Notifications edit

Hi, out of these eight edits, I only got a notification for one of them: the earlier one of the two by John of Reading. Of your six, your initial edit didn't ping because there was no link to any user other than yourself; your second edit linked me but did not add a signature; your third edit added no new links (wiping an existing signature and re-signing doesn't add a link and so doesn't trigger a ping); your fifth edit might have worked had you not removed and re-added the wrong signature. --Redrose64 (talk) 14:35, 8 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

User talk:BlueSalix edit

Closed discussion

Hi, Carol. I understand that you removed DHeyward's comment on BlueSalix's page on 29 August in the hope that discussion would die down if people stopped commenting. I had previously removed a response of my own to some of BlueSalix's lies (or, alternately, to some of BlueSalix's memory issues) in the same hope. But it hasn't died down, has it? BlueSalix is still performing his it's-all-somebody-else's-fault dance, and people are still posting comments. One person has posted many times in defence of BS and has praised the "maturity" of his stance. And you yourself, if you don't mind my saying so, certainly haven't stopped posting on the page. In the light of this, in hindsight, your removal of DHeyward's critical comment — the only comment he has made on the page — looks less helpful, and hardly fair. Please restore it. (Unless you're planning to remove a lot more by other people? The current state of the page is upsetting Cwobeel, and no wonder.) Bishonen | talk 19:49, 4 September 2014 (UTC).Reply

@Bishonen:I'm not surprised that people are upset, because it sure seems to be an emotionally charged situation. My viewpoint is that there are a number of people criticizing BlueSalix - bringing up past issues at inopportune times and then blaming for responding defensively (albeit not productively).
I am confused by the tactics and unable to figure out the goal of some of the statements. If it's to generate defensiveness, engage in "right-fighting", and push him/her away - that's working for sure.
Is there a way to move past this in a civil, calmer way - or is there absolutely no chance that the ban will be lifted, even if NE Ent's advice is followed?--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:10, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Bishonen:Do you mind if we give BlueSalix a chance to respond? If he/she does and it's not constructive, I will happily add back the comment with my comment from the edit summary.--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:16, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Mind, me? Please do just as you like. It was a suggestion merely. But if you think he hasn't had a chance to respond... did you notice NE Ent's "very good suggestion" yesterday repeated, most likely copypasted, a suggestion Jehochman had made on 28 August? "You should simply say something like, 'I erred by making an accusation without having, and providing, the necessary evidence. I therefore retract the accusation and will not make an issue of it again.'" Guess what J got for that? A ring-around-the-roses. Who'd have guessed? Bishonen | talk 20:57, 4 September 2014 (UTC).Reply
@Bishonen:Yep, good point - I saw that and it was absolutely a good suggestion that was lost in the melee. Now, my point is, why not a chance to respond without giv[ing] other input to take things side-wise?
I wonder: By not introducing any more comments, BlueSalix won't be side-tracked by other statements to respond to and WILL HAVE TO either step forward and make the admission - or not.
It's hard to say what the timing is for someone [who] is engaged more fully in life outside of WP. In similar situations, I've given several days to.... whenever they've processed their feelings and thoughts one way or another (i.e., weeks or never respond). If he doesn't respond, isn't that the answer?--CaroleHenson (talk) 21:16, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Carole! I'm sorry if you thought my comments to BlueSalix were harsh or unhelpful. I won't be striking them out or retracting them; however, I don't plan to post on that page again. I don't know how much you know about the backstory that led, not just to BS's block, but also to the large number of people watching their page and trying to give them advice. Suffice it to say: it is my observation that sooner or later everyone loses patience with BS. I was late to that party, but I'm there now. The fact that they are still whining about their "life ban" was the final straw for me. But good luck with your and NE Ent's approach of try-a-little-kindness and let's-move-on. Who knows, it might work. --MelanieN (talk) 04:21, 5 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good! I have no reason to post anything new on the page either (meaning I said I'd return a post I deleted if he comes back and isn't cooperative, but that's it)--CaroleHenson (talk) 04:45, 5 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Your GA nomination of Grandma Moses edit

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Grandma Moses you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Re style and words edit

When you gave me the pointers at John Bauer (illustrator) about style and what words to use, something finally clicked in my brain and I came up with this trick for better edits. I'll just mention it to you since it might be useful for other newbies you adopt or mentor. To scan the text for "bad bits" I read it out loud, envisioning myself as a news presenter at the BBC reading the five o'clock news. This really marks the wrong words or sentences with neon signs. Namaste, w.carter-Talk 09:50, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

@W.carter: That's a really good tip. I'll use that myself - and share it, too. Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 09:56, 4 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Matilda Hays edit

Thanks for your courteous note. I was in a bit of a rush, so just banged in her mother without citations, other than the genealogy site you mention.

However, it is all substantiated:

Discussion about non-reliable, verifiable source(s)
[1] Elizabeth Mary ATKINSON, Will of 1833. Prob 11/1811. National Archives.
I'm not sure what information this covers. 1) Is Elizabeth Mary Atkinson mother of Elizabeth Atkinson Hays? (i.e. Matilda's grandmother's name was the same as her mother's married name 2) That Matilda's mother's will was written in her maiden name? 3) I don't understand the dates. Does Prob 11/1811 mean probated 1811? Which was out of synch with a will date of 1833 and would mean that this isn't Matilda's mother, since Matilda was born in 1820. 4) Without knowing any of the content of the will - how do we know that this Elizabeth Mary Atkinson is related to Matilda? I'm confused here?--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:18, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
[2] Will of Elizabeth Mary Hays formerly Breese 1833 - excerpts:
"I Elizabeth Mary Hays give and bequeath to my two daughters Clara Salmon and Emma Marianne Breese equally…
I leave my pearl necklace and bracelets in ??? marotta rose [?] to Elizabeth Hays my daughter
... divided equally between my daughters , namely Clara Salmon, E M Breese, Elizabeth Hays, Susanna Hays, and Matilda Mary Hays except my diamond brooch which I bequeath to my son Albert Hays
It looks like this substantiates: "Elizabeth Mary Hays" is the mother of Matilda and provides information about her sisters and brother.--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:18, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Tishtosh20 (talk) 23:24, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Tishtosh20 and 89.243.55.219: I've numbered items and made some comments below each source / info: So, I think the net-net is:
Elizabeth (nee Atkinson)[3] Hays was Matilda Hay's mother.[2] She was first married to Jacob Breese in 1803 [3] and married John Hays on 4 May 1812 in London.[4] Matilda's siblings were Elizabeth, Susanna and Albert. She had a half-sister, Emma Marianne Breese, and half-sister or sister, Clara Salmon.[2]
I assume that Emma Marianne Breeze is "Mary Breese", one of the household members when Elizabeth and John married. It would make it seem, then, that Clara is likely (but we couldn't say it without a source) the daughter of John Hays. (i.e., I think we need to leave it that Clara was a half-sister or sister... I guess she could also be a step-sister if Clara was John Hay's daughter from a previous marriage)
Is that right? (I would normally put the first citation at the end of the sentence, but for illustrative purposes I am matching up info to source.)--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:18, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Is all of this from the National Archives? We need to have the source info (e.g., publisher or source (National Archives, other); title; url it applies; date the info was published, if you have it. See Wikipedia:Citing sources.--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:59, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

The will is from National Archives, as I said.

The rest is Family History Library data ('FHL Film Number: 380157' etc) Family History Library Catalog - FamilySearch.org - aka Mormon Church. As any fule kno...

The crucial thing is that there is NO evidence for any Creole connection.

Do we really care about the sisters? If we do, Clara and Eliza are both née Breese, ergo step-sisters to Mary.

The will is that of Elizabeth Mary ATKINSON, later BREESE, later HAYS. It shows that she is the mother of Matilda.

The Probate number identifies the document in the National Archives. All this info available online, and most of it at the original website link I provided and you removed. Maybe you should follow links before you remove them in case there is something useful at the other end?

Tishtosh20 (talk) 23:24, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Tishtosh20: - Please read this with the context of the source(s) I'm finding below--CaroleHenson (talk) 00:36, 12 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

  1. The will that you said was from the National Archives: 1) doesn't have any information to use and 2) it's not even clear who this woman is, per my questions above.
  2. The Family History site is a genealogical site - that has a mix of public records and community supplied information. So, that has to be treaded lightly. I've never used anything from Family History because it's difficult to Verify the information. But, if you're able to verify the information - then there would be source information there -- which should be supplied for the citation with a note that it was accessed at familyhistory.org. For instance for the will: title=<will title info - name - date> | publisher=<what records the will was found in (book, public records, etc.> | date=<date of the source> ... and then state where and how it was viewed. There are some people that still might want to not use the source in this case, but it would be much easier to defend.
  3. I didn't delete a reference to familyhistory.org - I removed a reference to a family / personal page of genealogical information.
  4. I am not sure what you mean about no evidence of the "Creole connection". There are reliable secondary sources for this information. Are you saying that you checked the sources and there's nothing in the sources about this?
  5. No, the information about the sisters and brothers doesn't have to go in the article... but it's not unusual to have family biographical information that would include such a cursory discussion. Since we've got to get a good source for the will first, it may be a moot point.
  6. Regarding Clara - do you have a reliable source that says that her maiden name is Breese?
  7. Just for discussion purposes: If the Breese sisters and Matilda share the same mother (which is the way it sounded in the will), aren't they half-sisters?

--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:57, 11 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Content with sources / tags edit

@Tishtosh20:Here's the content with reliable sources or tags where info is needed:

Elizabeth Mary[1] (nee Atkinson)[citation needed] Hays was Matilda Hay's mother.[1] She was first married to Jacob Breese who died in February 1807,[1] and she married John Hays[1] on 4 May 1812 in London.[citation needed] Matilda's siblings were Elizabeth, Susanna and Albert. She had two half-sisters, Emma Marianne Breese and Clara Salmon.[1]
Comments about Creole connection and siblings:
  1. I am not sure what you mean about no evidence of the "Creole connection" - and the Oxford University preview of the biography article shows the discussion of the Creole connection. There are reliable secondary sources for this information.
  2. No, the information about the sisters and brothers doesn't have to go in the article... but it's not unusual to have family biographical information that would include such a cursory discussion.
  3. Regarding Clara - with the source, it's possible that her maiden name could be inferred, but that would be skimming into original research territory. It's better to just use the data that comes from the source. Unless, do you have a reliable source that says her maiden name is Breese? Stike-out, I was wrong the source does mention the two Breese women in relation to the will of their father. Further, I found that Clara married Frederick Salmon in 1830. Her mother and sister and John Hays were witnesses.[2]
  4. Just for discussion purposes: If the Breese sisters and Matilda share the same mother (which is the way it sounded in the will), aren't they half-sisters?
I copied these down from above since they are the only seemingly relevant questions now that a source has been found for much of the info.--CaroleHenson (talk) 01:14, 12 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

A GA challenge edit

If you're looking for an interesting article to review, keep an eye out for Livermorium. Double sharp will probably nominate it in a few days. I'm not a physicist (though I did play one for the navy lol), so articles like that are tough because I have to re-familiarize myself with the lay of the land before making comments. However a different perspective (especially one from someone using the article for the purposes of learning more about the discovery of super-heavy elements) is often really valuable to the authors. Sometimes it's nice to play Watson to someone's Sherlock and note (without shame) that thing XYZ is not as obvious at it appears to them. Protonk (talk) 13:51, 13 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Protonk:
You're right it would definitely be a challenge. And, I love the Watson in the BBC series, so I'm with you there. This particular topic is so far over my head, though, that it might be best to have someone else do the review. If there's an article about a dead person with an unusual pollen on the soles of her shoes, indication of blood settling in a pattern inconsistent with the way the body was found, etc... I'm your reviewer. :)
I'm more comfortable with biographies and art, and just dabble in architecture - like Beechwood (Vanderlip mansion) - because I've familiar with the Hudson Valley area and mansions.
Thanks for thinking of me for it, though.--CaroleHenson (talk) 17:49, 13 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Adoption? edit

Hello Carole,

I'm hoping you might want to adopt a new user, who is also interested in the arts. I've just started here, but enjoy applying my research skills and eclectic interests to a larger knowledge. As a friend recently pointed out, Wikipedia might be a better place for my "know-it-all" attitude (than our conversations, I presume).

I wanted to add some of my knowledge about modern Chicano art, and started with a draft. So some of my questions would be very basic:

1) Can i have more than one draft in my sandbox? 2) Can I upload an image of a painting if it's used as a book cover in a currently available publication? Or can I use a book cover under free use, as an art image, to depict an artist's work.

Thanks,

MsMalaprop (talk) 22:57, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi @MsMalaprop:,
I would be happy to help out in any way I can. You may also be interested in becoming a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women artists. I'll post an invitation on your page.
Yes, you can absolutely create multiple drafts, which can be created by using [[User:MsMalaprop/<insert name you'd like to use>]]. There's more info at Wikipedia user subpage and I'm happy to help if that info isn't clear enough.
You can view your subpages at Special:PrefixIndex/User:MsMalaprop/.
Regarding uploading images of paintings, if it's made in the United States before 1923 then it's in the public domain. If it was made after that date, then yes, it's subject to Fair use guidelines, which means it would have to be loaded into Wikipedia (not commons), have a fair use rationale, and be subject to fair use stipulations.
I hope that helps. It will be great to have another woman interested in writing about artists and visual art!--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:16, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

That's a good question. I don't see anything in the article that indicates why it should have that category - it doesn't seemed to be targeted for Hispanic and Latin American audiences or produced in Spanish.

FAC favor edit

I promise this isn't about physics. Can you take a look at this FAC for Future Science Fiction and Science Fiction Stories? I think it's nearly there but could use a close look at copyediting/structure from someone who hasn't spent the last few weeks reviewing magazine GANs. :) Protonk (talk) 15:11, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sure, @Protonk: I would be happy to. I can get a little done shortly and then in may be several more hours before I can get back to it.--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:06, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Protonk:The article looks good - I made a few minor tweaks, but what was there wasn't wrong. I read through the FAC review and it didn't look like there was anything there for me to tackle.
Should "says" the first note: "Ashley says that Moskowitz declined 'because of his friendship with Hornig',[11] but Davin says..." be in past tense?
I wasn't sure if you wanted me to post a comment on the FAC page, and the tense item is minor. Great job to the nominee, you and the other collaborators/reviewers. Great teamwork!--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:00, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think your thoughts on the FAC page itself would be very helpful. If (and don't take this as a push to "vote" one way or another) you've made an effort to look the article over and haven't found anything actionable, then that's an important data point for the FAC people to know when deciding whether or not to promote an article.
The tense issue is (AFAIK) a matter of habit in articles like this (on and off wikipedia) when discussing published exchanges or comments. Meaning if we note a comment made in a book or article it's common to use the present tense as the work is extant, although any comment in a published work is trivially in the past no matter how recent. :) Protonk (talk) 18:06, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ok, cool. Thanks for the clarification about present tense. I'll post a thumbs up on the FAC page.--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:12, 20 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Nomination of Martin MacNeill for deletion edit

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Martin MacNeill is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Martin MacNeill (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. MelanieN (talk) 15:00, 27 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm a little confused about why this is nominated again... and the nomination pages states that the issue is with the sources. The article is well-sourced, with national and local sources, and contributors have been continuing to add content over the past months. Please feel to respond there, but I'm a little confused for the reason for the nomination - and what is new about this situation that might result in a different resolution.
Personally, I'm further removed from the story than I was when I first wrote about it, indignant about the audacity of the case - but like I say, I am confused.--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:26, 27 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Short lead massaging request edit

Hey Carole,

Can you take a look at the proposed changes to the lead of an article I'm currently reviewing? I've made a few comments but I think it could do with a close look from someone who isn't me or the primary author of the article. Not a very long article so I don't imagine it would take more than 10-15 minutes. Thanks. Protonk (talk) 13:03, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Carole, I found the information for the requested additions and added them before publishing the page. I was not aware that this would upset you. If you'd like I can revert the document back to a draft before you approve or send it back to the drawing board. Bamidele is quite notable, and I'd have a difficult time explaining why I was unable to carry out a rudimentary procedure. I'd like to give the article my full effort before moving on to other hopefully more fertile pastures.Orujah123 (talk) 03:00, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I'm sorry where should i move the page to. I'm new. I make a lot of mistakes.Orujah123 (talk) 03:13, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to accomplish, but I'm not mad. I know the frustration I felt when my first article was deleted... and it was something that was personally of interest to me... so I get that. The only thing is you've had good, clear guidance about what the issues are with the article before me. So, I'm a bit confused if you think we're all wrong.--CaroleHenson (talk) 03:18, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

What do you think of my edits so far? I got rid of all the blogs and if desired I can begin doing print sources, though i link to a print news aggregator at the beginning of the article, newslibrary, that has the beginning, date, and publication name of many articles that only come out in print. Hi everyone,

It was brought to the attention of the judges that there was an error in the newsletter sent out earlier today.

Sign-ups for the GA Cup will close on October 15, 2014, not September 15, 2014 (as mentioned in the newsletter).

Sorry for any confusion.

GA Cup - Round 1 Newsletter #2 edit

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 1

Hello GA Cup competitors!

The judges have learned a great deal in this first part of the competition, and we appreciate your patience with us as we've figured out what works and what doesn't work. As we reported in our last newsletter, an inadequacy in the scoring system has been illuminated in the past 15 days, which has resulted in a major change in the rules. It has also resulted in one withdrawal.

To ensure fairness, we've decided to further increase the number of participants moving onto Round 2. Everyone who has reviewed at least one article will automatically be moved forward, and will be placed in pools. You have until October 29 to take advantage of this opportunity. It is our hope that this will make up for the unforeseen glitch in our scoring system.

Best of wishes to all of you as you continue to help improve articles and make Wikipedia a better place.

Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Hi, Carole Hensen, I am Wikipedia User Noormohammed Satya since 2011. My account was blocked due to certain reasons and was later unblocked on one of the condition of me to be adopted. Hence, I would request you to be my menor for the period I have been asked to. Thanks. — Preceding undated comment added 16:45, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi @Noormohammed satya:,
There seem to be several kinds of issues, but I believe everyone deserves a fresh start. Just to help me understand - why is it that you want to write Wikipedia articles?--CaroleHenson (talk) 10:13, 9 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Carole Hensen,
Yeah there were certain issues regarding certain copyright problems and others. But As you want to know as to why I would like to Edit Wikipedia articles is because I want to expand the information on Wikipedia, Edit the pages on Wikipedia on Indian Television, Actors & Actress on Indian television and the Production houses. The reason is simple that I have various information and knowledge on these and I do believe that there are certain spam information on these pages also it would provide wrong information for Wikipedia Users Hence by sharing my knowledge with appropriate citations I would like to be a contributer to Edit exact and accurate information on the pages of Wikipedia. I hope you would give me a chance to be my mentor and help me in contributing to Wikipedia.

Interested in being adopted as a new user edit

Hi Carole, would really appreciate your help in learning the ropes in order to improve the article about the artist Alexander Bogen. cheers, tali --Bogenf (talk) 12:11, 9 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Bogenf:
Sounds good, sure I'd be happy to help! I'll post some thoughts on the Talk:Alexander Bogen.
I am wondering if you're related to Alexander Bogen. If so, this is a Conflict of interest - and we can manage it according to option 3: "it can be managed, with or without disclosure – for example, P might ask people to watch closely when she does anything where her judgment could be affected by the conflict." It would be good to disclose it using Template:COI on the talk page.
How would you like to proceed? For instance, I could add some suggestions and thoughts on the talk page... or you may have ideas about next steps.--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:54, 9 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
@CaroleHenson:

Thank you Carole! and sorry for the delay of response - i'm such a novice here and for some reason it seemed my ip got blocked - i hope i didn't do anything wrong just yet.. anyhow, i am indeed related to Bogen and would like to go about it the proper way as you suggested, i'd just rather keep my communications as private as possible - is there a way? i really don't know where to start - i'm in the process of trying to compile and unify all the information online, which proves a little complicated since Bogen was notable in several different languages, places and capacities.

i would appreciate all your suggestions and thoughts - the only step i am aware of being of concern is that since i started adding more accurate info to the article - the google search sidebar (which inaccuracy was why i got into Wiki in the first place) disappeared and i'd really like to repair that asap but don't seem to get how it works.. thank you so much --Bogenf (talk) 15:31, 10 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Bogenf:,
Your IP address could be blocked it is a shared IP, like in a university, etc. - and someone else was making unconstructive edits. If you've just started and haven't been making edits, I don't know.
We could set up a work page, like User:Bogenf/Alexander Bogen work page or User:Bogenf/work page, and then communicate there regarding next steps, etc. How does that sound?
I don't know anything about how to get your google search sidebar back. If it was me, I would google - words something like: return google sidebar... or check "options" or a similar menu item from your internet browser.
It's good to hear from you again!--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:42, 10 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

GA Cup -Round 1 Newsletter edit

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 1

As we move into the middle of Round 1, we wanted to report some of the lessons we've learned thus far, as well as announce a major rule change going into Round 2, which begins November 1. Remember, sign-ups for this year's Cup ends on September 15.

Thus far, we're very happy with the results of the competition. One of our major goals, reducing the long backlog at GAN, is well on the way to being accomplished, mostly due to the enthusiastic efforts of Jonas Vinther, who has earned over 250 points. Over 80 reviews have been made thus far. Thank you all for your efforts and for your part in making the GA Cup a success.

However, this is the inaugural year of the GA Cup, so there have been some unforeseen circumstances that have come up. One has been a glaring inadequacy with the rules, which the judges feel makes the competition unfair. As a result, there will be a major change in the rules, starting at the beginning of Round 2:

  • Your review must provide feedback/suggestions for improvement, and then you must wait until the nominator has responded and all issues/suggestions have been resolved before you can pass the article. Failure to follow this rule will result in disqualification.

What this means is that you must provide some feedback to the article's nominator, and must wait for him or her to respond before passing the article. If the nominator has not responded in the standard 7 days, you can fail the article. We're instituting this rule change to prevent the possibility of competitors passing articles for the sake of passing articles (or failing them) and to gain more points. We believe that the change will make it more fair to all competitors in the GA Cup.

Also, in case you haven't noticed, we increased the "guarantee" for Round 2 to 25 participants. The exact number will be decided in the near future.

We thank your for your participation, and for your flexibility and understanding as we learn what works and what doesn't work in this competition.

Online Ambassador edit

Hey Carole,

This is Protonk, wearing my Wiki Edu hat. I was wondering if you'd be interested in being an online ambassador for a course this term at UMD. I figure it's up your alley, focusing on women and art and I think you've done a great job reviewing and creating articles in that general topic area. Is that something that might interest you? Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:49, 12 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Protonk and Adam (Wiki Ed):,
It's possible, sounds like an interesting class. What would be the level of commitment - hours per week? hours per day?
Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 02:44, 13 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
It's on the order of hours per week. The drafts should be up in sandboxes by the 29th and are due to be moved to the mainspace on november 12th--so mostly in that week and a half period. There are a fair number of students but the prof is shooting for relatively short articles. You're not obligated to review all of them, of course. :) If this sounds interesting to you please fill out an application here and mention I sent you. Once you've done that I'll email the prof and she can get in touch with you. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:10, 13 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hey Carole. Sorry to pester, but the more I look at it the more I realize you're literally the perfect wikipedian for this course. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:25, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Adam (Wiki Ed): I have been thinking about it. Did you mean to add a number to "It's on the order of hours per week."? --CaroleHenson (talk) 18:11, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
From what I saw on the online ambassador's page it doesn't seem to be too much. I applied and asked for your endorsement on your User talk:Protonk page, but perhaps the Adam (Wiki Ed) username would be better.--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:30, 15 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

next steps edit

I would recommend you take a look at the online training. It's a good baseline for even experienced editors to see what the program expects as a baseline. Once you've done that I should have heard back from the professor and someone should have given you the online ambassador user right. Then you can just sign up on the course page. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:02, 17 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thanks! Sounds good.--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:11, 17 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Adam (Wiki Ed): Ok, done. It looks like the semester for the class began in September, but there's just been a little bit of work done on Wikipedia by the students - and some students don't have a sandbox setup. Is the class behind, or did "Week 1" for the Wiki portion of the class start within the past week or two?
One person had an article, so I set myself up as a reviewer... it didn't look like they needed to be an ambassador. Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:09, 18 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Thank you for your recent edit of National Academy of Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Images in Lucy May Stanton edit

Hi Carole. Great work on expanding the article. Just a note about the images in that article. I reverted your changes to the licensing of File:Lucy May Stanton.jpg. Date of creation of an image is not the same as date of publication. There's no proof of publication before 1923 (at least none that I could find before I uploaded it). The photographer is uncredited. Hence his/her date of death is unknown. Thus at the earliest, it becomes public domain in 2020. However, the image was definitely published in 2002, and if no earlier publication can be found, nor the death date of the author, it is still in copyright until 2047. Since it's uploaded under fair use, it will soon be deleted because it is no longer used in the article. For more information see Commons:Hirtle chart.

The reason I hadn't originally uploaded and used her self-portrait (File:Lucy May Stanton, Self-portrait, 1912, National Portrait Gallery.jpg) is that once again, there is no evidence that it was published (as opposed to created) prior to 1923. It was definitely published in 1975 (with a copyright notice) in Lucy M. Stanton - Artist by Forbes, W. Stanton (published by Emory University). Given that she died in 1931, the earliest the painting would come into the public domain is 2026. You may find that the self-portrait will eventually be deleted from Commons. If it is, you can re-upload it to English Wikipedia under fair use. It will have to be in a much smaller resolution and you'll need to write a fair use rationale for it. Criteria for GA edit

I'm not sure what the criteria are for GA, but looking at a couple you passed, they must be pretty low. Just recently, Maribojoc Church. Apart from the excessive WP:OVERLINKing and the dodgy grammar, my main surprise is that the article relies almost exclusively on just two sources - some sort of textbook
Jose, Regalado Trota (2001). Visita Iglesia Bohol (A Guide to Historic Churches). Manila: National Commission for Culture and the Arts. ISBN 9718140166.
and the website of the LGU. If you'd looked at this site you would see that it too relies heavily on Jose. Further, there is one section, which I just tagged {{cn}}, which apparently quotes a 1749 work in support of an 1878 building.

Another work you passed GA, in fact connected to this and by the same author, shares all the same faults – Punta Cruz Watchtower. In particular it includes the phrase "perfect isosceles triangle" without any explanation of what that may be. In fact the phrase was lifted from the LGU web site but attributable to Jose. That doesn't tell me what it is, nor does the wikipage Isosceles triangle. It seems to me you're too ready to heap praise where it isn't entirely due. Hi, Carole. Search "dear" here for the letter I use. I have sent many emails, and have around a 50% success rate. I find both the subjects and their agents to be very responsive. Best wishes, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 23:26, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

WMST 250: Women, Art, and Culture edit

I'm Avery Dame, the instructor for Women, Art, and Culture. I just wanted to get in touch in case you had any questions about the assignment, what to expect next week, the class itself, etc. As of right now, I'm working on making sure students' drafts will be uniform, properly formatted, and all in the right location. (There is one student who completed her article beforehand, and I've added hers to her account on the course page as a test case, but otherwise all articles will be posted to students' sandboxes.) Or if you don't want to clutter your/my talk page with a long conversation, just shoot me an email: adame AT umd.edu. Apdame (talk) 17:53, 22 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Avery, Thanks for checking in. When you say that you want the student's drafts to be uniform - is there something that you're using as a standard?
I made some comments on one article talk page, so it must have been the one you mentioned. I've been off a couple of days, but I will take a look at some of the sandbox pages.--CaroleHenson (talk) 21:39, 26 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
No problem! Ideally, they're based on the mockup in my sandbox - so several informative, properly titled and cited sections. Additionally, some students will be editing existing pages that were created as they worked on the assignment, and those pages should be appropriately marked. These are my general grading criteria. - Apdame (talk) 17:48, 29 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Avery, both the sandbox and the grading criteria helps a lot! Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 20:41, 29 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

GA Cup - Round 2 edit

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 2

Greetings, GA Cup competitors!

Wednesday saw the end of Round 1. Jaguar took out Round 1 with an amazing score of 238. In a tight race for second, Peacemaker67 and Ritchie333 finished second and third with 152 and 141 points, respectively.

Two users have scored the maximum five bonus points for article length (60,000 characters+). Anotherclown reviewed Spanish conquest of Yucatán (77,350 characters) and MrWooHoo reviewed Communist Party of China (76,740 characters). The longest review was by Bilorv who reviewed Caldas da Rainha. The review was approximately 22,400 characters which earned s/he two bonus points (20, 000 - 29, 999 characters).

In Round 1, 117 reviews were completed, making the first round of the GA Cup a success! A total of 86 articles were removed from the backlog during the month of October! We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 2 so we can lower the backlog as much as possible.

To qualify for the second round, one completed review was needed, which 28 users accomplished. Participants have been randomly put into 7 pools of 4; the top 2 in each pool will move onto Round 3. There will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 15th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 2 will start on November 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on November 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 2 and the pools can be found here

Also, remember that a major rule change will go into affect starting on November 1, which marks the beginning of Round Two. Round 1 displayed a weakness in the rules, which we are correcting with this new rule. We believe that this change will make the competition more inherently fair. The new rule is: Your review must provide feedback/suggestions for improvement, and then you must wait until the nominator has responded and all issues/suggestions have been resolved before you can pass the article. Failure to follow this rule will result in disqualification. The judges will strictly enforce this new rule.

Good luck and remember to have fun!

Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant still competing, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Example article for tone/etc. edit

Hey Carole,

We've got the rubric from the professor for basic structure but I was wondering if you had a good example in mind from the articles you've improved for a short and straightforward biography of a living articles (or maybe more than one example). I'd like to be able to point students to an article in the topic area which is good but not good (so it doesn't appear too daunting). I was thinking something like Janise Yntema, but you may have another in mind. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:21, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Adam (Wiki Ed): When I've provided examples, I often try to find them by for the decade or pre-20th century and occupation. I've used Dorothe Engelbretsdotter, William Orcutt Cushing for hymn-writers; Anne Moncure Crane as an example of tone for a writer (although it is a longer article); Anita Berrizbeitia for a landscape architect... I only provide examples if there's an issue with tone, content, or formatting, but I should go back through some recent reviews - there's one in particular that would benefit by an example.
Genevieve Springston Lynch is short - not in sections, but I can take care of that quickly - and has a non-free image. Janise is really good, too! Thanks for that reminder!--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:52, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Lynch is not the best. I just added it because I remembered the non-free image. It's cleaned up, but Janise Yntema is a better example.--CaroleHenson (talk) 16:08, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. I'll use Yntema. Can I update your table as I go through? I won't mark articles as checked, just leave a note that I reviewed them in the "other" section & add an article link. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:14, 3 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Done...for now edit

I've worked through the remainder of User:CaroleHenson/Menu - Working on. I am trying to avoid editing articles with this account (I'm not 100% sure if that's required per COI, but I'm trying it out for the first semester to see if it is a significant impediment) so I didn't add any authority control templates, infoboxes, or tidy articles as you have been doing. Accordingly I didn't mark the "x" for the articles I've reviewed. You're not in any way required to (as you've already gone above and beyond) but I would appreciate it if you took a look at some of the articles I've reviewed briefly to see if they can be improved in that fashion. I want to thank you again for your help. You've been an incredible resource and you've made my job with this class much more manageable (as I've got a half dozen more going on simultaneously!). Thanks again. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:53, 6 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Adopt me? edit

I trying to add Zillow as a disambiguation of "Big Z"[1] but apparently I'm not following the rules. Not sure what the problem is. Help please :-)

The reference to Zillow as Big Z is more relevant now in modern times than any of the other references listed. When Kramer from Mad Money talks about "Big Z", he's not talking about any of those other characters that currently have disambiguation listing status for Big Z.

Benjamin Church House (Bristol, Rhode Island) edit

Sorry for the delay while I was almost entirely away from Wikipedia due to other concerns. I have fixed Benjamin Church House (Bristol, Rhode Island) and renominated the page. I removed the quotes and saw that you had already tweaked up the lead and short lead in on Mr. Church. I renominated it for GAN, but I was wondering if you would re-review it now that I have been able to address the issues you had. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 07:09, 15 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Carole edit

Thx for the barnstar! I'm really impressed by the work thats going on to train new editors. My interest was in the DNB list as we are very close from having every female notable in the DNB with a wiki article. I think this would be quite cool. I have signed up as a reviewer but my first urge is to fix things and not to describe the problem. For this reason I have been flitting over all the article to hopefully not complete an article that someone had just prepared themselves top complete. Impressed by your work. Thanks 22:50, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

My pleasure, it was great having someone take a big chunk out of reviewing the articles! I may go back to the DNB list later - I work on artists from the 19th century and earlier - and saw some on the list that could be interesting. Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 23:35, 15 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

FYI edit

Hi Carole! From what I've seen from our brief editing intersections, you are a smart, observant, patient and rational editor. For your info, this. I didn't mention my suspicions sooner because I didn't want to pollute your impressions, and you were doing a good job on the article. But, I did suspect this editor of questionable practices from the beginning, and his irrational bombastic responses to my "hey, can we better establish the subject's notability better?" questions suggested to my experienced eye that there was a problem. Thank you for improving the article. Not exactly sure what should be done. Technically, if he was blocked as a sock of an indeffed user, we could nom the article per G5 criteria of WP:CSD. I'm interested in your thoughts. Also, as I sift through some of the other info related to this editor, I regret not mentioning the SPI report sooner, as I just discovered that you brought him to Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard, and I might've pitched in there. Oh well... Cyphoidbomb (talk) 06:51, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cyphoidbomb, It's good to see resolution! Thanks for your observant eye and attention - great job.
I don't have a strong feeling one way or another about whether the article should be deleted. If you think that's best, I trust your judgment.

CaroleHenson it's me Kristine edit

Does the category I created Category:People_from_the_Inuvik_Region make sense to you? Can you tell me if it should be deleted? Venustar84 (talk) 18:25, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kristine,
Yes, that category makes sense to me. Is there a reason that you removed it from the Category:People from the Northwest Territories? Is there a category for Inuvik Region it could also be attached to?
Then, People from the Northwest Territories needs to be attached to something, I assume that there's a category for Northwest Territories.--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:42, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oops, part of the reason I said yes was because there were a number of people in subcategories and the category - now there are just two people. I'm not sure what's happening.--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:44, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ah, just figured it out, I just saw that the two subcategories fall under Category:People by city or town in the Northwest Territories.
If you think that there are more than a few people that would fall into the Category:People from the Inuvik Region (i.e., there's not a city/town specific category for people living in the Inuvik Region), then I personally don't see an issue with having a category for people in the Inuvik Region that would be linked to People in the Northwest Territories.
But, if there's not likely to be more than just a couple of people, then creating that category becomes an excessive use of categories/subcategories. Does that make sense?--CaroleHenson (talk) 19:41, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Carole would you mind create the category for me; because I'm not suppose to do it? Venustar84 (talk) 21:43, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Kristine, I saw that on your talk page. Based on those comments alone + considering it doesn't seem that there would be a flood of articles that would fall into the category, and the "people from" is already being managed under the cities and towns category - it doesn't seem at all prudent to create the categories.
I get that's been your interest for awhile to create categories - and I think I've asked before what about it captivates your interest? Why do you feel it's important to do? I ask this because maybe there's a way to funnel that interest in a way that makes you happy + meets Wikipedia goals and guidelines.--CaroleHenson (talk) 21:55, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I feel interested in the north and the arctic since I am Canadian. I feel the regions of the Northwest territories apply since Wikipedia does the same for categorizing people from Nunavut regions. I also feel your judgement is very helpful and useful and you are a very good mentor. But I don't want to infringe on Wikipedia guidelines by creating categories. Venustar84 (talk) 22:23, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Kristine, Your interest in the Northwest territories of Canada is very interesting. I bet that there's a way to expand upon or create an article, list or outline of that area - which would have to meet guidelines - that might be interesting for you. I could scope some options to run by you, if you'd like.--CaroleHenson (talk) 22:32, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Carole are you and tito upset? Venustar84 (talk) 22:41, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm fine, I just explained the reason to Tito. I understand the confusion.
Want to explore some options - other than categories - regarding the Northwest territories?--CaroleHenson (talk) 22:49, 16 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to start drafting something in your sandbox, if you'd like. I'm happy to help out.--CaroleHenson (talk) 04:39, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Uh, Carole do you think you could start the article of notable people from the north west territories and I'll add to it? edit

I don't want to get in trouble with Wikipedia because I might be banned from creating articles. By the way Carole are you female Venustar84 (talk) 18:19, 17 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yep, we can work together on this. Absolutely. How about if we start in my sandbox and we'll move it to article space when it's finished / nearly finshed. Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews edit

Hello CaroleHenson. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).Reply

reply edit

Hi Carole, re your enquiry. Did you notice the rephrasing? If Ive missed something then can you fix it? I'm not happy seeing copyvios on wp. I prefer to hide, remove or fix. In this case I suspect in may have come from the dnb and not the odnb so it it maybe only poor practise rather than a copyright violation. I am a bit concerned that the authors think that their work is done as they seem to give up after it moves to main space. I hope they want to do more than just get some course credit points eventually. Victuallers (talk) 21:17, 18 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Victuallers, Yep, I was checking the oxford link which is also the citation - I went ahead and made some additional edits for portions that looked to be copied from Oxford. So, that article looks better now.
You have such a good point about the activity by students settling way down since the articles were moved from the user's sandboxes to article space - and that these issues should be resolved one way or another!
Adam (Wiki Ed) and Victuallers, do you have a take as to what should be done with articles that have copyright violation / close paraphrasing issues (e.g., remove the copyright violations, reword the articles with violations). I believe there are 12 articles remaining with these issues, the worst of which have tags on the article.--CaroleHenson (talk) 21:53, 18 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think that if the stuff is from a web site that has a legitimate copyright claim (ie not usually dnb or npg, but all odnb stuff (that is not in the dnb)) then we need to fix or remove immediately. This is a crime that the student may be unaware of but we can see the mistake and I dont believe we can justify the republication of other peoples stuff to improve the learning of one student. We can just comment it out if we want to leave it for the student to fix. Victuallers (talk) 22:18, 18 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
VictuallersI got lost a bit in the acronym sentence. But I get the point about removing copyrighted content. I am pretty sure that I checked that everything that was tagged as CP / copyright vio was an issue based upon date of publication and copyright tags on the pages. If there are nuances, though, that I'm missing (i.e., something looks like it's still under copyright, but isn't), please let me know.
I like the idea of commented the content out. I'll get to work on it. Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 22:54, 18 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
DNB = Dictionary of National Biography (out of copyright), ODNB = Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (updated version of DNB and copyright) The articles here are also using the Oxford Ref which is also copyright and a cut down version of ODNB. NPG = National Portrait Gallery in London - Some copyright but lots that are out of copyright but they claim that taking a picture means that its a new piece of copyright... ummm no. Victuallers (talk) 23:52, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I hadn't made those connections - I just check the publication / copyright dates. Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 00:14, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Annie Swynnerton edit

Hi, great work expanding the Swynnerton article but I think you'll find that the ONDB reference to her place of birth as Hulme was correct. I know you have referenced Kersal, but the book appears to be wrong. I have Wikipedia Library access to Findmypast and looked to check which was right. There is only one Annie Louisa Robinson born in 1884 and that was in Chorlton which includes Hulme. I don't know if you have access but you can check here. Hope you don't mind. J3Mrs (talk) 09:30, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi J3Mrs, This is my first experience with Findmypast, but it appears to be a good source for verifying date of birth information, per a posting on WP:RSN. There is also a disclaimer, though, on the page that there may be transcription errors.
As an FYI, that you may be well-aware of, I have seen sources that she was from Salford, Kersal, and Hulme... mostly Kersal.
It does seem that the Oxford DNB would be a solid source - for Hulme - backed up by Chorlton from Findmypast - for a Chorlton/Hulme conclusion. I'm just a little perplexed why Kersal shows up often. Do you know?--CaroleHenson (talk) 11:07, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi J3Mrs, Oh, one more thing - Findmypast says she was born in March 1844, but there's a source that says she was born on 26 Feburary 1844. Do you have any insight into this? Thanks so much!--CaroleHenson (talk) 11:10, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Births in the UK are recorded on individual certificates but accumulated in registers that cover three-month periods. So, anyone born Jan-Mar will appear in one register, Apr-Jun in the next, and so on. The certificate gives the exact date, the register just gives you a quarter month. - Sitush (talk) 11:12, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Eg: I was born 27 Nov. I appear in the Oct-Dec register for that year, which is sometimes just abbreviated to Dec. - Sitush (talk) 11:15, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sitush,
Thanks so much! It's funny, I was just thinking, "I wonder what Sitush would say about this?"
So, would you go with the approach to cite ODNB for Hulme and Findmypast for Chorlton - for place of birth - and a note with other source(s) that there are other recorded places (Kersal, perhaps Salford) of birth?
By the way, sorry for the confusion on place names on your talk page. I was "toasted" (translate in British English?) by the posting on your user page - and didn't see an article for the place name used by the poster.--CaroleHenson (talk) 11:24, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Go by the ODNB. The full date is indeed 26 Feb 1844 and it was Hulme. By 1861, she was living at Prestwich Park with her parents and siblings (and servants). PP is next door to Kersal and that may be where the confusion has arisen, although I'll check for you. PP is about two miles from me. Not looked at my talk page yet because your message appeared here as I opened up to edit. - Sitush (talk) 11:30, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oh, the reason that FMP shows Chorlton is because Chorlton is the registration district. Hulme is a place within the district. This must seem terribly complicated to you but it does work quite well most of the time. - Sitush (talk) 11:32, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
And "oh" again. When I say PP is a couple of miles away, I'm still not yet fully sync'd. I relocated quite a distance away recently because of the hassle from the India Against Corruption people but for the best part of 50 years before that, I was mostly within a couple of miles of it. - Sitush (talk) 11:37, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thanks that helps a lot in knowing how to word this. Yes, I get that the registration district might be different - we record things by county here. I wondered if that might have been how the Kersal connection came about

I am so sorry that you have had such a trying time with the work on articles for India! You may already know I have a mother-hen syndrome sometimes - and I wonder if it's the best interest for you to stay involved in that body of work. That's just a side comment from a friend who wishes the best for you. Of course, you know what's best for you.

Regarding my posting, you responded about two different articles that you were updating - I thought to clarify that I gave the wrong edit summary link / article to my posting.--CaroleHenson (talk) 11:44, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

1851 census shows the family at 44 Dover Street in the parish of Chorlton-on-Medlock (south Manchester); 1861 shows them at Prestwich Park, which is north Manchester; 1871 shows her lodging at a house in Upper Brook Street and with occupation of "artist". UB Street is centre/south Manchester. In the following year, rate books show her as the ratepayer (primary occupant) at 8 Burleigh Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock. And so it goes on. You probably cannot use this in the article (primary sources) but it is definitely her. None of this really helps with the Kersal issue but if you want to list the sources that say it, I'll try to figure it out. The chances are that one source made an error and subsequent ones repeated it.
India is driving me daft at the moment. I've got an article at FAC (William Beach Thomas) and that's the sort of thing I do to take my mind off Asia. Of course, I'm also in trouble with ArbCom and seem to have been tarred with the "misogynist" label by some members of the gender gap project. Grr. - Sitush (talk) 12:00, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I see Sitush beat me to it. Yes births are recorded in quarters so Feb is correct for the March Quarter. At the 1851 census the family was living in Dover Street Manchester (that's where the university is now) and in 1871 she was lodging in Upper Brook Street (round the corner from Dover Street) occupation given as artist along with her sisters, Emily, Julia (also artists) and Mary and Frances (scholars) (they're on the next page). I haven't really figured what to do with this FMP access apart from checking. J3Mrs (talk) 12:09, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Sitush and J3Mrs! I've updated the place of birth information - using the ODNB source for Hulme - and then have notes about Chorlton recording district and other named places. So, hopefully this makes it clear that Hulme/Chorlton is correct, but there are other cited places.
Thanks for the names of the other sisters, so that I can search on this and see if I can find secondary sources for where she lived / who she lived with.--CaroleHenson (talk) 12:14, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sitush I really like your article about William Beach Thomas - very interesting!--CaroleHenson (talk) 12:16, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I'm more than happy to collaborate with the pair of you. Obviously, Beach Thomas went to the "wrong" university and so I should have left him in obscurity ;) I'll take a look at the Swynnerton article later but my bet is J3 is already scouring the British Newspaper Archive. - Sitush (talk) 12:23, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I was able to do a search - and there are several obituaries, articles written when she was elected into the Royal Academy and more - but it's a subscription service.--CaroleHenson (talk) 15:33, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
J3Mrs and myself both have subscriptions to it. - Sitush (talk) 16:48, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
You can apply for Wikipedia:BNA or Wikipedia:FindMyPast, might take a while but worth it. There's a link on top of my watchlist page. I'll look at BNA for you tomorrow. J3Mrs (talk) 21:32, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Request for adoption edit

I would like to be adopted by you. I have edited dozens of Wikipedia articles such as Objectives Resolution and the two-nation theory. However, I am not good at technical things, such as adding photographs. As for my introduction, I studied international relations in Islamabad and media in London. I have worked as a copy editor for several English-language newspapers. In addition, I have written a book entitled 'Handbook of Functional English' (Ferozsons).--Shakil Chaudhary (talk) 16:46, 18 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Shakil Chaudhary You have an interesting background! Sure, I would be happy to. Do you have something that you're working on right now?--CaroleHenson (talk) 17:32, 18 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

My Lili Dujourie article edit

Hi! So will my page not be deleted? Also how do i add the page to a disambiguation list, or does it need to be added to one?--20:54, 25 November 2014‎ Sydneyp9856

Hi Sydneyp9856, no your article, Lili Dujourie will not be deleted.
But Wikipedia:Lili Dujourie and Lili Dujourie (English) will be deleted, but right now they are just redirects.
No, you don't need a disambig list. You're good to go!--CaroleHenson (talk) 03:59, 26 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

YOUR AWESOME THANKS!!

My pleasure!--CaroleHenson (talk) 04:20, 26 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

GA Cup - Round 3 edit

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 3

Greetings, all! We hope that all of our American GA Cup competitors had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday.

Friday saw the end of Round 2. Two from 7 pools, plus a tie score and one wildcard (16 in all) moved onto the next round. Some pools were more competitive than others. Round 2's highest scorer was 3family6, with an impressive 255 points. Good888, who came in second place overall with 202 points, reviewed the most articles (19). The wildcard slot for Round 2 went to Jaguar. Congrats to all!

Round 3 will have 15 competitors in three pools. The key to moving forward in Round 2 seemed to be reviewing articles with the longest nomination dates; almost everyone who moved forward nominated at least one article from the pink nomination box (20 points) or reviewed articles that had languished in the queue for over 5 months (18 points). The GA Cup was also used to promote a group of articles about The Boat Race, a rowing race held annually since 1856 between Oxford University and Cambridge University, on the River Thames. 17 Boat Race articles were promoted to GA in November.

In Round 2, 110 reviews were completed, as compared to 117 in Round 1. The GA Cup continues to be a success. This month, we got a report from User:AmericanLemming, who maintains the GA statistics, that in October, there was a net gain of 201 articles nominated for GA. He thought that more open GANs could mean that more editors are submitting more of their articles to the GAN process. In addition, having a high-throughput of GANs means that more articles get reviewed more quickly, which reduces the frustration of potentially waiting several months to get an article reviewed. The activity in Round 2 of the GA Cup seems to bear that out. It's our hope that the competitors' enthusiasm continues in Round 3, and we can continue to make a difference in helping more editors improve their articles.

For Round 3, participants have been randomly put in 3 pools of 5 contestants each; the top two in each pool progressing, as well as the top 2 of all remaining users. Round 3 will start on December 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on December 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 3 and the pools can be found here.

There have been a couple of rules clarifications to announce. We're slightly changing the wording to the second bullet in "General rules", which now reads: You may only score points in a round for reviews which have been completed in that round. We're also including this clarification: Only reviews started during the competition are eligible. We have also lost a judge, so there are now only three judges.

Good luck and remember to have fun as we move into the holiday season. It is the judges' hope that every competitor in the GA Cup has a joyous holiday season and Happy New Year.

Cheers from Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletter, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant still competing, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

General edit

Hi Carole! Sorry for the late reply. I know I've not been very vocal, but that's because I'm using my eyes more than anything. I'm making notes of all the various people who are springing up. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 20:44, 23 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Cyphoidbomb Thanks!--CaroleHenson (talk) 21:23, 23 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Cyphoidbomb - I am considering nominating this article for deletion based upon: 1) created by a banned user, 2) notability issues, and 3) ongoing attempts to filibuster and discredit editors when a contributor disagrees with consensus. Thoughts about that?--CaroleHenson (talk) 18:08, 28 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Carole! Sorry again for the delay. I'm not quite sure what is appropriate here. I think I'll poke WikiProject Visual Arts again to see if anyone is familiar with this person, assuming he exists. On the one hand we could absolutely delete based on an indeffed user recreating the article. On the other hand, the subject might be notable. This article seems like it should count as significant coverage. And before we open an AfD, we have to perform WP:BEFORE, part of which requires that we check Google News and Google Books. I don't see much about him. Has he won any noteworthy awards? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:43, 3 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
The WikiProject has been poked. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:57, 3 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
