Place of birth after date

edit

Hello B. Hope you're doing well. Not sure if it's a rule, but is it okay to remove the place of birth from the lead sentence? I've been doing it for football and baseball for months. I just noticed only 5 of 14 water polo members have it listed there. Was just about to delete it and I saw your name by Sophie Smith. You didn't remove it, so I figured it's time to find this out. John. Bringingthewood (talk) 05:25, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Bringingthewood: Doing well. Thanks. I didn't remove it from Smith as I was simply there to add a hatnote, not looking at anything more. A relevant guideline would be MOS:BIRTHPLACE:

Birth and death places, if known, should be mentioned in the body of the article, and can appear in the lead if relevant to notability, but not in the opening brackets alongside the birth and death dates.

If one wanted to also respect WP:PRESERVE, it should be moved (and sourced) to the body if it wasn't already there. Best. —Bagumba (talk) 06:55, 13 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's great to hear. -- Yeah, I thought you may have been doing other things, I just didn't want to jump the gun. Okay, so MOS:BIRTHPLACE is probably the reason nobody ever stopped me, lol. I'll remove them and use that link. I can leave preserving things to someone else, you don't want me screwing around too much with an article. At least I can use MOS in the summary instead of 'removing place of birth' like I always did. If you see something I did wrong, just revert it ... at least it'll be from a nice person. :) Thanks for the info! Have a good week. Regards, John. Curry Olympic Achievement

edit

I wanted to discuss the removal of the Olympic All Star 5 from Stephen Curry. You referenced the NBA style guide, but that has no guide for international achievements. It does have specific things to exclude and say that medals should be their own section. In my opinion, this is a bit of an oversight as the all tournament team for the highest level international basketball tournament is quite a bit more prestigious than some of the NBA specific awards included. I added it there and to Victor Wembanyama as it was also already on Dennis Schroder and Nikola Jokic. On LeBron James, the MVP for the tournament was also listed. Boilerball1 (talk) 13:54, 14 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Boilerball1: Thanks for discussing this. Generally, I hadn't seen a prior practice of posting All-Star Five selections in the infobox, either for the Olympics or other FIBA events. Similarly for (American) college basketball, the NCAA all-tournament team selections haven't been listed. I don't have an issue with the notability of Olympics MVP. Regards. —Bagumba (talk) 07:22, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

NFL.com

edit

Please take a look at User_talk:WikiOriginal-9#No_way. I suspected this would happen when we removed NFL.com from the infoboxes, but I didn't say anything because I don't like arguing with people over every little thing that comes up. I have to pick my battles. Anyway, if we stuck to WP:COSMETICBOT, all the nfl.com links would still be in the infobox, so we could activate the parameter again if we wanted to. What do you guys use for height/weight in NBA articles? ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 23:32, 17 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@WikiOriginal-9: My understanding before was that 1000s of the links were broken and needed updating. The easiest way to get it back for "free" is to have the infobox programmed to get the NFL.com link from Wikidata (assuming that's reliable). Otherwise, editors will need to manually add it back on each page, pending consensus of course. NBA proj relies on NBA.com (WP:NBAHEIGHT). Template:Infobox basketball biography gets its link from Wikidata, because the site was always tweaking its url, the WP pages became out of date, but the Wikidata seemed to be reliable. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 01:09, 18 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

User:PlahWestGuy2024 just made a bunch of edits that I don't know how to deal with. PrinceTortoise (talk) 05:05, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@PrinceTortoise: I was generically going to refer you to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution or Wikipedia:Noticeboards, but I figured out your (urgent) concern, and blocked them. Thanks. —Bagumba (talk) 05:13, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for addressing the issue so quickly. Where is the best place to go if I ever encounter something similar again? PrinceTortoise (talk) 05:19, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@PrinceTortoise: WP:AIV (Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism), or WP:ANI (Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents) if it's urgent but not vandalism. Best. —Bagumba (talk) 05:53, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks again, and I'll take note of those noticeboards for future reference PrinceTortoise (talk) 20:59, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Omri Amrany

edit

Hey Bagumba, so I'm working on a draft for the Nowitzki statue in my sandbox, and it just so happens there's also some solid sourcing available on the sculptor who's made many statues of NBA players and other pro athletes. Interestingly, his wife Julie Rotblatt-Amrany is too. Anyways, the original article was apparently soft-deleted for being too promotional; are there any salvageable sources from the deleted page? Or should I start from scratch? Was wondering if it's possible and worthwhile to restore to draftspace. Left guide (talk) 11:23, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Left guide: Art is out of my expertise, but I guess the claim was its sources were not reliable or not independent. The prose was flowery and mostly unsourced. Here's a legit source there for you: https://web.archive.org/web/20160304071803/http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-10-19/sports/ct-spt-1020-blackhawks-statues-chicago--20111020_1_hull-and-mikita-statues-omri-amrany Otherwise, you can go to WP:REFUND. I'll leave it to the experts there. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 11:49, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

edit

Do you mind updating Harrison Butker to the new lead for me. It's fully protected, only admins can edit it. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 22:42, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@WikiOriginal-9: I dont disagree with your edit, but I'd be liable to face scrutiny for abusing admin privilege. Better to make an edit request on the page and have someone totally uninvolved consider if its truly uncontroversial. Of just wait it out. A bit rare that its fully locked for a whole month. —Bagumba (talk) 00:25, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
