Signature

Thanks for the note - to alter the look of your signature go to "My Preferences" tab and then go to the signature section and edit the look of your siganure in the box available. You can get an idea by looking at signatures you look and looking at the code used by hitting the "edit" button (you don't need to actually edit but it will show you the coding). Brookie :) - he's in the building somewhere! ^(Whisper...) 08:14, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Bad date

The bot operates on a different timezone. I've manually adjusted the bot's timezone to line up with the timezone the bot previously operated in, but now that it is up and running I'll try and line it up with server time. RM-bot minor fault

   Thanks for your bot work. This is what i added as the tail of talk:Elk (disambiguation)#Move discussion in progress (re a perhaps 9-months-obsolete message):

   The link above is correctly coded but (unhelpfully, since it is unlikely to fall in the middle of the browser's display of the WP-page's text, until more sections are added) piped to conceal the full page&section title, Talk:Elk#Requested move.

In that case, a section entitled "Move request" is now the first heading on the screen, and the heading

Please continue this discussion at Talk:Red Deer - the above text has been copied to there

could easily have fallen at the top of the page rendering before i started adding text in late sections below that link. Not the most confusing thing on WP, but since such sections start so short, and almost never get lengthened by responses, it may make reconsideration of the bot's wording worthwhile. I appreciate your efforts.

   Yeah, i should probably learn how to do screenshots! But it wouldn't help that much, and in any case, for now, let me try again: I don't know whether you mean the move notice the bot placed on talk:Elk (disambiguation), or the one on talk:Elk that it links to, and my concern is about the fact that the talk:Elk section title usually does not fall at the top.

   On a long page (except on the last screenful), section links work beautifully -- clicking on the link causes display of the targeted section heading as the first line of wiki-text -- like a flashing neon sign saying "start reading here". Altho my example is the end of a long page, the problem is equally clear, and easier to describe, on a fractional page with multiple sections: the user is given no cue which section they linked to, bcz the start of the wiki page is the start of the display, even if the link did specify a section. Thus the user is helped if they have read the target-section title in or adjacent to the link, instead of having been deprived of the info by hiding the section link behind the piping.

   The bot's link, at the time when most of its use takes place, points to the last section of the target page. Until the target section is longer than the height allocated for the wiki-text, part of any last preceding section will be displayed at the top, and if the preceding sections are short enuf, one or more non-target headings will be displayed. In the worst case, a non-target heading will fall at the top of the page.

   Yes, they can hover the link to see target info, or read the browser's URL field on the target page, but we should be welcoming the users whose eyes glaze over before they reach the first slash, and bad user-interface design justly invites the assumption by users that such user initiative will be good energy thrown after bad.
   If that's still not clear, please ask me a specific question.

the "Talk:Elk" page, in its "Requested move" section

but that's a minor difference where i both respect your autonomy and trust your judgment more than my own.

Timing of runs

We really need to get the bot running every 15 minutes starting at the top of the hour. Going several hours without updates is not acceptable. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:46, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. The several hour delay on the 29th is worrying, but it seems it hasn't been repeated since. The bot currently seems to update about once every hour, and I'm working on improving that right now. Updates may be sporadic over the next couple of hours while I trigger the bot manually but I'm hoping to get it to 3-4 updates per hour. --Hard Boiled Eggs [talk] 06:31, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

It is - cron job setup for 15 minute intervals - but some of the API calls were timing out. I think I've found a solution (to the updates, though not the API timeouts); we'll have to let it run for a few days to see how it goes. --Hard Boiled Eggs [talk] 08:29, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

OK, we will see how that works. One other old problem that I don't have all of the details on. If a user lists a user page and it winds up at the bottom of the list due to an error, fixing the errors can cause the listing to disappear for a few runs before it reappears. This does not apparently happen with regular namespace pages. You may want to keep your eyes open for that. Vegaswikian (talk) 07:28, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

To link to a different wiki, such as Turkish WP, put a colon after the opening brackets:

Found it: diff. The page was initially listed at requested moves quite quickly and without issue, but was then removed after that edit. I think you actually had the template substitution correct on your first attempt. When you substituted Template:Requested move, it includes Template:Requested move/dated without subst. This is intentional, and the bot doesn't expect people to subst the /dated template. The template's instructions may be a bit ambiguous here - or perhaps the /dated template itself is named ambiguously. In any case, I hope this answers your question. I eventually substed it because the fine print on the bottom of the template itself (as it's displayed on the talk page) explicitely says "Do not simply add this template to page-move requests; instead, use {{subst:Requested move}} or {{subst:move-multi}}." Yes, those instructions on the template are a bit out of place, because by the time you see them, you may have (as you had in this case) correctly followed the instructions. The instructions could be read as suggesting a second subst of the /dated template, which is incorrect. You need to subst Template:Requested move, as you first did, but not Template:Requested move/dated, as you later did. If you redo what you had done initially - just subst Template:Requested move - you should be fine. The bot seems to be otherwise operating normally. Edit: apologies if I'm not being sufficiently clear. When you first placed that requested move discussion, the code you used was {{subst:Requested move|new title}} (which leads to this result), but perhaps you don't recall substing that. That was correct. That added a {{Requested move/dated}} which is intended to sit there unsubsted, but you later did a second subst by changing that to a {{subst:Requested move/dated}} (which does this). The bot added the article after the first subst and removed it after the second subst. The template simply wants to make sure you {{subst:Requested move|new title}} and not {{Requested move|new title}}, and I'll try to edit the template so that it doesn't display that text if you have already substed it. RM refactoring

Hi there - you requested a note if/when I tried refactoring the RM page, which I just did. I created two new pages: Wikipedia:Requested moves/Controversial and Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical, and split content from the main page and the /Header subpage over to them, along with changing "uncontroversial" to "technical". The bot doesn't generally edit the Requested moves page in any case, except to add or remove that backlog template, and from what I can see that shouldn't be impacted by your restructure. Bad bot

This edit was clearly a mistake. I've had a look and can't find anything obvious that caused it. Might be a new request that's caused it but that's hard to track down seeing as how the bot hasn't listed anything. Dpmuk (talk) 14:01, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

This has happened before when Harej was running the bot. See User talk:Harej/Archive14#RM bot. As I understand it, it's not a huge deal because it always corrects itself next edit. The solution, as I understand it, is to make sure the bot never has an empty list. In other words, if the list of pages turns up blank, try compiling the list again. hare j 20:05, 26 October 2011 (UTC)

RMBot and talk page notification

Can RMBot leave a notification to the first pair of indicated move names as well as the second/later pair in a multimove? It keeps coming up that people frequently (atleast 40% of the time) screw up the order, meaning something like Talk:List_of_Fame_(1982_TV_series)_episodes happens, where notification appears on the page where the discussion is occuring, and not on the related multimove page Talk:List_of_Fame_(1982_TV_series)_episodes.

Thanks for letting me know about this. I can see the issue and it's something that RM bot could fix, but I'm conscious of adding any more "logic" to the bot. Could we try amending the instructions on the multi move template and the RM pages to see if this reduces the occurrence? RM bot suggesting a null move, perhaps because of quotes

Please help get "Occupy" protests moved to Occupy movement. I don't know what's going on with the bot. If you have the diff for the most interesting interaction I had with RM bot I promise you I'll try to think of a good suggestion. By the way, thanks for your hard work on this. Hi Dualus, I'm having a look now, but this appears to be appearing correctly on the current discussions list, in the backlog section. The listing that's appearing is:

• (Discuss) – "Occupy" protests → Occupy movement – Per discussions at Talk:"Occupy"_protests#'Occupy'_movement_and_'Occupy'_protests and cited there, "Occupy movement" has more than twice the Google News hits, and no scare quotes unless the word is being used to mean something else. Multimove request notification

So, users are still messing up the order of multimove requests. Someone added one to the destination talk page recently, so the notification did not show up at the source talk page. Another person added it to the second source talk page instead of the first.

It would be nice if RMbot added notices to destination talk pages (for destinations that exist and aren't redirects), and all source talk pages (for sources that are not redirects).

Another missing RM listing

The bot doesn't seem to have picked up on Talk:2012_Wikipedia_blackout#Requested_move either, although unlike the above missing listing, it's only been two hours... still, the template claims that it should be picked up on within a half hour, so I'm wondering if something is wrong? RMbot and improperly formatted multimoves

So... people are still listing multimoves in the wrong order, and RMbot isn't informing pages of the multimoves, it is informing the pages that have the move discussion of the multimove instead... people just don't read the instructions about which page to place first. I'd suggest the easiest fix is to just inform all the pages involved in a multimove that a move has been requested. Since it already informs the page where the discussion is taking place that the discussion is taking place, double posting isn't an issue as it does that already. (discussion at talk:source2; RMbot notice at Talk:source2; talk:source1 missing any informative notice and also not having the discussion section)

And as some people also only list one pair in a multimove request (source1/target1)... it might also be a good idea to place a notice on all target page talk pages as well.

Slightly crazy

When a RM is on a talk page and the bot insists on there being a new section pointing to the RM, right under the RM section. And doesn't remove that notice when the RM closes either. Can this be tweaked? Rich Farmbrough, 00:18, 27 January 2012 (UTC).

RMBot and talk page notification

Can RMBot leave a notification to the first pair of indicated move names as well as the second/later pair in a multimove? It keeps coming up that people frequently screw up the order, leaving a situation like that found at Talk:Anthony the Great, where the notification shows up on the discussion page, and the other page Talk:Saint Anthony does not receive notification. (I added the notification on that page)

RMbot and notifying destinations something wants to take its place

For things like Talk:General Nutrition Centers, where a multimove is not requested, but clearly, a displacement of a page to a second location, so that the current page can move there, there should be notification provided at the destination page. RMbot currently doesn't inform pages that exist that something wants to take its name. This seems like it should happen, since it is a multimove request that is improperly formatted. 70.24.247.54 (talk) 04:28, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

RM Bot bug?: not recognizing IPA signatures

• Examining Wikipedia:Requested moves/Current discussions#Time could not be ascertained shows that RM Bot seems not to recognize the signature in "discussed move" requests with an IPA-number user's signature. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 09:43, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

To be honest, I'm not surprised that the bot can't handle IPA -- as a result of the different libraries and tools used in the bot, I'm not sure I'll be able to update all the routines to support IPA from start to finish. RM bot suggestion - update wikilinks

I don't know if I'm at the right place, but could the RM bot update wikilinks after an approved move request?

Specifically, after the A -> A' move request has been approved, could the bot search through the What Links Here of page A and go through those pages (maybe just article pages? there probably should be some rules) and update the wikilinks to A'? Strafpeloton2 (talk) 23:28, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

I just did. I hope I wasn't the first editor to, but I don't use Wikipedia's email function very much Wbm1058 (talk) 12:51, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Well this is getting tiresome, no help from WP:ANI, WP:BON or WP:VPT. Surely there's someone out there who can sort this! There really should be a system in place to ensure users operating critical bots are actually active, to prevent this sort of thing from happening. MatthewHaywood (talk) 17:21, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
