"Template"

why?

1. Why did you speedily delete the jail category?

2. Why did you not wait for the normal length of time? What was the urgency to do so?

3. Why did you not comment on the reasons for speedily delete?

4. Why is there no consideration for the purpose of categories and how this category fulfills the purpose. Both other editors and the help desk agree that categories help users find related articles.

5. Why is there no consideration for new rationale that was never discussed in earlier discussions (at least the links provided by one user). Previous debates were along the lines of "I like it" versus "I don't like it". "Tabloid" versus "not tabloid". Nobody ever discussed the usefulness of categories.

6. Why will you not reopen the discussion for it to go on at the normal speed instead of closing it speedily?

AFD?

This is unrelated to any AFD you participated in.

If an AFD is a "delete" decision, what if nobody deletes it? After a certain time period, does that mean a keep? For example, after 1 month or 1 year or 1 decade, it is a keep?

Or, after a few weeks of not being deleted, can anyone blank the page without getting a warning or block? (Sort of a Wikipedia sanctioned vandalism)?

Yes, I fear my English teacher would have beaten me too! I'm still working on some of your other points... I'm not entirely happy with the effect of trying to make all the anniversaries into clear fragments: some of the re-formulations are very clumsy, some information just won't fit, and I don't like the strings of "Birth of..." that have been generated. I'm tempted to revert and try to make them all into (semi-)complete sentences with a full stop -- what would you think to putting a full stop after a sentence in which the "was" had been elided, eg "John Smith born in Chester." or "Foundation stone of Chester Abbey laid." ?

By the way, did you ever consider putting forward your Oxford portal for featured? I recall it appearing at peer review and being so well constructed that my only comment was along the lines of "could you do one for Cambridge, too?". Cheers, Espresso Addict (talk) 19:52, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

The image alignment seems a problem -- the fix you suggested is definitely better in Firefox -- it doesn't give perfect alignment but it does seem to give a larger margin at the top so it's less obvious that it's not aligned perfectly -- but it seems considerably worse in IE 6. The edit you made to the intro makes the alignment worse in Firefox -- I think the randomised image is confusing things. Unfortunately my net connection has been going up and down every minute or so for several hours now, which is very frustrating.

For some reason, the Oxford content appears far more developed than the Cambridge, which (it has to be admitted) is rather rubbish. I'll have to go around sneakily deleting articles relating to Oxford academics to even it up a bit... Espresso Addict (talk) 17:48, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

Notability of buildings

Hi, given your current project, I thought you might be able to answer this. I've not done much work on buildings myself, but am interested in putting together a list of listed buildings. Do you know if being a listed building in England & Wales makes a building notable enough for an article, or if it would still have to meet GNG? Obviously, having significant coverage in RS would be preferable in order to find enough material to write about, but I was just wondering if being listed would confer any automatic notability. It's just coming up as blank white for me. I also take your point about notability. I have found one good external source - an article in the Sydney Morning Herald (http://www.smh.com.au/world-cup-2010/world-cup-news/pulled-up-by-the-grassroots-20100604-xkjo.html) that talks about the Sutherland Shire Football Association in general. Is there a way I can upload it so that it stays there permanently, even if the SMH move or delete it? I've seen some 'Retrieved On' rubric next to inernet links before. Closure of Odd behaviour from OhanaUnited

The real issue which was obviously missed here was that there is in fact an on-going (albeit slow) pattern. Even though he is an admin, he engages in a very low level of talk, and thus finds himself in very few disagreements. However of the discussion threads that I could find that were obvious disagreements (without looking at every single talk edit he has made) He made inappropriate and disruptive responses in all of them. The original claim was there was no pattern, so I showed old edits to demonstrate the pattern, then the claim was made that the diffs were old. you can't have it both ways. They were all within his last 150 talk contribs. On-going disruption with multiple editors is rarely a case for RF/C (which is a non-binding wasteland), DR, and Arbcom wouldn't touch it at this point. This was a very clear case of disruptive behaviour backed with a pattern which is the direct task of administrators to deal with.--Crossmr (talk) 08:05, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

As I pointed out, at the point of closure only 6 people had commented and it was split 50/50. This is not the time to be trying to force a discussion closed rather to let it go to its natural end. There was no clear consensus either way, and the requirement for disruptive users is that they demonstrate that they know what they did is wrong and promise not to do it again, he did neither. Any other, non-admin, user would have been blocked at that point so there was still plenty to discuss.--Crossmr (talk) 23:02, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Friends of Friendless Churches in Wales

Hi. I fear that I might be straying into your area, and certainly into your country. Following the list Historic Chapels Trust, I have moved into work on churches preserved by the Friends of Friendless Churches. It seems that the Friends are looking after a number of churches in Wales, as well as in England. You can see how much I have done to date; on English churches here, and on Welsh churches here. I have made sure there is an article for every English church, and where there was not I have written one; they are all done. So now I am into Wales, and have written the first article, St Cynhaearn's Church, Ynyscynhaearn. This is not up to the standard of your GAs, but it is at least a start. If you want to improve this, or any article in the future, please go ahead. Before I go live with the list I shall be asking for your comments and advice, so you can give this at any time you choose. Surely both are acceptable in British English? It's kind of a point of contention sometimes, with "an" histor% being seen as perhaps somewhat old-fashioned by some. I've got a couple of judicial biographies to write, including those of Rigby Swift (who once told a claimant, disapprovingly, that "this court is here to uphold the law, not 'justice'") and Henry McCardie (a High Court judge knighted and bewigged before he was even a QC, so knowledgeable that despite not even having a degree his chambers were known as "the lighthouse" for the way the lights would stay on until 4 in the morning, when he finally finished the cases he was working on). If we fail, we fail, there is nothing wrong with that; but Wales should be a Good Article at least and if it takes good intentioned amateurs to reach that then so be it. John Lawson Walton

Bencherlite, first thanks for the vote of confidence in suggesting that I stand for admin - you are not the first person to suggest it and I am thinking about it. Second, and more important, can you take a look at John Lawson Walton. The Career section is confusing to say the least: the opening sentence of that section is very unclear - my guess is that it is some kind of reference to pupillage in the 19th century; also, the description of the defamation case is unclear - Playfair appears to be the defendant but was awarded damages, so I assume there was some kind of counterclaim, but this is not mentioned. Tweaked: I read the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography entry and the Times article cited, and made a couple of fixes. The Playfair story is quite interesting, in fact: Playfair examines plaintiff, concludes she has had a recent miscarriage, knows her husband has been away for some time, decides to tell his brother-in-law (who was plaintiff's husband's brother) that she has committed adultery. No attempt to justify the slur, but a (failed) plea of privilege. In fact, the appeal was settled on undisclosed terms, says The Times in its law report of the appeal and in its obituary of Playfair, so the strong suspicion must be that the final sum agreed was rather less than £12,000, but we will probably never know. You made a suggestion at the Portal:Star FPoC that I saw. Someone on IRC had commented that we should set a schedule for changing the state highway marker at the time of P:USRD. Well, now it does so randomly each time the portal page is loaded, and the number in the "default" circle changes each time as well. Thanks for the inspiration. I have unfortunately hit a bit of a rut in terms of production, simply because I've been working on my Magnum Opus - a full, perfectly referenced biography of Edward Coke, along with full and Good articles on his cases, reports and institutes. I am guessing wildly that you might know something about this topic (categories, not dangling under the dome of St Paul's on a rope, I mean ... or maybe both, what do I know?) and I wondered if you would mind, please, if I asked you a question about a totally unrelated article where I also have a category concern? If not, then fine - just tell me to b*gger off and I will do so and never darken your door again. But if you wouldn't mind a superquick look and an expert opinion - you can send the invoice to the usual address - then I'd be most grateful. Please advise. Thank you! That's very nice of you. Right then - here, at Stefan Zweig, is an article that is in 21 categories. Here, at Talk:Stefan_Zweig#Categories_-_excess_of.3F is some confused old person trying to understand if 21 categories is normal, good, bad, couldn't care less, unconnected with the price of fish etc or what. I have a tiny voice in my head (darn that medication) saying that it looks excessive, but I honestly wouldn't know if it is by general Wikipedia standards and if it really matters. (And it's a couple less than it used to be! I think we may have got rid of "People who knew Strauss and wrote a book about Maria Stuart and had lived in Bath once", or something else maybe a touch too specialized.) My attempts to ask other Zweig-interested editors what they think have not quite set the Thames on fire yet. It may of course be that it simply does not matter and that I should just STFU (whatever that means) but I'd rather be told that than just be left feeling clueless (though I should be used to it by now). Right now, while some of the cats he's in are obvious (yes, he was a Jewish Austrian who wrote), others don't seem to be supported by the text, which does make me wonder.
