Interview questions for the WikiProject desk at The Signpost
The Signpost - Interview questions Thank you for agreeing to contribute to the interview at our WikiProject Desk
for WikiProject Comics. The link to the interview questions is here. Your timely responses are greatly appreciated. |
I know that you said that you only work in the field of pure webcomics, which is fine, since we would like a voice from all aspects of the group. If you would like to, you may put this inside of the "Anything else you'd like to add?" question. Thanks!
- @Jamesjpk: Thank you greatly for being so nice, but looking at the questions and scope of the interview, I don't really feel comfortable "butting in". I just have nothing to do with comics, and only really follow the WikiProject talkpage in case anyone talks about webcomics. If anything, I would put undue weight on a very niche perspective and it just doesn't make sense to me ^_^; ~Mable (chat) 18:53, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
- Ok, that's fine. Thanks for considering! :D Jamesjpk (talk)
Evo 2017
Hi Maple, I would like to know if you are able to do an EVO 2017 wikipedia page. The event is happening this weekend and I've been seeing lots and lots of coverage lately. If you are able to do such thing, I'd be pleased. I've got a lot of time conflicts that make it difficult to watch every Top 8. Please enjoy your weekend. --ULTRA-DARKNESS:) 2 CHAT 17:24, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

- @Maplestrip: I've typed down all of the pre-event stuff already. So I don't think you need to create it. I built the page from an existing redirect. Actual EGS Wikpedia Page?
Is there any movement to finally make El Goonish Shive an article? I feel that it has passed the point of notability that merits a page. Thebombzen (talk) 20:41, 28 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Thebombzen: I always keep track of the sources for El Goonish Shive, as it is basically my dream article. I also am happy to create articles that probably wouldn't deserve them. But in the case of El Goonish Shive, there's just nothing. Checking Google News results, there are zero reliable sources even mentioning the webcomic. The only reliable source that has discussed El Goonish Shive in detail is Sequential Tart. There's also a little piece about it in T Campbell's A History of Webcomics. I'll be sure to keep track of any sources that may pop up, but until the webcomic passes general notability guidelines, I will always nominate it for deletion. Sorry, Bombzen ^_^; ~Mable (chat) 06:47, 29 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Maplestrip: Could this be one? Just popped up in a Google News search, posted just the other day. Oornery (talk) 07:21, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
- I've never come across that website before, which is not the best sign, and Google lists it as a "blog". But it doesn't look all that bad and might be usable, but it's still merely one paragraph. For me, I'd say we're still falling short on sources. Thanks for sharing, though! ~Mable (chat) 23:04, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

You opened this individual GA reassessment back in late June, and there have been no significant edits by other editors to address the points that were raised in it at the time.
Given that over two months have passed since then, and your assessment (presumably) remains that the article does not meet the GA criteria, it is probably time to close the reassessment and delist the article. If you need any assistance in doing so, please feel free to let me know. Thank you very much. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:48, 1 September 2017 (UTC)
How to expand a character's artcile
Hello! :D I have a question to ask. So I want to expand a character's article, particularly her development section, her name is Homura Akemi. And...sadly, I can't find sources on how the creators created her and all. So maybe if you give me some help on how to find such things then I'd really appreciate it! :D Sorry if there is some grammar mistake. ^_^ MadoMagiFan (talk) 15:31, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- @MadoMagiFan: I'm glad you ask! I created that article last year, and all of the useful sources I managed to find are already in the article, so I don't know if I can really help you out with this one. Anime-related articles are particularly difficult in my experience because the best sources are probably Japanese-language anime magazines. Wikipedia is relatively strict on what it considers reliable sources, after all. When it comes to English language articles, I tend to search the topic name on Google News, which tends to bring back a great amount of reliable sources. You could try to search for Homura on Google News in Japanese, though I have no idea how useful that would be ^_^; Lastly, you can always ask for help on the Anime and Manga WikiProject as well - maybe other editors have even better ideas :) ~Mable (chat) 20:41, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- Can I use sources from magazines? Something like this: https://wiki.puella-magi.net/Category:Magazine_articles MadoMagiFan (talk) 14:14, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- @MadoMagiFan: Yes, magazines are usually great sources, because the fact that these people have gone through the effort of printing and distributing suggests that professional editorial control is involved. I remember using this same list of magazine articles back when I wrote about the two Madoka characters, I just now remember, but I think there may be new sources/translations available. Feel free to apply these sources on the article if you can! I am following both Madoka and Homura, so I can look over your edits as well :) Be bold! ~Mable (chat) 14:29, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

Naruto Storm 2 plot
Thanks for replying in the video game project talk page I made. I'm curious about your comment regarding the plot of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2. Although the game's story mode is a retelling of the series I've been wondering if I should expand the plot a bit with a premise of every chapter. What do you think?Tintor2 (talk) 23:02, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Tintor2: The plot section was a lot shorter when I made that comment. It looks pretty decent now. Maybe it can use some expansion, but if it really follows the plot of the franchise as a whole, you can just link there. I do see the list of characters has been re-added, and I recommend removing it, per what I said on the WikiProject talk page. It doesn't really serve much of a service besides gamecruft. ~Mable (chat) 07:05, 27 October 2017 (UTC)
Sinfest webcomic
Any particular reason for gutting the character section entirely? I have reviewed a significant quantity of webcomic articles on wikipedia, and a character section is always included in the article. Your edit, although visually pleasing, has left out a major component of the article, and I would like to understand your reasoning before I alter it. The edit tag on the previous article was for notability - I think you have done well to make that happen, but at the cost of necessary content? The tag was NOT for original research or "cruft" - can there be a compromise here? Tim :)
Timmccloud (talk) 14:21, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Timccloud: I rewrote the article entirely using only reliable sources, so I didn't include any original research in the article. The Wired article does describe the characters to some degree:
However, I'm not one to really write about the fictional content much anyway, focusing more on the development and such. I do think the plot aspect of this article can be improved compared to what I did, but I've never been fond of "characters" section, as this seems like an angle on fiction that only fanwikis take. I hope that explains my reasoning, at least. ~Mable (chat) 15:59, 18 November 2017 (UTC)Slick is a a short, wanna-be pimp with a penchant for slam poetry. - I accidentally messed up the ping, @Timmccloud:. There you go. ~Mable (chat) 16:00, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you for that explanation. I might put it some of it back, that article in Wired is over 8 years old and shows nothing about the character development in the succeeding 8 years. I can't imagine a popeye encyclopedia entry without explaining who Olive Oyl and Bluto are and why they exist, not can I imagine a Charlie Brown article without mentioning who Linus, Lucy and Pigpen are without some of their character detail; so I do believe there is a place for character sections in the articles to expand on them. As for your mention of fan wikis, I do agree that many of our articles drift that way over time, but articles don't have context if all of it is left out. Thanks for your help in understanding your edit - I hope you have the page on watchlist so you can comment on my edits as well. Thanks! Tim :)
- Timmccloud (talk) 17:50, 19 November 2017 (UTC)
- I have it on my watchlist, so I'm looking forward to your changes! I have a tendency to be rather strict about these kinds of things. When it comes to Popeye or Charlie Brown, you would probably be able to find way more information, as books have been written about these series. When it comes to less famous works like Sinfest, you have to do a lot of original research (i.e. citing the source material) in order to get even rough plot details in. I'm not planning to push my agenda when it comes to Sinfest, though, so I'll be mostly hands-off from now on ^_^ ~Mable (chat) 18:48, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Is it possible if you could make a page for Victor "Punk" Woodley?
He's right now, the biggest name in Street Fighter V, was signed to Panda Global earlier this year, and has gained loads of attention from reliable sources throughout the year. It's strange that he doesn't have a page at the moment. He certainly would meet WP:GNG at this point of time. --ULTRA-DARKNESS:) 2 CHAT 19:54, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
- @UltraDark: He definitely would! He's actually the guy I have had on my radar as a good article subject for months. However, I don't enjoy writing biographies that much. The bigger issue is that I am going to be very busy the next two months, so I won't have much time or energy for it either. This is also keeping me from finishing the series of Capcom Cup articles, by the way... I may write an article on Punk next year, though who knows, maybe I'll suddenly feel motivated to write one anyway. Thanks for contacting me either way ^_^ ~Mable (chat) 20:19, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
The Awkward Yeti
Hi,
I'm a member of the Wikipedia:Typo Team and currently involved in a project to delete several thousand duplications of the word 'the'. The most common reasons seem to be that sometimes it has simply been written twice and unnoticed, it has been duplicated on both sides of a bracket, wikilink, or quotation mark, still other times because of a misunderstanding, and probably many other reasons. I originally thought that its duplication twice on the Awkward Yeti article due to the second reason, but I guess it's the third. In essence, your edit summary stated that a compound noun that starts with 'the' and is preceded the definite article 'the' should get consecutive 'thes'. However, in the English language, whether American, British, or otherwise, this is not correct. One gets deleted. For instance, it would not have been correct to say or write 'the The Awkward Yeti article' earlier in this paragraph, any more than it would be correct to say or write 'the The Gettysburg Address speechwriter' or 'the The Oval Office carpeting'. (You can also try saying your sentence out loud - the rules for spoken English are not as strict, but even when spoken, it's very awkward.)
I have rephrased both sentences so that there are still two 'thes', but they are separated. I believe strongly that proper English, spelling, and appearance are important for Wikipedia because these are just as important to its credibility and success as are the facts. Thanks for understanding, and if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reply.
I left intact the bolds that you reinserted.

Ira Leviton (talk) 18:03, 27 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Ira Leviton: Thank you for the very polite response! And thank you for finding a good alternative. As a "connoisseur" of somewhat quirky behaviors of the English language (as you may have noticed from my edit description), I am a bit disappointed to see the duplicate "the"s go, but Wikipedia's formal style comes first, of course! Thanks again ~Mable (chat) 20:36, 27 November 2017 (UTC)

And olive branch & holiday wishes!
I've caused this year to end on a chord of disappointment for many, but I hope that despite my mistakes and the differences in opinion and perspectives, and regardless of what the outcome is or in what capacity I can still contribute in the coming year, we can continue working together directly or indirectly on this encyclopedic project, whose ideals are surely carried by both of our hearts. I'm hoping I have not fallen in your esteem to the level where "no hard feelings" can no longer ring true, because I highly respect you and your dedication to Wikipedia, and I sincerely wish you and your loved ones all the best for 2018.

Check, Please! Episode List
Hi Maplestrip,
How would you suggest an episode list be included for Check, Please! (webcomic)? Perhaps a separate article? I disagree with your assertion that an episode list would qualify as cruft, but perhaps it does clutter the main CP! page. A citation may be formed with reference to the comic archive page. Lincolnnb (talk) 18:36, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
- Hello @Lincolnnb:! I'm glad you're interested in improving this article. The thing about a list like this is that it really needs somekind of independent notability. None of the independent sources that have discussed Check, Please! have given any detail on its "episodes", so why should Wikipedia? After all, our encyclopedia should follow reliable sources and not partake in what is essentially original research. Unless you can find reliable independent sources that have discussed individual episodes or have listed Check, Please! episodes, I recommend against writing such a list. This is exactly the kind of information fanwikis are perfect for, so you may be interested in recreating the list on this website. As for the Check, Please! article, it is actually on my radar to try to make a Good Article at some point, so I like to make sure the article satisfies Wikipedia's guidelines. ~Mable (chat) 22:00, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
esports
Hey Maplestrip,
My name is Rod Breslau (Slasher), a longtime journalist and caster in esports. I was talking about everything in my inquiry below with User:Prisencolin the last few weeks but he's busy with school and won't be able to do a lot on Wiki. I saw you as one of the users on the esports task force so figured I'd send you a note.
I wanted to inquire about the possibility about creating/editing more personal pages for notable industry leaders such as myself and others such as djWHEAT, 2GD, Thorin, Richard Lewis, etc, that I believe fit the requirements of being notable for wikipedia. Additionally, the inclusion of more players personal pages and/or to re-visit the wiki definition of 'esports as a sport' or whether esports players are 'athletes', which I believe was last debated back in 2011 and many things have changed since then (such as the government approving visas designating them as 'athletes'). Lastly, if we could change https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESports from 'eSports' to 'esports', which most of the leaders within the community agree should be the denomination, and the AP last year agreed with this. I think this small thing would be a big first step for the industry.
Looking to chat more, thanks!

- @Andyswish32: Thank you for messaging me! This is a really cool blog post! I've never known Patreon hosted such articles, so I'm doing a bit of a background check on it as I write this. Wikipedia has a guideline about WP:Identifying reliable sources, which is a bit complex. One aspect of it is that a source should be independent from the subject it describes. I personally think this source meets the subjective requirements, so I give it the thumbs up. Feel free to edit the article yourself, that is completely fine! Though I am very happy you messaged me about this, officially no one has "ownership" over their articles, so you're free to edit and try to improve. I'll be sure to read and check the changes you make, though :) - Be sure to link the source you use in the article using <ref> tags. ~Mable (chat) 18:53, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
- I asked a friend, and she said "Patreon publishing articles about works supported by Patreon is definitely advertisement." We do accept WP:Primary sources to some degree, so you can still use it for non-controversial statements, and my friend stated: "I don't see any problem with using it for Facts." That being said, sources that are completely independent of the subject are generally preferred. It's kinda complicated, I hope I'm not being overly confusing ^_^; ~Mable (chat) 19:32, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
- @MapleTalk: Thanks! I went ahead and cited the piece. Let me know if it requires any changes. Andyswish32 (talk) 18:02, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

Does Lusus (Homestuck) deserve an article?
I find the term frequently entering my life as an inside joke or meme. I like the meme as a reminder for the arbitrariness in many large scale cultural phenomenon. I notice the term get put out a little on the internet, but definitely not extremely popular. The term can express endearment toward a non-biologically assigned guardian or a gender-ambiguous one. Personally, I'd like if I could link a wikipedia article.
Perhaps, lusus could just do with a subsection in Homestuck, which lusus doesn't even have at the moment.
What do you think Mable?
Eaterjolly (talk) 04:35, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Eaterjolly: The concept of the Lusus doesn't really have any coverage by sources Wikipedia would consider reliable. I can't see how one would write an article about it without just linking back to the original webcomic (or worse, wikis) as sources. In fact, they didn't even come up at all when I was looking for reliable sources to use for the List of Homestuck characters. I don't think Lusi are that well-known outside of the Homestuck fandom, compared to some of the major characters (who also don't have their own article). I don't think it's a good idea to write about Lusi on Wikipedia. I recommend linking to Wikia when you need to explain the concept to someone, though I understand that it is way too "fancrufty" for your purpose. You could write a blog post about the Lusus allegory and link to that. I don't think anyone has really written about it that much yet. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 08:31, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
If the typesetting in infoboxes has ever annoyed you...
I made a template for infobox parameters Template:Typeset.
Have fun, and tell me what you think!

Hi, I saw you used this as a QPQ for your DYK nomination of Bongcheon-Dong Ghost. Since the QPQ was promoted, I'm not going to quibble with it, but in future please provide a review that explicitly confirms that the five main DYK criteria have been met. An optional Reviewer's Template is located above the edit window. GA articles must be checked against all the DYK criteria, as we have found numerous GA articles that have close paraphrasing problems. Thank you, Yoninah (talk) 00:31, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
- My apologies, Yoninah (talk · contribs), I'll be sure to be more thorough with the review I am in right now. Thank you for notifying me about your concerns. ~Maplestrip/Mable (chat) 05:44, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
