Col de la République edit
- ... that the Col de la République featured in both the first and second Tours de France but was the scene of notorious violence in 1904?

New enough, long enough, clearly written and covers the topic well. The hook is interesting, although I have clarified it by removing the words "the most". I find no overly close paraphrasing; however, I didn't see a statement that at least part of the article is translated from fr.wikipedia, so I added the template to the talk page. The article needs more references. I combined two paragraphs at one point so that one of them would not be lacking a reference, but the single paragraph under History needs a reference and so does the paragraph on the first Tour de France. Also the reference about Paul de Vivie's invention of the derailleur being associated with the col de la République needs to be amplified and preferably a second ref added for that, since the journal being cited is his own. There is no ref at the end of the sentence that actually states the hook fact, although that can easily be remedied from existing sources. More specifically as relates to that part of the article, I also think, after looking at the fr.wikipedia article on the 2nd Tour, the various sources cited (including the complete list of participants at Mémoire du cyclisme), and our article on Giovanni Gerbi, that Paul Gerbi never existed and that the mention of someone being knocked out in the fr.wikipedia article is not supported by the sources. I've made those changes in the article, but if more digging reveals a second Gerbi and a knockout, they should of course be added back. (The French newspaper clipping also refers to passing motorists, not race officials, firing gunshots, but who knows '-).) Yngvadottir (talk) 17:45, 18 July 2012 (UTC)
- No problem :-) I saw what you'd added and documented a couple more things using GoogleBooks. If you have access to that undated clipping, please quote the relevant passage in a reference, because I can't find the story online to save my life (there are at least two relevant books I can't see, sadly), and it's a nice one. Until then I've commented it out, because I found another association between de Vivie and the col that explains the annual ride. The para on the first Tour still needs a ref. I'll continue checking back, hope you don't mind the sudden appearance of book refs. Yngvadottir (talk) 20:35, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, I think all problems are now fixed. The latest changes by Daemonic Kangaroo have further improved the article. The undated cutting is owned by, and originally referenced by, retired cycling journalist and Wiki contributor User:Les woodland. He has not been active for several weeks, probably cycle-touring. Yes, I do think it's good to go now :-) I'd like to have that story back in, but please only with either a quote and full info about that clipping (i.e. at least the article title and author if any, if the date is really irrecoverable) or some other reliable source. I'm quite prepared to believe it's there in offline sources, but User:Les woodland can't serve as the source himself, we have to have something that others with access to the offline sources could track down :-) --Yngvadottir (talk) 12:46, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
