Please supply a link to each and every item in order for the unsourced tag to be removed. Corvus cornix 23:17, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

  • I have now added direct links to each article on each named player as well as direct lnks to Baseball-Reference and Basbeall-Almanac. All of the nicknames come from, and are verified in these two sources.User:CBL62

Thanks for writing so many baseball articles

Thanks for writing so many baseball articles! Wikipedia:WikiProject Baseball can always use the help.

I thought Wikipedia:Guide to writing better articles might give you a few hints for making the articles even better.

Again, thanks for the efforts!--Kathy A. 22:36, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Re: Scat Metha deletion

A tag has been placed on Scat Metha, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add hangon on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Eliz81 04:41, 23 June 2007 (UTC) Hi there, and thanks for your comments. I didn't actually delete the article, I only recommended it for deletion because it seemed like a person who played not even a full season over 50 years ago was not notable enough for the biography. I noticed that you have done a lot of new page adds for baseball players that are very thorough, and I commend you for all your hard work on that. If Scat Metha is truly a notable person who meets Wiki Baseball or sports bio guidelines for notability, I suggest you send the relevant information to the administrator who performed the delete, User:Tyrenius (you can see the log of the delete here). If you could sign the user talk page with four tildes (~) after your name, that would be great. Let me just restate that my nomination for deletion was completely specific to Scat Metha and not your other articles. I know you're working hard to make Wikipedia a better place. Let me know if I can be of any more help. Eliz81 09:59, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Restored at your request. See article talk page. Yes, sign with 4 tildes! Tyrenius 21:33, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Edit summaries

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. -- No Guru 18:47, 7 July 2007 (UTC)

Sleepy Bill Burns

My guess is that he accidentally nixed the full text. The edit summary referred to the unecessary reference and not the rest of the text. To be honest, I don't think that editor was the problem. Long levi 08:43, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

  • Long levi Banned. FYI, Longlevi has just been found to be a sockpuppet of a banned user named Tecmobowl, who has used socks in the past. Accordingly, he has also been banned indefinitely. See [1]--Epeefleche 00:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
    • Also, Long levi's comment above answers one question I had, which was why he added back part of something he had deleted when he was Tecmobowl. Basically, he messed up. (In more ways than one, obviously.) I'm going to put the whole thing back to before Tecmo/Levi reverted it originally. Baseball Bugs 10:12, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
    • I put it back to the point where you had added the quote box, and I fine-tuned it a little bit (Tecmo/Levi did make a couple of useful changes). The quote box wants you to supply a source for the quote. I'll let you research that. Baseball Bugs 10:23, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

1935 Tigers Article

Hi there. I have been expanding several articles for the Blue Jays seasons and I started creating articles for the Braves and Expos seasons and I just wanted to say that your 1935 Tigers article is superlative. This is a very well done article. It is nicely detailed and well researched. You have definitely given me some creative inspiration. Maple Leaf 17:21, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

See also/season templates

Instead of adding things like 1968 Detroit Tigers season in the "see also" section (which should ideally be absent/empty), might it be preferable to include the link in templates such as Template:1968 Detroit Tigers? It's certainly a more natural place for users to seek that material, and I don't think we want player articles cluttered with numerous season articles in the 'see also' section. MisfitToys 23:27, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

The Animals articles

Good job creating articles on The Animals' albums and songs. Please be careful about the requirements of music-related articles: album titles go in italics, song titles go in double quotes, songs don't get wikilinked unless there's actually an article for them, album and song articles always have at least two categories (for year and group), and article title disambiguation, when necessary, uses "The Animals" and not just "Animals". If you look at some of the changes I've made to the articles you created, you'll see what I mean. And kudos again for creating these, they have long been missing and it's good to have them here. Michigan Wolverines Football

Good work with Michigan Wolverines Football. I added Mike Kenn. Have you looked at http://mgoblue.com/football/article.aspx?id=40076 for additional players.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 18:47, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

I apologize, lets meet on the template talk page. I have some thoughts. I also sent you to the wrong page before. See http://mgoblue.com/football/page.aspx?id=28898 --TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:43, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
Keep up the good work on the template. I would like your feedback on its discussion page though.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 18:07, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I actually think adding redlinks on a template like this would be helpful so that everyone who is a fan can create articles. I have personally created both Mercury Hayes and Ricky Powers (as well as Rob Pelinka) but have no credits notable enough for the template. However, I have several WP:GAC candidates in the pipeline that I have taken from stub status. I endorse adding redlinks for notable figures needing articles personally.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 18:14, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Michigan Wolverines

Good job on the template and the page for important seasons but you are incorrectly wikilinking some people. For exaple, for the 1902 team it links to James Lawrence the american naval hero, not football player. Make sure to check the links. Happy editing. michfan2123 (talk) 18:35, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Michigan Football player articles

You seem to have access to some serious Michigan Football resources that I don't have. We could rack up a bunch of WP:DYKs and WP:GA working together. You may want to check out the cite web and cite book templates. I am going to start cleaning up the articles you just sent me. I would appreciate it if you could add any info you may have access to on Greg Skrepenak, Tyrone Wheatley, Jon Vaughn, Al Wistert, Albert Wistert, Whitey Wistert, Mercury Hayes, and Ricky Powers. Several of these are up for consideration at WP:GAC right now. Skrepenak is especially high in the queue. If you add info try to use the templates above like the rest of the references in the article so I don't get dinged for being sloppy with the refs. I am having great difficulty finding info on Whitey Wistert's Michigan Baseball performance that won him the Big Ten MVP. Any help here would be great toward a future GA nomination.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 19:22, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

You are doing quite well at cleaning up the template. I suspect most redlinks are for articles that should not exist. I.e., someone like Jarrett Irons would fail at WP:AFD because major college sports stars must play professionally within one year of graduating to pass unless they do something else to make them notable like a Rob Pelinka did. Even Chris Hutchinson (American football) would fail at WP:AFD. His article classifies as Michigan WP:CRUFT at the international wikipedia level. I would probably remove him from the template. In fact, anyone in the Other Important Figures section who did not play professionally or at least sign a pro contract and got cut should be removed from the template regardless of how storied they are as wikipedians.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 06:00, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
I have cleaned up Dennis Franklin and nominated him at WP:DYK. I am working on the other names you have mentioned. Let me know who you create and I will try to clean them up so we can get some WP:DYK and WP:GA credits. We have to post at DYK within 5 days of the first edit or fivefold expansion so you have to get them to me pretty quickly.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 19:53, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Since it seems you are going to be doing a lot of these players, please add the birth year category, the position category and the NFL team player categories if you can. Look at Dennis Franklin and see the formatting for DEFAULTSORT.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 22:20, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Keep up the good work. I have Bob Timberlake and Gordon Bell (football) up at WP:DYK now too. The cleaner your work the faster I can finish the cleanup. Some of these guys are interesting. I am enjoying this.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 00:42, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
I was thinking about the All-American section of the template. I think we should somehow signify who was a 1, 2 or 3 time winner and who was unanimous , consensus or regular. What do you think?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 05:41, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
I'll post my idea on the talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 15:40, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Julius Franks

I put a lot of tags on the Julius Franks article. I hope you will be able to say what came from where within the next few days because I am going to nominate this for the WP:DYK feature of the main page. It needs to be cleaned up by the 5th day which is the 1st of December to make the main page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 00:11, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Chris Hutchinson

Based on my experience at WP:AFD Hutchinson is a borderline case. I have watched Duke basketball players get AFDed. Irons is O.K. There is more to him than being an All-American that non Michiganders would care about. I don't know how loose things are going to get, but I had a McDonald's All-American headed for Georgetown AFDed. I am just saying be careful. I suppose with our template all UM All-Americans may be kept by association with each other. I am just not so confident about Hutchinson. I am not going to nominate him for DYK because I don't want to call attention to his article. I am not certain it would survive.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 01:45, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Dan Dworsky

Dan Dworsky has WP:FA potential. I would love to work with you toward this end. Is it possible that you could convert some of your references to cite news, and cite book format? I don't know if you have ever pursued FA, but they get picky about minute details like which of the three types of WP:DASHes you use. You would certainly have to cite your work properly. I am going to try to do Don Dufek, Glen Steele and John Vitale tomorrow. Then, I will get to Dworsky as time permits. I have a lot of work to do for another project on Thursday and Friday though. You may want to look at T:TDYK. I did not nominate Hutchinson. His text is just short of the required 1500 characters. If you want you can beef up his article and nominate it. We have until the end of the 29th (UTC) to make such a nomination. You may want to check out all the other nominations we have in the pipeline there.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 01:44, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Keep up the good work on Dan Dworsky. One of the biggest improvements you could make would be to beef up his WP:LEAD. Since he has a lot of images one should be moved to the upper right as the main image with an appropriate WP:CAPTION. I am going to start working on the articles I said I was going to clean up. I tagged all of Julius Franks like you said. I want to find an obituary for Dick Rifenburg. His birth date would be nice. I think he will be our first joint WP:GAC.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 18:14, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
I think we have responded to the GA on hold request. If you also feel we have done everything you can notify the reviewer we are ready for his reconsideration.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:28, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

--Spebi 08:42, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Regarding Bell. Most succinctly Bell was a professional running back who had his greatest success in college. Nonetheless, it is fairly standard to lead with the fact that he was a professional running back. Even Ricky Powers who had a far less notable NFL career and made GA (and has a easily documented current career) is written with the Professional running back info first. In almost all cases, it is more important to be a professional running back than a college star. I think the exceptions would be practice squad and lesser league professionals. Making the grade in the NFL for three years is a bigger deal than being a star in college in this sense. Many a college star (even bigger than Bell) failed in the NFL. Even the worst General is higher ranking than the best Lieutenant in this respect.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 20:09, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Muransky

Do you have any information on the Raiders playoff roster. It looks like he was not on the 49-man roster:

--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 23:33, 3 December 2007 (UTC)

I have put in a request for the source with the template creator. I do not recall how playoff rosters from that era were assembled or whether 49 was even the full number. It's 53 now isn't it. I can not recall if weekly roster changes were allowed for the playoffs. He might have played in some games and not in others. It is difficult to tell with an OL.
As for 1934. That is what I am looking for. I could not find anything about Whitey Wisterts baseball career at UofM and he was Big Ten MVP. He must have some good stuff. With enough stuff we might be able to push him for WP:GA.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 00:36, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Great stuff on Wistert. We are probably still short on a GA because we don't have enough to explain why he was Big 10 baseball MVP. What is the Michiganensian? Does it deserve a cite book ref or is it a mag?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 16:16, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Template

I am thinking of eliminating the other important figures section. I think we have fleshed out every type of individual who could reasonably contest being added for being in a class of important individuals. I think the remaining persons are personal favorites more than important persons. The only possible category I might add would be Michigan Hall of Honor. However, I think we should leave the template generic so that other schools from other conferences as well as our own can copy it in a way that helps the project move forward without needless battles. I like guys like Dennis Franklin, Jon Vaughn and Jamie Morris. However, from the international Wikipedian perspective, they are not cleanly distinguished from others not included on the template. Why not add Julius Franks, Elmer Gedeon and endless others if we don't just say we have got all important categories of Michigan players included. Any thoughts?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 21:22, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

I think the best way to look at the template is to view it as a general template that we are using for Michigan. What should every football program (in BCS conference) do? I think it might be unfair to Western Michigan Broncos football for whom being drafted at all or ever having played in the NFL might be worth keeping them on the template to hold them to a BCS standard. However, I think most BCS schools would be able to summarize the important wikilinks for their program by copying our format. We have the second most AAs so even though we seem over loaded it is not too much of a problem as a general policy. I think the best way to shorten the section might be to eliminate the "^" and use italics or underlining to represent consensus and unanimous. I think many of the players who we want to say are important are important due to their recent good will production due to recent athletic production. Even though Chad Henne and Ryan Mallett are important to Michigan football, they have not really earned their place on the template. There will be several 2007 All Big Ten awardees and I don't think either will be first team. However, I will not contest this section due to your explanation of a need for a catch all section, which catches them too. I guess we are doing O.K. I left something at Talk:Gerald Ford about whether they want our big template or just the retired numbers one.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 21:53, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
You make a good reasoned point about the length of the template being the result of the inordinate number of AAs, Pro Bowlers, etc, who have come out of the U-M program as opposed to other programs. As for specific people in the OIF category, I think Henne is just like Morris and Breaston. Though he never made All-American and may never be a Pro-Bowler, he is the holder of a number of very significant all-time U-M records, including the all-time career record for passing yards. I included Mallett mostly because of his central importance to the current program, but he also holds the U-M record for the longest pass from scrimmage in school history with a 97 yard pass to Manningham in the Nov. 2007 Wisconsin game). Top 5 tables

You should create these tables on separate pages and transclude them. For example, if Mike Hart gains any yards you would have to go five places to change the yardage. If you create it in one place and transclude it you will only have to change it in one place.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 19:43, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

At User:TonyTheTiger#WP:CHICAGO I transclude a table that shows up in a few different places. Basically, create a page. Then put it in brackets wherever you want it to appear.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 21:26, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

The problem with not having specific criteria for why someone is important is that everyone wants to start adding their favorites. I have experienced this trying to police five tool player. An effort to have a WP:RS say who belongs on the list is to say which things RSs could classify a person as to make them important. This adds a little length and causes repetition, but will keep every guy who has ever been a popular player from feeling like he should be added.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 17:37, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Jack Blott

Hi. I've nominated Jack Blott, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article at Template talk:Did you know#Articles created.2Fexpanded on December 17, where you can improve it if you see fit. Black Falcon (Talk) 23:33, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Would it be possible for you to add an inline citation to the paragraph stating that Blott played only two games with the Cincinnati Reds (third paragraph in Jack Blott#Professional baseball)? I'm sure that fact is noted in one of the 44 sources used in the article, but I don't have access to them. It's not an issue of verifiability so much as satisfying the requirements for WP:DYK. Thanks, Black Falcon (Talk) 23:44, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Great! Thank you, and excellent work with the article, by the way. I'll take a look at the Germany Schulz article now and will comment here shortly. Cheers, Black Falcon (Talk) 00:04, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Wow! Just ... wow! I'm amazed at the fact that you've written three high-quality articles in less than four days. Incidentally, have you considered nominating Germany Schulz for good article status (possibly even featured article status after a peer review) ā€“ it should be a shoo-in?

Anyway, there are quite a few possibilities for hooks in that article, such as:

What do you think? By the way, my knowledge of American football is rather limited, so I'm not certain whether the wording of the third hook is technically accurate: did the "roving center" technique become the basis for the linebacker position, or would it be more accurate to say that it reflected the essence of the linebacker position? Or are both incorrect?Ā :/

The James B. Craig article also deserves a nomination, and I'll read that next; I don't think there'll be a problem with having too many articles for Michigan football players in light of the fact that the articles were created on different days. WP:DYK only recommends that DYK should not contain more than 1-2 articles on the same topic at the same time; it says nothing about featuring multiple articles related to one topic in succession. ā€“ Black Falcon (Talk) 00:52, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

I've nominated the three hooks from Germany Schulz (see Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on December 19) and am tweaking a hook for James B. Craig. You can nominate an article for good or featured article status at Wikipedia:Good article nominations and Wikipedia:Featured article candidates, respectively. In both cases, the listing process itself is fairly straightforward (the same is true of Wikipedia:Peer review). My impression of the two processes is that: the WP:GA review process focuses mostly on the quality of content and sourcing; the WP:FA review process is more intensive and a lot of attention is given to minor issues of formatting and word choice. ā€“ Black Falcon (Talk) 03:29, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
I've nominated a hook from James B. Craig; see Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on December 16. I had come up with three hooks, but only one was less than 200 characters in length, so... Cheers, Black Falcon (Talk) 04:17, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

How do you feel about Bostic being credited with 2 Pro Bowls when he lost the tiebreaker for the second?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 02:34, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
I guess my question is should we change the template to 1 Pro Bowl. I think we should. I am not sure whether either Bostic is above low importance to any wikiproject or on an international wikipedia level. I think that a dab should be at Keith Bostic.
On another issues we are going to need date of birth and place of birth for as many of the rticles we have created as possible to have decent WP:GAC chances. That was a major objection at Gene Derricotte, Dennis Franklin, Jarrett Irons, Julius Franks, Jim Detwiler and will be so for all the guys who did not play professional football. Do you have any sources?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 16:41, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
I changed the template because I don't feel we should set the precedent that people who almost get invited to the Pro Bowl can count it as an invite for an article we want to be featured on the main page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 16:56, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

  1. You should start trying to promote some of our best work like Bob Chappuis and Germany Schulz
  2. On the talk pages you should be adding WPBiography, NFLproject, WikiProject College football, & WikiProject Michigan where applicable. I add Michigan whenever someone was raised in Michigan before playing for the Wolverines or coached in Michigan afterwards.
  3. You may want to begin using NFL PlayerCoach for players who become coaches. I had converted Ted Petoskey some time ago and converted Jack Blott today. Germany Schulz, John Maulbetsch, Gustave Ferbert, Bump Elliott and James B. Craig could all use such a conversion. If you have access to the Baltimore Sun, it would be great if you could get the true Ozzie Newsome quote and anything else you might be able to add about him being remembered for his one-handed grabs.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 01:28, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

My New NCAA Chart

Many thanks for reviewing the table. I always appreciate input on my work. Ah, 1947...I cringe thinking about how many Blue fans I will have to face about that year. First, I would like to assure you that I personally consider Michigan to have been the best football team in the nation in 1947, and I'm sure a vast majority of experts would agree with me (it wouldn't surprise me if half of the 119 writers that voted Notre Dame #1 in the special poll were strict adherents to the pre-bowls format, and the other half was just plain dumb ā€” although I might be in agreement to the tiniest degree with the former, as, in those days, the bowl game was not so much a season climax as a nice trip to California, with a football game thrown in). I wish to God I could bold the Mad Magicians ā€” nine other Michigan teams won consensus national championships, and yet the 1947 squad, the team robbed of the title by famous Notre Dame, was the best of the bunch. I smiled when you mentioned Bump. In fact, I have a great deal of sympathy for your situation. The 1958 Hawkeyes won their consensus title from the FWAA, who voted after Iowa smashed Cal 38-12 in the Rose Bowl. So, be prepared, as I will sound like a massive hypocrite defending the decision to exclude Michigan's '47 team from consensus status, a decision which I can find no way out of and yet am tortured by every day. Sorry for the melodrama.

The sources of the consensus national championships are the official NCAA record book and the list of champions on NCAAsports.com, the official site for NCAA sports. Like you, I am very appreciative of the inclusion of the NCF as a consensus selector through 1935 (which knocks on four more titles for Michigan). The period from 1950 to the present is also very sound, save the inclusion of the NFF as a consensus selector. It's the period from 1936 to 1949 that gets me. A number of deserving teams were named national champion by selectors other than the AP, with the 1947 Wolverines leading the pack. (no pun intended ā€” wolverines travel in packs, right?) Both the record book and the NCAAsports.com list have Notre Dame as the one and only AP champion of '47. I read all of the information about the special poll of 1947 in 1947 Michigan Wolverines football team. It goes without saying that it is difficult to prove what was and wasn't official sixty years ago, and, in this situation, I'm afraid that it might take more than a few local newspapers to overthrow the NCAA. Most of what I've heard claims that DFP editor Lyall Smith put together the poll, and all of what I've heard claims that the poll was unofficial. Basically, what it comes down to is finding a way to prove that the special poll was official, if such an achievement is possible. If you can do it I would be behind you 100%, and I'll provide any help you may need along the way. As I've said, I would love to be able to list Michigan as a consensus national champion in 1947, but, until I have enough to go on, the decision has been made by myself and others to rely only on the official information. Good luck on your quest! (Again, sorry for the melodrama.) Iowa13 (talk) 06:01, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't want to come across as holding a bias towards Notre Dame ā€” in fact, I am a considerably outspoken opponent of Notre Dame's status as king of the college game. One national championship in the last thirty years should hardly earn one the title of king. But you must understand that departing from the method used for designating consensus champions for one year out of 137 will look even more biased, especially since, as hard as it may be to swallow, the popular bias towards Michigan is nearly as bad as the one towards Notre Dame. There are other years besides 1947 in which the consensus method leaves out a deserving or includes an undeserving, but strict consistency should be favored over picking and choosing. A deserving Michigan team left out will almost always generate more controversy than another deserving left out. Obviously, none of that would matter if the AP really did name two official #1's in '47. I would very much like to see the PDF's of the AP articles. My email is iowa13@gmail.com. Gene Derricotte

With all your recent work on the 1947 Michigan Wolverines football team I was wondering if you found anything to beef up the Gene Derricotte article.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 13:45, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

As always, thanks for the help. I am unsure about one thing you might find in your article treasure chest. I know at the end of 1948 he held the Michigan career interceptions record. However, his best single season was his sophomore year and he may have set it in 1947 or even possibly 46 depending on how many he had in 1944 and 1947. Change the infobox if you can find out he set it before his senior season. I eagerly await your efforts on this article.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:49, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Auto peer review

I have posted automated peer reviews at Talk:Germany Schulz and Talk:John Maulbetsch. I will get to your other three articles this week. You should try to clean them up. If the problem is caused by a direct quotation say so.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 23:54, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

As hard as you work, these changes aren't too much for you to handle. The queue is almost a moth for articles. Basically, the Auto peer review just says what rules you are violating. Many of these will be because the direct quote violates a rule. For example, a direct quote might use a contraction. Just put a note on the talk page that the article has a direct quote that is causing the problem. See Talk:Keith Bostic (football player).--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 01:15, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
I have done a lot of Germany Schulz's auto peer review corrections. I am not going to go through the article and look for links to add anymore. You can also add the persondata pretty easily. I suspect most of the remaining issues are problems with the style used in direct quotations. You should take a stab at John Maulbetsch--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 03:51, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
I have added the auto peer reviews to the other three pages. I began working on Bump Elliott.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 06:24, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

4th A-A controversy

Rick Volk has become my fourth A-A controvesy (following Bubba Paris, Billy Taylor, and Paul Goebel). What do you know?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 17:07, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

I am thinking that there are probably numerous All-American lists that are not recognized towards determining consensus and the other unrecognized lists. I guess we should tread carefully.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:03, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
As with Billy Taylor, Bubba Paris, Paul Goebel, etc., I thought we had agreed to go by the neutral arbiters of All-American history (http://www.ncaa.org/library/records/football/footballs_finest/2002/154-174.pdf, ESPN Encyclopedia of College Football, ESPN Encyclopedia of Big Ten Football.) Lets take this to the template talk page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 14:40, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
ESPN and www.ncaa.org both use the recognized lists. They should match. I would have to go thumb the Encyclopedia again. However, Volk seems to be a type 4.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:50, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
I agree Volk desrves equal treatement with all other type 4 A-As. I would add him with the other dozen or so you named with an according asterisk. Clearly he was not type 1, 2 or 3. He is a type 4 and all type 4s deserve equal treatment.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 01:34, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Images

The Gene Derricotte and Bob Chappuis images would not pass at WP:FAC because both men are living and a main image should not be a fair use copyrighted image. We may get away with them at WP:GAC.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:05, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Sample A-A page

I would cite as a source such as the ESPN Encyclopedia of College Football, which clearly enumerates for each season which All-American lists are recognized for unanimous and consensus (50%) designations. I would also make sure the All-American page clearly explains what consensus and unanimous are with a sourced ref if possible. Then you could also note that in any year there are several other lists not officially recognized toward consensus/unanimous designation to account for the likes of the controversies I pointed out on your talk page earlier. The ESPN format is pretty good. They use a table where in one column is the players name and in each of the other columns is a particular list with appropriate checks. I think that would be a better layout for this type of page.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 07:35, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I don't know. I usually thumb it at Borders when I need a fact.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 07:43, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
I see you are hard at work on the 1925 list. You should take some of these to WP:FLC and get some broader feedback and possibly recognition.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 19:59, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Ed Frutig

I have serveral problems with the Ed Frutig article. I just changed the DOB in the template, but as you say it is still controversial. More importantly, look at th DI football for blocked punts (http://www.ncaa.org/library/records/football/football_records_book/2007/2007_d1_football_records_book.pdf at pg 52).--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:13, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

As stated above see pge 52 (or 53 counting the cover). See the template talk. I state what my issue is.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:21, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes as the notes in the section say these are official NCAA records only since 1937. Doesn't that include Frutig's career?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:28, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Right above Blocked punts section title is an explanation for all blocked kicks (punt, FGs and PATs).--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:51, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

NPOV would say report all sides that are clearly WP:ATT. One side would be that he was a monster punt blocker who recorded five in one season. The other is that according to official NCAA records he could not have record more than 2 or 3 in any one season. Take a look at what I did with Gene Derricotte on a similar issue when the NCAA, Big Ten and Michigan record books geve three different sides of the story on his big year. I would like to leave the door open that Marquise Walker at least has a share of the Michigan career record with four.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 01:32, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
P.S. I made an WP:NPOV addendum.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:51, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Resource help

I got a GA on hold at Talk:Tyrone Wheatley. There are a couple of reviewer concerns that might be aided by your resources:

  • "Some describe him as the greatest football player in Michigan High School history." If you're going to same "some", include more than one source.
  • I could just reword, but if there are multiple sources that would be interesting.
  • "In college, Wheatley also ran track. He was the 1994 Big Ten 110 metre hurdles champion and was selected first team All-Big Ten.[28]" Single and two-sentence paragraphs either need to be expanded or incorporated into another paragraph. I'm sure there is some more information about this that can be added.

With respect to the latter of the above, since he was a high school state champion in four events and a big ten champion in only one, it is interesting to figure out if he ran more than one of the four events in college and if his All-Big Ten award was merely for hurdling or for a combination of events. Can you help with this?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 12:01, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Pats!!! EEWWW! They need to lose so the 1972 Dolphins can stay on top of the record heap. Besides, the hubby is a Colts fan, if I dared to root for the Pats, I'd be out in the cold. Go Packers! Ealdgyth | Talk 19:47, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Woolfolk

I have discovered that there may be a lot missing on Wolfolk. I can not verify for certain that he was a member of the 1981 Big Ten 4x100m relay champions although I know he was on both the 1980 (UofM record book) and 1982 teams (big Ten Champs) so it is probably a safe assumption. He is on several other UofM record setting relay teams. I will beef up the article tommorow. All this leads me to believe he was likely on some Indoor Big Ten relay team champs, but I can not find the info. In fact, he may have won some indoor individual Big Ten Champs that are not listed. This all follows with the All-Big Ten teams that I can not find from that era. Are indoor and outdoor separate All-Big Ten teams? I am frustrated, but will beef up the article with what we have.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 04:37, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

I called the Big Ten office today to find out why the Big Ten Record book posted online does not include indoor track individual champions or pre-1984 All-Big Ten teams and they gave the excuse that records aren't kept for indoor track and All-Big Ten started in track in 1984. They put me in touch with someone at UofM's media services who said he would send me a .pdf of Michigan indoor track going back to 1918 which may help Butch Woolfolk, Tyrone Wheatley, Elmer Gedeon, George Hoey, Braylon Edwards and many others depending on what info it has. I hope it is a serious enough publication to be cited on WP. Depending on how things work out, I may contact them for official Michigan archive photos for some of these guys too.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 21:20, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. I have a copy of the Men's Track Media Guide coming in the mail. By next week I should be able to properly cite things like three time All-American and Penn Relays champion. I think I will take Tyrone Wheatley to WP:FAC when it gets off WP:PR. Currently, the only NFL player FA is Jim Thorpe (from what I can tell) and he was promoted on August 132004. I think his article looks O.K., but I think he could surely use some of your quips. Willis Ward

I got the 2008 Michigan Track & Field Media guide. They do not credit Ward as ever being a NCAA champion. High jump 2nd in 1935, 3rd in 1933 and long jump 4th in 1935 giving him three All-American recognitions. The Big Ten record book does not credit him as an NCAA champion. The NCAA record book credits a Bert Nelson as the 1932 NCAA champion.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 19:18, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

I guess I am asking for a response on the following: "Ward won the NCAA high jump championship in June 1932 with a jump of 6-7 1/3.[4]"--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:31, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
It would not surprise me if he won and was disqualified for being black or something, but the story needs to be fleshed out if that is the case.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:39, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I deleted the material you added to the Chappuis article because it was unsourced. The information is interesting, and if you have a verifiable source, it can be re-inserted. Because the Chappuis article is currently undergoing a "good article" review, it cannot have unsourced material in it. Thom Darden

After Tony Boles got promoted to GA, I felt it was my worst GA. I tracked down an author of an A^2 News article that I could not access otherwise. This led to some cleanup of the Boles article. In doing the cleanup, I ran across the Thom Darden article. He needs our help and as an All-American he is in our wheelhouse. I will take a look at cleaning up some of the article with refs. Your quotes and quips would help too.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 23:58, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

GA review of Willis Ward

I've reviewed the article and left notes on the talk page. I've put the nomination on hold for seven days to allow the issues to be addressed. Feel free to contact me on my talk page, here, or on the article talk page with any concerns, and let me know one of those places when the issues have been addressed. If I may suggest that you strike out, check mark, or otherwise mark the items I've detailed, that will make it possible for me to see what's been addressed, and you can keep track of what's been done and what still needs to be worked on. Infobox images

Why did you move the images out of the infoboxes at Bump Elliott, Scott Shafer, Butch Woolfolk, Bob Timberlake and Bill Daley (American football)?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 05:07, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Also, what do you think about creating a Michigan Wolverines men's basketball page so we don't have to redirect to Michigan_Wolverines_men's_basketball#Men.27s_basketball and so that we are consistent with most other NCAA and Big Ten schools?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 05:07, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

I apologize, for Bump Elliott and Butch Woolfolk I removed the fair use images because the rationale no longer applies with properly licened images. I reverted the other edits and the images are still there. If it is just living football player infoboxes Elmer Gedeon is O.K. because he is dead and does not use a football info box. That just leaves, George Hoey and Gordon Bell (American football) of article I have either been involved with at the WP:DYK or WP:GA level.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 06:11, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Lolich.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Lolich.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:14, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

UM hoops

I had mentioned it to you for a couple reasons:

  1. It is kind of an honor to create such an important page, which will surely be highly trafficked once created and properly linked.
  2. You have done so much for Michigan Athletics that I think you deserve such an honor.
  3. It kind of looks like you are running out of Michigan Athletics pages to work on.
  4. It is kind of fun to do a page that will be actively edited with current news and since you have done so much creating of back roads articles, I thought you might want to be the creator of one that is a main thoroughfare as it were.

I am a big hoops fan, but have lost interest over the last few years of no Dance tickets. I actually flew to the tournament to see Webber call timeout and was also in attendance when the 1997 squad won the NIT. Both games no longer exist officially however. I am not sure I am the man to tackle such an article. However, while creating the coach template, I noticed that eight big ten team articles exist and Michigan has a redirect. We are all alone in 9th place I guess, which is about proper given the current state of Michigan hoops. We are ahead of Penn State and Northwestern who don't even have redirects. The article will get written. People will notice eventually. It may take until we have another good season, but it will be written I am sure.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 22:50, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Bob Chappuis at FAC?

What do you think about nominating Bob Chappuis at WP:FAC? I am linking his article to the web to make it more verifiable. I have three more Time Magazine articles I want to review. It would be good if you would nominate it if you support such an action because an editor can only have one nominee at a time and as soon as Jack Kemp passes WP:GAC, which I think it should I want to nominate it at WP:FAC. I would co-sponsor Chappuis if you are interested in nominating it.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 23:49, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

As I look at Chappuis' article I realize his military section is a little fluffier than I would like. I just added his rank and we do not know anything about his military decorations, his unit and (do lieutenants have commands). We should give him a second box like Elmer Gedeon's first.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 00:11, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Kemp's notability does come from his service to Buffalo. If the city had a project, he would be among the top 25 most important articles for the city in all likelihood (see the template at the bottom of his article). In CA, I am think he may be among the top 5 most important people from his high school. St. Finbar Catholic Church and School (Burbank, California)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article St. Finbar Catholic Church and School (Burbank, California), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add db-author to the top of St. Finbar Catholic Church and School (Burbank, California). .

I recognize the result of the above AfD, so feel free to remove the prod after you have added significant material to the article to show the significance oft his particular church and this particular parish. If it's really the intention to add all of the churches systematically, there's probably going to need to be a general discussion. The presumption at WP is that local churches and local elementary schools are not notable, so I think you'll have an easier time of it if yo uadd something specific from the start. Speedy deletion of Image:Songkran at Wat Thai in Los Angeles, April 2008.JPG

A tag has been placed on Image:Songkran at Wat Thai in Los Angeles, April 2008.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Gary King (talk) 21:34, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Catholic churches in the LA archdiocese

Congratulations on tackling this important project!

I was just expressing my opinion on the Afd (too lengthily for a brand new article! ) basically in favor of keeping the article at least until it matured. Since everybody jumped in and improved it, that was in pretty short order. I had jokingly thought to try this again on another church - come in with a weak article deliberately, then nominate it myself for deletion and complain to my fellow editors to help!Ā :) This was the fastest improvement I think I have ever seen on Wikipedia. It went from Afd to "GA" in about three days! Ā :)

Sorry. I know of no general source on the web for the size of a parish. I know each parish has this info but I don't know who gets that info besides the bishop who might publish it. You'd think there'd be a parish site comparable to those schools have. So I just try to blunder into a figure from browsing for parishioners. Even one from a few years back would be good enough for me.

I regret that I cannot help. I have articles (incl churches) in Vermont and in several counties in Florida and others totalling about 875 articles I'm watching. While this is nowhere close to what "real" editors do (Nyttend watches 8000!) it's about all I can handle. And I do usually need a "personal" connection to keep me interested. Nice of you to ask. Good luck! Student7 (talk) 00:14, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Gene Derricotte

I feel that a lot of other factors too are taken into account while assessing an article apart from size. Though the article is long enough, I dont think it has enough sub-headings. Well, maybe, you might have a different opinion altogether. Anyway, you can always reassess the article if at all you felt that the article deserved a higher rating.Ā :-) Thanks-Ravichandar 04:40, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

I personally feel that there are a few drawbacks with the article. There is little on his personal life and it has been included under te subheading "College" which might be inappropriate. Besides, there is more weightage given to his achievements in college than professional career. Regards -Ravichandar 04:48, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:1935WorldSeries.jpg}

Thank you for uploading Image:1935WorldSeries.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. 2005 ACC Championship Game

About a month ago, you graciously reviewed the article 2005 ACC Championship Game for me. During the past month, I've upgraded the article and incorporated your suggestions. I've just recently resubmitted the article for featured article candidacy, and I'd appreciate it if you could take another look at the article to see if it now meets your FA standards. Any comments, questions, or support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Oh, and congrats on getting Kevin Newsome! I'm sure he'll be a great QB for RichRod's program. JKBrooks85 (talk) 22:40, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

how to do a redirect

I'd be happy to do it for you, but it's easy. 1. create a new article for Congregation B'nai B'rith 2. In that article, include only

#redirect Wilshire Boulevard Temple

That's all.Ā :) doncram (talk) 06:21, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

any more churches that are NRHPs?

You're welcome about the redirect info, and it is a good idea for that exact purpose.

I see here you've been creating articles on churches in the LA area. If there are any churches that you want to do that are on the list of NRHPs, I would be glad to help, and I believe i would be able to help in significant ways. The List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles County, California shows articles created already for NRHPs in LA area, and many redlinks. An easier-to-read list, with street addresses and more info, is this list of LA County NRHPs at NRHP.COM. Let me know if there are any you want to do. Anyhow, keep up the good work! doncram (talk) 06:39, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

You mention going through Los Angeles landmarks, and I did see one of your references in the Wilshire Boulevard Temple article was for some landmark number 110 or something. Do you mean you have a list of official California state landmarks in Los Angeles, or a list of official City of Los Angeles landmarks? In either case, I would like to help take on those systematically. For one thing, there is need for an infobox customized to those, like the NRHP infobox is customized for NRHPs, to hold the number and so on. I could help with that, if you are doing that. And if you are, is this in connection with WikiProject Southern California or any other wikiproject? doncram (talk) 06:53, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
Got your message about Burbank City Hall and Breed Street Shul. I have gone and edited both of those somewhat. I observe that you must be creating NRHP infoboxes by cutting and pasting from another article, and then editing in the new article (because, for example, you had the REFNUM for the Burbank City Hall in the infobox for the Breed Street Shul). If you do any more NRHP sites, it is much easier for you to use what I call the Elkman NRHP infobox generator, developed and maintained by Elkman for the NRHP. Just go there, search and find your site, and then cut and paste from its output there. It will be all filled in with actual information from the National Register Information System database, from which Elkman did a big download of data. Then you can make further changes if you have additional information. Anyhow, very nice job with both of those articles! doncram (talk) 22:06, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

More Cali NRHP articles

Those are really nice articles. Great photos. Great development of the text. The stubs are nice too. I am meaning, by the way, to go out of my way to visit the Burbank city hall, one of your previous articles that i am most interested in (and which, as a public building, I expect will be more open to a visitor bumping in than other places). I think the only thing i have to suggest, is, please announce your new articles in Wikipedia: WikiProject National Register of Historic Places! There is a new articles list-box on its main page, just hit edit and put yours in at the top of the list. That will get a few NRHP writers more experienced than me to visit your article, and they may have more substantial suggestions to make. You're certainly invited to join the WP:NRHP directly, feel free to sign up on the main page. But whether you do that or not, you are welcome to announce the new articles and to participate on the project's Talk page. Really, though, you're doing great.

Oh, I wonder, do you know that you can request the full NRHP inventory-nomination texts, and accompanying photosets, from the U.S. National Park Service? They send them out for free. You just have to request them by email to nr_reference (at) nps.gov (send your postal address, they copy and send out by postal mail). You found one of those documents useful for the synagogue article, which they happened to make available at their website. It's usually a very good source; you should just request it routinely. doncram (talk) 05:09, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

List of Registered Historic Places in the City of Angels

Hi CBL -- I just started up List of Registered Historic Places in the City of Angels as a list-table to cover just the NRHPs in the city of Los Angeles. I would like to add some intro text and put it up for DYK, along the lines of "did you know that the City of Los Angeles has 123(or whatever) sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places".

For now, I am leaving off a Description/Summary column, until the DYK happens, because it would be impossible to fill it all out.

Could you take a look at it? Please discuss at the Talk page. doncram (talk) 21:06, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Okay, good, glad you do like it. The rest of LA County (and, apparently some more that belong in this list, are sitting now in List of RHPs in LA County. Please transfer over whatever other rows should be transfered over into the City of LA table. I don't know all the neighborhoods of LA, nor do the good people at the National Register. By the way, i have a recent pic of Bolton Hall in Tujunga, but i wasn't aware that was in LA. I did know already to transfer over the places listed in NRIS as being in Hollywood, North Hollywood, and San Pedro. Perhaps the NRHP people were anticipating that the referenda for independence of Hollywood and Long Beach/San Pedro were going to pass.
I will propose the DYK to give credit to you too, by the way, though you get more of them every week than i ever have gotten in total...Ā :) doncram (talk) 00:55, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for stepping in fixing up location information (and/or switching across the City vs. County lists). About Naming conventions, in regards to "Al Malaikah Temple - Shrine Auditorium" and others, though.... in a list of National Historic Landmarks such as List of NHLs in CA, I use the NHL program names for sites. In a list of RHPs, I prefer to use the NRHP program names for sites (which differ from the NHL names in some cases). For the actual article names, a more common name is fine. In the NRHP infobox in a page about an NHL, i use the NHL name, though. And otherwise use the NRHP name in the NRHP infobox (again, both of which may differ from the common name and name of the article). So, this is not a big deal, but I think "Al Malaikah Temple" is the correct name to appear in the List of RHPs in the City of Angels, although that may link to an article named Shrine Auditorium. The problem is, we are temporarily constrained by having no Description column for a few days until DYK expires. In the description column, it would make sense to work in the Shrine Auditorium alternative/common name. doncram (talk) 04:26, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

(unindent) I agree about splitting out Pasadena, also. Am surprised it has so many. It is definitely next. But let's be strategic about when to split it out to create a new article, so as to put it up for DYK. Let's see if the LA DYK (not yet submitted) flies. doncram (talk) 03:31, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, i see that you have been busy with the photos! Great work, i am very impressed. Appears almost 1/2 of the 186 have photos already. I took pics a while back of Baldwin Hills Village, will add one of those, but otherwise i am done for a while and will not be able to add more.
Yesterday i put it up for DYK, in the cohort of articles started May 15, so it should be up for DYK for tomorrow the 20th already i think. The nomination is at 3. It would be nice if you wanted to propose a picture to include with the DYK, or to suggest any alternative wording. My nomination wording is not that great. I am not sure how it works with giving co-credit; i asked to share credit with you and with KudzuVine. KudzuVine has been great about adding pics into list-articles about National Historic Landmarks in many states, and he responded to my request to add pics here, too, although neither he nor i have done as much as you.
After the 20th, I'll add a description column so that we can try to say something short and interesting about each site, if that is possible...Ā :) doncram (talk) 15:21, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for editing the intro text, you definitely improved it, as well as adding more pics. Seems like a go, DYK-wise, knock on wood. doncram (talk) 05:33, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey, i've been away a few days. I see you've kept adding photos. Here's a copy of DYK recognition received, i don't know why they didn't award it directly to you too. doncram (talk) 02:48, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

On 20 May, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

P.S. http://stats.grok.se/en/200805/List%20of%20Registered%20Historic%20Places%20in%20Los%20Angeles shows 2,728 hits on the article, peaking on the DYK day of course. Pretty good for a DYK, i believe. doncram (talk) 07:31, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Some sourcing questions just arose as well. Please help me respond if you have a chance.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 03:32, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
There is no real deadline. There is a momentum effect sometimes, where if people start objecting other people think the objections are valid and object too. We want to clean things up before people object. For the image you just need to document one publication date so that we can verify it is in the public domain. You can follow along with the rest. I am kind of pushy with trying to get things in front of reviewers. If I waited for you to do it, I don't know when it would happen. Thanks for being supportive of my effort. A FAC generally will get a solid week before it is seriously considered for closure, but some candidates are under consideration for five weeks or so.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 05:42, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Pasadena, and List of RHPs in LA County

Hi -- It's taken me a while to get caught up with some other stuff, after being away for a week or so. Earlier i added a Description column to the List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles and put in a couple sample short descriptions, plus commented about that in its Talk page. Also i edited List of RHPs in LA County to separate the 96 Pasadena ones into a separate table, which can go into a new article. How do you want to proceed with that? I was thinking we could collect photos for the Pasadena ones, adding them into this table, and then when ready create the article and a 1500 word intro and go for DYK. The table development could be with the Description column included or not. I am inclined to include it all along. I am guessing the DYK will be accepted, as long as the article is new and the paste-in from the existing article is just the table, with the text to be created within the new article, so it will be viewed as brand new 1500 word article (as opposed to having to create something that is 5 times as long as the sum of all the descriptions in the table). Let me know what you think. (Also, maybe you could email me and we could try to get together sometime, perhaps to meet in Pasadena taking pics? There's an email-to-me button on my userpage.) Anyhow, i see you are continuing to do great stuff, keep it up! doncram (talk) 03:45, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Got your message back. Okay, there's no rush about anything, this is a hobby we just can work at when we can and feel like it, it is not supposed to involve any undue pressure. If u'd care to meet in LA i could do that too, in particular i want to get to the main library sometime soon. By the way, check out User:Doncram/Sandbox4, my first draft starter table of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments. You haven't started the equivalent yet, have you? Otherwise i don't think it exists yet. I may contact the Dept of City Planning to see if i could get an electronic file of it, perhaps with lat.-long. coordinates too, as it would be quite tedious to type in all 856 of them. Need to pick a different color too, the skyblue color showing is the color used to designate National Historic Landmarks within lists like the List of RHPs in LA. I believe i can get a LA HCM line and date added to the NRHP infobox, too. doncram (talk) 05:43, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Los Angeles Plaza Historic District

I note there is not a separate article for Los Angeles Plaza Historic District, while it deserves one separate from the Olvera Street article that the List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles article links to for this district. Notably, the district includes buildings on other streets, as the district is "Roughly bounded by Spring, Macy, Alameda and Arcadia Sts., and Old Sunset Blvd." I found a relevant link to use in such an article, and pasted it into the description for the district within List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles. I wonder if you want to create this article sometime; I'll leave it for you in case you may want to, rather than just creating a stub right now. doncram (talk) 00:29, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

L.A. Historical-Cultural Monuments infobox

We think alike. An infobox for LAHCMs is needed. I believe that there is too much hard-coded about NRHPs into the NRHP2 infobox for me to adapt that to cover sites that are LA Historical-Cultural Monuments (LAHCMs) but not also NRHPs. However, its code can be adapted to create a new infobox on LAHCMs alone, or perhaps on LAHCMs and also California Historical Landmarks (CHISLs), or perhaps to cover any generic local designation. See my posting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#Local designations enabled for NRHP2 infobox. If you would post a comment there about what you see is needed, or how importance that is, that might be helpful in getting others to help. I believe there is sympathy for this need, and i know others have expertise that would be relevant.

If an infobox is developed for LAHCMs specifically, what information should it include? Certainly it should allow for the LAHCM site number, rather than the NRHP refnum. I do think the WP:NRHP discussion thread is the right place to develop these ideas, though. doncram (talk) 15:32, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

pic trip

About the last pics for List of Registered Historic Places in Los Angeles, i'll get that one missing one in Silver Lake, if u haven't already. Also i could make a pic trip to get Van Nuys and the 2 in Chatsworth, or i could make a pic trip to get the 3 in San Pedro and the 1 in Wilmington. Please let me know if you have those in your camera, or in your sights, already. That leaves just a few others. One towards LAX, maybe u got it already, open on Saturday and Wednesday only. I expect u r mopping up the remaining ones downtown. Cheers, doncram (talk) 03:57, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, very close. Okay, good to know about the gatedness of Garbutt House. May try to get it anyhow, will try to consult a near-neighbor to there. Okay, u do Chatsworth then and i will try to score the 5 near San Pedro. By the way I see Big Orange Landmarks blogspot guy, who you have cited before, was able to score both of the Chatsworth ones: Chatsworth ones at Big Orange Landmarks blogspot. That blog seems useful to follow for tips how to find some sites. Cheers, doncram (talk) 04:33, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I went to San Pedro and got Battery Osgood-Farley, Municipal Warehouse No. 1, and the Wilmington Branch Library). I'll upload them in the next few days. I also got pics of a pillbox, down by the water, that may or may not be the other Battery that i thought was needed (while i thought we already had a pic of Battery Osgood-Farley near the hilltop). But:
  • American Trona Corporation Building is located inside the Fort MacArthur military base. I got a Public Affairs phone number to call, to try to make some arrangement. But the officer at the gate, although helpful about other sites, did not know of the American Trona building. So I am requesting the NRHP documents on it from Washington, to be more informed before trying with the public affairs office. Also there is a chance the NRHP documents will have a useable photo.
  • S.S. Catalina is the former ferryboat to Catalina, and is reported to be sinking or sunken by now, in Ensenada Mexico (reported by ticket-sales-person for the current Catalina ferry, located under the big bridge, who knows because it was in news reports and because she saw it sinking there in Ensenada, herself). I took a pic of the terminal building, and will upload that. S.S. Catalina took about 4 hours to make the trip, while Catalina Express does it in about 1 hour now.
About the Kerckoff Building and Annex, the LAHCM document gives 3 alternative sets of street address numbers for it: 553 S. Los Angeles St., 101-133 E. 6th St., 558-564 S. Main St. ( think the NRHP lists just the first address). So i am not looking at a map right now but figure it may run along 6th street between S. Main and S. Los Angeles St. then.
I can get the El Greco building tomorrow i think. Cheers, doncram (talk) 21:32, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
Haven't yet uploaded my pics from San Pedro. Didn't get El Greco. But, wondering, have u gotten the 2337 Benedict Canyon one? Or I might be able to go by there soon. doncram (talk) 20:16, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
good, glad u got el grec, which i dont remember what that was going to be anyhow. consider benedict canyon to be eggs, or toast, or some such sentiment! doncram (talk) 04:18, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
meaning i got pics of it. interesting about El Greco Apartments, that it was moved and so on. I added LAHCM info, and to do so switched infobox to NRHP2, which by default shows the California map. It's time we rounded up a Los Angeles map to use, instead, for all the Los Angeles sites. If u don't like having the CA map appear, and prefer no map (and i wonder if i prefer no map for El Greco and for others), then just set locmapin= to blank, rather than locmapin=California. doncram (talk) 12:18, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Okay i relented and uploaded a few.Ā :) Muni Warehouse No. 1; Kress House in Benedict Canyon; Wilmington Branch. Have multiple pics for each of these, just uploaded one each. Have a couple pics (not great) of Catalina Express and/or the Catalina terminal under the bridge, in lieu of SS Catalina (the sinking/sunk ship now in Mexico). I am afraid the pic we have placed for Battery John Barlow and Saxton in the table is a pic of part of Battery Osgood-Farley, instead. Have multiple pics of Osgood-Farley. Not sure if Battery John Barlow and Saxton still exists. i got pics of a pillbox at/near where Battery John Barlow and Saxton should be, but am unsure what to do with them. I think we need more real info, such as official NRHP nomination documents for several of these sites. About meeting or other, please email using my email box on my userpage, i would rather not chat about such out in open, permanent record space here. doncram (talk) 19:48, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

LAPL and Los Angeles Central Library

I notice the Los Angeles Public Library could use updating with wikilinks to each of the new branch library articles you've been creating. Probably there should be a separate Los Angeles Central Library article split out, with a "main article" link from the current section in the LAPL article (as for New York Public Library about the library system, and New York Public Library Main Branch ). As a new article, with 5X expansion from current section, could be a DYK. Just thoughts.... doncram (talk) 14:04, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Nice work. Thanks for all the time and effort you put to create the list. Btw, I'd like to inform you Omid Tahvili, featured on May 6, 2008, got 27,500 views according to this data. --BorgQueen (talk) 17:19, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Sure, I remember it word for word since I was the one who wrote it.Ā :-D The hook was: ...that in April 2008, Forbes listed Omid Tahvili as one of the world's ten most wanted fugitives? (I guess people wondered if he was some kind of dangerous terrorist... but he's not that dangerous.) --BorgQueen (talk) 17:30, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Cushion plant

Thank you for the notice and compliment. However, I did not write the article. I started it, and a group of plant editors made it a nice little article worthy of being on the front page, including adding a researched hook, discussing what to use as the hook, including alternatives, and nominating the hook for inclusion in DYK, and monitoring it while up for consideration.

The problem with the awards and recognition for DYK is they are given to individuals, when Wikipedia is a community of writers. I write with a small group, and was once honored with am award, but my editor and I turned it down because ... we are a community of writers, and the award honored only me.

The Cushion plant article is an excellent example of what Wikipedia can put out. But it will always be battled by that list on the DYK awards page of the accomplishments of individual editors, the triple crown winners, the 50 DYK winners, those on their 100 DYKs--quantity is demanded for the awards. There are no awards on Wikipedia for not plagiarizing.

Over 14,000 people clicked on that article because it was an interesting hook in an article about an obscure, but relatable (nature) subject, accompanied by a nice image, created by a small group of hard-working editors.

Old Stagecoach Trail and Old Santa Susana Stage Road

Got ur message/question. I think you were encountering a situation where the NRHP name in our LA list was a red-link and was different than the name of a pre-existing article on the site, and you handled it correctly by revising our list to keep showing the NRHP name (as it is a list of NRHPs) while wikilinking to the pre-existing article. And you added the NRHP infobox, keeping the NRHP name there (as it should be). Further, I edited the article intro to mention the alternative name. And further, i created a redirect at the NRHP name for the site. I think we talked about how to do redirects a while back....

It would have been similar if the problem had been we had created a new NRHP article already, before finding the pre-existing one. Then I would have supported merging our material into the older article, and converting our new article into a redirect to the older one. That gets to the same result as above.

In mergers, I do think it is courteous to merge the newer article into the older one, so that the older history of edits stays with the article. Even if the newer article name is better, because the merged article can be moved with its entire long history to the newer name, after.

Anyhow i think you handled it right. Thanks for checking in! doncram (talk) 22:58, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Pico Canyon Oilfield

Got your message. I could meet there then, would like that. Have been there before. Could you please send me an email using the email-to-me box on my userpage, towards making specific arrangements? doncram (talk) 12:41, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

About the DYK, it is fine for you to nominate and not include me, i don't think i have contributed much yet. Though i do still hope to upload some pics.
About the article name, I don't have any strong opinion about "oilfield" vs. "oil field", though i guess i must have thought oilfield is a legitimate term. I think common usage should govern in choosing the article name, more than what NRHP program used some time ago. Not sure what the set of related articles should be, is there to be one on Well No. 4, one on the whole canyon, one on Mentryville, one on the replica oil derrick and/or the picnic site there? At the time when i started the pico canyon oilfield article, I was expecting there might possibly be a well number 1, well number 2, and so on. However, there is just the well number 4 and the replica derrick. Again what should govern is what the common usage is, perhaps to be clarified soon. doncram (talk) 16:33, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

DYK reviews

I could have missed your doing this already, but could you consider doing some DYK reviews? I notice there are some general requests for help in reviewing at wt:DYK. Even without being an administrator, you can do a lot there, from commenting on proposals to selecting and moving approved ones to the next update. Apparently we just can't move the next update to the page which shows on the Wikipedia mainpage. Any small comments with or without evaluation checkmarks or question marks, help.

By the way, i reviewed one of yours and i also notice your Harold Lloyd Estate in DYK; too bad the pic i took previously seemed not to have been of the right place. Cheers, doncram (talk) 20:29, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for jumping in to help on the DYK reviews, that helps a lot. Thanks also for fixing cite in Millard House, which i then ok'd. doncram (talk) 00:55, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Darrin Winston

Hi Cbl62, If you don't mind, would you review the above article under the August 23rd section? An IP earlier added a comment if there should be obituaries on DYK, but a second opinion would be appreciated. Thank you, RyRy (talk) 01:18, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Would you mind reviewing my suggestion for Joseph R. Wood please. It's expiring. Thanks for any help you can give.Nrswanson (talk) 14:50, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

  • Thank you so much for doing that. If you have time, would you mind looking at my expiring nom for Adele Addison as well. Thanks.Nrswanson (talk) 15:50, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
