Friendly word of advice re: Pristina

First of all, please don't take this the wrong way as you are, imo, in the right in this whole situation. However, in the future if something like this happens again, I would strongly recommend that you post about it on the adminstrator's noticeboard because even if you are defending the consensus version of the article like you were in this situation, what you did could possibly be considered canvassing. Again, I understand why and this is not a warning or rebuke or anything like that. I'm just saying that because in these kinds of situations, you really want to be absolutely sure there is not a single thing you have done that can, in any way whatsoever, be construed as you violating any rule no matter how trivial because if you do, people will bring it up. It doesn't matter how much in the right you are and how much in the wrong the other person is, even if they broke 1000 serious rules and you accidentally didn't use an edit summary correctly (I'm exaggerating, but the point is still there), you will be portrayed as the guilty party. It stinks, but that is the way the world works (as I'm sure you are already aware, but reminders never hurt :-) ). Thingg⊕⊗ 22:21, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

A different sock

Hi,
The IPs like 109.106.231.225, which belong to an ISP in Belgrade, are used by a different sockmaster, who has quite a long history. Not Evlekis, whose IPs usually (not always) geolocated to the UK. The two sockmasters have cooperated. Their interests overlap but they are not exactly the same. I never got round to doing the necessary background research on this particular sockmaster, so I'm wary of naming them. For our freedom and yours

Welcome to the second issue of WikiProject Poland newsletter, the Monitor (named after the first Polish newspaper).

Our Project has been operational since 1 June, 2005, and also serves as the Poland-related Wikipedia notice board. I highly recommend watchlisting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Poland page, so you can be aware of the ongoing discussions. We hope you will join us in them, if you haven't done so already! Unlike many other WikiProjects, we are quite active; we get close to a hundred discussion threads each year and we do a pretty good job at answering all issues raised. Last year we were featured in the Signpost, and our interviewer was amazed at our activity. In the end, however, even as active as we are, we are just a tiny group - you can easily become one of our core members!

In addition to a lively encyclopedic, Poland-related, English-language discussion forum, we have numerous useful tools that can be of use to you - and that you could help us maintain and develop:

  • we have an active assessment department. As of now, our project has tagged almost 83,000 pages as Poland-related - that's an improvement of over 3,000 new pages since the last newsletter. Out of which 30 still need a quality assessment, and 2,000, importance assessment. We have done a lot to clear the backlog here (3 years ago those numbers were 1,500 and 20,000, respectively). Can you help assess a few pages?
    • assessing articles is as easy as filling in the class= and importance= parameters on the talk page in the {{WPPOLAND|class=|importance=}} template. See here for a how-to guide.
  • once an article has an assessment template, it will appear in our article alerts and news feed, which provides information on which Poland-related articles are considered for deletion, move, or are undergoing a Good or Featured review. Watchlisting that feed, in addition to watchlisting our project's main page, is a good way to make sure you stay up to date on most Poland-related discussions.
  • you can also see detailed deletion discussions at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Poland (which is a good place to watchlist if you just want to stay up to date on possible deletions of Poland-related content)
  • we have also begun B-class quality reviews on our talk page, and if our activity increases, hopefully we will be able to institute our own A-class quality reviews. As of now, we have about 500 C-class articles in need of a B-class review. If you'd like to help with them, instructions for doing B-class reviews are to be found in point 10 of our assessment FAQ. In addition to this automated list, you are also encouraged to help review articles from our B-class reviews requested list found here.
  • also, those articles will be included in our cleanup listing, which allows us to see which top-importance articles are in need for attention, and so on. We have tens of thousands articles in need of cleanup there, so if you ever need something to do, just look at this gigantic list. (I am currently reviewing the articles tagged with notability, either proving them notable or nominating for deletion; there are still several dozens left if you want to help!).
  • did you know that newly created Poland-related articles are listed here. They need to be reviewed, often cleaned-up, occasionally nominated for deletion, and their creators may need to be welcomed and invited to our project if they show promise as new authors of Poland-related content.
  • we are maintaining a Portal:Poland
  • automated Wikipedia:WikiProject Poland/Popular pages lists the most popular Poland-related pages from the previous month(s)
  • Breaking news: we are looking for a Wikipedian in Residence for the New York City area. See Wikipedia:GLAM/Józef Piłsudski Institute of America for details.

Consistency?

You reverted my edit at Template:Largest cities of Kosovo with the edit summary Consistency. I fail to see the consistency in using other names than the target article names. Please explain in the template talk page. Another user opened a discussion there several days ago. Hi, I just wanted to let you know that I have seen your edits at 2013–14 Sheffield United F.C. season and that live updating are not accepted. Based on Wikipedia policies and guidlines we should not provide livescores and live updates. This based on WP:LIVESCORES and WT:FOOTY consensus at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Archive 81#Live scoring and it has also been discussed many more times. This also applies to tables and list such as top goalscorers, squad statistics and other match info, which you can also read about at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Archive 81#Live updates (again). Please wait until matches are finished before adding the statistics. Wikipedia is not for livescoring and should wait for update until sources are updated. Thank you. Concerns

Your insistance on forcing historically inaccurate names into the text of Kosovo football articles is quite disturbing. Furthermore, your violation of WP:Civil is completely uncalled for and says more about you than it does about me. Knowingly inserting pseudohistorical place names is a big no-no. In fact, it's like referring to Titograd in 1965 as Podgorica and writing that the capital of Rhodesia was Harare and not Salisbury. I don't see you making such moves on articles concerning such places, which leads me to believe you are editing Balkan-related topics simply to push an Albanian POV. 23 editor (talk) 19:19, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

There has not been a name change for Gjakova in the English language unlike Podgorica and Harare. Both name have been used historically in the English language. There is no Consensus to use Serbian name pre-2008. IJA (talk) 19:24, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Stop comparing to cities which have had a name change. This isn't the same. Both names are currently acceptable and both names have historically been used. In Yugoslavian times, the city was called Đakovica in Serbo-Croatian and Gjakova in Albanian. IJA (talk) 20:02, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

@IJA: I don't mean Albanian-language per se. I mean Albanian (authors, nationalists, points-of-view, publications, etc.) In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you pointed me to an article written by Joseph DioGuardi in 1990 and called it "proof" that Albanian variants were commonly used in the English language while Yugoslavia was still intact. Edit-warring on articles such as Aleksandar Tijanić or Ardian Kozniku. Idiotic debates over article titles for cities which have more than one name in several languages are nothing new to Wikipedia (see Gdansk and Danzig or any of about a dozen cities with Croatian/Italian names in Istria), and adding a fresh layer of Balkan bickering hardly helps alleviate the situation. Places in Kosovo have always had Serbian and Albanian variants. During Yugoslavia Serbo-Croatian was the official languages which means the former ones were also used by everyone else in Yugoslavia. And even today in the Republic of Kosovo both languages are official. So where you got the idea that only the Albanian ones should be used is beyond me. When is "then"? The fact is both names were used back "then" and we should use the most recognisable name so it is easier for the majority of English speakers to understand and recognise when using this encyclopaedia. "Then" is 1949 and 1967. But you don't seem to be able to make that connection. Back "then" both names were in use. Maybe several more in fact. But only one variant was used officially in all atlases, charts, publications and documents published in Yugoslavia. And that was the Serbo-Croatian version (the people you are edit-warring over had actual Yugoslav passports issued which only stated S-C names of their birthplaces in it). And arguing that "Gjakova" is recognizable at all to an average English reader is pretty far fetched. This is not Cologne vs. Koln. Timbouctou (talk) 23:43, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Those graphs are meaningless if we don't know whether Google book scans even supported the š character, which should not be taken as a given with old data in particular.

The Serbian toponym spellings were official at the time and this is indeed quite relevant for the context of the protests - the Serbian language was used in Kosovo despite the Albanian majority population.

I can hardly make sense of that ancient mishmash... I still don't see any real reason for a historical article that literally talks about a period of Serbian hegemony to avoid the Serbian terminology. Similar to how we use the term Constantinople in an article about Byzantium - not because of the ethnicity or local consensus of the inhabitants of the city, but because it's relevant to the context. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 16:45, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
The key thing to notice in the case of that city is that "Belgrade" is a clearly anglicised name that has been known in mainstream English as the name of the city at the time - heck, just like "Constantinople". On the latter topic, German names, we do actually use that logic in some such articles, e.g. Operation Southeast Croatia. Note also that there's a non-trivial difference between titles of articles and references (and redirects) to articles. Specifically, it's not at all unreasonable to use the term Second Enemy Offensive in an article about the Partisans. Do you see the pattern now? --Joy [shallot] (talk) 18:15, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
Look, this is ridiculous. I have never said Google Books does not support š, yet you continue to trot out that straw man! And you're ignoring the glaringly obvious similarity between the ngram graph for Priština and Pristina in the 1990s - we have no way of knowing if it's just a stripped diacritic or someone actually anglicizing. "Pristina" is not an English word, just like "Zagreb" and "Tirana" aren't. Miller and loans

I'm not sure that Miller is necessarily going to be released as claimed - I think he still has a year on his contract and is more likely to be placed on the transfer list or loaned. I may be wrong - the club should be announcing the reteined list today. BTW - I was wondering why you'd blanked the new season article in the project sandbox, it was quite mystifying. It was only just now I'd noticed you'd recreated it as a new article which sort of explains why. I certainly will be doing mate, if it is history, then we should include it on wikipedia. I'm currently working on Prizren. I've got more to do on WW2 in Prizren first before I move onto something else. But I plan on doing history on all major cities in Kosovo. I'm trying to keep away from the 1990s stuff at the moment. With the Balkan Wars, WW1 and WW2, there is literature and lots of published secondary sources. There isn't many secondary sources on the 1990s stuff as it is still fairly recent and most of it is primary sources, mostly biased news articles from the time. Most of the history of former Yugo on Wiki is mainly on the 1990s, I'm trying to focus on the first half of the 20th Century. IJA (talk) 22:04, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
And as you can see by inclusions to Prizren, I'm not discriminating against any one ethnic group. I've mentioned Serb & Montenegrin atrocities, I've mentioned Serb suffering, I've mentioned Bulgarian atrocities. I've mention how Serbia/ Yugoslavia were invaded in WW1 & 2. If you're using a source and you're not sure if it is neutral or not, you can always say something like: "According to the BBC's documentary The Death of Yugoslavia... X Y Z". That way you're not saying it is an undisputed fact, but you're informing our readers/ audience on wikipedia who this is according to. IJA (talk) 22:45, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
With regards to that particular documentary, there are concerns with it due the Serbo-Croatian being subtitled wrong into English. One could argue that the documentary is misleading. IJA (talk) 22:48, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
Also the documentary is most certainly a Primary Source as it is from the period (1995). You have to be careful with primary sources because when they were made, things are yet to come to light. They can be premature and not know the full picture yet. IJA (talk) 22:53, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Octavian Augustus

Why was he called 'Augustus'? I mean what does that mean in Latin (probably)? As I remember, my history teacher had told me that that means something like 'cruel'. And also, why did Kleopatra retreat her ships (60) from the battle? Cheers Alex discussion ★ 15:16, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Augustus is Latin for the month of August. His real/ birth name "Octavius" is just another way of saying August in Latin when the name is given to a person I think. However I'm pretty sure the month is named after him. I'm not too good on Ancient Roman/ Egyptian history, it is interesting but I've never really studied it academically. When I was at University, I specialised in Modern British & European History. I also did a lot of Medieval Welsh history too as it was compulsory at my University.
