Former NZ electorates

Congratulations on completing the creation of articles for all of the former electorates. My quibble is with your description of them. I think it is incorrect to say

"Kumara was a former electorate from 1881 to 1890."

From 1881 to 1890, Kumara was an electorate, not a former electorate. Since 1890, it has been a former electorate, although it is simpler to write about something that no longer exists using the past tense of a verb ("Kumara was an electorate from 1881 to 1890") instead of using an adjective ("Kumara is a former electorate that existed from 1881 to 1890").

Geology of county

Hi, why are you removing "Geology of" categories from their parent county categories and putting them into the "Geography of" cats? This doesn't make sense to me. DuncanHill (talk) 13:47, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

This was the way that Cheshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset plus South and West Yorkshire were previously categorised; with Geology as a subcategory of Geography (plus of Geology of England), so I changed four (Staffordshire, Shropshire, Cornwall & Devon) to have a uniform categorisation for all the counties.

I had previously looked at America and there the geology cat. of each state is a subcat of the geography cat. for that state. I have just checked Canada where geology is a category of the main province category, but Australia has geology by state (for the states that have a geology page, not all do) mostly as a subcat of Natural history of the state. Standardisation across category trees has much to recommend it, but I think in this case it would make more sense to standardise to having "Geology of..." as a head category under the area (county, state, etc). I wouldn't (as an amateur geologist) expect to find geology under either geography or natural history. We don't have natural history categories for most English counties - but we do have "Environment of". Both geology and geography would fit into "Environment of" categories, but can also stand as head categories as well. That is to say, for example, "Geology of Cornwall" would be categorised in both "Cornwall" and "Environment of Cornwall", as would "Geography of Cornwall". DuncanHill (talk) 14:18, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Yeah

Just cos the other states have geography of... doesnt mean we need to have that again - Borders of Western Australia is the sub cat - there is no need for parent cats to sit with child cats in circumstances like that - shoot on sight i say :) SatuSuro 14:44, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

They are bit of mess - our editors (oz) who did any category work seemed to have retired or gone to sleep on the job :( - (I suspect youll still find my tagging nz categories around :) - anyways - I can see what you are doing is the geology/geography interface - I had been trying to get out of the WA geography main cat - specific locations and sub-cattable items - so I think whatever you are doing is great and to be commended - but I just wanted to check - I also tend to tag for the project and state projects when they are identifieable in the names - sory to have disturbed - wow it must be late over your way :| SatuSuro 14:08, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Ok I think I spot one issue - over-cat - there is a policy somewhere - that overcat is an issue - when a parent and child cat are on the same page - I exterminate on sight - nothing personal - it is just that geology or geography of south australia is already listed as a sub cat of south australia - and I tend to see no reason why parent cats should stay... Satu, it makes more sense in such a case to remove the "geography" cat from the "geology" cat page, so that both geography and geology appear in the South Australia cat. (see thread immediately above for more discussion on this). DuncanHill (talk) 14:36, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

So Geology by state in Australia is straightforwar, and now just needs seperating the pages in Geology of Australia to the right state (including ACT?), but should the state geology cat. go to the main State category and/or to Natural History by state or Envirionment by state? Oh, something else. When you need to cite the book more than once in an article, you go about it the following way:

• The first time, where you produce the full cite note, you add a name to the first reference tag, e.g. <ref name="Wilson"> (followed by the cite details)
• When you subsequently refer to it, all you do is to use the following code: <ref name="Wilson" />

NZ rugby union players

Hi, Hugo. I noticed that you renamed the articles for three NZ rugby union players – Bryn Evans, Michael Jones and Ian Smith – by giving them shorter disambiguators. While this would normally be uncontroversial, in two instances (Evans and Smith) there is more than one rugby union player by that name. In both cases, I haven't been able to establish that one player was significantly more notable than the other, and so for both names the longer disambiguators are probably necessary. When there are two “Michael Jones (rugby union)” say, it is acceptable to have a disambig page called “Michael Jones (rugby union)” redirecting to two or more Michael Jones as required. But there was no such page for these players, and I think an acceptable alternative is to have a redirect from one Michael Jones to the other(s) who will of course require a distinctive name. Most of the New Zealand international players (formerly just All Blacks) are identified with “Joe Bloggs (rugby union) though some have others eg (All Black), (rugby), (rugby player) or (rugby union player). 3rd New Zealand Parliament

Hi Hugo999, I've amended the article further by going through all the electorates and recording all the changes that happened during the term. Some of the details are accessible through Google Books, but they use what they call 'snippet view' and what this means is that not all of Wilson is accessible. Thanks for helping out with some details already. In the process of working my way through the electorates, I try and complete membership details. I've done quite a few, and multi-member electorates (like Auckland Suburbs and Wellington) take a bit of effort. There are a few things that I'm not certain about, though. Are you keen to help? There are two levels of help possible.

1. A little help - Where I'm uncertain whether I've got it right, I could ask you specifically to check (or set up a stub for the politician).
2. Lots of help - Where you create stubs in parallel to me tidying up the electorates, with the info supporting my work.

A little help - I'm uncertain whether I've got the year of the by-election right for Theophilus Heale (Auckland Suburbs). The other thing that I haven't quite got my head around is all the additional electorates appearing in 1859/60 during the term of the 2nd Parliament - can you provide some details as to what happened, as well as a list of what got established when?

I've decided to add all the changes in representation to the first and second parliament, too. And when that's done, I'd like to add all the by-elections for the first three terms to the relevant list. So there's a bit to do (for me) before I embark on setting up an article for the 4th Parliament. Phew, that's quite a bit of an ask - I appreciate your help!

Thomas King

I've had a look at the Thomas King article and here's what happened to it:

• It was started as a stub for the politician who sat in the 1st Parliament.
• It then had biographical details added to it that belong to a different Thomas King.

There was much more content about the other person in the article, so I've removed all the details of the politician from that article. I've set up another stub (Thomas King (New Zealand politician)), based on an early version of the other article. However, there's more that you could usefully add to the article:

• birth year,
• death date (in case Wilson gives more than the year)
• apparently (according to the NZETC reference), he sat for Grey and Bell a second time

No, Wilson had F D Bell holding Hutt from 16-11-1855 to 10-10-1856 when he resigned, then Wallace from 30-11-1859. E G Wakefield 19-8-1853 to 15-9-1855, resigned. Alfred Ludlam 19-8-1853 to 9-7-1855, resigned; 16-11-1855 to 16-8-1856; then (4th parliament) 28-2-1866 to 30-12-1870, retired. Samuel Revans 27-11-1856 to 22-3-1858, resigned. Hm, that's strange. All sorts of newspapers reported Bell's resignation from the Hutt electorate having been read out by the speaker on 10 April 1858 (although it's always the same report): Otago Witness, Daily Southern Cross, Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle. This is just a selection - the report appeared in quite a few other papers, too. I'll keep looking through old newspapers. Schwede66 21:48, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Two Electorates

Names of May, Lusk & Hobbs added to Franklin electorate, but it looks as though Richard Hobbs was elected in a by-election (1878) as he was the MP for 1878-79 only. And Hobbs added to Bay of Islands electorate also Hugo999 (talk) 13:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Dunedin electorate

Hello Hugo999, I'm about to turn the Dunedin electorate into a formatted table. It would appear that all the members are in the list. What I've got problems with is the high number of by-elections, as I don't know in which order they happened amongst other problems. Could you please look up:

• Is the list indeed complete?
• Was there a by-election in 1858 for James Macandrew?
• There appear to have been three by-elections in 1862 (Dick, Richardson, Paterson). Could you please look up the date for those?
• There must have been a by-election in 1879 prior to the general election. Was that for Thomas Dick or William Downie Stewart?

What date/seat do you mean for byelection? In 1875 Larnarch, McAndrew & Stout were all elected from 20/12/1875

It says in the Dunedin electorate article that Larnach served 1875–78. If that is correct, then there would have been another 1879 by-election (the other by-election being for Stewart, but he replaced Stout). However, I can't find any evidence anywhere that Larnach did resign, so maybe the 1875–78 range is wrong and it should read 1875–79. Would that be what the problem is? I went to the library yesterday to have a look at this myself, as it still doesn't quite resolve things. Wilson wasn't on the shelf, but Scholefield was (he wrote the New Zealand parliamentary record, 1840-1949 version). And guess what - he has Stout listed as a member of Dunedin East from 1875–79, both in the electorate table as well as on the member pages. That does, however, not align with newspaper reporting (they all have City of Dunedin as a three-member electorate from 1875), nor Stout's biographies (Te Ara and DNZB). What do you know? Have a look at this. Apparently, James Paterson (New Zealand) represented Dunedin and Suburbs South 1862–66, and Dunedin (New Zealand electorate) from 1862–63. Did he clone himself? In the 1925 edition, he isn't shown for Dunedin 1862–63. Schwede66 06:19, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Suicides: nationality vs. country of occurrence

Hello—with certain suicide categories, I'm finding that you are consistently equating the nationality of the person who committed suicide with the location that the suicide took place in. For instance, you have twice made Category:Suicides in Germany a parent category of Category:German military personnel who committed suicide. This is not correct, since a German can commit suicide anywhere, not just in Germany, and many of those in the category committed suicide outside of Germany. This is especially so the case with military personnel, who often commit suicide on distant battlefields or while in enemy detention, etc. If you want to link the categories, it's best to use Template:Catrel rather than set up a parent–subcategory relationship that is misleading and incorrect. Parent Child Cats combos

Sorry but adding Mausoleums in xxx with a category Mausoleums - is adding child and parent cats together - and as far as I ever knew - we dont do it - any reason why are doing so? SatuSuro 13:04, 12 August 2010 (UTC) No, it is adding more countries to the already existing countries with category "Mausoleums in XXXX" (and parent Mausoleums); so that for each of these countries the Mausoleum category links to other categories for that country - Memorials and monuments in particular. I am very sorry to bug you but I am really bothered by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:19th_century_in_Russia - I cannot understand why you wish to over-categorise? 19 Century in Russia is already in the categories - by adding the extra categories you are creating complex parallel trees with no clear single line but extra inter-twining - what is the need for them? Could you possibly show me a link in policy or guidelines that back up your current additions - if so I will cease this. If you dont, I am assuming you are not au fait with the general principle of categorisation and the importance of simple parent-child relationships - what I see is a potential nightmare for someone in the future to unravel and cleanup - cheers and thanks if you can in fact reply with good examples of why and how it works the way you are doing it SatuSuro 10:45, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

Re Category:19th century in Russia, that category already existed and so did several individual years eg Category:1821 in Russia, Category:1861 in Russia. So I added extra individual years for 19c Russia, and the links via "Years of the 19th Century in Russia" which is also a standard category for those countries like Russia which have years grouped by century. Looking at Europe, about half of the European countries have years grouped by century, and so Russia is one of the countries in Category:Years of the 19th century in Europe ie with Category:Years of the 19th century in Russia. Some countries just have the equivalent of just "Years in Russia" instead (eg Yugoslavia, Yemen, Uganda, Vietnam; so Category:20th century in Vietnam does not include individual years eg Category:1999 in Vietnam); while some countries group years by decades (eg Zimbabwe) which is unnecessary but difficult to avoid after it has been started. Apart from that I was adding to Russia Year XXXX in Asia as well as Year XXXX in Europe, which was missing from many of the earlier years.

Re Category:Mausoleums it is a subcategory of Category:Monuments and memorials. I added Categories for Mausoleums in UK & USA where there are a significant number of them, and removed them from the parent Mausoleums category, ie in general articles don't appear in the parent AND child category (though there seem to be exceptions). But I note that some articles appear twice (in parent & child) eg Bibi Pak Daman is both in Category:Mausoleums and Category:Mausoleums in Pakistan, as previously put in by the author not by me - is this what you are objecting to for Mausoleums? Thanks for that - please understand I am always impressed by your work - its just that I have had encountered in the Indonesian project where it appears that parent and child cats occur - and I get very very nervous - when I see the additions to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Years_of_the_19th_century_in_Russia - at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category%3AYears_of_the_19th_century_in_Russia&action=historysubmit&diff=378812255&oldid=367711389 as if we look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:19th_century_in_Russia - it is already in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:19th_century_in_Europe... so we have one set of additions that are being repeated - I personally never add (and usually remove) such additions - as there is a convolution! if you get my drift - there are possibilities of entanglements.

No big deal in the end - its just my sense of tidiness of single stream/flow/trees of category links goes beserk where I see possibly complications of parent child cats sitting more than one place in a tree. Re Mausoleums, look at Mazar-e-Quaid which is in FOUR Mausoleum categories. But see also Category:Bridges in Maryland which includes all the bridges in subcategories. Saves needing to check all subcats as well I suppose - and there is a standard symbol to indicate this. And there are one or two more countries like Uzbekistan with two or three Mausoleums which could have a subcat "Mausoleums in Uzbekistan" though not for the odd country with only one? I've done a bit of reading of old newspapers to try and understand what was going on. It's described in some detail on Dunedin and Suburbs South. Would you mind having a look what details are recorded for James Paterson (New Zealand) in Wilson? Going by what I've read, he probably wouldn't have resigned, but was elected for City of Dunedin (in Nov 1862) and his seat got simply transferred to Dunedin and Suburbs South.
