Tanganyika still exists edit

Tanganyika still exists in at least one form: if you apply for a trademark in Tanzania you have to apply separately in Tanganyika and in Zanzibar (there is no single unitary Tanzanian trademark). There may well be other aspects in which the division continues - perhaps we need an article to cover this? FOARP (talk) 14:28, 14 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

– There is no primary topic for Tanganyika. The Republic only lasted for three years (1961–64). Lake Tanganyika gets consistently more views and Tanganyika (territory) gets almost half as many (see [1]). Vpab15 (talk) 15:32, 22 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Support move of some sort since the article at the base name is not the primary topic but maybe Tanganyika (1961–1964) because the article covers one year when the country wasn't a republic. DrKay (talk) 17:04, 22 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose The state was formally known as "Tanganyika" from 1961 to 1962. The Republic of Tanganyika was a continuation of the state of Tanganyika, under a different system. More crucially, none of the other items listed in the disambiguation are commonly known simply as "Tanganyika", and thus it makes sense to keep the republic, which is, as the main topic. • Support the 1961-64 polity becomes more and more historical every year, it's hard to say it is more important than the 1916-61 territory. Furthermore, Lake Tanganyika is around. The 1961-64 polity is not the primary topic. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 17:41, 23 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. If anything, the territory should be primary. I'm not sure why it isn't at Tanganyika Territory, given that was a very common name for it, which would avoid parenthetical disambiguation. Tanganyika (1961–1964) would probably be best for the sovereign state. -- Necrothesp (talk) 11:11, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Post-move repairs edit

Despite sterling efforts by 2pou and others, disambiguation page Tanganyika still has over 1000 incoming links. (For comparison, only two other dabs have over 100 links.) Many of the links I've tried to fix refer to neither the British territory nor the independent state, and may need to be targeted to new redirects for:

Fixing the rest of these templates should correct many bad links but some are problematic. For example, {{Country data Tanzania}} may need to be replaced by two templates.

Any other thoughts? Certes (talk) 00:38, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

I largely agree. Waziri (fictional tribe) is another page that needs a "German Tanganyika" style target. Of course "Tanganyika" wasn't used before the British Mandate, but German East Africa also included Rwanda and Burundi, and often isn't a good link target. Perhaps Tanganyika (region) (currently a redlink) can work? User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 01:12, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Should Category:1936 in Tanganyika be renamed to Category:1936 in Tanganyika Territory (or Category:1936 in Tanganyika (territory))? User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 01:24, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Good question. The latter matches the article name, but it's not ambiguous as there was only one Tanganyika in 1936, and it includes events for both the political entity and the region. Also, what would we do with 1961 in Tanganyika? I think that series can be left alone, but other categories may need attention. Certes (talk) 10:23, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

There is also the question of incoming redirects. Tanzania Mainland is unambiguous and shouldn't target the dab. Certes (talk) 10:23, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Either Tanzania Mainland or Mainland Tanzania (or Tanzania mainland) would be better than Tanganyika (region) (which doesn't seem to be used at all, and could also refer to the region around Lake Tanganyika or the province in the DRC). If I knew which name were best I'd create a new page there. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 17:20, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
Google ngram seems to prefer "Tanzania Mainland". Would you create an article or a redirect (to what target)? Certes (talk) 18:35, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I haven't found a good target (Geography of Tanzania is the best idea I've had), so I think we need a new article. There may be an ENGVAR issue with the word-order; in the US putting "Mainland" first is common in these constructions. (I have no experience with Tanzanian English) User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 18:48, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Tanzania Mainland is now a stub; I'll expand it with some content from Geography of Tanzania and History of Tanzania in a few hours. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 19:06, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! Mainland Tanzania sounds more natural to me as a British English speaker too, so that could redirect to it. That article can accept links to both the current political and geographic areas, but we may still need new targets for the pre-colonial and German era links. German Tanzania German TanganyikaGerman East Africa {{R from subtopic}} would be useful for now, though some links date from German East Africa Company times. We may still need a redirect for the ancient uses, though I'm not sure of the best title nor where it would redirect to: History of Tanzania#Early coastal history may be the least bad target. I've made a start. It will take more time than I can spend today to make it a decent article. Not sure I'll get back to it tonight, but certainly tomorrow. Hopefully it's good enough to list on the DAB page. User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 20:24, 30 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
