to indicate from whom the award was coming.

In response, once this pattern of apparent insincerity was established, a few experienced editors asked Dr. Spam to desist from barnstar spamming, in the belief that randomly awarding barnstars devalues the entire barnstar program. (Indeed, so random was the placement of barnstars, that some were even placed on wiki accounts that had not been active for over a year.) Dr. Spam has now stopped, presumably recognizing that his efforts were not appreciated by the majority of editors.

Most of the barnstars placed by Dr. Spam during his May campaign have been voluntarily removed by the editors on whose pages they were placed. You are receiving this notice because Dr. Spam's barnstar still remains on your page. If you feel that Dr. Spam's barnstar spamming was a form of mockery, you may choose to remove it yourself. But if the way this barnstar was "awarded" does not bother you, you are of course free to keep it on your page. After all, it is your page. This notification was simply for your information. HuskyHuskie 13:39, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note, HuskyHuskie. It was quite a few months ago, and the good doctor has already stopped. Let's assume Dr.Spam meant no mockery, and let bygones be bygones. -- PFHLai 07:43, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re: Vera Pezer at DYK edit

Just a note to say that you're not usually supposed to update the template with articles that you've written or nominated. In particular this article has significant technical glitches which I'm currently trying to fix. Regards, Espresso Addict 02:23, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay, Espresso Addict. I'll leave the DYK templates in your capable hands. Thanks for fixing the article, too. I could've caught that missing reflist, but.... Oh, well... --PFHLai 02:29, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Do go right ahead and add other people's hooks that catch your eye! I rarely add more than two or three to any update, even when it's backlogged, because I feel it's important to get a variety of different views on what's interesting. Cheers, Espresso Addict 02:39, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh, yes, Espresso Addict, I will do that. Frankly, I wasn't entirely confortable posting that 'Vera Pezer' hook on DYKNU. Just that it was the last interesting item from Sept.10 and I wanted to finish up that day's expiring section on the suggestions page. --PFHLai 01:44, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mabinlin edit

Hi PFHlai, Thanks for the nomination and your support. I did some correction as suggested. However, the article still needs to be looked at for grammar and misspelling (English is not my mother tongue) from a third party if you want it to put it forward on DYK. Furthermore this Mabinlin protein pages need a picture (Mabinlin 2 via the protein databsed). Unfortunately, I've no possibility to do it myself. So if you know someone within the Biochem bubble who would be able to do it, I would be grateful. CU. S. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sensonet (talkcontribs) 10:52, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sensonet, don't worry too much about your English. Your writing is fine. If there are things to edit, someone will come along and do so. That's what we do in Wikipedia. :-) If you like biochem, you may be interested in joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Molecular and Cellular Biology. And you may want to go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Molecular and Cellular Biology/Requested pictures to get help regarding peptide images. Hope this helps. I apologize edit

Between December 14, 2005 and June 7, 2007, I vandalized Wikipedia under my previous username (YechielMan) and under various IP addresses and alternate accounts.

I recently reviewed the contribution logs of all the accounts and IP addresses that I can recall having used. My goal was to identify all of the intentionally harmful edits I caused, and to apologize to the individual users who reverted those edits, or warned me, or blocked me.

Hence, I apologize to you and to all of the following users:

Adam Bishop, Amarkov, Antandrus, AntiVandalBot, Bdj (Badlydrawnjeff), Conk 9, CanbekEsen, DLand, Downwards, Eagle 101, Ericbronder, Gogo Dodo, High on a tree, Hut 8.5, Interiot, Jayjg, Jrwallac, Kingboyk, Kuru, Noclip, Patrick Berry, PFHLai, PhantomS, Pollinator, Rachack, Ranma9617, Rx StrangeLove, SlimVirgin, Tfrogner, TommyBoy, Vary, Woohookitty, Zzuuzz, and some anonymous IPs. (I also reverted one edit myself after it went unnoticed for three weeks.)

Thank you for maintaining the integrity of Wikipedia against everyone who has attacked it, including my old self.

PFHLai, thanks for the nom. Out of interest, why did you pick that particular sentence as worth knowing? I'd have thought that the last sentence in the article might have been the more interesting one. -- Fullstop 06:57, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome, Fullstop. Thank you for the nice new article.
It was an excuse to put a few links to various wikipages about Zoroastrianism (Zoroastrianism, Yasna & Zoroastrian festivals) on MainPage. Double nomination edit

Perhaps you noticed that I accidentally nominated the same article you did Muslim Agricultural Revolution one day later. The author and I have been discussing it and thinks we should work on hooks together as he likes mine too and suggests it for at least an alternate hook. Of course the nomination is yours, but the correct day is October 21, going by his article history. This gives him one more day of eligibility too, not that he will need it. So how about it? We could move the article to the correct day and use both hooks like the author wants. We could work on other hooks too. How about it? Regards, --Mattisse 22:13, 22 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Mattisse, for letting me know about the wrong date. I'll move my hook to the right date next to yours, where you can feel free to add more alt. hooks. BTW, I wrote my hook without the article's title because I was considering a pagemove to "Agricultural development during/Agriculture in the Islamic Golden Age". The current title is a bit unclear. It may be misinterpreted as 'Revolution of Muslim Agriculture'. And there's no such thing as 'Muslim Agriculture'. 'Muslim' only refers to the fact that the people involved shared Islam as a common religion. I ain't sure, so I didn't move the page. --PFHLai 06:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I see what you mean about the title. But the title did get me to read it. In the lead sentence, when you say "is known as . . ." it sounds like that is the general term for what happened then. Also, considering the (to me) really surprising information in the article, perhaps "Muslin Agricultural Revolution" can be read in the same light as the Industrial Revolution. --Mattisse 16:08, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
It got my attention, too. Anyways, it's on MainPage now. Never mind. BTW, I think Neolithic Revolution should be the one Agricultural Revolution to be read in the same light as the Industrial Revolution. -- PFHLai 04:09, 25 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

DYK - when to push? edit

Hi. I wanted to help keep DYK up to date. What is the deciding factor for when to push the next update into production? Right now the sign is red but you left an empty hook placeholder. Were you going to put another one out there? Or should I push whatever is there now? Sorry, just getting a feel for the environment there. Thanks. —Wknight94 (talk) 20:34, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Wknight94. Yes, I'm looking for more DYKs to add to DYKNU. I do check dates, and authorship, etc., and I try to diversify in topic and "geographical distribution" (not all US, ...), so it takes time. If you are anxious, please feel free to move qualifying items over from the list of suggestions. It's better to have more selectors, anyway. Not everyone will find the same things interesting. BTW, I don't think there's any rush to update DYK every 6.00000 hours. --PFHLai 20:42, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I didn't know how hard-and-fast the six hour rule was. Good to know. And for the next go-round (when I have more time), maybe I'll try my hand at selecting a few. Thanks for the input. —Wknight94 (talk) 20:48, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. I think DYK is usually refreshed after every 6 to 8 hours. The 6-hour rule, IIRC, was to ensure a minimum time of exposure on MainPage. Please be encouraged to fill up DYKNU whenever you like. Cheers! --PFHLai 20:56, 31 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cheating those who qualify? edit

The DYK next update had 3 expired noms. There are already about 20 noms expiring today. By placing expired noms (who do not qualify), we are rejecting those that do qualify.

To remedy that, I've replaced one expired hook with an unexpired one written by the same editor. Perhaps, we should have a few more hooks so that the editors of the December 22 hooks do not get cheated.

The biggest problem is that DYK does not get updated on time. Hard working hook editors are the losers. Actually, WP is the loser because people become discouraged if there good article and hook is not selected. Archtransit (talk) 16:53, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think those noms has anything wrong with them to get them disqualified. They expired not because the nominator or the article writer has done anything wrong. I don't think they should be penalized because DYK is not getting updated often enough, which I agree is a problem. ... more on this later. Gotta fix DYKNU first. --PFHLai (talk) 19:58, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the delayed reply, Archtransit. I'll try to be brief, I know I'll get yanked off the computer again soon....
Let me just say that I totally agree with you that, if we cheat those who qualify, then "Hard working hook editors are the losers. Actually, WP is the loser because people become discouraged if there good article and hook is not selected." However, IMO, "expired" noms may still "qualify" for DYK. As long as the nom was posted within the 5-day "deadline", I would consider using it on DYK. To skip usable hooks "slightly past the expiry date" just because admins have been slow in updating DYK, to me, is wasteful. How much past the expiry date is slightly ? I usually allow 1~2 days. I try not to do this, but it seems necessary in order to cope with the backlog. And then there will be "droughts", as on Christmas Day (UTC). So far there are only 10 nominated articles (3 from me), and we won't have enough hooks for use on December 29th/30th. I think we should pace ourselves accordingly. We can be more picky and, say, reject those with less than 2000 characters, if we have too many to choose from. I don't want to waste usable hooks. Hope this is good enough of a response.
BTW, thank you very much for keeping DYKNU well stocked. You and Gatoclass have been a great help. Much appreciated.
Happy editing. --PFHLai (talk) 06:35, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
There's no reason to skip noms just because they are a few days late due to lack of available room. As you yourself said PFH, we would probably be thousands of noms ahead by now if the update was always posted on time, so it simply isn't fair to users.
Anyway, we are obviously going to catch up over Xmas/Boxing Day, if we keep getting more noms than we can handle we will obviously have to start leaving out the least interesting ones, but we are not at that stage yet. Gatoclass (talk) 12:17, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, Gatoclass, no one likes to disappoint so many DYK contributors by blindly sticking to the rules. It's not the DYK contributors' fault that DYK is so often updated late. We'll catch up with the backlog soon, hopefully.
And thank you for posting those DYK notices last night after my last update. I was too sleepy to type. You, and Archtransit, have done a lot of good work at DYK. Thank you so much. Happy editing! :-) --PFHLai (talk) 18:15, 28 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I had extra time with myself this past week because I had a flu, and I couldn't have much decent sleep because of the symptoms. I couldn't work on the data analysis I was supposed to do as I couldn't concentrate enough to deal with spreadsheets, but I could edit at Wikipedia reasonably well bewteen naps. I feel much better now, and I'll go outside and play instead of nominating. :-)
My travel and work schedule won't allow me to wiki-contribute much in the next month or so. I guess I'll have to wait till February or March, 2008 to resume my DYK nom-bombardments. 8-D
Happy New Year to both of you. May everything be GREAT in two thousand and eight! Cheers!

Tagging of calcite sea edit

Your recent tagging of Calcite sea with the edit comment The current reference style is NOT consistent with the rest of Wikipedia is quite absurd. The article is far better referenced than 90+ percent of Wikipedia and Wikipedia referencing is totally inconsistent or absent. Harvard referencing, properly used, is perfectly acceptable. Please spend your time fixing real problems of referencing rather than slapping irrelevant tags on well referenced new articles. Vsmith (talk) 15:51, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

selected anniversaries edit

I have removed the 2004 anniversary of the Mars mission. Could this appear next year, which will be the 5th anniversary. The 4th is quite recent. In its place, I put a 1993 event, which will be the 15th anniversary of a tragic attack by a Pakistani madman who shot 5 people at the CIA, murdering two of them. This 15th anniversary will be a special and solemn day. Mrs.EasterBunny (talk) 20:12, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Mrs.EasterBunny. I see no problems with swapping the 2004 item out for a 1993 item on the 15th anniversary at Wikipedia:Selected anniversaries/January 25. You may want to also check with Zzyzx11 (talk · contribs), who is running that corner of MainPage these days, I think. Happy editing! --PFHLai (talk) 23:29, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: HMS Bonaventure edit

From T:DYK/N: My prose count was 1478 characters, which falls just short of the 1500-char requirement, which is the reason I originally removed it. I'll leave it to the discretion of whoever adds the hooks next whether or not being 98.5% of the way to 1500b is acceptable. Wizardman 22:42, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the quick reply, Wizardman. I'll let the nominator know. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 23:19, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

ITN reform edit

Since you're on a wikiholiday, I don't know if this is much use. But... You commented on monotonehell's previous proposal for ITN reform. Given recent events which have highlighted the continual problems with ITN, I've taken it, made a few modifications and I'm trying to bring it back. It's currently at User:Nil Einne/ITN reform and any comments or thoughts are appreciated. Also, although I put this on a subpage of my user page, I don't consider this my proposal and would appreciate any help in pushing this along particularly given it's a wide ranging proposal that is likely to take a very long time to get anywhere. I primarily put it there so I could work on it without creating confusion. Also, I thought it might be helpful to avoid a mad rush of people commenting so I'm just informing a few people at first Nil Einne (talk) 08:40, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know, Nil Einne. I'll post my comments at User talk:Nil Einne/ITN reform. Thanks. --PFHLai (talk) 22:33, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
