Tornadoes are violently rotating columns of air that are in contact with the Earth and either a cumulonimbus or a cumulus cloud. Tornadoes are often referred to as twisters, whirlwinds, or cyclones. While most tornadoes attain winds of less than 110 miles per hour (180 km/h), are about 250 feet (80 m) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers), the wind speeds in the most intense tornadoes can reach 300 miles per hour (480 km/h), are more than two miles (3 km) in diameter, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 km). Various types of tornadoes include the multiple vortex tornado, landspout, and waterspout. Other tornado-like phenomena that exist in nature include the gustnado, dust devil, fire whirl, and steam devil. Most tornadoes occur in North America (in the United States and Canada), concentrated in a region nicknamed the Tornado Alley. Tornadoes also occur in South America, South Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
The 1899 New Richmond tornado was an estimated F5 tornado which formed in the early evening of Monday, June 12, 1899, and tore a 45-mile path of destruction through St. Croix, Polk, and Barron counties in west-central Wisconsin. It killed 117 people, injured over twice as many, and left hundreds homeless. The worst devastation occurred in the city of New Richmond, which took a direct hit from the storm. Over half of the town was left in ruins due to the tornado, which also caused minor damage to surrounding communities. The damage was reported to be over $300,000 (USD) ($10,987,000 in 2023). As of 2019, it is ranked as the ninth deadliest tornado in United States history, as well as the deadliest ever recorded in Wisconsin. (Full article...)

Canada's only confirmed F5 tornado occurred in Elie, Manitoba on June 22, 2007

This is a list of notable tornadoes, tornado outbreaks, and tornado outbreak sequences that have occurred in Canada in the 21st century. (2001 through 2100). Due to increasing detection, particularly in the US and southern Canada, numbers of counted tornadoes have increased markedly in recent decades although number of actual tornadoes and counted significant tornadoes has not. In older events, the number of tornadoes officially counted is likely underestimated.

On average, there are around 80 confirmed and unconfirmed tornadoes that touch down in Canada each year, with most occurring in the southern Canadian Prairies, Southern Ontario and southern Quebec. Canada ranks as the second country in the world with the most tornadoes per year, after the US. The most common types are F0 to F2 in damage intensity level and usually result in minor structural damage to barns, wood fences, roof shingles, chimneys, uprooted or snapped tree limbs and downed power lines. Fewer than 5% of tornadoes in Canada are rated F3 or higher in intensity, where wind speeds are in excess of 225 km/h (140 mph). Prior to April 1, 2013, Canada used a slightly modified Fujita scale, and as of that date the Enhanced Fujita scale, again slightly modified, was put into use to rate tornado intensity, based on the damage to buildings and vegetation.   • 1942 – An F4 tornado destroyed about a third of Pryor, Oklahoma, killing 52 people. Many of the homes destroyed had been hastily built during the town's wartime expansion.
  • 2011 – The peak of the 2011 Super Outbreak saw 216 tornadoes produced in 24 hours across the Southeastern United States. Four EF5s and eleven EF4s were among the tornadoes that devastated parts of Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia. The death toll on April 27 was 319. For the entire outbreak, 360 tornadoes occurred over four days, resulting in 324 fatalities.

  • 1893 – An F4 tornado severely damaged or destroyed every building in Cisco, Texas, killing at least 23 people. Half of the town's population was left with no shelter of any kind and 43 of the 45 businesses in town were destroyed. An entire train was thrown 80–200 feet (24–61 m) from the tracks.
  • 1950 – Strong tornadoes killed 11 people in Oklahoma and Texas. Five died as an F4 tornado swept away two homes near Clyde, Texas. A refrigerator was carried half a mile (0.8 km) and stuck on top of a telephone pole. Another F4 tornado killed five people as it devastated Holdenville, Oklahoma. One other person died near Lone Wolf, Oklahoma.
  • 2002 – Part of a larger outbreak, a rare F4 tornado hit La Plata, Maryland, killing three people and inuring more than 100. The tornado was initially rated F5, but it was downgraded after the swept-away houses were found to have been very poorly anchored. A report on this tornado led to the creation of a "Quick Response Team" for assessing damage from potential F4 and F5 tornadoes.

The California Closets Warehouse that was severely damaged by the tornado

The 2006 Westchester County tornado was the strongest and largest tornado in Westchester County, New York since the 1904 Chappaqua tornado. It touched down there on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, and traveled 13 miles (21 km) into southwestern Connecticut during a 33-minute span through two states. The tornado touched down at 3:30 p.m. EDT (19:30 UTC) on the shore of the Hudson River before becoming a waterspout and traveling 3 mi (5 km) across the river. Coming ashore, the tornado entered Westchester County and struck the town of Sleepy Hollow at F1 intensity. After passing through the town, it intensified into an F2 tornado and grew to almost a one-quarter mile (400 m) in diameter. The tornado continued through the county, damaging numerous structures, until it crossed into Connecticut at 4:01 p.m. EDT (20:01 UTC). Not long after entering the state, it dissipated in the town of Greenwich at 4:03 p.m. EDT (20:03 UTC). When the tornado entered Westchester County, it was the eighth known tornado to either touch down or enter the county since 1950.

Two barns and a warehouse were destroyed, and a large stained-glass window was shattered. Numerous homes and businesses were damaged and thousands of trees were uprooted. There were no fatalities and only six minor injuries were associated with the storm. The cost of damages was estimated at $12.1 million. (Full article...)
