Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Epeefleche

You may or may not be aware that the RFC/U on Epeefleche's approach to removing easily and obviously verifiable content has closed. Epeefleche essentially ignored you and I, and refused to respond to the main point of my criticism. The closing admin, also, has gone on to completely ignore your and my perspectives also in taking Epeefleche's side. Yes, there was a roughly two-thirds split against my position (keeping in mind that there was some circumstantial evidence of offwiki canvassing, including that Epeefleche has a background of doing exactly that), but that's not a unanimous enough reason to categorically ignore one side, and then to criticise me. This is an outright endorsement of the strategies and approaches used by Epeefleche's side, i.e., that wikidramamongering is an effective defence against any criticism and to silence opponents.

I no longer care. This is the final nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned regarding the culture at wikipedia. I have retired, primarily due to the admin conduct around the wikidrama of this RFC/U, and do not intend to return. There are other communities around the web that I have found which are far less combative and far less tolerant of dramamongers, and perhaps I'll see you there. ˜danjel [ talk | contribs ] 00:39, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Re:English dialect changes

Hi,

So, okay, how about the other direction?

My attempts to get blind users to discuss alt-text I've added to articles is a bust. How about if you compile a subpage, under your username, of a list of articles on which you want alt-text to be added to the images? I'll regularly review the list, add alt-text, wikilink, and asterisk or done-check the ones I've done. Then people can comment. I just want some centralized location for discussion, springboarded somewhere, where it's actually actively discussed. Of course, discussion may always break down into complaints from minimalists, caption-is-enough-ists, whatever. --Lexein (talk) 14:44, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

I'll be honest here: there have been very, very few times when I've read a Wikipedia article or page and thought "this really needs alt text". It is still engrained in me to skip over images and read the captions. I do notice and appreciate when alt text is used, though, and I'm willing to provide suggestions for alt text, but I don't really know what I'm missing, if you know whatI mean. Your changes to my changes

Hi Graham87, not sure why you made changes to the changes I made. It was several months ago, that I made the changes and if I remember correctly it was removing a few people that were under the Gloucester notable section. I think one of the changes was about Whoopie summering in Gloucester, she has never summered in Gloucester. Whoopie did have a home in Maine, and she traveled to Gloucester frequently as she was dating the owner of a local restaurant and she worked at the bar with him on occasions. I know this to be a fact as I spent many nights chatting with her about it. Again, I am a little confused as to why you go and change this?

Viewing history

I have joined Wikipedia because I would like to improve the National Federation of the Blind page, but I'm having a hard time getting my head around what JAWS reads me on the history page. Roy Daniell's guide runners

Thanks for your message regarding Roy Daniell's guide runners at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics. Here's a couple of sources to confirm that he used two guide runners, Julien Wicks and Dennis Fitzgerald, in the T12 marathon:

The Canberra Times, 6 July 2008, p23, states: "In Beijing, Daniell will have a second guide runner, Dennis Fitzgerald, with whom Wicks will swap halfway through the 42.195km race. 'When Roy is tired and struggling, I'll still be reasonably fresh and able to provide a bit of extra motivation to get him over the line," Wicks says.'"

The Canberra Times, 12 April 2008, p6, states: "For the first time in his career, Daniell, who has less than 5 per cent of normal vision, will run tomorrow with the help of two alternating guide runners, Dennis Fitzgerald and Julien Wicks, in what will be a trial run for the Games."

I know that this statement is already referenced, because I myself was the one who has added the original reference [21] a couple of months ago. So, a kid comes along and makes a handful of silly vandalism edits. I and another editor revert them, and warn her on her talk page. She immediately apologises, and stops editing. I would have went straight for an uncontroversial move but I noticed you may have insight regarding the title. I would think Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ought to be the article's title with ICANN as a redirect. This edit is sufficient for me to give pause and ask of your opinion. Is there a reason that favors ICANN as the title? If there is not, please make "Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers" the articles title, converting "ICANN" into a redirect. Cancer edits

Hello Graham87. Thank you for taking the time to look over the recent edits I made in some medical articles. While I completely understand the point that some of what I wrote may rely on case studies - there was other information that is medical facts and public medical knowledge, such as artificial embolization materials, microsphere information, selective internal radiation treatment facts (just to name a few). Those are real and current information that should be available for anyone to know what cancer treatment options are out there.

In response to your concern about relying on "case studies", please read this statement from the Chemoembolization article: "Chemoembolization is a combination of local delivery of chemotherapy and a procedure called embolization to treat cancer, most often of the liver. It is also being trialled at University Clinic in Frankfurt, Germany for the treatment of mesothelioma with some promising results.[3]" Not only is this referencing what I assume are case studies, but the link is also dead. It's entries like this one that give off a bad example for newbie wikipedians (such as myself). Screenreader reports

I was wondering if you could tell me what your screenreader does with the < s>, < del>, and < ins> formatting tags. I want to make sure that when I redact text, it can properly be read by screenreaders:

RE: recent missed edits

Thanks for the constructive and helpful criticism, I am still quite new to the process of wiki vandalism fighting, and still sometimes miss multiple edits like those which you pointed out.

My technique at present is to use RCmap to watch edits, and either undo, or Twinkle's rollback if I spot nested/multiple edits from the same IP I have only recently started using Twinkle for reversion, but still have a habit of hitting undo rather than rollback.

I've been advised on a number of occasions now to ask for rollback rights, in order to use Huggle or STiki, both of which require that, but have been slow to ask as I still feel I have a lot to learn, and don't wish to make life more difficult for the more experienced as I am just as likely to make errors with more powerful tools, as I am with 'simple' addons like Twinkle, ( Who am I kidding, I'm still finding my way around Twinkle, using cut/paste vandalism templates ;)).

Graham,

Would you please tell me what the following list sounds like?

Rose colors

• White rose
• Yellow rose

Does that turn into something like "List of 3 items: Rose colors, (bullet) White rose, (bullet) Yellow rose, list end"? Or does it treat the "Rose colors" item as a separate list, or as not part of a list? Thanks, WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:21, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Notifications and edit summaries

Hi. I'm wondering how you deal with the new Notifications feature. In particular, I'm wondering if there's a way that I (or anyone) can save you time by not having to read through pointless drama. E.g. If I write "User:Graham87 ignore this thread, you were mentioned but it contains only drama" - as part of an edit summary, would that arrive in a way that helped you? (Assuming that you trusted me completely...)

Summary: I'm partially asking about the practicalities of how you interact with Notifications. I'm partially warning you to ignore the tiresome thread at Wikipedia talk:Policies and guidelines#WP:PGBOLD where they're still arguing about who said what and who killed who, but someone mentioned you and linked to your username, which made me wonder if I could save you the time of having to read through the facepalm-inducing drama. Graham, I actually came here to warn you about PGBOLD as well. User:Dmcq asked about blind editors, I mentioned your name with a link, and Quiddity chastised me for it. @Quiddity and Frungi: While I have concerns about the accessibility of the notifications feature, I found it quite easy to use once I got used to it. So I would get an "ignore thread" warning through an edit summary, but, being me, I'd be more likely than not to just read it anyway. :-) I did get the latest notification and ... ugh ... what a time sink that thread is!
