Visiting

To re-heat a discussion that was happening earlier (re. 'entry price', but also the 'hours of operation' section even earlier), I'd like to propose a sub-section visually differentiated but still part of the infobox - called "visitor information".

Yes, I understand that WP is "not a directory" but this template already includes fields for "carpark" and "nearest public transport" which are clearly aimed at giving information to potential visitors to a physical space. However these are only some of the pieces of 'minimum information required' for a successful visit.
So, I propose that EITHER we delete these kinds of fields from the template entirely, OR we add in the other key pieces of visitor info - opening days/hours, entry price (other?) - and group them all to an addendum-section to the bottom of the template.
I would like to suggest adding a link to the equivalent Wikivoyage article too but that project doesn't have museum-specific articles so that won't work. e.g. "british museum" redirects to "bloomsbury, London" and "louvre" redirects to 1st Arrondisment, Paris". Architect field in Infobox

Hi. I would like to propose adding the field of "Architect" to the infobox. For famous structures and buildings, it makes sense to cite who designed & built it. It is mentioned in most every article but not in the infobox. Nconcklin (talk) 18:00, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

Seems sensible to me. Frankie Roberto (talk) 15:27, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
You could embed {{Infobox building}}, which has also got a few other architecture-related parameters, like |architectural_style=. Alakzi (talk) 15:43, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Coordinates

Hi, Whenever I use infobox museum I always have a problem with the coordinatesin (deg-decimal) format. How can I show the coordinates in (deg-min-sec) format ? Thanks. Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 08:52, 19 December 2016 (UTC)

Imagesize parameter

User:Alakzi has supposedly cleaned up the template by removing the imagesize parameter (among other things) without marking it in the edit summary, without discussing it first, and without giving even a reason for it. I think the parameter should remain in the template so the image and map in the infobox can have the same width and be aligned, so I've put the parameter back, but User:Alakzi has reverted my edit, again without explanation. For me there are two agreeable solutions: continue to enable the imagesize parameter or make the map the same size as the image. – Editør (talk) 10:58, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Well, you could've read the page I linked to. Per the WP:IMAGESIZE policy, "Except with very good reason, do not use px (e.g. thumb|300px), which forces a fixed image width. In most cases upright=scaling factor should be used, thereby respecting the user's base preference ... Images used in infoboxes are generated by many different means. The most common method used to implement upright is Module:InfoboxImage (see documentation there)." Alakzi (talk) 11:00, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification of your edit and revert. I don't see the need to keep the parameter if the map uses the standard image size as well, so the image and map in the infobox are aligned. Is that agreeable to you? – Editør (talk)
Which parameter do you mean? Alakzi (talk) 11:25, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
The parameter "imagesize" that you removed. – Editør (talk) 17:24, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
It's been replaced by |image_upright=, an image scaling factor; people might still want to scale the image under limited circumstances. Alakzi (talk) 17:36, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
Alright, that will do once all articles that used 'imagesize' have been updated. But following your reasoning, shouldn't map_size also be a scaling factor? – Editør (talk) 17:59, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
{{Location map}} images are not frameless. Location map absolutely positions the pins on the map; it cannot do so without knowing the exact dimensions of the image. It's a technical limitation. Alakzi (talk) 18:14, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Is it possible to add the following notes to image_upright sections of the documentation

  • 1. in the usage <-- do not use |imagesize --> (with the ! that I've missed out here)
  • 2. In the parameters (see WP:IMAGESIZE )

I think this would make users more aware of why the imagesize parameter is not used in this infobox (and make it easier to explain edits to remove/replace it in the 2000+ articles that list it as an unknown parameter)EdwardUK (talk) 18:25, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

uses of this parameter were clogging up the tracking category (about 1600 or so), so I added it back for time being. we should really have a bot clean this up if we don't want the parameter to be used any more. Frietjes (talk) 19:30, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Adding executive director parameter

I'm the Wikipedian in Residence for the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. I'd like to add an Executive Director field to the template because they don't have a President or CEO. Draft (by my friend Mr. Stradivarius, kudos to him) is here. I will, of course, also update the docs. Any objections? Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 20:13, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

@TransporterMan: As it has been a few days with no objections, I've added the parameter (and updated the docs). Best — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 07:34, 8 May 2017 (UTC)

Embedding within Infobox building

Hello, the documentation of both this template and Template: Infobox building seem to say that each should properly embed within the other, but this doesn't seem to be the case; please see the test I have created in my sandbox. Parameter not displaying

Hi been trying to use the parameter chairperson and it will not display, I am currently working on a page for the museum I am curator of as we do not have a page. Its currently at User:Faendalimas/Chelonian_Research_Institute whilst being developed. Not sure why this parameter is not working. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 21:53, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

@Faendalimas: it appears to have got lost in this edit. Keith D (talk) 21:58, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
yes I removed it because it was not working. So yes I know I edited it out, but when included its not displaying that persons name. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 22:04, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
@Faendalimas: I think you got wrong end of stick, I was saying it was removed from the template in the specified edit not from your article. It has been lost from 49 article that have that parameter filled in. Keith D (talk) 22:21, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
ahh sorry my misunderstanding. Anyway no problem I can do a work around for now. Thanks for letting me know. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 22:22, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Short description

This infobox tries to generate a short description, but sometimes does a poor job of it. That feature seems to have been added by Galobtter with this edit. So I wondered: (a) was there any consensus for that change/where was it discussed? (b) why isn't it documented? and (c) what is the mechanism to override-ride/disable it? (which should, I suggest, happen automatically when {{short description}} is also present in the page)? Thanks, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:59, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

It will automatically get over-rided when there is a {{short description}} in the page Galobtter (pingó mió) 04:37, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, Galobtter! So why am I seeing two descriptions at Museo d'Arte Sacra della Val d'Arbia? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 20:46, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
Justlettersandnumbers, If you're using css to show the descriptions, two descriptions will show, but the manual one is the one that is used (shameless plug: User:Galobtter/Shortdesc helper allows you to see the actual description and edit it easily) Galobtter (pingó mió) 20:52, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Mapframe maps?

{{Infobox building}} and {{Infobox shopping mall}} have both recently been updated to automatically show dynamic mapframe maps by default. I am proposing to similarly show such maps by default for this template, with the same optional parameters to adjust the size, frame center point, initial zoom level, and marker icon; and to similarly allow the mapframe map to be turned off using |mapframe=no. See Template:Infobox building#Mapframe maps and Template talk:Infobox building#Change to the map parameter so Kartographer works for further information. (FYI: I'm making similar proposal for other buildings infobox templates) - Evad37 [talk] 15:36, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Support, I agree about this update. angys (Talk Talk) 11:44, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

  Done - Evad37 [talk] 06:33, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

@Evad37: Should this try to detect whether "map_type=" is set? Museum of Croydon (which has "map_type" set to Greater London, but not "mapframe=no") is currently displaying two slightly different maps one above the other, which seems unnecessary. --Lord Belbury (talk) 14:29, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Actually, this is the same problem issue that was raised around the same time at Template_talk:Infobox_building/Archive_1#Change_to_the_map_parameter_so_Kartographer_works, I'll raise an edit request to undo Evad's change. --Lord Belbury (talk) 15:45, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 10 December 2018

Per discussion of the same change to the more general building infobox, Evad37's edit to add automatic mapframe maps wrongly results in multiple maps being displayed on some articles (eg. Museum of Croydon). This single edit should be undone to bring the template back in line with infobox building, and given further discussion. Lord Belbury (talk) 15:47, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

ping Evad37. Cabayi (talk) 16:28, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
I have temporarily fix the linked article by adding |mapframe=no, per the documentation. Is this a good enough fix? I recognize that there are probably many articles that are showing both maps, and with 7,500 transclusions, it would be a big task to check and change all of them. I think it would be pretty easy to add a tracking category to list articles displaying two maps; I would be willing to attempt to create one. We could also make the mapframe map hide automatically if a pushpin map is present; that was tried for a while in Infobox building, and I'm not clear on why it was rejected.
Also pinging Ritchie333, who undid the mapframe addition to Infobox building. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:05, 10 December 2018 (UTC)
Given that (if I'm understanding this right) |mapframe= is a recent addition to the template, there must be hundreds or thousands of older articles that pre-date it and are using |map_type= without switching off the mapframe. It would make sense to treat any non-blank value of |map_type= as also implying |mapframe=no, while permitting |mapframe=yes to override it in (rare?) situations where a double map was explicitly needed. --Lord Belbury (talk) 11:00, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
I have added code to hide the mapframe map if either a pushpin map is present or |mapframe= is set to "no". Please ping me if this resolution is unsatisfactory, or if I broke something, or if you decide that you want to get rid of the mapframe maps entirely, as has been done at Infobox building. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:38, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

Module parameter request

I tried to embed {{Infobox NRHP}} in this template in the Conner Prairie article, but it doesn't recognize the "module" parameter and I couldn't get it to work. Could someone please add the module parameter to allow embedding, or tell me what I should be doing instead? Thanks and all the best, Miniapolis 20:40, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

I think the template works fine, but the documentation was wrong. I have adjusted the documentation. Take a look at Athenaeum of Philadelphia for an example of an embedded NRHP template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:11, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, Jonesey; if I'd added the embed parameter to the child template, it probably would've worked. All the best, Miniapolis 23:23, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

Suggestion for New Location Parameter

Could we add a new parameter for the date a museum opens at a new location? I have been using this template for a number of aviation museums that were originally founded at one location and then moved to another, usually because of a lack of space. As a result, no matter which date is entered for the "established" parameter it can end up causing confusion. If this is not possible, could we clarify which date should be used? –Noha307 (talk) 22:13, 4 February 2019 (UTC)

Jerusalem

If you look at, say Rockefeller Museum, the Template:Infobox museum -map links to a map which includes the whole of East Jerusalem (occupied by Israel since 1967) as part of Israel. This is highly controversial, to put it mildly. How can we change this? Huldra (talk) 21:21, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

According to this, the date comes straight from OpenStreetMap. Until we can get them to change it back, is there someway we can NOT link to it? Huldra (talk) 22:25, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Have you tried specifying the |map_type=? Using |map_type=Israel, for example, gives you a map that shows all of Israel. Using |map_type=Jerusalem East Central gives you a different view. You can find more possible maps at Special:PrefixIndex/Module:Location_map/data/Israel. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:16, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
User:Jonesey95, thanks, the thing is: East Jerusalem is not in Israel, according to the international community. I tried |map_type =Jerusalem East Central ...but that gave streets names in Hebrew: again, not really acceptable. So I set "| mapframe = no", and the map was removed. That helped (but I would still like a map...just not one as biased as the former was), Huldra (talk) 23:49, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
I don't know anything about the politics except that they are complex and that there are editors who care passionately about the details. Are either Module:Location map/data/Palestinian territories or Module:Location map/data/Israel jerusalem a possibility? You could try asking at the talk page for an appropriate Israel/Palestine/whatever WikiProject. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:53, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Complex, indeed. I have already opened the question at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Israel Palestine Collaboration, Huldra (talk) 23:58, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Support that decision, Huldra, as while you're right it's an issue here - it's also a much broader one than this specific article. StarM 17:22, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Track gauge

Could gauge be added to accommodate Baltimore Streetcar Museum, and National Capital Trolley Museum as well as all other streetcar and railway museums? Peter Horn User talk 22:25, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

How does a museum have a track gauge? That doesn't seem like an attribute of a museum, but of some aspect of its collection. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:27, 8 May 2020 (UTC)
Maybe for spaces like SculptureCenter where the building retains elements of its former life as a trolley repair location? (Not that those are in the article - thanks for reminder to enhance that history) StarM 01:46, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
Transport museums as such as the Baltimore Streetcar Museum, the Halton County Radial Railway, the Canadian Railway Museum and others HAVE tracks that are actually used. In the case of the Baltimore Streetcar Museum the field key holdings is somewhat confusing. Peter Horn User talk 18:37, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Aquariums have fish tanks; do we list the capacity of their fish tanks in the infobox? I do not see any other parameters in this infobox that are applicable to only one type of museum. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:30, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

Network template for Dia museums=

I am working on correcting, updating, and creating pages for all of the Dia Art Foundation locations and sites which includes 3 current museums, one planned museums, and 8 permanently installed art installations. I think that the number of museums calls for a Network template in the infobox but just want to check here that I am correct before I create one. I would only include the museums and not the individual works in the template. Found5dollar (talk) 17:30, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Possible to add new field to museum Infobox?=

Hi--might it be possible to add "Chief Librarian" or "Librarian" to the museum infobox? For example, for the Watson Library, Menil Collection, Guggenheim and Frick Library, etc. This may help researchers know whom to contact, etc. If so, can anyone do this? Thank you! Ellen.prokop (talk) 00:03, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

I think some kind of chief librarian field is not the worst idea. Note also that currently you can use the blank field |leader_type=Chief librarian (and value using |leader=) for this. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 00:55, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

Wrong preview picture showing

Hi, I posted the following a couple of weeks ago on the Louvre talkpage, I should maybe have come here first.

In other articles, hovering on a link to this article, the image one gets is not the expected iconic frontage with glass pyramid but instead the map of Paris. I came here to switch the images so that the picture is first, but it is already in that order. The preview should be the picture, not the map but I cannot see how to fix it. Can someone tweak the infobox so the correct preview shows onhover please? Cheers,
— User:Captainllama 20:12, 19 November 2020 (UTC)

I tried it on a couple of pages and got the image rather than the map, via the pop-ups. Keith D (talk) 12:10, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
Me too. Just to be clear, the way I am seeing this image is by enabling "navigation popups" in my Preferences, under Gadgets. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:32, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback, I'm referring to the standard default page previews. If I enable navigation popups I too see the expected image amongst the other stuff that that preference shows, but default still shows the map not the image. It's worth emphasising I only see this behaviour for Louvre, other articles using {infobox museum} work fine: The Cartoon Museum : Franz Mayer Museum : Musée Rodin. What do you get without navigation popups enabled Jonesey95? And are you using default or popup enabled Keith D? Captainllama (talk) 04:32, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
That is strange. I turned off nav popups and turned on Page Previews (in the Appearance tab of Preferences; why are there two options for the same thing?), and I see the map at Louvre also, and at Louvre-Lens, but for almost every other museum linked from Louvre, I see the image. I looked through the infoboxes in each one and do not see a difference that explains the difference to me. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:57, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
Update: I think I may have found it. I did some digging in the tech specs, and they are pretty comprehensible. mw:Extension:PageImages#How does it select images? and the following section describe the scoring. Images that are more than twice as wide as they are tall, like the images at Louvre and at Louvre-Lens (a 2.4:1 ratio), are scored lower than an image that has a 2:1 ratio. I think that may explain the effect we are seeing, but I don't know if the spec described there describes the code as it actually runs today. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:19, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
I have navigation popups enabled. Keith D (talk) 12:37, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
