Book

He has also released a book on September 29th 2005 entitled; Bigger Than Hitler Better Than Christ by The Rik Mayall. Published by Haper Collins.

Although this is an autobiography it is written by 'THE' Rik Mayall which is Mayall's public persona so deceifering whats fact and fiction can be tricky. tigerstripe 18:53, 18 September 2005 (UTC)

It's written by Rik, but sounds more like Richie. Bjelleklang - talk 11:12, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Expansion request etc

Okay, I have added some links to the 'bwilliant' shows Rik has had a major part in, and I have added this article to the list for requested expansions. I hope somebody can improve this article. The presentation could be better, and there must be more info on a comedy legend like like Rik Mayall. Feel free to visit my talk page to discuss improving any aspect of this article. -Neural 05:13, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

I've added the expansion tag to the main page, in the hopes that somebody will take up the challenge to improve the article. I am not the best person to do this, but I'd recommend that it be broken up into sections - life, career, trivia etc... The layout looks shabby compared to many similar articles. Even the vile Nick Griffin has a better-presented article than this! -Neural 18:19, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

He also does the voice for King Arthur in the children's cartoon 'King Arthur's Disasters'. It is recent but I am not sure what year or any other details - I just know that it's on every weekday and my 5 year old loves it. --ja1young, 22:18, 2nd July 2007 (UTC)

Oddly, there is no mention of The Dangerous Brothers, which has its own page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dangerous_Brothers I can't be arsed to fix it. The Real Walrus (talk) 23:20, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Voice-over

Didn't do the voice-over/voice of a puppy in a Andrex add?

Yes, I believe so.
I concur. Ghostwords (talk) 14:46, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Harry Potter

Re Harry Potter appearance "None of this footage has reached the public domain thus far." - is this true? I could have sworn I remember seeing some of it, though I forget where. Perhaps I'm just thinking of John Cleese's appearance.

It may be in the deleted scenes in the first dvd release. Ghostwords (talk) 14:46, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Hitler

It has been reported that he has used the Hitler salute to a group of Anarchists on a march in Notting Hill. report about the march

Honorary doctorate degree at the university of Exeter (June 9th 2008)

Rik received an honorary doctorate degree at the university of Exeter on the 9th of June, and gave a fantastic acceptance speech for the gathered graduands.

Rik in series 4 of ITV's Miss Marple (2008, air date TBA)

Just read on Digital Spy that Rik will appear in the third episode of the fourth series of Miss Marple, entitled "Why didn't they ask Evans?", together with (among others) Richard Briers. Fair use rationale for Image:Rik flash.jpg

Image:Rik flash.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. BetacommandBot (talk) 04:20, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Personal relationships

There are references both here and on Lise Meyer's entry to Mayall having an affair, abandoning Meyer when both women became pregnant by him and her later miscarriage. I have serious concerns over the fact that none of this is accompanied by a verifiable reference. Ghostwords (talk) 14:46, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Can a source be provided for the recent (1 march 2008) and rather controversial entry about an alleged illegitimate child? And whatever the source (if indeed there is one), I'm not sure this sort of information is entirely relevant (or indeed justifiable) for a wiki page about an actor's career... 00:47, 6 march 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.194.63.216 (talk)

I've tagged it with citation needed. Frankly though, this are serious claims, and this is a biography of a living person - I think they should come out altogether until we have a robust source. Not really my subject area though so I don't feel bold enough to just delete... I also agree that this sort of celebrity trivia would be better somewhere other than in an encyclopaedia. Droitwitch or Redditch?

An editor over at Redditch has spotted that there we have Mayall as having lived as a child in the town (and found a supporting web-reference to this), whilst here we have him living in Droitwich. Not far apart I know, but definitely not the same place. Maybe he moved from one to the other. Does anyone have a more robust source for where he lived, a biography or anything like that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Behind The Wall Of Sleep (talkcontribs) 12:48, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

His birthplace is said to be Harlow, Essex on this site - while the site that is references says it is Matching Tye, Essex. And The Rik Mayall says himself that he was born in Cardiff (at about 3:10 in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZSkDgE6I3s) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.208.181.44 (talk) 22:03, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with File:Dropdeadfred.jpg

The image File:Dropdeadfred.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Return of the Jedi

This website confirms what I just noticed that Rik Mayall had a small part in Return of the Jedi. He plays a X-Wing pilot and can be seen within the first 5 minutes. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/10726202/Worst-film-ever-the-legend-of-Eldorado.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.145.154.199 (talk) 17:07, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

There is an error in the filmography - in blackadder goes forth he played 'squadron leader Flashheart', not 'Lord Flashheart'. This is correct in the earlier part of the article, and verifiable through IMDB which is already referenced.--Grimley517 (talk) 19:45, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Suicide?

...the Metropolitan Police said the death was not believed to be suspicious.
Am I right in assuming this is code for suicide? If there were not some such message to be gleaned from these words, there seems hardly any point in declaring there was NOT anything suspicious, as if something suspicious was the normal state of affairs and it's noteworthy when this is not the case. But then, this is police-speak we're talking about, so .... -- Jack of Oz   [pleasantries] 19:56, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

No. Absolutely not. This is police-speak for 'there isn't any evidence we know of to suggest a crime'. Nothing more. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:32, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
I think it's partly a question of context. I agree with Andy that the general meaning is "there is no suspicion of any crime." But one often hears that phrase used as a euphemism for "we're guessing it was suicide." The other (perhaps more telling) phrase is "police have confirmed they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the death." Martinevans123 (talk) 20:38, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Correct. He could've died from a number of things, which will need to be checked out, most likely by a medical examiner. The police say that so the public can rest easy there's no one offing comedians. — Wyliepedia 06:34, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
"It was very quick and we still don't know quite what happened but it was, you know, a seizure of some sort." Nothing confirmed, but not suicide. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:48, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
I'd suggest that the "recent deaths" template stays until a cause of death is formally announced. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:30, 11 June 2014 (UTC)
I put it back here a while ago. Chaheel Riens (talk) 12:43, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

Ade Edmondson tribute

I am not sure that the last sentence in Ade Edmondson's tribute should appear the way it does here. It seems in poor taste, but I suspect in the context of his tribute as a whole it does not come across that way. --P123ct1 (talk) 20:45, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

It seems a fair reflection of Edmondson and Mayall's irreverent style, and in that sense - I think - highly appropriate (both in its original context, and as a summary of what Mayall was about). Alfietucker (talk) 20:49, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Unless this turns out to be suicide. --P123ct1 (talk) 21:19, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Classic example of interpreting the written word. Edmondson surely did not mean ill will. Just a comment about someone close leaving this earth first. — Wyliepedia 06:38, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Come on, I know that is exactly Edmondson's style and he meant no harm by it. It just seems to me lacking in respect to highlight such a stark comment in Wikipedia within hours of a man's death. Perhaps I am being too sensitive. --P123ct1 (talk) 08:35, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Yes, I think you are, P123ct1. Edmondson was certainly his closest colleague, even best friend, over very many years. What's the good of a joke without a punchline? I'm pretty sure Edmondson would have expected an equally irreverend tribute from Mayall. And I guess it would be up to Mayall's family or management to raise objections. I noted that the BBC News at Ten respectfully edited the comment, but we're not so genteel here are we? Martinevans123 (talk) 08:53, 10 June 2014 (UTC)
The tribute has been explicitly cited in BBC News ([1]) and given Mayall himself once said in reference to his quad bike accident, "I beat Jesus Christ ... He was dead for three days at Easter." ([2]) it is perfectly within character, and was possibly made in tribute to John Cleese's similar quote at Graham Chapman's memorial service. It should stay. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:43, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

I am surprised my comment has elicited so much response. It sounds like a case of my lady doth protest too much. I seem to have touched a raw nerve. I am not insisting that the quote be removed. --P123ct1 (talk) 10:14, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

"That's no lady, that's my life" Martinevans123 (talk) 10:21, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Leave it be. It's not offensive. Coming from Ade, it's a term of endearment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:2422:98A9:7561:ECE6:C4FD:82CC (talk) 13:35, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Quad bike accident

Someone has just changed the clumsy "due to rain" (20:14 pm) to "because it was raining". (See text) Was that the reason? He could have refused to take the children with him not because it was raining, but because it had been raining, and he felt the ground was too unsafe and slippery to risk taking them with him on the new bike. Is that too fine a distinction for Wikipedia to concern itself with? --P123ct1 (talk) 21:43, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Found more details in an interview republished online in Rik Mayall Interviews and Articles Archive. Have tweaked the sentence again according to that source, given as a citation (hope it will do). Alfietucker (talk) 21:58, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Just had a look at that article. Cleverly reworked sentence! --P123ct1 (talk) 22:23, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

Influences

Do we have any WP:RS for the comedians that Mayall himself thought were his influences, rather than general posthumous comparisons? Martinevans123 (talk) 07:16, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

We now have: "John Cleese, Monty Python, The Three Stooges, Rowan Atkinson, Ronnie Barker" - all without any source(s) to support them. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:14, 17 June 2014 (UTC)
All removed by me - also "Influenced" as again no reliable sources given to verify these. Alfietucker (talk) 17:54, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

Danny Cohen quote in lede

I am doubtful we should put the opinion of Danny Cohen or quote him in the lede.

Also, the quote is inaccurate and seems made up. The link to the quote: Here has him saying something different. In the lede Cohen is reported to have said he had "fireball creativity" but I cant find that quote in the link reference provided. The link actually says: "BBC director of television Danny Cohen said Mayall was "a truly brilliant comedian". "His comic timing was outstanding and his screen presence unique. For a generation of viewers he was a true comedy hero." If we must have it, maybe put Cohen's opinion in the recognition section. Tremello (talk) 12:34, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

We can't have made-up quotations, especially as per BLP. So if it can't be adequately supported, I would certainly correct it. I'd also support moving it from the lede to the recognition section. But I would certainly object to removing it altogther. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:39, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
