Thank you today for Brothers Poem, "about a poem by the ancient Greek poet Sappho, discovered in 2014. It is the most recently-discovered of Sappho's poems, one of the best-preserved, and generated considerable excitement when it was first published both in academia and in the press."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:23, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi. I have revised my own role at Wikipedia:WikiProject History. I have added a note at the talk page to reflect this. Just wanted to let you know. thanks!!! --Sm8900 (talk) 15:45, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

Caecilius?

Just happened to notice your username for the first time. If you're at all familiar with Caecilius, either Lucius Caecilius Iucundus or Caecilius of Calacte, then the forces of rationality could use another voice at User talk:Charlie292929. It's probably just trolling, or at the least, the angriest bit of misunderstanding ever, and it's hardly worth the effort to waste time on, but still, anyone familiar with Caecilius is scarce enough. Thanks, Andy Dingley (talk) 21:55, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

@Andy Dingley: Oh, gosh, that looks like a mess. Yes, my name is a reference to L. Caecilius Iucundus, or at least his fictionalised self. I've not heard of Caecilius of Calacte, but he's pretty clearly a different person – I will see if I can add another voice of rationality to the mix... A kitten for you!

Thank you for all your excellent editing on women in antiquity! We'd love you to become more involved in the Women's Classical Committee on Wikipedia, if you would like; you would be very welcome. But in any case, thank you!!!

Srsval (talk) 13:00, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Thank you, Srsval! I do watch WP:WMCC, but my impression of it is that it is mainly focused on women classicists, whereas I mainly edit around women in antiquity (with a few exceptions more up WMCC's alley). But if I find myself editing on women classicists, I will definitely remember to make a note on the WMCC page. Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 14:40, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
:D With WP:WMCC, we do all sorts of women, and we'd love to diversify more so feel free to join us! We'll be editing together remotely on 22 January, 13.00-15.00 (GMT) if you're around; follow #WCCWiki on Twitter. Or feel free to get involved with the WP:WMCC project page. Disambiguation link notification for January 17

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Poetry of Sappho, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Eustathius (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Request help with new Council for WikiProjects

Hi. I am trying to create a forum where various WIkiProjects can exchange ideas and information about their best ideas, efforts, methods, and accomplishments. I am the Lead Coordinator at WikiProject History. I tried to create an active exchange at WikiProject Council, but did not get very far when I tried to do so.

I would like to get some interested editors together who might be interested in helping with this idea, either with getting WikiProject Council moving again, or creating a whole new WikiProject to do so.

You can sign up to help at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editors Forum/Members. Right now, this page is a redirect to a draft in my user space; we will move it to the project space as soon as we have ten people signed up.

eventually, the goal would be to have a few people from a wide variety of WikiProjects and varioous topical areas, working together at WIkiProject Council, to help us create a forum and an exchange for ideas and information.

Would you be interested in helping with this? Please let me know. If you wish, you can simply comment on my talk page to let me know any comments or thoughts on this. thanks!! --Sm8900 (talk) 02:42, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Coinissuer

I've taken Coinissuer to wp:ANI.--Ermenrich (talk) 19:42, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

@Ermenrich: ugh, I was hoping that they would engage productively on the talkpage, but so much for that. What a clusterfuck. Thanks for letting me know – I'll have a look over there Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 19:47, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're probably either the original person who added the section or else just really into this weird synth interpretation, likely for ideological/religious reasons. He's also speaking disparagingly of an admin for some reason. Some people just can't be reasoned with.--Ermenrich (talk) 19:51, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
Stuff like this actually strikes me as quite possibly being Vandalism, especially if you follow they link they provided (which does not support the form of the name they've added): [1]. The other weird name form "Pphsappho" is cited to the Attic Kalpis painting of Sappho by the Sappho Painter (c. 510 BCE), currently held in the National Museum, Warsaw ([2]). Looks like fake referencing to me.--Ermenrich (talk) 20:24, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
They're right that the Sappho painter's kalpis does indeed spell her name like that, but they aren't right that this demonstrates that it is the standard attic spelling: there are four classical attic vases which have her name inscribed, and at least three different spellings (yet more WP:OR, I note!). I've reverted that particular change. (In fact I think all of their edits to Sappho are at best pointless, and I'm sure it's a complete coincidence that after almost a year of editing pretty much only on the subject of Phanes, they've branched out into my most-edited article (with one attempt at reverting me on the topic of Sappho on another article, incidentally restoring text which contradicted the cited source)... Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 20:35, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
Actually, I take that back. Their rendering was "Πφσαπφώ", but the Sappho painter's is the rather more economical "Φσαφω"; they have a couple of extra π for no apparent reason. Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 20:41, 24 October 2021 (UTC)
Might be worth mentioning your suspicions as to why they suddenly started editing Sappho at ANI.--Ermenrich (talk) 20:42, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Requesting some article expansion help

Hi,

Shifting comment from User talk:Caeciliusinhorto-public, sincere apologies if you have already gone through this and happens to be repetitive in that case feel free to ignore.

I am Bookku. I do promote content expansion in topics having information gaps. Requesting your visit to Draft:Sexual politics, Draft:Women, conflict and conflict zones and help content expansion if you find the topic interested in.

It seems you focus mainly on women in the ancient Greek. I have worked on Draft:Avret Esir Pazarları an article focusing on non-elite common women slavery in ottoman times. I know it is not ancient enough, one Greek Wikipedian has helped out with Greek sources, but you seem to be a good reader and by chance you are having any more sources you may help the article with inputs.

Last but not least I am looking for inputs to know how far an article on topic Draft:Female slavery in Al-Andalus would be feasible.

Looking forward to your inputs

Thanks and warm regards

Thanks @Bookku. I've had a look, and I'm afraid it's all a bit modern for me! If I'm active when you're ready to move Draft:Avret Esir Pazarları into mainspace drop me a note and I'll do a bit of a copyedit if that would be helpful, though Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 22:40, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

You're welcome! The relevant guideline is hidden away in WP:Subcat:

Category chains formed by parent–child relationships should never form closed loops; that is, no category should be contained as a subcategory of one of its own subcategories.

I was surprised at how much we have on Hemings! Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 13:21, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
  • I didn't realize myself until I made an article on a novel about her and Jefferson, honestly. There's more out there but it's more descendants - those would typically be covered by the overall family category, right? I'm using Jefferson's categories as a bit of a guideline as far as what I should have or add it to. ReaderofthePack(formerly Tokyogirl79) (。◕‿◕。) 12:08, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

Kottabos

Dear Friend,

thank you for your edit. But you did not give me time to create a dp, and a further page on the journal. So I will continue, and reverse your edit. Many greetings, --Dick Bos (talk) 10:03, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

@Dick Bos: even if you create a page for the journal, a simple search for "kottabos" demonstrates that the game is the clear primary topic; even googling kottabos "journal" gets me results about the game rather than the journal! Per WP:ONEOTHER, in such cases there is no need for a disambiguation page. At any rate, there is no need to disambiguate Kottabos until any ambiguous article exists, so at the very least you need to create Kottabos (journal) before you start moving Kottabos around. Internet Archive Scholar vs. JSTOR

Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up. Thanks, Nemo 19:06, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

@Nemo bis: I vaguely knew that IA Scholar existed, but I have never used it. Trying it out quickly looking for sources for an article on my to-do list, I find that I get somewhat worse results than Google Scholar - more irrelevant results, more outdated articles, and several microfilm scans of articles where you don't get told the article title or author in the search results, which is rather less helpful than the metadata given on g!scholar. On the other hand, I do get some good results on the first page which don't come up on the first page of g!scholar's results, so I'd certainly consider it as a supplement. Based on the (single!) search I have tried so far, though, it isn't ready to replace g!Scholar as my first port of call yet. Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 19:24, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for trying. I see where you're coming from: Google Scholar has a very comprehensive index and its full text searches tend to be quite good most of the time. I often use it as first stop, but sometimes when I'm looking for something very specific it's infuriatingly hard to make it do what I want, for instance if you ask for two exact search terms it may return results containing only one and you have to go through a bunch of irrelevant results. Maybe it's just me though! Nemo 21:43, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll definitely have to spend a bit more time with the IA scholar search and see how it works in other situations – when I've tested it more thoroughly I might have more thoughts! Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 21:58, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

Since finishing Wicked, I've been working on other related articles, including the one for Gregory Maguire himself. In the process, I discovered that the bio page of Maguire's own website points to his Wikipedia article! I made a new talk page section admonishing future editors to be mindful of this, but could that also make his article a candidate for protection? I feel like we have something of a responsibility now. Just Another Cringy Username (talk) 04:16, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

I don't have any experience with page protection, but my understanding is that we don't protect articles preemptively - there needs to be an active problem to justify it. I wouldn't expect the fact that Maguire links to it on his website is sufficient to justify it - but for a definitive answer, you'd have to ask an admin. Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 12:50, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
I've submitted it for a Class B evaluation. Just Another Cringy Username (talk) 20:13, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

CLODO review

@Caeciliusinhorto:, I've been on hiatus for the last few months due to a mix of school and stress. I've returned now and seek to finally finish my work on the CLODO article. Would you be free to give it a second pass? (ping me if you want a full GA review opened, its really up to you). It appears I misinterpreted 2 of the sources and it messed up a good chuck of the article.

On a different note, going forward with GA reviews, can you please give the reviewee an opportunity to respond before failing a page (the concerns raised in the first review only required about 2-3 hours to correct). This is merely a suggestion however, I know it is not required and I disappeared for a few months anyway. The image concern may require elaboration since it appears to be a 'copy-left' release. I may do some more clean-up but the page has been substantially improved. Thank you for reviewing the page the first time, you caught a some major (and frankly, very obvious in hindsight) errors that the pre-review and myself had missed. Cheers Etriusus 03:22, 10 May 2022 (UTC)

@Etriusus: I'm busy at the moment, so I'm not about to give it a full review right now, but if nobody has taken up the GA review by next month I will try to find time to look at it. I've glanced over it and given it a quick copyedit in the meantime. Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 09:04, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Women in Green - July GA Editathon

Hi Caeciliusinhorto -- just touching base about the July WiG editathon, which is now open to signups. The 20-minute article assessments (or "mini-reviews") are intended to help less experienced editors avoid quick-fail scenarios with their GA nominations. When replying to an assessment request, all you need to focus on is whether an article has any major issues remaining that might pose problems (you're not required to do a full in-depth article review!). If you like, you can add the assessment requests page to your watchlist for convenience, but you can also respond to requests via the main July editathon event page. Let me know if you have any questions -- you can of course also sign up as a regular editathon participant. Thanks for your help! Alanna the Brave (talk) 14:19, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks Alanna! I have watchlisted the requests page :)
I probably won't nominate anything for a GA during the editathon due to a combination of out-of-wikipedia commitments and my wikipedian projects at the moment not being super GA-focused, but I will consider signing up. Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 15:54, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

November songs

Thank you today for the article, introduced: Corinna is, after Sappho, the ancient Greek woman poet with the most surviving fragments, so we know almost nothing about her, rather than absolutely nothing. Three fairly substantial fragments of her poetry survive, and her works preserve versions of Greek myths not otherwise attested. Despite this, the main scholarly interest in Corinna over the past century has been the surprisingly contentious debate about when she actually lived – despite this being the one fact about her life which is unanimously agreed upon by the ancient sources! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:11, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

Why are you deleting Witches Reel page? It's fine!

I am not sure who you are, at all, but please leave my page alone. The Witches Reel is an excellent dance that we do every night at Scottish ceilidhs. Thank you. Iain 82.69.27.177 (talk) 12:39, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

It may very well be an excellent dance (in fact, it may very well be several excellent dances: I found at least three different dances under the name "Witches Reel"), but there are many excellent dances which do not have and do not need wikipedia articles. I have nominated it for deletion for the reasons explained in the nomination. If you think that the dance is notable and the article should be kept, the best thing for you to do would be to find evidence of in-depth coverage of it in reliable secondary sources, and make an argument in the AfD discussion that it meets Wikipedia's inclusion criteria. Nice work, thank you. You may notice similar problems at all the articles edited by User:Classic Middlesex (e.g. Colin Campbell & Steve Wright) and the various associated sockpuppet accounts. Just an editor to be aware of.... 10mmsocket (talk) 11:43, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

There's plenty of crap to be cleared out of wikipedia's coverage of recent crime, and at least in the UK BO/CM is responsible for way too much of it... I have nominated Henry Moore for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" in regards to the article's featured status. Unsolved murders

Why did you remove Plomo Mummy and Momia Juanita from the list and claim that they are not unsolved murders? Clearly they were murdered and it is not known who did so. Davidgoodheart (talk) 18:03, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

@Davidgoodheart: It's not at all clear that either was murdered. Both were apparently victims of human sacrifice. State-sanctioned killings are not usually considered murders. Neither article describes the killing as a murder. The sources cited in the List of unsolved murders article didn't describe them as murders.
As for "unsolved": it is unsolved only in the sense that we don't know the names of the people who killed them. It's not a mystery: we know that it was a state organised ritual carried out by priests. We know who in general carried out the killing, how, and why.
