Boise State hoops picture request

Hi - I was looking at some of your pictures at the 2012–13 Boise State Broncos men's basketball team article and I was wondering if you might have an opportunity to take a picture or two at a BSU game this year. Both the Leon Rice and John Rillie articles are missing photos. If you are at a game and get a chance, could you take and upload pictures of them? Rillie was a significant figure in Australian basketball prior to his coaching career and I just made some updates to his article. If you don't get the chance, no problem, but the photos would make the articles better so I thought I would ask. I have been taking more photos for WP lately - most recently Shaka Smart. Thanks! I have been trying to get a picture to put on Leon Rice's page for 3 years now. Problem is my seats are normally behind the bench so I never get a good front shot of him. And its not like I ever have a good camera either. All the pictures on Boise State's page last year are just from my iPhone. So yes I will try. Alternate character instead of hyphen in basketball scores?

1990 NIT

I saw you edited the score of the 1990 NIT basketball game between Louisiana Tech and Vanderbilt by adding 98 as one of the scores. I left that blank because there are a lot of conflicting sources regarding that score. Some say 96. Some say 98. Some say overtime. Is there a way to verify what the score actually was? Don't know why you deleted my comment. There are many sources that show both scores. For example see bbstate.com that shows 96-90. Also, I've come across many errors in the Louisiana Tech media guide. That is not a definitive source. -AllisonFoley (talk) 01:10, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

Because those media guides were printed in 2013, not 1990. That makes them secondary resources. I know for a fact there are numerous errors in Tech's media guide, some of them major. I'm not getting angry about it. I just find it absolutely insane that the media guides for both schools have the score as 98-90 yet you do not consider that a primary source. If you want to make the argument that their media guide has as many errors as you say then how can you be sure that any of the scores for any games are correct? The absolute fact is that both schools, the actual participants in the game, say the game was 98-90. Outside of having a picture of the final score board that is all the proof needed to prove the game was 98-90. If the schools themselves have no dispute on the score then there flat should not be a dispute at all. The game was 98-90 regardless of what you might think. Criteria for Removal of Polls from Football Team Pages

I'm working on finalizing some of the 2014 team pages. In the interest of consistency, what is the criteria used for removal of the poll section? The basis for the question revolves around a team page I just completed vs. the next page I was going to work on...

The poll section for the 2014 Lamar Cardinals team page was removed on October 13 with the notation of "not ranked, have not been ranked, no need for that table until actually ranked" which is correct if ranking is the sole criteria and if historical information was readily accessible. One problem I am finding is that it is difficult to reconstruct after the fact in at least one of the polls, The Sporting Network FCS poll. I did find a historical source for the FCS Coaches Poll.

I've noticed several other team pages including several others in the Southland Conference which still have the poll section without being ranked during the season, but were receiving votes in at least one of the other FCS polls. That was the same situation as the Cardinals. (The Cardinals had received votes a couple of weeks before removal as well as receiving votes in the same week the section was removed and several weeks including this week's poll.) Although never receiving enough votes to be ranked, the Cardinals actually finished the season receiving more votes than at least one other team which still has the section on their page.

Based on the above, what should be the criteria to use when reviewing the pages?

There is no actual criteria, I just think that if a team was never ranked then why have an entire table that just says NR or RV? Receiving a few votes in the polls should not warrant an entire just for that. So if you want to leave them there then I guess it's fine, It just really seems unnecessary. I just discovered your issue also involves 2013–14 Boise State Broncos men's basketball team, and not just the 2014–15 article. I see you started a discussion at Talk:2013–14 Boise State Broncos men's basketball team all the way back in January 2014. It is acceptable to assume consensus through WP:SILENCE, but it's usually better to bring the WikiProject or other dispute resolution alternatives in if unexplained reverts persist. You don't want to get nailed for edit warring, even though you are the only one that is actually trying to discuss things. I understand this can be frustrating. I usually add in the edit summary something like "per link to discussion" when I revert, and add some note about "assuming agreement per WP:SILENCE" on the talk page. Still, when I've reverted a few times, I generally bring in the related WikiProjects to see if there is a stronger consensus. If the other editor doesn't cooperate, WP:AN3 really is the best venue. It's sometimes difficult to convince a non-sports person what is really "vandalism", but anyone can look at reverts without knowing the subject and identify edit warring. Good luck. Cleveland State

Just FYI, I replaced the CSU 50th anniversary after another editor had used the same logo for both the Cleveland State Vikings men's basketball and Cleveland State University pages (that I subsequently reverted). It was more for a compromise than anything. I personally don't mind it not being on the season article either, though have seen similar logos used on other articles. I used Kent State's centennial logo for the seasons that included 2010 even though none of those seasons were the team's respective centennial. The logo was frequently used during the seasons for all sports, even though it did not replace the regular version. It really depends how CSU uses it on their own materials, and it currently doesn't appear to have much of any usage on the athletic site. --JonRidinger (talk) 20:49, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Buffalo Bulls

The source you added for "New York Bulls" doesn't actually state that the team is also known as the New York Bulls, it simply mentions the "New York Bulls Initiative", which is now almost 2 years old. I have added some things at Talk:Buffalo Bulls#New York Bulls when you have a moment to check them. The only reason I added it was to shut up the guy that keeps adding New York Bulls to Buffalo's pages. I didn't want to start an edit war, because I don't think it should be there, and I thought that may work so the guy would stop. He's the one who gave me the source. Frankly, I don't think it should ever be added. They don't go by that. Nobody knows them as that. Short turnaround on MBB schedule inputs

I just use a lot of copy and pasting. Have the previous years schedule open on the edit screen so you can quickly search for stadium names or city names to copy. You can even just copy the teams links as long as you change the year. Non-conference game asterisk

BSU colors

Hey, they reason I changed the text color in the Boise State schedule headers is that a while back I was told that you shouldn't use color-on-color text because it presents problems for color blind people. That's why Template:Boise State Broncos men's basketball navbox is white-on-blue with an orange border instead of orange-on-blue. At least that is my perception. College Basketball headers

I think headers are still okay to do even if a few non-conference games are in there - there is still the asterisk to denote non-conference games.

• No. If the header says "Ivy League regular season" that implies that all the games under that header are Ivy League games. With nonconference games under the header it makes it confusing, asterisks or not. So please do not readd the headers unless its all nonconference games under the nonconference header and all conference games under the conference header. reverting edits

If you want to revert someone's edits, please learn to use the damn edit summary. Yes, I now realize I had made a mistake, but just one edit summary would've have been useful. Recent edits

Hi Bsuorangecrush - Here's why I made the changes I did.

1. Removing links to well-known locations, such as New York City and Spain. (see Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Linking#What_generally_should_not_be_linked).
2. Avoiding state abbreviations (see Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Abbreviations#Special_considerations)

State abbreviations are permitted where space is limited, but that isn't the case here, there's plenty of room. Why would you insist on abbreviating states when there's no need for it? It just makes life harder for readers without providing any benefit.

1. Fixing (simplifying) links to venues:

The names of venues tend to change because of sponsorship deals with naming rights. A redirect provides a simple way to ensure that all links to an old name will go to the article under the current name. Piping an old name to the current name is pointless because if the name changes again, as it surely will when the current sponsorship deal comes to an end, the piped name will itself become a redirect and the already trivial benefit of a direct link will be lost. This has already happened in several cases - for example [[Baltimore Arena|1st Mariner Arena]] simply pipes the name to another name which has since been superseded, and is now itself a redirect.

Here are some relevant extracts from guides to best practice in piping and redirects:

1. From Wikipedia:Piped_link#When_not_to_use:

• It is generally not good practice to pipe links simply to avoid redirects. The number of links to a redirect page can be a useful gauge of when it would be helpful to spin off a subtopic of an article into its own page.
• Introducing unnecessary invisible text makes the article more difficult to read in page source form.
• Non-piped links make better use of the "what links here" tool, making it easier to track how articles are linked and helping with large-scale changes to links.

1. From Wikipedia:Redirect#Do_not_.22fix.22_links_to_redirects_that_are_not_broken:

• There is usually nothing wrong with linking to redirects to articles. Some editors are tempted, upon finding a link to a redirect page, to bypass the redirect and point the link directly at the target page. While there are a limited number of cases where this is beneficial, there is otherwise no good reason to pipe links solely to avoid redirects. Doing so is generally an unhelpful, time-wasting exercise that can actually be detrimental. It is almost never helpful to replace [[redirect]] with [[target|redirect]].

Bsuorangecrush, thanks for all your work creating and udpating college sports seasons. One thing to watch out for is compound adjectives. When you write "The Runnin' Bulldogs, led by fourth-year head coach Tim Craft, play their home games...", "fourth-year" needs to be hyphenated since it is a compound adjective. Football TV

The 2016 UTSA Louisiana Tech football game was televised on three local TV stations KMYS in San Antonio, KPXJ in Shreveport, and KNOE-CW in Monroe and then streamed on ESPN3 for all other markets. IPFW athletic rebranding as Fort Wayne

The 2016–17 Summit League basketball template should now use "Fort Wayne" instead of "IPFW". The athletic program article was moved to Fort Wayne Mastodons per this discussion. Just want to ask you about what appears to have been a lot of back-and-forth editing about whether they are actually national champs--which side you fall on, how often you had to go back and delete what was there, if you guys were discussing this among yourselves at all or more working independently, that sort of thing. There is a talk page at Talk:UCF Knights football/Archive 1#National championship?. I looks like most of the claims of them being national champions have been added by fans who have little to no Wikipedia experience and just add whatever they want, which is part of the problem with wikipedia. To me it all comes down to formatting. Most season articles don't have their "claimed" titles in the info box and in this instance I don't think that a national title proclaimed by one paper in Maryland or Virginia or wherever it is is enough to claim a nation title. I've had to go back and delete it several times, mostly yesterday when it was in the news the most. Seems like the page is protected now so only verified users can edit it. I feel that it is completely asinine for them to think they are national champions. As a Boise State fan, I've been through this twice with undefeated seasons yet our fan base and our school never claimed we were champs, even though one selector did pick us as champs in 2006 (I can't remember which one). They should act like adults and appreciate the success they have earned instead of proclaiming themselves better then everyone like a pouting little kid. It's one thing for fans to claim it, but for their athletic director to announce everything he has is flat embarrassing. We have a playoff system in college football and the winner of that playoff is the champion. A G5 school may not have easy, if any, access to that playoff, but they are still bound by that system as an FBS member and not act like a child when it doesn't go their way. To me a G5 school needs to go undefeated 3 years in a row to get a chance. It almost happened for Boise State when they went undefeated in 2008 (then lost in bowl) and 2009 and the first 10 games of 2010. Before losing to Nevada they were #3 and had been #2 that season, but that was all after going 36-1 in a 3 year span. One 13-0 season by UCF does not a national championship make.Bsuorangecrush (talk) 05:22, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

I would venture a guess that it is a typo from the night before. They semifinals had a attendance 6,013 and the UTEP vs NDSU final had an attendance of 8,021. It's very simple for the attendance to be misprinted from 6,013 to 6,913 and I highly doubt that they actually recorded 2 different attendances for the finals but not the semifinals. Events that have 2 games almost always announce attendance for the session. But if you want it listed as 6,913 I don't really care.Bsuorangecrush (talk) 00:03, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
