Curved lens

I fixed all of the double redirect pages, i.e. pages redirecting to either convex lens or concave lens, so that they now redirect to curved lens. There are a bunch of other pages linking to the latter two articles. Can you fix those links? (Go to curved lens and click on "what links here".) Michael Hardy 17:48, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it's better not to "fix" links that redirect, if the redirect page is a better name for the thing. That way, the link still works in the future if pages are reorganized. In this case, links to "convex lens" and "concave lens" are much preferable to direct links to curved lens (particularly since the latter page is not likely to exist in its current form for very long). Redirects are fine. There is no reason in general to pipe links to avoid them. --Srleffler 18:01, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but i am not changing the link title, rather than make convex lens [[curved lens, I make convex lens the title and curved lens the page. i.e. convex lens. Please do not do this. The article curved lens is not going to stay at that title for long. See talk:curved lens. If you change all those links, someone else is just going to have to change them again. If you leave them as links to convex lens and concave lens, they will work just fine, whatever name the curved lens article ends up with. There is no need to pipe links to eliminate redirects. I see that you're worried someone might delete convex lens or concave lens. That's the wrong thing to worry about. Noone should delete those articles without fixing the links to them. Anyway, thanks for the effort. I know you were trying to help out. By the way, the page Wikipedia:Proposed mergers is not a "pages that need to be merged" list. That page is used for marking controversial merge proposals—ones that really need to be discussed first. Most merges are never posted there. The main place to find merge proposals is Category:Articles to be merged, which is automatically filled with articles that have one of the {{merge}} tags on them. Typically articles should sit in that state for five days or so after the merge tags are applied, to allow time for discussion or objections. If a merge is obvious and uncontroversial, it's OK to just go ahead and do it without waiting for discussion though.--Srleffler 21:42, 19 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Could I respectfully suggest you withdraw your RfA. There is almost no chance it will pass as you don't have enough experience for us to adequaltey judge you. I should also note that your request is malformed (you forgot to zero out the tally and didn't sign the acceptance) so could well be removed by an admin. Mississippi River pollution

Thanks for your recently contributed paragraph about pollution in the Mississippi River. But, if you haven't noticed, I had to remove it. The text was too obviously copied from elsewhere, even with the minor rearrangement. You can take all the information you want from elsewhere and use it to write your own text from scratch. But simple modification of others' text is still a copyright infringement. There were other problems with the content, too, that I've outlined on that article's text page. Those kinds of statements, particularly, really require hard data to back them up. And referencing the page from which they were copied, unsourced, is not a credible citation. However, some the links on that original page look promising as sources of info for a good paragraph. Maybe you could take another stab at it. Personally, I don't believe an edit count is what makes a good admin, but the value of their edits is more important, which is why I supported you. Concerning mediation

Hi, there! I'm sorry I took so long to respond to your question on my talk page. Currently I just informally mediate as a member of the Mediation Cabal, and anyone could do so as well. If you are interested in informally mediating cases (I try not to label us as 'mediators', but 'informal mediators' as official mediators are from the Mediation Committee), you are more than welcome to try your hand at new cases in our case list that haven't been looked at, and you can feel free to add yourself to the list of cabalists. Anyway, before you try to mediate a case, it may be a good idea to look at Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Suggestions for mediators for some helpful advice, and I cannot recommend enough for you to seek out help at any time if you need it. Looking at the article, however, it contains many spelling and grammatical errors and is in need of significant improvement and wikification. Caroline Island FAC

Thanks for your comments on my FAC for Caroline Island. However, it's difficult for me to address your concerns if you aren't specific with your comments. You mention that some of the metric/imperial conversions are "approximately or inaccurately." The reasons that some of the figures may appear approximate is that the original measurements are approximate. Sources disagree, for instance, on the precise north-south dimension of the island, which I have quoted as "9 km (6 mi)" -- I have done so because then both units have the same degree of precision (significant figures). Likewise, the maximum elevation of the islands above sea level (6 meters) is an approximate figure and does not warrant a precise conversion (which is why I used the round figure of 20 feet rather than 19.7, as you have done.

Furthermore, I believe that your attempts to "correct" my area conversions are also somewhat misguided. 1.04 km^2, for instance, is actually equal to 0.40 mi^2, as can be verified by Google's calculator tools.

I believe that your changes actually decrease the accuracy of the article, and therefore request that you revert them to my original figures. -- Seth Ilys 19:36, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Little devil

Heya! The little devil on the left was made with a 3D modeller/renderer/animator package called Cheetah3D, which unfortunately is only available for Mac OS X. It was one of the first things I ever made, but unfortunately I don't really have the time to do that kind of thing anymore, so it was also one of the last. :(

If you're running something other than OS X, you might like to check out Blender, which is much more powerful but also (in my experience) a little harder to use. Aside from that, I'm not really sure what you could try, since Cheetah is one of those nice little applications for which there doesn't seem to be any equivalent. Yeah, I've always found 3D graphics to be one of those things that can be really hard to get into. The image there only took an hour or two to make with literally zero experience, because it's really just five spheres stuck together - most of the hard work was actually done in Photoshop, making it look slightly less horrible.

Welcome, Daniel 123, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

To answer your second question, it's actually pretty easy to have show/hide sections on the screen. The most basic way to do it is this:

I've placed the above in a table to make it easy to use, but it doesn't need to be in a table of its own - the basic functionality begins with the first "div" tag, and ends with the last. Administrator intervention against vandalism

Hi, Daniel. I noticed you've been reporting vandals to WP:AIV. While anti-vandal efforts by regular users are very important, some of the vandals you've been reporting have only made one act of vandalism and haven't been warned. After you've reverted vandalism, go to his/her user talk page warn the vandal with an appropriate warning template. Usually I start with {{Test1}} or {{Test2}}. When vandals have received a {{Test3}} or {{Test4}} warning, they're ready to be reported on AIV. Regards, -- Steel 23:02, 16 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

You've got nothing to apologise for, it was a minor issue which you're now aware of. One last thing, when you report them, use the IPvandal template. For example: {{IPvandal|ipaddressgoeshere}}. I usually find it helps a lot to leave a note. Always leave the {welcome} first, then the notice. My experience has been that they're less likely to recreate it. Also, if it's an obvious autobio based on the names, and their userpage is a redlink, I'll move it to their user page and tag the article for delete as a {db-rediruser}. I am delighted you would like to co-found the anti-vandal group. I have let it go lately because of a lack of interest, but I think we will now be able to get it up and running again. I think this group should be popular because it is slightly different to anything else on Wikipedia, as it aims to preempt attacks on voulnerable pages by watching them, so reverts can be done more speedily! Hi! I notice that you recently blanked your first editor review (which was humorously reverted by AntiVandalBot :) ), and requested a new one. There's nothing wrong with that, but I'd like to suggest a better way of doing things: I was considering making these changes myself, but I decided to leave that to you if you think it's worth it.

  • I suggest firstly that you revert back to the very last version of your first review before you blanked it, to leave it in its final state for historical reference. This can be very helpful for future reviewers to see how it went, and generally just makes life easier.
  • On top of that, it'd be helpful to link to that first review in your new one, so people are aware of the comments you received last time (even if there weren't very many of them). If you don't revert back to the final version, you should at least use this link to it.
  • Finally, the names you chose for each review made my brain hurt. I think it'd be best if you move your second review to Wikipedia:Editor review/Daniel 123 (2), and then move your original to Wikipedia:Editor review/Daniel 123 (over-writing the original page). This will make it so much easier to keep track of everything, and is guaranteed to prevent peoples' brains exploding. :)

Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!

Well, wow. Where to start. First, from the page you quoted, notice the this is a guideline part, it's not policy. I have no intention of changing my sig untill it is shown to be demonstrably undesireable while editing pages. Second of all, focus on issues that matter. This is an encyclopedia, and that should be it's primary purpose. I notice the majority of your contribs are reversions of vandalism, talkpage and user-spacve edits. Funny, because the next message he gave me told me to go die, and accused the image in the sig of breaking his monitor. Theres nothing wrong with reversions and userspace edits, no, not untill the becaome the majority of a users contribs, then it raises an issue. My response was perfectly civil, I did not insult, nor make fun of the user, I pointed out things that would make him an asset to the wiki. Daniel was correct in pointing you out, AKMask, but I agree you were civil to the point where you commented about his edits which were not part of it. He was also wrong to tell you to die (he did cross it out) and your image is so small I don't know how it could have made much affect at all. I'm not going to start an RfC over one comment. "Back off the pseudo-policing" is rude and dismissive. It in no way justifies the extreme reaction of Daniel 123, of course, although it may help to remember that he's eleven and probably thought he was being funny. Concordia Newsletter

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

Help out now!

  • Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
  • Give people the Civility Barnstar.
  • Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
  • Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
  • Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

Decision Making

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

New 10,000 Challenge for Canada

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Canada like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Canada but fuelled by a contest such as The North America Destubathon to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. I would like some support from Canadian wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile!
