Hey--I can't dive too deeply into it now, but those DocumentCloud links, those citations make no sense to me, and while I suppose the one text I looked at was not copyrighted (right? cause the guy worked for the state? I don't know), I'm wondering about the totality of it. Also, I clicked the wrong button when I block-conflicted with you, but I reverted back to your block. And one more thing: all of a sudden Instagram is showing me funny baseball videos, so now I know it's not all just incredibly boring. Drmies I haven't clicked on the DocumentCloud links but I would guess they are primary documents that are not as helpful as secondary sources. The SPA was also blanking content on another page. A little aside between us two

Hey Muboshgu, moving this off of Bensweetra's talk page as I think it's aggravating the situation and they appear to have a bit of a short fuse. I just wanted to let you know that my intent is not to argue that mlbtraderumours is unreliable, only that at first blush it appears unreliable due to its name, its content/purpose as stated in their About Us page, and the (very underwhelming) consensus at RSN. My suggestion to run it by RNS again wasn't an attempt to be pedantic or add paperwork, I just thought it would be useful to have a new discussion to point to if others unfamiliar with the site see it being used in the future. Ponyo, I know you're trying to help. I agree that their fuse is shortened, and I think the warning templates contributed to it (including the ones I used). Definitely best to take further discussion off of their page. I do think they're trying to be helpful but they're not fully competent yet, not knowing how to cite sources in articles. Guideline and policy news

• Following an RfC, the administrator policy now requires that prior written consent be gained from the Arbitration Committee to mark a block as only appealable to the committee.
• Following a community discussion, consensus has been found to impose the extended-confirmed restriction over the topic areas of Armenia and Azerbaijan and Kurds and Kurdistan.

Technical news

• The Vector 2022 skin has become the default for desktop users of the English Wikipedia.

Arbitration

• The arbitration case Armenia-Azerbaijan 3 has been opened and the proposed decision is expected 24 February 2023.
• In December, the contentious topics procedure was adopted which replaces the former discretionary sanctions system. The contentious topics procedure is now in effect following an initial implementation period. There is a detailed summary of the changes and administrator instructions for the new procedure. The arbitration clerk team are taking suggestions, concerns, and unresolved questions about this new system at their noticeboard.

Miscellaneous

• Voting in the 2023 Steward elections will begin on 05 February 2023, 21:00 (UTC) and end on 26 February 2023, 21:00 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
• Voting in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey will begin on 10 February 2023 and end on 24 February 2023. You can submit, discuss and revise proposals until 6 February 2023.

Contentious Topic alert

Just a heads up, but there's a CT restriction in place at the Hunter Biden page, the enforced BRD or whatever it's called. You must follow the bold-revert-discuss cycle if your change is reverted. You may not reinstate your edit until you post a talk page message discussing your edit and have waited 24 hours from the time of this talk page message. I am hard pressed to see how a direct quote from a top tier source could constitute a BLP violation. Mr Ernie (talk) 19:59, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Mr Ernie, I'm not the one who made the bold change. I reverted it. Then you reverted that without discussion. We can hash it out on the drama boards if you want, but it's a clear BLP violation as the edit presents those words as a direct quote from the lawyers speaking on behalf of Hunter, but it was not a quote from the lawyers. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:04, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

I'm not one for the boards - just giving you a heads up because it's technically a violation. I thought you reverted it as a mistake, that you perhaps didn't look at the source to see that it was a verbatim quote from the source. That statement is not intended to be quote from the lawyers, but as the source's interpretation of their filing. That's not a BLP violation, just regular journalism. It was not a mistake as I have read the source. The source says Lawyers for Hunter Biden sent letters Wednesday requesting investigations into allies of former President Donald Trump who they say trafficked in stolen information from his laptop — a dramatic shift in strategy for the president’s son after years of GOP attacks. The reverted edit said In February 2023, Biden attorneys claimed that individuals "trafficked in stolen information from his laptop", NBC News did not quote the lawyers in that statement, but the other editor did quote it and falsely attributed it to Hunter's lawyers. Right, it's a direct quote from the reporters who wrote the article, not the lawyers, but was presented as a quote from the lawyers. I read the primary source letter, they used lawyer-speak to not admit the laptop belongs to Hunter. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:30, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

• Thank you for assessing the quality/importance of the new article on William H. Steiwer. You assessed it as a level. I thought it was pretty comprehensive … what needs to be added to get it up level. I am willing to spend time improving the article if you can identify the area(s) that need more work. Also, according to WikiProject Oregon assessment rules third bullet under green People bar … politicians who serve in the state house/senate should be rated Low importance unless they served in multiple places or had a leadership role in their branch (e.g Speaker of the House, President of the Senate, etc), then importance should Mid. Absolutely can't believe (yet somehow, not surprised) the LeBron story was both pulled and closed before allowing arguments for re-posting, but at least now there's receipts against posting the next football/cricket record to be broken, which will surely be proposed by the same individuals opposing this. Drmies, that they jump straight into adding that content with the proper citation template on their first edit and then following up on other pages does seem like sock-ish behavior. They're adding a news report from today, which might matter enough to have some sort of WP:LASTING impact, but I dunno. Yeah, I wasn't entirely sure if their use of the epithet was intentional or not either. I went ahead and removed it anyway just to be safe, and also because the firm's connection to Democrats is already sufficiently established with the mention of the DCCC. Alright--now the cleanup. These edits should, IMO, be undone, including all the content additions: these are sock edits and just about every account that made them was informed of Contentious topics--this sockmaster showcases the essence of POV editing, and we don't need to show good faith here. They're not here to contribute to our beautiful project. I just blocked User:Spyglass1, User:Tropicanaglass, User:Academicweapons, User:Varsity's horns, User:OleSulRoss, User:Grecomain, User:Chdegaulle. All have left their marks, which need to be removed. WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
• Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
• FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
• TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
• Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, Trainsandotherthings, Lee Vilenski, Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, SounderBruce, Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. Opposition Section - Nikki Haley 2024 Presidential Campaign Article

Hey there,

You undid an edit of mine that added an "opposition" section to the mentioned article. I do not think its the right call because the opposition (and the relationships between the candidates) in the '24 primaries is a key element in understanding Haley's campaign.

The '24 GOP primaries, and each individual campaign, is inherently motivated by the relationships between the key players. Additionally, In an election where each candidate (declared or anticipated) has adopted such similar policy stances, the true motivating factor for voters and campaigns alike are the personality, relationships, and messaging of and between the candidates. This is reflected in the reporting on Nikki's campaign, how her campaign may impact the overall candidate field, and the primary election itself (see: cpac v. club for growth situation). Haley's campaign announcement itself was controversial for her prior promise to not run if Trump did. So from its inception, this campaign has been morphed by Haley's relation to other candidates. This is true for the other candidates, too; the most recent example would be Trump's recent preemptory attack on Desantis. The opposition section's inclusion provides brief, fundamental background knowledge towards helping readers understand the context surrounding and directly impacting her campaign.

You say that 2024 Republican Party presidential primaries covers this opposition topic. It is nothing more than a mere list of people who have declared or are suspected to declare, with some polling and debate information. It lacks any relation to the substantial role oppositional relationships play in the development of the primary campaigns and, eventually, the primaries themselves.

My proposed section does exactly that, with a specific focus on Haley. Again, a huge motivating factor in the development of both Haley's campaign and the primary race is the relation and interaction between the candidates. So you are right when you say "This is Nikki Haley's campaign." and this is her article. My section belongs here as an informative segment of a catalog of her campaign. A key undercurrent of that campaign are things like attacks on other candidates, polling, and methods Haley uses to distinguish herself from other candidates; all of which my section covered. These are key undercurrents to her race because they matter to the campaign, are highly calculated, and speak to the strength, intention, description of Haley, her message, her reception, media coverage, and–ultimately–her campaign itself.

The key takeaway here is that Nikki Haley's campaign and its actions have been and will continue to be directly impacted by the opposition in the race. Therefore, my proposed section–highlighting a limited number of key statements from Haley and from others about Haley–provides educational, objective, and necessary information to readers.

I understand your concern about including content that may be tangental to Haley's campaign. I'm sure there is room for tailoring the section to ensure that each line is directly referencing all of the elements I've mentioned. But scrapping the whole section does not serve the Wikimedia mission statement to collect and develop education content.

I'm still legit not sure what you were asking at ITN/C, and thought better of trying (perhaps in vain) to get to the bottom of it there (think of the edit conflicts). But yes, WP:MANDY. A guideline explaining that denial is an implicit form of guilty plea without using those exact words. Is Trump a known liar? Yes. Does he claim to speak the truth. Yes. Did he falsify records? Yes. City, County and other local governments agendas are Reliable sources

You apparently think that city, county and other local governments agendas are not reliable sources, as you noted WP:RS here [5] Is that correct?

Here's a quote from the Primary Source section of WP:RS- "Primary sources are often difficult to use appropriately. Although they can be both reliable and useful in certain situations, they must be used with caution in order to avoid original research. Although specific facts may be taken from primary sources, secondary sources that present the same material are preferred"

The source of the official agenda I used from the Nashville Metro Council, which is having the meeting in the near future today is a "specific fact" as quoted above. In fact, your CNN reference got their information from this elected local government's agenda- the agenda I had cited as a source and which you removed. CNN is a reliable additional source, but so is this local government's agenda. I request that you restore my cited source. I like your placement of the text within the body as you stated.

Please, explain your perspective.

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

• Iazyges (1040) with three FAs on Byzantine emperors, and lots of bonus points.
• Unlimitedlead (847), with three FAs on ancient history, one GA and nine reviews.
• Epicgenius (636), a WikiCup veteran, with one FA on the New Amsterdam Theatre, four GAs and eleven DYKs
• BennyOnTheLoose (553), a seasoned competitor, with one FA on snooker, six GAs and seven reviews.
• FrB.TG (525), with one FA, a Lady Gaga song and a mass of bonus points.

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, PCN02WPS, and AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Hunter Biden

I’m not sure how the addition of a name in a cited source qualifies as contentious editing. Fox News or the New York Daily News or People all use the name and none are listed on Wikipedia’s list of deprecated sources. The mother of the child posed for pictures with her and allowed her name to be published as well. I think an argument could be made for removing the son’s name as well to be consistent. I object to the removal of cited material in this instance. But it’s on the talk page. Bookworm857158367 (talk) 03:09, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

I’m American and I am familiar. I do think there has been a fair amount of evident bias in the editing of this article by assorted editors. In this case, my main objection is consistency. Why list four children and not the fifth? The name itself is factual and not a point of contention. If the objection is listing a minor, then we probably shouldn’t list the boy either. Naraht, that's what I was afraid of. The draft that I saw was in no way ready to be on the main page, that's why it kept getting rejected. The last reviewer was wrong to say the subject was "not notable", but nobody gave the reviewer a reason to see that Critchfield is notable. It was rejected due to a misreading of WP:NPOL. If it had been rejected for lack of references, I'm not sure I would have gotten involved. But, I do think it was to the point where issues made more sense to be fixed in mainspace. (But I can see where WP:POINT affected my reasoning.)Naraht (talk) 10:26, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

Elizabeth Holmes

I wasn't sure where to make this particular post; but, seeing as you are a far more prolific editor than I (and an administrator to boot) I figure I'll make it here.

I thought it was a good idea to add the word criminal to the first sentence of Holmes' Wikipedia page. She is a notorious liar and lowlife. It's not a personality quirk to bilk investors out of about a billion dollars if a cursory Google search is accurate. It is a character trait. She is bad news. SpicyMemes123, this was a good place to post since I can elaborate more here than in an edit summary. The opening sentence Elizabeth Anne Holmes (born February 3, 1984) is an American former biotechnology entrepreneur who, in 2022, was convicted of fraud in connection to her blood-testing company, Theranos. makes clear that she's been convicted of a crime. As for your personal opinion on Holmes, I don't disagree. But, we only know what her actions are, not her inner state or personal beliefs. We should be reporting the facts without using value-laden labels. I should have included MOS:LABEL in my edit summary. I know that it's not "contentious" in the sense that she has been convicted of a crime, so it is factual, but its not ideal to reduce a person to a label like that, especially since the second half of the opening sentence lays out her crime and the rest of the lead provides more detail on the crime. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:13, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Your average business magnate doesn't "accidentally" commit a serious felony vis-a-vis fraud. About the Removal

Hello, 

I feel as if my edit on the 2024 election has been erroneously removed. There is large evidence of right-wing genocide against transgender people, as included in my edit. Moreover, the GOP has been targeting trans people as of late, and the Democratic Party hasn't. Guideline and policy news

• Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
• As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

• Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

• The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Miscellaneous

• Following a community referendum, the arbitration policy has been modified to remove the ability for users to appeal remedies to Jimbo Wales.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, of course, but I'm becoming increasingly aggravated by KOTS's long, whinging rants on WP:ITN/C that end up being four or five paragraphs long. I know WP:RFCU has been done away with for fairly obvious reasons, but I wanted to have a public comment on his behavior on WT:ITN to determine how other people feel about it. Umbilicus-fixated new user

Please take a look at [6]. Virtually every edit this new user has made has involved fixation on young women entertainers' navels, adding detailed information that is not of encyclopedic merit and not well-written. I am not comfortable confronting the person, given that I am avowedly female and I am afraid abuse will be forthcoming. Am I reading too much into edits like, e.g., [7] and [8]? I deleted a lot of stuff from the "Cultural views..." article that I am already suspecting will bring about a hateful reaction. Wrongful conviction of David Camm

Hello, Muboshgu,

I don't deal much with MOS, page titles and page moves (except when articles are moved to the wrong namespace), so I wanted to get your opinion on this recent article title change. I don't recall seeing other articles with the "Wrongful conviction" claim in the title although there is no doubt that the conviction this person received was incorrect. I was thinking that maybe the article should be moved to "David Camm Trial" as the article mainly deals with the murder incident and following trial but am looking for a second opinion. Ideally, this discussion should happen on the article talk page but except for a recent edit by the page mover, the talk page hasn't received much activity since 2016 so it doesn't get much traffic. There's an essay Wikipedia:"Murder of" articles that talks about this genre of articles. And Wikipedia:Naming conventions (violence and deaths) has a nice flow chart, but doesn't include wrongful convictions. There are a few articles that start with "Wrongful conviction of", no opinion on their notability. If the main gist of the case is that Camm was wrongfully convicted, then that seems like the best article title. Both of these talk pages receive messages from IPs/new users trying to communicate with the article subjects. I don't think protection is a good idea because the edits are not frequent. Matticusmadness, blocked for impersonating a bot. I don't know why the account would be made on the English Wikipedia if it's meant for the Vietnamese Wikipedia. There's a hard and fast rule against accounts titled "bot" that aren't bots. WikiCup 2023 July newsletter

The third round of the 2023 WikiCup has come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 175 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

• Thebiguglyalien, with 919 points from a featured article on Frances Cleveland as well as five good articles and many reviews,
• Unlimitedlead, with 862 points from a high-scoring featured articles on Henry II of England and numerous reviews,
• Iazyges, with 560 points from a high-scoring featured article on Tiberius III.

Contestants achieved 11 featured articles, 2 featured lists, 47 good articles, 72 featured or good article reviews, over 100 DYKs and 40 ITN appearances. As always, any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
