Adding additional Japanese cases from 2020 prefecture reports

It's September, which is the month the 2020 round of Japanese prefecture reports are released. Could any editor fluent in Japanese please provide links (from only reliable sources, not social media) to 2020 reports containing full names and dates of birth for individuals age 112+? Yamaguchi, Oita, Fukuoka, Osaka, Mie, Okinawa, Chiba, Hyogo, and Nara prefectures would be a great place to start. It would also be helpful if they could check if Kahoru Furuya is included in the 2020 report of Shizuoka Prefecture, and Miyo Hatakeyama in the 2020 Akita prefecture report. Thank you for any help that can be provided. Newshunter12 (talk) 02:56, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

Could any editor capable of reading Japanese please verify whether this source contains the name and full birthdate of Katsue Kurimoto, of Nara Prefecture? She would be 113 years old if that makes it a little easier to locate. Thank you for any help that can be provided. After doing some research, I have learned Miyo Hatakeyama was not included in the 2020 Akita Prefecture report and is likely dead. As her current source, last years report, is over 1 year old, I will be removing her. Newshunter12 (talk) 16:55, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping. The document states that the oldest announced person in the prefecture is 110 years old, then there's a note stating that the oldest resident is actually 113 but wishes to remain anonymous. Of course we know her name from previous reports, but considering the WP:BLP policy, I wonder if we should just list her as "Anonymous from Nara", citing this source. The problem then is that this particular source does not give her exact birth date, and then we are back to sourcing the birth date from an earlier source, that also contains the name. Thoughts? — JFG talk 19:42, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
@JFG Thank you for taking the time to share this insight. Coupled with what the editor below discovered, it would probably be best to leave her off the list unless a better source surfaces in the future (ex. GRG validation or next year's report). Very unfortunate, but it seems too OR for us to piece together a name and date of birth for this woman. Technically, a very old person could have moved out of the prefecture and another moved in, and we could accidently create a fake persona. A bit like the argument against Jeanne Calment, actually, that the documents refer to different people. For the record, if an exact date of birth had been provided, I agree with you that "Anonymous from/of Nara", would be the right way to list her here. Newshunter12 (talk) 03:14, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
Hello everyone,
Officially Mrs. Kurimoto is an anonymous 113-year-old woman. She actually has never been officially named by the prefecture. For example, this source from Nara Prefecture two years ago simply calls her an anonymous 111-year-old:
https://m.facebook.com/gosegirl/posts/1895951427162576
and obviously the source from this year doesn’t name her either. Gose City referenced her by name in 2014, but not her birth date:
http://www.city.gose.nara.jp/cmsfiles/contents/0000001/1031/141101.pdf (pg 2)
The only source with name and birth date is this Facebook post:
https://m.facebook.com/kazunori.i.kurimoto/posts/10220678508410048
and that probably doesn’t meet our standards.
Thank you for your time.
Legoshi02 (talk) 21:14, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
Hello everyone,
As far as I know, the official report from Shizuoka Prefecture is in print only. I can’t find it online.
However, Yahoo Japan has mentioned Mrs. Kahoru Furuya (1908.2.18) by name. It doesn’t have her birthdate, but it’s an alive confirmation as of 21 September.
https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/5bb002a012d816526e331f53ac035446d9f5a55d
Thank you for your time.
Legoshi02 (talk) 20:49, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
@Legoshi02 Thank you very much for the information you shared about these two women. Given what you and JFG discovered, I don't think we can add Mrs. Kurimoto to this list unless a better source comes out in the future. It would just be too Original Research or relying on unreliable sources for us to add her as is. You are correct that Facebook isn't considered a reliable source by Wikipedia. I have added the source you provided for Kahoru Furuya to the article. Since we have a reliable source that gives her name and exact date of birth, a recent reliable source proving life was all we needed.
Is it possible you could please check for sources on the oldest people in Okinawa Prefecture? The prefecture report doesn't provide both names and exact dates of birth to add anyone, but there are three 112-year-old women there. Putting aside Hama Yasukawa, whose already validated by GRG, there is also a 113-year-old anonymous woman and 112-year-old Tomiko Itooka from Hyōgo Prefecture. It would be great help if you could please check for any other local sources on them so they can be added. Thank you for any help that can be provided. Newshunter12 (talk) 03:52, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your help @Newshunter12 in improving this article!
The three 112-year-old women in Okinawa Prefecture (https://www.pref.okinawa.jp/site/kodomo/korei/zaitaku/documents/r02_p7teiseigo.pdf) are Setsuko Moriyama, Matsu Gaja, and Nahi Yonamine. The dates of birth for Mrs. Moriyama and Mrs. Gaja are unknown, but we know Mrs. Nahi Yonamine’s date of birth:
http://www.vill.kitanakagusuku.lg.jp/site/htdocs/kouhou/200410/03.html
The above source from Kitanakagusuku village says that Mrs. Yonamine was born in Meiji 41 March 9 = 9 March 1908.
As for the anonymous woman from Hyōgo: no official sources report her date of birth. Some Facebook and Twitter posts from the past few years indicate she was born on 29 April 1907, but this doesn’t meet our criteria.
Mrs. Tomiko Itooka is in a similar situation. An Instagram post (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxz8y_YHB8f/) seems to indicate her date of birth as 23 May 1908, but again, this isn’t enough for us.
Glad to help! Thank you for your time and effort.

@Legoshi02 Thank you very much for all of your research. I have added Mrs. Nahi Yonamine to the article with the two sources you provided. Newshunter12 (talk) 03:44, 26 September 2020 (UTC)

Ruth Apilado

Ruth Apilado appears on List of living centenarians with an age old enough to be listed here. Should she be added, or the criteria by which she is excluded be made clearer? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.8.187.22 (talk) 13:40, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

I looked for a recent source stating her age, but could not find anything even confirming her 110th birthday. Either she's very discreet, or she's dead -- or both. — JFG talk 12:45, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

The last living survivor of the Bath School Disaster in 1927 Michigan. She was born December 16th, 1907. As per her daughter Loraine Rees' obituary, she was still alive as of July 18th, 2020.[1] Yet I don't see her mentioned in this article. I thought maybe she had died since then so I checked for the most recent revision before July 18th, 2020 and she wasn't mentioned there either. Can we get her added or get a source indicating that she died sometime between July 18, 2020 and today? 98.176.148.115 (talk) 18:55, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Obituaries of other people are not enough to add someone to this list. A reliable, recent, and independent source for proof of life about her would be needed. Newshunter12 (talk) 01:23, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

Japanese cases

@Legoshi02 Hello, I hope you have been keeping well. I was wondering if you could find any recent reliable sources (containing exact dates of birth and under one year old) for Katsumi Ando (Mie Prefecture), Mitsu Katsuta (Kanagawa Prefecture), Shimi Kushiyama (Kagoshima Prefecture), and Take Taniguchi (Hokkaidō Prefecture)? They are now old enough to be added to this list or the hidden section of people waiting to be added. Thank you very much for any help that you can provide. Mrs. Eleftheria

Hi, the new entry about Mrs Eleftheria doesn't seem v. serious. Do you think we can keep it? The link takes to a newspaper full of articles like "12 answers to "clik in the shop": How will it work" and other kinds of articles which seems more like hidden advertising. There are lot of articles all over the world about people of 118 y.o. and more so we should have links more serious than this one before adding someone!--Fondouce (talk) 13:35, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, that one probably belongs on the longevity claims list if it hasn't been thoroughly verified. Ionmars10 (talk) 15:32, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
Unless someone can provide evidence that the source fails WP:RS, which means taking it to WP:RSN and probably classing it the same as the Daily Mail, then this entry qualifies for inclusion here. It does not qualify for inclusion in Longevity claims. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 16:58, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

Hey everyone, actual news about one of the removed people from the list: The oldest Hungarian woman is living as of today, she was talked greetings for her 113th birthday by the mayor of her city "Baja, Hungary". Clearly a bogus age claim. Does not meet the criteria for inclusion in this article. Could be included in Longevity claims, but that would devalue the entries already there. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 03:25, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

Addition of Hazel Plummer to Oldest Living People

I think that Hazel Plummer (born June 19, 1908) should be added to the list. There is a very recent article about her from December 2020 when she received her COVID-19 vaccine. The article describes her as the oldest resident of Massachusetts at the age of 112. Bromleychuck (talk) 14:03, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

@Bromleychuck While there are numorous reliable sources that have regularly talked about this woman, including the raft of copy-cat articles in December regarding her vaccination against COVID-19, the problem remains (as I told you on my talk page in October) that none of the reliable sources state her exact date of birth. Born in 1908 or a Facebook sourced date doesn't cut it, so she cannot be included on this list unless a reliable source states her exact date of birth. Newshunter12 (talk) 17:20, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Here is an article that does include Hazel Plummer's date of birth. [lcca.com/locations/ma/nashoba/nashoba-valley/blog/Life-Care-Center-of-Nashoba-Valley-resident-celebrated-as-oldest-in-state]. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bromleychuck (talkcontribs) 21:50, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

That is explicitly sourced from the blog you mentioned above, which is an unreliable source, so it is still invalid for our use. I've researched her case extensively, and for a significant length of time have been unable to find a reliable source that gives her exact date of birth. Please stop your disruption of trying to insert an invalid entry into this article. If and when a reliable source becomes available stating her exact date of birth and if there is recent proof of life, rest assured she will be added promptly. Newshunter12 (talk) 17:02, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

I resent your labeling of my questioning about a possible entry to the list as a disruption. I honestly thought the second source looked valid, but obviously it is not up to the standards required. Treating someone who is merely asking about a question about an entry in such an obnoxious manner is unacceptable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:9000:A505:6C69:1963:38D3:9CDC:E740 (talk) 17:33, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

She has now been added to List of the oldest living people using an old valid source that gives her exact date of birth and a source I discovered about her recent COVID-19 vaccination. Jorge Duran Coral

Jorge Duran Coral from Mexico at 112 years and 5 days should be on this list near the bottom in the 48th spot; he is older than the three women in the bottom three spots, all of whom are under the age of 112. If memory serves me correctly, he was on this list recently. What happened here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.4.39.212 (talk) 11:16, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

He has never been included in this article. Upon checking, I found no reliable sources that discussed this man as a supercentenarian, let alone recently, so he does not qualify for inclusion in this article. To be included, a person needs an exact date of birth and proof of life in the past year, both reliably sourced. Social media, blogs, self-published sources and the like are not considered reliable by Wikipedia. Newshunter12 (talk) 18:59, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Marcel Meys

Marcel Meys is listed in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_verified_oldest_people as being alive at 111 years 330 days, so should be at number 50 on this list

aliendave (talk) 07:32, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

No. He has not been shown by reliable sources to have been alive in well over a year, so he does not qualify for inclusion in this article. Anyone is free to remove him from that other article on the same grounds. Hopefully, there will be coverage of a 112th birthday, but please know that obvious SC claims like this and the woman above are kept off for a reason. Threads are not needed for these people as experienced editors monitor these cases and add them to the article whenever possible. Newshunter12 (talk) 15:27, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Ruth Apilado

Shouldn't Ruth Apilado be in this article too? She is 113 and still alive. Stephen"Zap" (talk) 21:18, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

That commentary of old recollections and hearsay is basically a self-published letter to the editor by someone who last spoke with her over a decade ago, not reliable coverage. She still does not qualify for inclusion in this article. Newshunter12 (talk) 21:10, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
Perhaps you missed the part of the text where the writer mentions having recently been in contact with Ruth's son? Not that I could care less if she's listed in Wikipedia's sub-par supercentenarian lists, just want to point out that you are evidently incorrect. :) OscarL 13:28, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
I was well aware of his alleged undated and vague phone call with a relative, which fell under my above point, hearsay. It would also be original research even if it happened. Self-published letters to the editor, pictures of birthday cakes on Facebook, and find-a-grave are not reliable sources. Newshunter12 (talk) 20:01, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
I think letters to the editor are (or should be) a bit of a grey area when it comes to RS in Wikipedia. If the writer is a public figure, then that's more credible than some random person's editorial. Also, this isn't an opinion piecce; the text is structured in the same way that an "actual" article would be: Conveying information to the readers about a person, sprinkled with personal recollections. As for proof that she is 113, it is beyond far-fetched that David would put his credibility on the line with that headline if it were to turn out that he didn't verify her living status before publication. If following the guidelines strictly is more important than using common sense, then I agree that she should remain off the list. So I'll give you that! OscarL 14:36, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Japanese cases

Hello @Legoshi02. Thank you very much for your recent contributions to this article. I was wondering if it would be possible for you to look for reliable sources on these women, so that they can be added to this article? They are: Matsu Hayafuji (21 February 1909) of Shiga Prefecture, Yasue Okai (25 November 1908) and Sadako Yamada (3 January 1909) of Ōsaka Prefecture, Kamado Miyaguni (5 July 1909) of Okinawa Prefecture, Masue Ōura (13 August 1909) of Nagasaki Prefecture, Hide Hamabe (3 December 1908) of Miyazaki Prefecture, Shinobu Hayashi (15 March 1909) of Kumamoto Prefecture, Mitsu Katsuta (18 February 1909) of Kanagawa Prefecture, Take Taniguchi (5 February 1909) of Hokkaidō Prefecture.

I have just found reliable sourcing for Kineko Takahashi (10 July 1909) of Miyagi Prefecture and will add her to the article shortly. Any help you are able to give with this article is much appreciated. Sincerely, Newshunter12 (talk) 17:34, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

Likewise, thank you Newshunter12 for your contributions to the article. I apologize for never responding to your ping last year.
Of the women you mentioned, I believe that we can only add Mrs. Taniguchi and Mrs. Ōura. I will let you decide:
Mrs. Take Taniguchi (1909.2.5)
Hokkaidō Prefecture reported Mrs. Taniguchi’s date of birth in 2018. It is page 2 of this document:

Mrs. Yasue Okai (1908.11.25)
This is the source for Mrs. Okai’s birth date, from Higashiōsaka City.

It is an alive confirmation as of 27 February; a picture of Mrs. Okai is included. However, she is not mentioned by name. There is no alive confirmation from the past year that mentions her by name, that I know of.
Mrs. Hide Hamabe (1908.12.3)
Mrs. Hamabe’s birth date comes from Facebook and Twitter posts. She has been mentioned in many official publications, but the most recent was in September 2018. All subsequent official reporting comes from Facebook.
Mrs. Sadako Yamada (1909.1.3)
I don’t know the official source for Mrs. Yamada’s date of birth. She’s been confirmed alive as of November 2020 by her care home, but again, no source for the date of birth.

http://www.daikyokai.or.jp/img/tayoris/fushio.pdf (November 2020)
Mrs. Mitsu Katsuta (1909.2.18)
The closest I can get for Mrs. Katsuta’s date of birth is this article from 2019:
https://www.townnews.co.jp/0401/2019/09/13/497611.html
which simply states that she was born in February 1909.

She was last confirmed alive in September 2020:
https://www.kanaloco.jp/news/social/article-234446.html
Mrs. Matsu Hayafuji (1909.2.21)
Mrs. Hayafuji’s birth date comes from Takashima City:
http://www.city.takashima.lg.jp/www/contents/1504529035223/simple/H29_0904_4.pdf
However, she has not explicitly been confirmed alive since 2018. She is likely the anonymous woman who was reported as the second-oldest in Shiga Prefecture last year:
https://www.pref.shiga.lg.jp/ippan/kenkouiryouhukushi/koureisya/314397.html
but this does not meet our criteria.
Mrs. Shinobu Hayashi (1909.3.15)
Mrs. Hayashi’s date of birth comes from this 2019 news source:
http://web.archive.org/web/20191215125435/http:/rkk.jp/news/backno_page.php?id=NS003201912111651210111
Mrs. Hayashi became the oldest living person in Kumamoto Prefecture on 3 July 2020, but I don’t have a source for this. She may have passed away in December 2020.

Mrs. Kamado Miyaguni (1909.7.5)
Mrs. Miyaguni’s date of birth comes from this blog post:
http://www.cosmos.ne.jp/~miyako-m/htm/ganzu/060118.htm
She was confirmed alive in September 2020 as the fifth oldest person in Okinawa Prefecture, but only as an anonymous woman from Miyakojima City.

Thank you very much for your help. Have a lovely day. Legoshi02 (talk) 07:38, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your research and help with these cases. I have added Mrs. Taniguchi and Mrs. Ōura to the article using sources and information you provided, and concur with your reasons why we can't add the other women at this time. Collectively speaking, we have recently added five Japanese women to this article, which is a major improvement. It would be great if we could collaborate like this again in September, when the latest round of Prefecture reports come out. No worries about the ping last year. Take care. Newshunter12 (talk) 20:44, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
Good call using a single source for Mrs. Taniguchi. I may have gone a bit overboard on sources.
Also, I forget if it was you who proposed this, but it was also a good decision to shorten the list to 50 people. It's a lot more manageable now.
I will definitely be back in September. Talk to you then - and have a restful summer!

Japanese cases

Hello, @Legoshi02. I hope you have been doing well the past few months and enjoying your summer, as I did. Things returned mostly to normal again during the Summer where I live, though the pendulum is swinging right back towards 2020 again for the aptly named Fall season! Thank you for your recent edits to this article, as they were very helpful to improving it. I was wondering if you could please find sources for Koyo Hirai, born March 10 1909, and Maki Hirabayashi, born October 17, 1909, both of Hokkaidō Prefecture?

Any other cases you are able to find, such as from Okinawa (whose prefecture report I have yet to see this year), would be most helpful. Thank you very much for any additional help you are able to provide improving this article. It is much appreciated. On a side note, yes, it was my idea to shorten the list to 50 entries! I am glad you also find the list much more manageable now, which was my chief goal with the change. I found new sources for some other "younger" Japanese women that I will be sure to add in later months as 1910 finds its way onto the list over time. This seems like our smoothest collaboration yet, with only Mrs. Ine Kizu appearing to have died without reliable sourcing and a few case research requests. Newshunter12 (talk) 00:28, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello, @Newshunter12. I am doing well and did have a wonderful and Memorable summer. For a while I was able to forget about horrible daily news and just enjoy myself. I'm glad you enjoyed your summer too, and I hope you feel well-rested. You're right - it indeed seems like everything is about to Fall again. I feel like we've been stuck in a waking dream since March 2020.
You've also been fantastic with this article! The 50-person list makes the September updates a lot easier. Today you also beat me to a few changes. Thank you for your diligence.
As for the people you mentioned, these are all "near-misses." There are a lot of people I'd like to add but they sadly don't meet our criteria. I'll explain each person:
Mrs. Koyo Hirai (1909.3.10) used to be anonymous. This year, however, she has embraced media attention including articles and a video. However, all of these sources simply state that she is 112 years old, born 1909. The only source for her date of birth is this Instagram post from her granddaughter.
For Mrs. Maki Hirabayashi (1909.10.17) we have the opposite issue. Her date of birth is reported in this 2013 publication. However, recently the family seems to have opted for privacy, which I respect. Mrs. Hirabayashi is third-oldest in Hokkaidō, but her name is "not public" on page 6. The most recent report to name her is published 5 April 2020.
Okinawa Prefecture is always luck. This year we cannot add anyone else. On page 8 we see the oldest in the prefecture. Dates of birth are not listed and we have to go with outside sources.
First is Mrs. Matsu Gaja (1908.2), date of birth incomplete.
Second is Mrs. Yonamine, whom you've already updated.
Third is Mrs. Ushi Makishi (1909.2), date of birth incomplete.
Next are two anonymous women. One of them is Kamado Miyaguni (1909.7.5) whose date of birth comes from this 2005 page. It looks like a blog but in fact is the old page for Miyako Mainichi Shimbun, so it is reliable. However, Mrs. Miyaguni has chosen anonymity this year and there are no sources explicitly naming her. The other anonymous woman is Mrs. Kame Uema, exact date of birth unknown.
The sixth and seventh are Mrs. Kikue Taira (1910.4.26) and Mrs. Haruko Mekaru (1910.7.5) who are both too "young" for the list right now.
Mrs. Masa Matsumoto (1909.11.29) has been confirmed alive on 14 September. However, her date of birth is simply stated to be in November 1909, and the exact date comes from Twitter. Another near-miss.
Respect for the Aged Day is on Monday, and we can expect sporadic updates through October. We have already had the anonymous woman from Fukuoka reveal her name. Stay vigilant, there may be some pleasant surprises.
You have been wonderful to work with. Thank you very much for your time.
Legoshi02 (talk) 08:01, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
@Legoshi02 Thank you for your very kind words. Do not worry about the length of the addendum and subsequent policy based deletion, which was bound to happen after all our hard work improving the list. It is easy to go back into the page history, copy the code, and re-add whenever new entries are needed. The important thing is that we have so many cases researched for an accurate list and compiled for when the time comes. Newshunter12 (talk) 19:13, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

I notice that Barbara Barton (10/12/1908) has fallen off your list. At the moment I have no new articles etc beyond the previously listed 112th birthday notice from the paper. I can assure you she was alive when my mom (her daughter) visited her this weekend. Short of a newspaper article, which isn't happening now that her birthday has passed, what do you need to prove she's alive?

Can the list be extended all the way down to know how many people born in the 1900s are still alive?

Just a few years ago everybody known that was born in the 1800s had died out with Emma Morano on 15 April 2017, however I just want to know how many we have left for the 1900s, can we put everybody born on 2 January 2000 or earlier on this article?, I’m just curious?, so why hasn’t the list extended all the way down to the start of 2000.

Andrelino Vieira da Silva

Yesterday I saw some Brazilian media outlets spreading the story of a man who recently turned 121. The original news story, published here by G1 (one of the biggest and most reliable sources in Brazil), has a picture of his ID, in which his age is confirmed.

If that is true, this is the oldest man ever, the second oldest person ever and the oldest living person. I found it quite strange that no sources have mentioned the fact that he is breaking several records at once. Would this source be enough to add him to the list? As a journalist myself I just find this story way too earth-shattering for sources to act so casual towards it. Victor Lopes Fala!C 16:46, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

That is not how it works here, as this isn't the GRG. Only WP:V (along with an exact date of birth and proof of life within 1 year) needs to be met to be included. Not exactly solid evidence. Even if the video itself is showing what was put in front of the camera accurately (deepfakes are a thing, after all) there's no evidence that what was put in front of the camera is itself not faked. Try official records following customary verification done by reliable researchers. Seanette (talk) 20:41, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
Irrelevant. The oldest verified person is Lucile Randon, anyone claiming to be older is merely a claim and belongs in Longevity claims. Unless Mazibuko's claim is verified she will never meet the criteria for inclusion in this article. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 22:12, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
Are we talking about some double standards here? Why wouldn't the National ID Card issued by a government count as an evidence though? 120.16.150.20 (talk) 23:20, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
No. There is a long history of people claiming to be extremely old with no proof. Government issued ID cards are not proof, the vast majority having been issued relatively recently and based on hearsay rather than actual evidence. This is why Guinness World Records requires more substantial evidence before verifying someone as the "World's Oldest Person". DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 23:52, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

Would this Ouest-France article from July 2nd work as a reliable source? It's about the same photographer whose blog was linked by the IP. The article is subscription-only, but just as the text starts to gray out, it mentions his portrait of Tessier: "Cet habitant de Saint-Malô-du-Bois, ex-banquier, a tenu son pari un peu fou en livrant ce jeudi 30 juin le 365e portrait: Marie Rose Tessier, 112 ans" (rough translation: This resident of Saint-Malô-du-Bois, ex-banker, held his slightly crazy bet by delivering this Thursday, June 30, the 365th portrait: Marie Rose Tessier, 112 years old). This would confirm her to be living as of June 30th. The article does not contain Tessier's full birthdate; as such, we can use this Ouest-France article from 2019 to verify that. Klavdiya Gadyuchkina

Klavdiya Gadyuchkina (nee Krotova) has the confirmed date of birth according to parish register - 5 December 1910 (new style)[1]. She is 111 now, still in the list of top-50. 89.179.106.54 (talk) 20:01, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

When Russia moved from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar in 1918, she may have been confused what her new Birth date was. I have moved her from pos 25 to pos 44. Rklingmann (talk) 19:13, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

"Brañas" vs. "Branyas"

This seems to be a particular issue in English-language Wikipedia, but every linked source uses "Branyas," not "Brañas." The GRG, Spanish-language Wikipedia and Spanish-language news articles all use "Branyas," while "Brañas" seems to be a well-intentioned, but incorrect hypercorrection. I propose switching all the spellings to "Branyas," unless someone here can provide a better source to support the use of "Brañas." Damiel (talk) 16:03, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

The name should always be that used in the source, no matter what some editor's opinion may be. Any alternative spelling must have a source of equal reliability, in which case both spellings should be included. At present there is only one source so Branyas should be used in all relevant lists. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 20:56, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I agree with this reasoning. As a long time reader more so than contributor, I wanted to get consensus here before making the relevant changes, anticipating revert wars. Damiel (talk) 22:02, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
I agree, and for consistency, her name needs to be changed here too. Regards, MattSucci (talk) 11:17, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing that out. It turns out she was in all four of the "oldest people" pages here, plus the "List of Spanish supercentarians" page, so I made the changes accordingly. Damiel (talk) 17:57, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
Missed one earlier, but now also corrected on "List of supercentenarians by continent." Damiel (talk) 03:56, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Ever heard of the ñ? Also this source gives Brañas. 11:11, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
As a matter of fact, I've studied several foreign languages, including Spanish, so I understand why it seemingly *should* be "Brañas" based on phonetics. However, Spanish-language Wikipedia uses "Branyas", and so does the source cited there from the Spanish-language newspaper "El Mundo". I would understand if there was a spelling divide between Spanish and English (where I'd likely side with Spanish), but there doesn't appear to be one in this case. We have to go with the spelling that the credible sources cited use. Damiel (talk) 16:08, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
I don+t know if it is related to this case but it looks like Branyas is a Catalan spelling, where "ny" is equivalent to the Castilian "ñ". Teixant (talk) 17:48, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Seliman Bandang

The source for Seliman Bandang seems to be 1 year old and I could not find a more recent reliable source.93.99.12.254 (talk) 10:49, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

I did find this source from 1 March 2022, which says: The Malaysian Book of Records currently officially recognises ... Seliman Bandang from Sarawak ... as the oldest living man at the age of 111. However, the source's reliability is questionable, given that it alleges Malaysia "broke the world record for oldest living person" with a 122-year-old, and admits that as far as legitimacy goes, it is definitely (read: only, exclusively) official in the town of Paloh, Johor. This claim is based on Malaysian voting records, which we cannot be sure extend back far enough to verify her claimed birthdate of 31 December 1900 (evidently, the article even incorrectly claims her age is 122 when, even if it were true, would be 121 at the time of this publication). These voting records are also presumably the basis for Seliman Bandang's claim, who is said to have entered Malaysia's Book of Records but is suspiciously nowhere to be found on their website, even on a page that contains Malaysia's "oldest woman" (another longevity claim at 119 years old). All considered, I don't think the March 2022 source is reliable as it advocates a claim approaching Calment status as possibly legitimate, nor is the Malaysian Book of Records a reliable source (at least for valid longevity claims). He should be removed, in my opinion, but I'd like input from other contributors first. Softmist (talk) 18:45, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Given that the original source takes its evidence for his age from the Malaysian Book of Records, and that does not seem to be a reliable source for oldest people, then he should be removed from all lists as he does not have a RS for his age. If anyone wants to justify the MBoR as a reliable source they can try and get it approved at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 21:54, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Agreed. I have removed him from all relevant lists. Softmist (talk) 22:37, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Japanese supercentenarians

There are many updates to be performed regarding Japanese supercentenarians, as the prefectural reports on oldest residents are all coming out now. Too much has changed to explain in one edit summary, so I will summarize everything here for convenience before implementing these updates into the table.

  • Saitama's oldest person is Hisako Shiroishi, born on 19 May 1910 (source). She will be added to the list.
  • Mitsuno Sato was confirmed alive as of 1 September 2022 (source). Her source will be updated.
  • Nagano's oldest person is Miyao Mashima, born on 1 July 1910 (source). She will be added to the list.
  • Kagawa's oldest person is a 110-year-old anonymous woman (source), so Masami Ueno is in limbo. She will be removed from the list.
  • Shina Seki was confirmed alive as of 16 September 2022 (source). Her source will be updated.
  • Niigata's oldest person is Kikuyo Honma, born on 1 November 1910 (source). She will be added to the list.
  • Okagi Hayashi was confirmed alive as of 15 September 2022 (source). Her source will be updated.
  • Shinobu Hayashi was confirmed alive as of 17 September 2022 (source). Her source will be updated.

Subject: Request to Add Information on Swami Sivananda to the Wikipedia Page on Oldest Living People

Dear Wikipedia Editors,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention the remarkable life and achievements of Swami Sivananda, a 125-year-old yoga guru from Kashi, who recently received the prestigious Padma Shri award, acknowledging his extensive contributions to the field of yoga and community service. Given the significance of his age and accomplishments, I believe his profile would be an invaluable addition to your page dedicated to the oldest living people.

Swami Sivananda was born on August 8, 1896, in the Sylhet district, now part of Bangladesh. Despite the early loss of his parents and a childhood marked by poverty, he pursued a spiritual path from a young age. Over the years, his unwavering commitment to yoga and his selfless dedication to serving those in need, especially leprosy-affected individuals in Puri, have garnered him widespread respect and admiration.

His life, underscored by a philosophy of love, service, and spiritual practice, embodies profound teachings and inspirational values. The acknowledgment of his contributions through the Padma Shri award at the age of 125 not only celebrates his personal achievements but also highlights his significant impact on society and the field of yoga.

Given the exceptional nature of Swami Sivananda's journey and achievements, incorporating his information into the Wikipedia page on the oldest living people would enrich the content, offering readers insight into a life characterized by remarkable longevity, spiritual dedication, and altruistic service.

Thank you for considering this request. I look forward to the potential inclusion of Swami Sivananda's profile on your esteemed platform, ensuring his extraordinary legacy is acknowledged and shared with a global audience.

Yours sincerely,
