WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our Champion this year is   The Rambling Man (submissions), who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

  1.   The Rambling Man (submissions) with 5072 points
  2.   Lee Vilenski (submissions) with 3276 points
  3.   Amakuru (submissions) with 3197 points
  4.   Epicgenius (submissions) with 1611 points
  5.   Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1571 points
  6.   BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 1420 points
  7.   Hog Farm (submissions) with 1043 points
  8.   Bloom6132 (submissions) with 528 points

All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

If you have views on whether the rules or scoring need adjustment for next year's contest, please comment on the WikiCup talk page. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2022 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Guide

Hi Ealdyth. I think this is the second time i've come to your talk with regard to your arb voter guide. First off, i'll repeat what i said last time ~ thank you! What i'm really here for, though, is to mention and appreciate the last two points in the guide, your soapbox about gender and, most especially, NONAZIS. I can't understand why gender isn't on all our minds much of the time as we edit, especially as we come into conflict/work together as a community; it can't help but be relevant. I have been vaguely concerned for quite a while ~ since i first learned of it ~ about NONAZIS, and recently that concern has moved to worry, though i've not really put my finger on why; your soapbox stand verbalises and solidifies for me, making it clear why that essay should never be more than an essay and, ideally, should be deprecated. So, at risk of becoming repetative, thank you! Happy days ~ LindsayHello 08:49, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

Umm, remind me...why is your name not on this page? Happy days ~ LindsayHello 08:51, 16 November 2021 (UTC)
I'm not there because, first, I would suck at it. I'm not a good temperament for such a thing. Second, I don't have the time. I quit as FAC coord because I don't have the time for that, so I don't have the time for much else either. Ealdgyth (talk) 12:34, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:23, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Thank You for your Arbitration Committee Elections 2021 Voter Guide

Hello Ealdgyth, I would like to thank you for publishing and providing your voter guide for Arbitration Committee Elections 2021 at User:Ealdgyth/2021 Arb Election votes. It has been very helpful and useful to me in learning about the pros & cons of all the different candidates with respect to their suitability for Arbitration Committee. It had proper detailed analysis and rationale on every candidate and helped me in voting informatively. However, there is one thing which I wanted to suggest to you is to use more graphical symbols/designs in sections when describing support, oppose and neutral for candidates (like most other editors who write voter guides do) as there is already a lot of text, so it just makes things a bit more easier to read and understand, that's all. Nonetheless, apart from that everything was good. Thanks. TheGeneralUser (talk) 01:55, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Ealdgyth. I liked your guide and I echo TheGeneralUser's thoughts above (except that my own guide does not state whom I would actually vote for). Your guide might well reflect the results. 52% of the votes were cast on day 1 of the ballot. You might find this full analysis of the campaign to be of interest. You are welcome to leave your thoughts on its talk page. Take care, Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:43, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Yes, thanks as always. No complaints here! Johnbod (talk) 05:16, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

A dilemma

Saying "slow as Christmas" no longer holds true the older one gets. I've long since started using "slow as molasses (in January)". But what about the NEW YEAR!!?? Well, all I can say is keep 'em coming because the option is unacceptable! Enjoy the spirit of the season - and hope it lasts all year - without the retail nightmare. Snow tires

Hey Ealdgyth,

How did you become "a passenger in a semi-truck driving through snow-covered Nebraska"?

François Robere (talk) 18:32, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

Husband is a over-the-road semi driver. His company lets family members go out with the drivers ... so I usually spend part of the winter traveling with him... the other choice is to stay in snow-covered Wisconsin for four months. I find the excuse to travel with him is fun and exciting. We're taking a load from WI to CA right now... pipes for ... I don't know what the heck they are going into but something in San Mateo, CA. Roads are clear, it's just snowy. Pretty. Donner Pass tomorrow! Ealdgyth (talk) 18:54, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
