Your experience with Wikipedia so far

Hello Maplestrip,

I am conducting research about newcomers to Wikipedia and I was hoping to ask you some questions. I’ve noticed you’ve had some good activity recently. Is there any chance you have time in the next month to speak with me? If you are interested or have any questions, please email me at gmugar [at] syr.edu or leave a message on my talk page.

I hope to be in touch soon,

Gabrielm199 (talk) 04:28, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

Sorry about the pause in the interview. I just posted the latest questions. Thanks! Gabrielm199 (talk) 13:46, 27 December 2014 (UTC)
It's the holiday season - we're all busy :) There's no hurry, just do this at your own pace. I'm not going anywhere ;) ~Mable (chat) 08:24, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

  The Original Barnstar
Hi Maplestrip, just wanted to show some appreciation for the great work you're doing on some particularly important video game related articles! As much as we all love to write about the individual video games we enjoy, at the end of the day articles on Lives and Health are relevant to all of them, so thank you! Sam Walton (talk) 15:10, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you so much, Sam. I love these articles and to work on them, so I'll be sure to keep it up! I feel incredibly honored to get a Barnstar for it. <3 ~Mable (chat) 16:45, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Korra and Asami Sato articles

We're seeing people try to remove the Korra-Asami Sato relationship on via anonymous (IP-only) edits on a pretty much daily basis. I'm wondering if we ought to ask to lock down anon edits for a while until that stops. Solarbird (talk) 08:33, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

I expected that. It should become less of an issue now, or so I would expect, but protecting the article from anonymous edits might be an idea. Luckily, it's only a minor nuisance, but it ends up being a waste of time for everyone... I don't know what the best course of action is, feel free to suggest this on the article's talk page. ~Mable (chat) 08:38, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

On the blushing thing - I saw your comment that it wasn't necessarily obvious as a recurring theme, but it was obvious enough that I've seen dozens of photoset comparisons on Tumblr, so I didn't think it was super-controversial. I mean, like I go on quite a bit about on the Korra page, dialogue isn't the only text. Do we really need to have a reviewer point the parallels out? (And should this be on talk too? I don't know the protocol lately. I edited a bunch of stuff back in 2008-2010 but then got busy and haven't kept up until lately.) Solarbird (talk) 09:35, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Technically, it should be at the talk page (and feel free to move the discussion there if you want input from more people), but I don't mind discussing it here :) The issue here is that specific examples of such behavior are good (such as the blushing), but I would like those specific examples backed up by someone specific noticing them. I saw the blush, though I couldn't call it "clear" myself, and the quote that is currently there doesn't really tell me anything. It seems more like an off-hand joke rather than a meaningful sentence...
It could also simply be changed to "At this point, fans of the series noticed the relationship between Asami and Korra to have become more romantic," with some citation (I'm sure some reliable source has mentioned this, right?), without giving any specific examples at all. I think I would prefer it that way, as incredibly specific moments don't really have a place in such a synopsis, but their general change in behavior towards eachother is notable (and important) as long as a reliable source has actually noticed it. Retroactively is fine too. ~Mable (chat) 09:48, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
I should've stayed on Talk, now I'm looking in two places and am full of lolwhat. XD So yeah, back to Talk. But on first glance I think I like your new edit. Solarbird (talk) 10:23, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

My issue with Dubcity4

I don't know if you read all of it, but my issue with Dubcity4 is the recurring insistance that all of the stuff he doesn't like gets ripped out, that everything he says is absolute unvarnished fact and everything anyone else says is fannish lies. I have been trying to keep a lid on it (which is the other reason I wasn't on all weekend) but when somebody strolls in with that kind of dripping contempt (and hey, launches an edit war not stopped until the article gets locked down)...

I've dealt with this kind of bullying before and I don't give in to it. I just don't. Everyone else in this (I note including me, who started the scope discussion) has been trying to find ways around things, and he's still on nope it all goes you're all lying about your sources and even when you aren't lying they are and... yeah. If he doesn't launch another reversion campaign on this latest version of consensus (remember, he's rejected two other consensus agreements already), then I'm pretty sure it'll only be because of administrator involvement. Solarbird (talk) 19:01, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Looks like I can't evade this anywhere I go. I know the kind of character, and we'll get through it. Just try not to try to "fight" him too much yourself. Either way, we work with consensus when issues arise, so if it's his opinion against five others (after all, we currently have five people approving of the current sentence), he has no ground to stand on.
If you feel that you can't respond to him in a civil manner, no matter what reason, just don't respond :) ~Mable (chat) 20:17, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

"The relationship between Korra and Asami", as that is really the only reason why this character is so notable.

Hey, I saw the headlined comment in the talk at the time, but was busy... I really kind of disagree (and I've talked about the STEM-fields reason), but... can you name any other specific captain-of-industry archetypes in fiction who are women? Asami fits that to a T, and I can come up with one other. Maybe two, working at it. I can come up with a lot of men, from Daddy Warbucks forward, but... not really a whole lot of women. So I think that's also notable, even if commentators didn't really pick up on it as much as other things. (I'm not trying to start an argument or a debate or anything like that, it's just stereotypically a male role and Asami's rocking it, and I'm... not coming up with a long list of women in that role. Not a zero list, absolutely not, but... not a long one.) Solarbird (talk) 02:35, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

Haha, I wasn't planing to actually go through with such a change anyway, and I don't think you need to worry about anyone else doing so either. Those kinds of articles don't currently exist, and I doubt that there are many people that want "The relationship between..."-articles to become a reality. The title alone smells like fancruft.
That being said, going by the sources, most, if not all of the sources on Asami Sato talk about her in relation to Korra, rather than on her own merit, so I wouldn't oppose to such an article being made, if other people felt it necessary. I wouldn't suggest it myself (other than the offhand comment quoted in the title of this section), though. ~Mable (chat) 07:48, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't think you were (and there are sources which talk about Asami separately, I link to some of them - maybe I should go dig up some more), I just wanted that out there. There is an assumption out there that she's Attachment To Korra, and in a strong-lead type show you can really argue everyone is an Attachment To Lead, but I just think her independent qualities are important. (Having worked in tech a lot, and with all the pressure on women not to work in tech, I'm just sensitive to it. It's much worse than it used to be. Much worse. That's not article fodder directly but it does speak to why I think she's important on that basis.)
Anyway, I just wanted to talk about that a little, I didn't think anything was brewing and believe me I don't want to brew anything. ^_^ (At least, nothing is brewing here. One of the guys who tried to get the article deleted and came in saying Nothing Queer Happened In The Show At All Ever seems to be trying to get a thing going to delete Avatar-universe character pages generally, and is sniping again at Asami Sato in particular, over in the Iroh RfD page. That, I'm keeping an eye on. And people say queer erasure isn't real. Aheh.) Solarbird (talk) 17:16, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
No worries ^_^ I guess it's indeed somewhat difficult to talk about Avatar characters without mainly focusing on their connection with the lead character. Hell, half of Mako's character seems to be his relation to Korra, and Tenzin is this teacher of Korra, etc. But you know, I'm glad to hear that you found things in this sidecharacter that makes her important and meaningful to you. Asami is a good rolemodel to have :) ~Mable (chat) 07:47, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

RE: Grow Home

Thanks for helping with the article. I've noticed that in the development section, you have changed "The game is physics-based and uses procedural animation, which allows the player to 'adapt' 'any part of the environment.'" to "The game is physics-based and uses procedural animation, which would allow the player to adapt to any part of the environment." I believe the change you have made is incorrect, as the main character does not adapt to the environment. The player physically changes (or adapts as I initially put it) the environment however they like in the game. The quotation marks I put were unnecessary though. I'm going to go ahead and re-write this sentence. Thanks again. BlookerG talk 07:55, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Oh, I misunderstood the sentence then - it seemed rather vague. When I read that someone can "adapt the environment," I immediately assume that it is meant to say "adapt to the environment." I'm not even sure if the grammar of the original sentence is correct... Can't we change the word into "change," "shape" or "form."? There is no need to use the exact same words as the original source, after all. ~Mable (chat) 19:11, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Re: Bolin's Article

You're welcome. I'll work on Bolin's plot section next. I will leave Mako and Tenzin's articles alone for a while. It still needs improvement but if there's any way you could improve those pages, go for it!G. Capo (talk) 04:01, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Vo0

Hello Maplestrip. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Vo0, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not done. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sander "Vo0" Kaasjage. Thank you. Shirt58 (talk) 11:16, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Very odd question

Please don't be offended, but are you formerly the user InternetMeme? BcRIPster (talk) 22:42, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

I have never heard of said user. Though I suppose that if I was, I wouldn't say it, though I really don't know the person. Why did you think I were them, though?
Looking at InternetMeme's talkpage, I do notice we talk in a somewhat similar fashion, though it seems we have a completely different taste in articles. Also, don't worry about offending me ^_^ ~Mable (chat) 22:48, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
Just something odd about how this conversation is going on the Generations move request reminded me of the last time this blew up and I noticed that your account was created a couple of months after the other one was blocked. I was doing some other digging and thought I would just straight up ask for my own strange curiosity. Thanks for the reply. BcRIPster (talk) 22:59, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
I am sure a moderator could check IP addresses, if that makes you feel better. I think it's important to ensure the identities of people involved in repeating discussions like this. For what it's worth, though, my opinion that "xth generation of video game consoles" is the appropriate title for these articles came to me in the past half year when I first came into contact with them~ ~Mable (chat) 23:16, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
No worries. :) BcRIPster (talk) 23:21, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Thought

Hey Maplestrip. Just had a thought; we have all these (now great!) articles on gaming concepts like health, magic, experience points, etc. What do you think about making a template like Template:VG Industry or Template:Video games but making them part of a series on "gaming concepts" or something similarly worded? I think it could really aid in navigation between all these "in-game" concept articles. Sam Walton (talk) 08:48, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

I have been thinking about doing a footer template for a long time and would really like to do it, but it is hard to set a good scope. If you look between the drafts on my user page, you'll find two unfinished attempts. Category:Video game gameplay is really big and I'm not entirely sure how to divide it up into one or more templates. Do you have any ideas? Maybe it would work in the kind of template you're suggesting - I'm not really used to them. ~Mable (chat) 08:53, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
Ah didn't notice those! I think User:Maplestrip/Template:Video game elements is on the right track, but I agree that Category:Video game gameplay is somewhat overwhelming. I'll have a look and think about this when I have some time :) Sam Walton (talk) 08:56, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
If you could start a new draft with some of your ideas, I'll be happy to see if I can help out. As a firm believer that these are some of Wikipedia's most important video game-related articles, I'm very interested in improving navigation between them ^_^ ~Mable (chat) 09:01, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

Congrats

It looks like List of video games in the Museum of Modern Art is gonna become a FL based on the latest post. It must have been tiresome to work so much. Regards.Tintor2 (talk) 14:49, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Ah, it wasn't that much work - it's a short article and it's not like I had dozens of sources to sift through. Thank you, though! It was a fun process to be part of. Now let's hope that I can keep the quality up when new games are included into MoMA ^_^ ~Mable (chat) 15:18, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Intersex in media

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Intersex in media requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. WP:VG Request

Hi there. Just wanted to make sure that you saw my request to you on WP:VG.

Also, to answer your concern here, so we don't veer too far off on a tangent on the RFC, there wasn't a very good consensus with the naming in the last discussion. Prisencolin requested that I start up a formal RFC for more input because he didn't have any experience in doing so. We were pretty much on opposing sides in the last discussion on it, so, in rather simplified terms, if neither side of the debate was happy, further discussion is probably warranted. FYI. Sergecross73 msg me 19:46, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Alright, I might have forgotten some controversy. I really don't remember anyone really being against renaming articles individually per common name, but maybe selective memory or something? I dunno, either way, I'm sorry about that.
As for the Other things you said in your response on VG, I'm writing a response. ~Mable (chat) 21:26, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, I appreciate it. Sergecross73 msg me 21:44, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Derbian 2015 Super Mario Bros. speedrun.png

Thank you for uploading File:Derbian 2015 Super Mario Bros. speedrun.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Steel1943 (talk) 21:35, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Minh Le trivia

Hi Maplestrip, I noticed you removed my Trivia and See Also edit from Minh Le's page. I'd like to know what you would consider a valid source for all three things included in the Trivia section as I consider them worthy of including in the article (I can provide pictures, a link to the Counter Strike wiki page, etc). Your comment on See Also is fair enough and I will not be re-adding the section. I'd also like to know how I can transform a series of emails with Jess Cliffe (whose article I will be working on soon) into valid proof or valid references - you seem to be an experienced editor so I would appreciate some tips on proof, as you have already removed two of my edits and I plan to improve almost all articles to do with Counter-Strike and related subjects in both my languages. It would save us both some time. Kind regards, Paul benn darias

One reason I removed the trivia section is because such sections are generally discouraged, per WP:TRIVIA. The information you added can be useful, but you have to keep in mind that these are easter eggs referring to a developer of the game. It could be that one of Le's colleagues or even Le himself added these easter eggs to the game, which really isn't useful information for an encyclopedia like Wikipedia. That being said, such information could be used if it discussed by a reliable source. If a website like Polygon has mentioned these easter eggs, then it could theoretically be added. In this case, it isn't really about providing proof of these things being true, but about providing proof that these things are noteworthy.
Either way, fan wikis are never reliable, because the information on there could be added or removed by anyone. I really recommend you look into the list of reliable sources, not that you need to memorize it or anything. Not all sources in existence are mentioned in it either.
About the emails, I am not sure how to handle that either, and recommend you ask at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games.
I'm looking forward to see what you'll do. We can always use new editors ^_^ Wikipedia can be overly bureaucratic at times and has a lot of rules, but I hope you'll have a good time. Other languages can always use improved content too~ ~Mable (chat) 12:07, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
I wasn't kidding when I said that Wikipedia is very bureaucratic :p I hope one of the actions suggested will help you with improving Jess Cliffe and other articles, but it's generally not particularly easy. ~Mable (chat) 09:36, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of List of 8-Bit Theater characters

I have removed the {{prod}} tag from List of 8-Bit Theater characters, which you proposed for deletion, because its deletion has previously been contested or viewed as controversial. Proposed deletion is not for controversial deletions. For this reason, proposed deletion is disallowed on articles that have previously been de-{{prod}}ed, even by the article creator, or which have previously been listed on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. If you still think the article should be deleted, please don't add the {{prod}} template back to the article, but feel free to list it at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Thanks!

The article was nominated for deletion with similar concerns on December 21, 2005. The result of the discussion was keep (nomination withdrawn). An archived record of this discussion can be found here. As to its individual importance, I find it worth noting that the Cast Page on the comic's official website has no content of its own, but rather an endorsement and link to the List of 8-Bit Theater characters article.

@Kridily: thanks for the response. I wasn't paying attention when prodding the list, so I missed the previous deletion discussion. My bad.. I might try to AfD it at some point as there are really no sources to work with, but because of that quote I'll be sure to wait with that. How annoying that this Clevinger endorses us heartily ^_^; I'll see what happens. ~Mable (chat) 07:59, 4 March 2016 (UTC)

Editing in anime

To answer your edit summary question, the "issue" over what they can and can't show is rather vague, inconsistent and contradictory depending on the sources as well as the time period and even the medium. It's something that needs further research, unfortunately I misplaced some of my source notes so I intend to return to that section at some point. SephyTheThird (talk) 18:47, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

Ah, I hope someone will be able to figure it out sometime. My best guess is that the crotch regions of the children were simply perfectly smooth. Either way, vague contradictory descriptions happen, that's not something you can always help. ~Mable (chat) 19:21, 13 March 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Nisha Ayub

On 15 April 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Nisha Ayub, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Nisha Ayub has said she could be stripped naked and killed, but her transgender identity could not be taken from her? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Nisha Ayub. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Nisha Ayub), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
