Personal Info

Most of the personal info that I have posted on this site is shown on Nike's webpage that was created for Pau Gasol, and I have seen that site many times, if anyone is willing to question the information. This is a reliable website which was built by Nike. Gamloverks (talk) 01:29, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Good article nomination

I saw this article at WP:GAC and decided take a look (but I am not officially reviewing this article). A couple of things that I noticed just by skimming the article.

  1. Per WP:LEAD, the lead is way too short.
  2. Per WP:LAYOUT, the article has way too many section headers that have little content underneath them.
  3. There is a ton of unsourced content.

It would probably be a good idea to take care of these problems before a GA reviewer decides to review this article. Ice Cold Beer (talk) 19:15, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Fixed the majority of unsourced content, and retooled the headers so that most information that has to do with that season is included and information that did not have enough were grouped together. I'm still working on the lead though. Gamloverks (talk) 19:46, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
I have also redone the intro with some more information added in. anything else that should be improved? Gamloverks (talk) 20:27, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
A few things: the article still isn't up to GA standards. For instance, the lead still isn't up to GA quality and the sections are still too short. Read WP:GACR, and make sure that you go through the article, line by line, and make sure that the article satisfies our good article criteria. Take a look at some other good articles on active basketball players for some ideas on how to bring this one to GA (there are some good articles on NBA players listed at WP:NBA). While I've only skimmed the article, I did notice that the controversial nature of his trade to the Lakers is not mentioned. Ice Cold Beer (talk) 02:07, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I would also like to point out that this article is way better than it was just a few weeks ago. Although the GA nomination has been withdrawn, I'd like to see you keep working towards GA status. Ice Cold Beer (talk) 04:27, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I added the controversy surrounding the trade. I have been using articles such as Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash to get better. I'll continue to work on the articles as I find more information. I didn't just want to put unnecesary information in there, but I'll continue to look around. Gamloverks (talk) 20:54, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

References

Changed the references to their respective playoff years. If anyone can find a page that lists Memphis Franchise Records not in wikipedia, I would be most appreciative. Gamloverks (talk) 01:50, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

  • As per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates), dates shouldn't use th.
  • Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (numbers), please spell out source units of measurements in text.
  • If this article is about a person, please add {{persondata|PLEASE SEE [[WP:PDATA]]!}} along with the required parameters to the article - see Wikipedia:Persondata for more information.
  • If you were aiming for a good article, I would suggest using {{citeweb}}, {{citenews}}, etc. on the references.
  • The whole 2006-07 section is uncited. Add some references and/or citations.
  • Add a caption to the image in the infobox.
  • On the second image, in the caption, link "Grizzlies" (for example) to help those unfamiliar with the subject.
  • On the career statistics, consider adding something like this.
  • Other than that looks good. « Milk's Favorite Cookie ( talk / contribs) 01:41, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look! There are some different people along with me who are working on this article, albeit some don't say what they change. I'll try to work on the things above in the article. Gamloverks (talk) 14:46, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Dates have been fixed. Measurements have been spelled out. Linked both teams in the caption. I will work on the Person data. 2006-07 section is indeed cited. I'll work on the references for using citeweb and citenews. I'll continue to add more information as I see it, but otherwise, I still have some work to do on it. I'm also getting busy with graduation, so I've had little to no time at all. Gamloverks (talk) 14:47, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Added persondata, I've also merged topics because of too minimal content. Well, it's looking pretty good. Gamloverks (talk) 19:09, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Pau Gasol/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review. GA review – see WP:WIAGA for criteria

This article is in decent shape, but it needs more work before it becomes a Good Article.

  1. Is it well written?
    A. The prose is clear and concise, and the spelling and grammar are correct:
This sentence in the Bio. section, ---> "However, in his final season in Europe, Gasol averaged 11.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in just under 24 minutes per game, and after Barcelona was victorious in the Spanish National Cup, he was awarded the MVP of the tournament", seems to go nowhere and needs a little explaining. In the 2001-2005 section, there tends to be a lot of "In his [...] year with the Grizzlies", it would be best to split it up by stating it once and not keep repeating it. Is it necessary to include ---> "His team failed to make a fourth-straight appearance in the NBA Playoffs" for the 2006-07 section? In the Player Profile, I know what the article means by not being ejected, but a little explanation of it would be best for Gasol never being ejected from a game. Shouldn't the "Personal" section be "Personal life", (ex: Steve Nash, Dwyane Wade, and Yi Jianlian).
    B. It complies with the manual of style guidelines for lead sections, layout, words to watch, fiction, and list incorporation:
In the lead, it would be best to add (NBA) after "National Basketball Association", since the article does mention "NBA" and Los Angeles Lakers is linked twice and I suggest that it'd be linked once, per here. In the 2005-2006 section, the dates need to be fixed according to this.
  2. Is it verifiable with no original research, as shown by a source spot-check?
    A. It contains a list of all references (sources of information), presented in accordance with the layout style guideline:
    B. Reliable sources are cited inline. All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose):
Does Reference 4 cover ---> "Gasol began playing basketball with his school team, and he eventually signed with C.B. Cornella". If not, a source is needed for Gasol playing basketball and signing with Cornella. Source ---> "After moving to the senior team, Gasol played just eleven total minutes in the 1998-99 season, and averaged under 15 minutes per game in the next year". This ---> "In his fourth year with the Grizzlies, he scored 31 points and blocked four shots on January 11, 2005 against the Indiana Pacers to earn 5,000 points and 500 blocks in his career, becoming the 10th fastest player to reach 5,000 points/500 blocks since 1973-74", needs a source. Source ---> "In his fifth year with the team, he became the franchise’s all-time leading rebounder on Mar. 24/06 against the New York Knicks when he grabbed his 3,072nd rebound in a Grizzlies uniform". A source is needed for his broken foot injury in the 2006-07 section. Source ---> "and surpassed Shareef Abdur-Rahim as the franchise's all-time leader in free throw attempts on January 31 against the Dallas Mavericks". In the 2007-08 section, "On February 1, 2008, Gasol was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, making this the second team that he has played on since 2001, along with a 2010 second round draft pick for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie, rights to Marc Gasol (Pau's younger brother), and 2008 and 2010 first round draft picks", needs a source to all that info. A source is needed for this ---> "Kobe Bryant has also stated that playing with Gasol clicked from the start". in the 2007-08 section.
    C. It contains no original research:
    D. It contains no copyright violations nor plagiarism:
  3. Is it broad in its coverage?
    A. It addresses the main aspects of the topic:
    B. It stays focused on the topic without going into unnecessary detail (see summary style):
  4. Is it neutral?
It represents viewpoints fairly and without editorial bias, giving due weight to each:
In the Pre-NBA and NBA Draft, this ---> "and with Gasol", sounds like POV and may need to be re-written. In the First All-Star Game, it would be best to replace "for the first time in his career" to "making his first appearance". "In Gasol's first playoff win", needs to be re-written in the 2007-08 Playoffs.
  5. Is it stable?
It does not change significantly from day to day because of an ongoing edit war or content dispute:
  6. Is it illustrated, if possible, by images?
    A. Images are tagged with their copyright status, and valid non-free use rationales are provided for non-free content:
    B. Images are relevant to the topic, and have suitable captions:
  7. Overall:
    Pass or Fail:
This article is in need of a lot of sourcing. But, if the statements above can be answered, I will pass the article. Good luck with improving this article!

Sant Boi?

Well, in the first sentence appear that "Pau Gasol born July 6, 1980 in Sant Boi de Llobregat" Instead in the Personal life: "he was born in Sant Pau Hospital, where both of his parents worked, in the city of Barcelona". I don't know which is correct, but a person can only born in one place. Acording to external links, he was born in Barcelona. So I think Sant Boi it's incorrect. Saquet (talk) 16:03, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll have to do some fixing with that because I've had miscellaneous vandalism on this page. Gamloverks (talk) 20:50, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Slanted eye picture

This picture is discussed twice, in both the end of the player profile section and in the controversy section, they both seem to be more or less identical, I think we should remove one. Dukemmm (talk) 18:26, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

That seems fair. Just decide which one you want to get rid of. Chengwes (talk) 02:47, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Fouled out

Gasol did foul out for the first time some weeks ago http://bleacherreport.com/articles/158951-lakers-tune-out-the-jazz-in-first-round-opener-113-100 , so that part of the article is now outdated and needs correction —Preceding unsigned comment added by Frtldrdhl (talkcontribs) 06:18, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

2008-2009 Year

Seeing as we've only got one line mentioning the 2008-2009 playoff run, I do think it would be better if we expanded on that somewhat, instead of leaving it just at the one liner. It's a championship year, so we should probably do some more work with that. Gamloverks (talk) 05:38, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Full name

I noticed that his family names are written as Gasol i Sàez, with a grave accent over the letter a, but the name of his brother is written as Gasol i Sáez, with an acute accent. I don't know which is correct, but one of them is incorrect. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Njk92 (talkcontribs) 03:54, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

That's a good point, it will require some research, but maybe using his official NBA profile would be best at this time? Gamloverks (talk) 05:38, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
You can't put an acute accent over an "a" in catalan.79.148.60.166 (talk) 14:03, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Gasol is a catalan surname, but Sáez is a Spanish one. No person in the world is called Sàez, that is anti-spanish integrism, and Pau Gasol is a very pro-Spanish guy. In fact, putting this à in his second surname can be considered an attack in Wikipedia by the Catalan separatists, declared enemies of Pau Gasol. So put Sáez back. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.32.138.240 (talk) 11:31, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

As you can read here it is spelled Sáez: http://www.acb.com/jugador.php?id=A2C --80.37.139.14 (talk) 07:51, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Pronunciation of his name

I don't know if there's any convention to write the pronunciation of a name, but being Spanish I'd pronounce his name as Pow gas-all (like in gas[oline] and the 'a' like in All-[stars] or tall or call not like 'shall' or 'pal' as the article suggests). --150.214.94.101 (talk) 11:23, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah in Spanish pronounciation it is POW GAH-SOHL! —Preceding unsigned comment added by SancLunatic (talkcontribs) 06:29, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

Being myself both Catalan and Spanish speaker I can say that the sound translation of his name is wrong. It is pronounced PAW not POW. 'Pau' means 'Pablo' in Spanish ('Paul' in English). 'Pau' also means 'peace' in Catalan. And POW (written as 'pou' in Catalan') means 'well'. His surname is pronounced in Catalan 'gah-ZOHL', with a vibriting 's' like the English 'z' and 'gah-SOHL' with a 's' like the English word 'sound' in Spanish. His second surname is written with an '`' accent in Catalan (Sàez) and with an '´' written accent in Spanish (Sáez) (the '`' written accent does not exist in Spanish). (Toni)--83.37.77.194 (talk) 09:21, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

But his name is not in spanish, his name is in Catalan, and the O is Gasol we pronounce different. Pau, in catalan, means peace, is a typical boy name. I propose to change the mention spanish name to a catalan name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.184.161.21 (talk) 20:26, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

You should notice that Pau Gasol Sáez is in Facebook, and his name there is like that "Pau Gasol Saez" (The accent on Sáez is missed, provably because he does not use a Spanish keyboard). But not "Pau Gasol i Saez". He is Catalan, right, and in Catalan language traditionally u link the two second names with an "i", right. But, you can have your name also without an "i", being Catalan. If he writes his own name withoug "i" between both surnames, maybe he does not even has it in his passport... I think you should respect his own spelling, and not change it just because you wish he wished to write it in the Catalan way instead the Spanish usual way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.193.6.242 (talk) 16:59, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Pau Gasol is Spanish

Pau Gasol born is Spain, his official nacionality is Spanish. Catalonia is a region of Spain and the reference says "Native of Catalonia, a region on the coast of Spain", AND? He is still Spanish and Catalonia is still a Region of Spain. If somebody wants to know the region of Barcelona, it's easy reading the article of Barcelona, but his nacionality is Spanish and only Spanish. He is Spanish, Catalonian, Barcelonian, European, Sanboyan.... but his only official nacionality is Spanish--84.122.175.235 (talk) 10:22, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Just changed it back to Spanish and born in the region of Barcelona under personal info. Someone had changed his nationality to "French" and birthplace to "Paris, France" for some reason.M4077 (talk) 07:41, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

A must add section for a great player

Why is there no seperate section for his Olympic participation. Many great players have it why not him (his brother does and he's not even close to Pau's athleticism) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.230.3.250 (talk) 02:31, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

The "Player profile" section

This section needs a renewal, for example, he has been in NBA 10 years, to my mind the stats are old and he had an injury. Fix, if you can.--Edgars2007 (talk) 14:34, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Okay...

This is getting ridiculous, are these changes even logical? I wanted a good intro, and I created a good intro, why wasn't that a good intro? I'm kind of trying to figure out why it got changed, whoever made the changes, please enlighten me! Gamloverks (talk) 00:02, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

The people who changed it don't even have a user page except for one, what is going on? Unless someone explains why it was changed, I'm going to revert it back. Gamloverks (talk) 00:23, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

He is catalan and hes name is : Pau Gasol i Sàez, he is born in Spain but he is from Catalonia that is region inside the spain, I am sorry, but if this information is not in hes wikipedia page it would be strange, most people have their identity listed as well. Nobody is saying that he is not spanish as spain is a country but he is also catalan and everybody knows, or should know, that catalans have their own identity inside spain, including language and culture, this is reality and nobody can argue against it, it would be like saying that there is no difference between native americans and americans. Spain is not only country in the world with more than one language and culture, I think all countries are like this, being against peoples identity in my book is like being rasist. Let people have their own identity, please. Barcelona, Spain does not exist, it is ( including IMDB and offically ) Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Spain is famous enough, why always such a fear against people who lives in spain and plays for spain but have more than one identity ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.125.105.169 (talk) 16:27, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

His nationality is Spanish. If you look for Woody Allen in wikipedia, you'll find out that he is (surprise, surprise!!) AMERICAN, not Newyorker. Pau is not catalonian or barcelonian or wathever. He is Spanish. (This is common sense, for ****'s sake) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.62.37.2 (talk) 13:00, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Could we avoid using rude language? His origins have to change since it may lead to misinterpretation: Being Spanish does not imply being Catalan. On the other hand, being Catalan does imply being Spanish. Hence, a reference to his Catalan origins must be pointed out.
Also, it is a common consensus in wikipedia (even if I do not personally agree with it) to use nationality in terms of [List of Sovereing States] and not nations. Both considerations get us to a solution approved and used in several ocasions with other biographies regarding Catalan personalities:
"Pau Gasol i Sàez (pronounced POW gah-SOHL[1]; IPA [ˈpaʊ̯ gəˈzɔɫ]) (born July 6, 1980 in Sant Boi de Llobregat, Catalonia) is a 2.13 m (7 ft.) Catalan Spanish professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA)."
It's a short, not tedious text that states clearly his Spanish and Catalan origins.--Civit cardona (talk) 11:03, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
After nearly a week, seems that nobody cares. Hence should I understand you find the change appropiate?--Civit cardona (talk) 07:26, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
I've been busy with many things but I'm not really good at speaking any other language except english, so I'm not really sure. Gamloverks (talk) 05:34, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

His nacionality is Spanish, the region of spain is not important, if anyone want to know in what region is Barcelona, go a look Barcelona article, but the nacionality of Pau is spanish, and ONLY Spanish.--Codorado (talk) 00:52, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Why do other Spaniards insist in their imperialist outlook? A Scottish or Welsh person is correctly identified as such, even though Scotland or Wales are not sovereign countries (they have some devolved powers very much like Catalonia does, but belong to the United Kingdom) and even though they are British citizens (according to their passports). Why are Spanish people so afraid of this recognition of Catalonia (and the Basque country and Galicia)? This is very antidemocratic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.67.148.41 (talk) 16:31, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

It's standard to list a person's nationality in the lead. Other specific details of origin are generally left for the body of the article, unless it is pertinent to the person's notability. I do not think his being Catalan is a major part of his notability. See also WP:OPENPARAGRAPH.—Bagumba (talk) 17:37, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Maybe it was changed because the original was taken in 2008 and the new one was taken in 2013? Please add "Gold 2004 Athens National Team" under the medal section, because Pao Gasol played for Spain and won a gold medal, but the article neglected to add the gold medal in the medal section. The medal section for the summer olympics only lists 2008, 2012, which is inaccurate considering his greatest olympic achievement was attained in 2004, while winning a gold.

first sentence, missing a word

first sentance: Pau Gasol Sáez (Catalan pronunciation: [ˈpaw ɣəˈzɔl], Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpau ɣaˈsol]; born July 6, 1980) is a Spanish professional basketball player who for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

possible correction: ...who plays for... --Benderstream (talk) 06:35, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

@Benderstream: Thanks for catching that. I simply removed the "who". Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 07:26, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

First paragraph missing a word

I put the word team in the sentence "He is a six-time NBA All-Star and a four-time All-NBA team selection, twice on the second team and twice on the third team." Because without the word team it is highly confusing. What is an "All-NBA"? There is no such thing as an "All-NBA".

When I first read the article, I struggled to understand the meaning of "All-NBA", and I have been an NBA fan for almost two decades. And the reason is that there is no such thing as "All-NBA", it is "All-NBA team".

I checked other Wikipedia articles of basketball players, and they do employ the same policity of mentioned "All-NBA team" selections, not "All-NBA selections".

In Tony Parker's Wikipedia article, it is said that "Parker was named to six NBA All-Star games, three All-NBA Second Teams, and an All-NBA Third Team."

In LeBron James's Wikipedia article, it is said that "James was selected to the All-NBA First Team twelve times (all-time record)"

In Kobe Bryant's Wikipedia article, it is said that Bryant was "15-time member of the All-NBA Team"

In Kevin Durant's Wikipedia article, it is said that Durant has "been selected to nine All-NBA teams".

I am not saying it was completely bad before. Just saying that, in my opinion, it is better to include the word team to avoid any sort of confussion and to improve the clarity of the content. It is also important to note that in the vast majority of Wikipedia articles of basketball players, it is sad that they have "All-NBA team" selections, not "All-nba" selections. It seems to be the general policiy of Wikipedia. I wold not recoment excluding the word team, unless there is a very solid reason to do so. James343e (talk) 20:57, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
