Merger proposal

edit

I propose that MOOC be merged into MUVE. I think that the content in the MOOC article is promoting the works of George Siemens and Stephen Downes above what could be considered WP:NPOV. The basic aspects of a MOOC can easily be explained in the context of MUVEs and in particular MUVLEs, and the MUVE article is of a reasonable size in which the merging of MOOC will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. I think that MOOCs with their focus on learning are distinct from MUVEs. MUVLE is not a common term (although I note that muvle.co.uk and muvle.com have been registered but are not being used). The example given in the entry has been evident in some MOOCs where learners have self-organised in spaces such as Second Life but this term could hardly subsume the term MOOC. --Francesbell (talk) 08:51, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose I have an obvious bias here VCHunter as I've also been working on MOOCs for four years. Could you lay out your thinking as to how this article seems to you to be 'promoting' the work of George Siemens and Stephen Downes as opposed to tracking a very important development in the field of education? You've been very clear that you think it's promotion, but we've not heard your reasoning. Also, an MUVE is primarily about community in an environment, a MOOC is not about environments but about learning and ideas. --Davecormier (talk) 00:01, 8 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Two points. Firstly, like Davecormier, I believe that the existing article is both objective and well referenced, showing no bias toward any individuals. Secondly, a MOOC has clear distinctions from a MUVE, as described by all commenters above. In addition, MOOC is a widely used term -- particularly in the past year -- warranting an independent Wikipedia article. Using the simple metric of Google search results: MOOC has 2,380,000 results, all relating to Massive Open Online Courses. MUVE has 1,900,000 results, but no results on the first page (excluding the Wikipedia article) and just one on the second page of search results relating to Multi-User Virtual Environments. • Oppose MOOC is an end, MUVE is a means. There may be MOOCs that use MUVEs or rather MUVLEs as Learning platforms (in my opinion there should be) but there aren't any to speak of. So the topics are not only different, in practice they barely influence each other. I propose to erase the proposal in discussion since it has no chance of success. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avalord (talkcontribs) 20:41, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

I removed the "Merge from |MOOC |discuss=Talk:MUVE#Merger proposal |date=July 2012" template. --Jeff Ogden (W163) (talk) 19:52, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
