Seeking advice(from an expert) on how to create a good article

Hi Chris,

I'm a wikipedian interested in getting an article to good article status that is related to the field of "industrial-organizational psychology". Tips on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Also, where is the best place to get some 'Angels on horseback'?

Thanks Xyzbb1253 (talk) 20:57, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

I have no idea! I do little work here and there, but gather all the information you can and try and cover everything like a good academic paper - but written in an encyclopedic tone and you should have a GA or a substantial article. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 05:57, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Zrinski Battalion and Battle of Kupres (1992) GARs

Hi! I'm not in a particular hurry, but I thought to check with you if there's anything other than the issues already addressed in Talk:Zrinski Battalion/GA1 and Talk:Battle of Kupres (1992)/GA1 that need be done since neither of the two GARs saw no activity after I signalled there that I believe I have addressed your concerns a couple of weeks ago. Once again, thanks for your patience and understanding regarding delays in my responses to your review. Cheers--Tomobe03 (talk) 12:05, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Page merge help

I need help with the logistics of making a character list for the fictional characters of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo, Power Rangers Turbo, and Power Rangers in Space because right now there are a shitload of crufty articles and one oddly named character list that I used to host a major character despite the page's title being "minor characters". Also because Tommy Oliver got sent to AFD by a perennial banned user's sleeper sockpuppet. I don't even know what the page's title should be because List of Power Rangers characters has existed for some time as a list of every single name and there are characters that span each of those titles I listed.—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 13:24, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1.   Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2.   Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3.   WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. I wanted you to know that a vandal changed the code on the talk page, effectively promoting it to GA. I have since reverted to the older version but Legobot already delivered the pass mesage to Sirmouse. I contacted Sirmouse to let them know what happened. The GA is back to "on-hold" status. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:40, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Probably not a vandal, but to be fair, the length of the article is a major issue independent of all the 404s. At least I can be tranquil on the length part, but not the numerous broken references. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 04:32, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

You seem to know more about the issue than I do. This is somewhat disturbing. Hello Chris

An IP user invited me to review a page today and I see you have edited it in the past. Logan River Academy is the story and I see for the most part a lot of negative publicity involving the place but it is all from unaccredited sources. I was just wondering if you had found anything as the story reads like it was created by the critics and it really biased. LMK WPPilot talk 02:09, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Honestly, I just did general fixes on it. That page is something I've never been involved with in a fact-checking capacity. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 04:22, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Ingleton, North Yorkshire may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Bleach GA

Are you seriously considering a GA nomination when there's a consensus to merge it back into Bleach (manga)?—Ryūlóng (琉竜) 00:18, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

I got work to do and there is no consensus. Please let me work in peace as I've let you do so. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 00:24, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
I agree there is no consensus to merge it back again, nor is that really likely to ever happen. The GA nomination will bring more attention to the article, so hopefully enough others will comment to just close this merge discussion and be done with it. Dream Focus 04:23, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for the ping thank you CG. Unfortunately it looks like the editor added the cat to a little over a hundred articles today. It is time for me to go to sleep so if you are in the mood (which I would fully understand if you are not) to remove the cat from articles where it doesn't belong it would be a help. Sadly this is not the first time this editor has done this sort of thing. I don't think it is done with malicious intent but there are competence problems. Ah well cheers to you and enjoy your upcoming weekend. MarnetteD | Talk 04:51, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Move of Little Battlers eXperience

Hello!

I see you have merged Little Battlers eXperience with "Danball Senki", which is probably a good job done - thanks. However, I suggest that the title of this article really should be Little Battlers eXperience. This is the (English) title by which this appears to be known in the West, with the advantage that it means something. The original Japanese title (romanised) is Danbōru Senki: see for example the Anime News links, which always gives both the English and original titles. However, the name on this page, viz. "Danball Senki", is simply an erroroneous attempt to romanise the Japanese -- as far as I know the only cited evidence for it is the registered domain name www.danball-senki.jp/. But this means nothing, other than the office worker given the job of registering a domain had to choose a string of letters vaguely resembling Danbōru Senki - and guessed that the bōru bit was the same as the word "ball" (it isn't: it's "board", in an old representation, when katakana was chosen to resemble the sound, rather than the spelling). At one stage I added an explanation of the origin of the name, which was deleted (with threatening language) by someone who thought they owned the page, so I gave up. But now that the two pages are combined, I really think the English title would be better. If you agree, perhaps we can just move it back; if you disagree, or are undecided, perhaps we should start a "rename request" (or whatever it is; I'm not very up on the mechanics of this stuff) to discuss moving it. (Please reply here!) Imaginatorium (talk) 05:04, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Little Battlers eXperience is a stylization so I moved it to Little Battlers Experience per the MOS. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 05:08, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
Great! I will try to do some tidying up on the article (not that I know anything about it, except being able to read Japanese). Incidentally, the Episode list table is being pushed below the (long) infobox: is there an easy, standard way to fix this? Imaginatorium (talk) 05:21, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
I've never liked long infobox chains that do that. You could remove them or comment them out for now. I'd start with the video games since splitting the episode list off doesn't really amount to much. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 14:41, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Move reverted.

Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Your bold move of Kiki's Delivery Service has been reverted because an editor has found it to be controversial. Per Wikipedia:Requested moves, a move request must be placed on the article's talk page, and the request be open for discussion for seven days, "if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested". If you believe that this move is appropriate, please initiate such a discussion. Please note that moving a page with a longstanding title and/or a large number of incoming links is more likely to be considered controversial, and may be contested.

Why are you templating the regulars? I didn't move it to (1989 film), but that is probably the most accurate name. The disamb was fine and it is needed to distinguish the films, but the base I believe did go to the proper title and the action represents nothing. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 16:06, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
Greetings! This is an informative template, not a "warning" template, and it makes it easier to concisely inform you of the action taken. Per WP:MALPLACED, we don't redirect a "Foo" title to a "Foo (disambiguation)" title, so the disambiguation page would need to be moved to Kiki's Delivery Service anyway, which requires a determination that the existing content was not the primary topic of the title. In this case, it does not appear that the various meanings of the term are unrelated, per WP:DABCONCEPT, but are instead adaptations of the same work. In that case, there would be no need for a "disambiguation" page, but for a page listing adaptations of the original work. bd2412 T 16:54, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
I stand corrected. Thanks. How do we fix the page though? ChrisGualtieri (talk) 04:04, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
It depends on the situation. The first thing to determine is whether one of the topics is the primary topic of the term, generally either the original work or the best known adaptation. If none of them is, then what you have is a franchise, like Sailor Moon, for which the title is an article on the franchise covering the core elements that are expressed throughout the work. bd2412 T 13:42, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Is Connecticut a country?

As a Singaporean reading Congress Street Bridge (Connecticut), I almost thought so. Awaiting your followup on Talk:Administrative law in Singapore/GA1‎, Talk:Chan Hiang Leng Colin v. Public Prosecutor/GA1, Talk:Exclusion of judicial review in Singapore law/GA1, Talk:Internal Security Act (Singapore)/GA1‎ and Talk:Representative democracy in Singapore/GA1. Thanks for spending so much time and effort to review the Singapore law nominations! --Hildanknight (talk) 09:49, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Haha, the article is sorta like any bridge in Singapore - it doesn't even have its own full name, but it was historic until it was demolished and is currently under preparations to be replaced. Wikipedia is not just about matters of national importance and I combed through every record I could find on this bridge - but as you know, there are thousands of bridges in the state. Only a handful are truly notable though. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 15:59, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
In my opinion, the first mention of a place (whether a town, bridge or building) should always mention its country, except when very obvious from context. Do not assume that English Wikipedia readers would know that Connectiut is a state of the USA. Thanks for following up on the reviews and passing Chan Hiang Leng Colin v. Public Prosecutor‎. --Hildanknight (talk) 16:44, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
The naming of articles is specific, so there is no need to be "Congress Street Bridge (Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States)" or anything so specific. Though I could fix the lead to be more specific. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 17:04, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
Yes, I meant the lead section, not the article name itself. I see this has been done. Thanks! I have eliminated the redundancies in Exclusion of judicial review in Singapore law and the professor has responded to your concerns over inline citations. --Hildanknight (talk) 17:09, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
Some issue with WP:MINREF, but its not a big deal. I tend to cite every single statement and sentence in my articles - for myself and other readers to quickly and easily fact check. I don't hold others to the same standard simply because its not feasible at a certain point, but I am far from the most prevalent referencer. I like doing articles on infrastructure - they aren't contentious by nature. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 17:14, 14 March 2014 (UTC)
To help counter systemic bias, have you considered writing GAs about infrastructure in other countries? Sengkang was a prolific writer of Singapore infrastructure DYKs, some of which I have nominated for GA. I believe all concerns raised at Talk:Exclusion of judicial review in Singapore law/GA1‎ have been addressed and we are waiting for you to continue the review at Talk:Representative democracy in Singapore/GA1. For the other two reviews, I am slowly, but surely, working on the issues. --Hildanknight (talk) 05:14, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
Sorry! I'll get to them tomorrow for sure. The main issue is access to sources. I just recently pulled documents that show my little bridge article actually consist of 4 bridges and the vast majority of my material is on the third bridge. Enough that I might actually need to do a separate article on that historical bridge alone to give it a proper coverage. Lovely note, the first two are very obscure. So obscure that the book from the Department of Transportation failed to mention the first! Being on Wikipedia has made me realize that books aren't reliable as you'd think they should be - my research in any interest has shown me that even major omissions exist in the best of sources. If you provide the sources, I'll provide the work. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 05:23, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
I can certainly wait until tomorrow. Are you fluent in any languages other than English? --Hildanknight (talk) 05:53, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, I am not. And my Japanese is the next best language I know, but I am hardly fluent for the purposes of competent work. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 05:57, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
Are you interested in Singaporean architecture? Perhaps I could try to find and send you sources. Singaporean libraries would also have material on architecture in the rest of the Malay Archipelago (Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei), but most would be in Malay. Being fluent in only one language does limit the countries and topics that you write about. I frequently use Chinese-language sources in my GAs (such as Ya Kun Kaya Toast). Wishing you success in learning Japanese!
Of course, monolingual English editors who are keen to help counter systemic bias can help copyedit articles on non-Anglophone topics written by multilingual editors. If you are interested in Singaporean architecture, you could try polishing Sengkang DYKs such as Tan Teck Guan Building, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore and TripleOne Somerset.
Would you be open to finding a co-reviewer for the Singapore law articles? I realise that sixteen reviews of long, technical articles is a mammoth task for you, just as fixing the issues is for the professor and me. There are many situations where a co-reviewer would be useful. For example, when you go on a short wikibreak or when the professor disagrees with you on an issue. Once again, thanks so much for taking the time and effort to review the Singapore law articles!
--Hildanknight (talk) 12:33, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
A co-reviewer would be great, I don't have any objections to it. My own work is currently swamping me on a lot of things. Though, I cannot refuse good sources for material - I regularly write about topics that are obscure or weird. I love one on cooking and just about any thing related to the arts.
