Nintendo Switch Lite: Why it's ninth generation edit

I believe that the Nintendo Switch Lite is a ninth generation console due to being significantly different from the Nintendo 3DS, which dominated the eighth generation for handhelds, and the PlayStation Vita, the final handheld from Sony. Sony and Microsoft have declined to release a direct competitor to the Nintendo Switch Lite, though cloud services such as Apple Arcade and Google Stadia may challenge Nintendo's effective monopoly on the handheld market. While the original Switch is part of the eighth generation, the Switch Lite has enough differences to be considered a ninth generation console, as its game support and intended use is for handheld only. --LABcrabs (talk) 06:39, 13 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

The Switch Lite is the Switch. It's not a different generation from the Switch because it is 99% the same hardware and support. It must stay with the Switch in the eighth generation. If that means we don't have any portables in the ninth, so be it. --Masem (t) 06:56, 13 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Seconded. It’s...just a repurposed Switch. And I don’t particularly see sources calling it 9th gen either... Sergecross73 msg me 14:45, 13 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Note that Apple Arcade is not a streaming service, rather a subscription service comparable to the Xbox Games Pass. Lordtobi () 14:46, 19 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Draft status / mainspacing edit

This article needs carefully handling due to past issues of Wikipedia citogensis and generational definitions. The sourcing needs to become much stronger than simply off the back of two product announcements that have not hit production yet or been released. WP:VG should discuss it before salting is removed and the article leaves draft. -- ferret (talk) 12:48, 16 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Why should Stadia be here? edit

Stadia is a cloud gaming platform, not a console. This page generally focuses on consoles of said generation, while Stadia will compete with the PS5 and Xbox 4, it isn’t a real console, resulting in me questioning its inclusion. ShadowCyclone talk 22:16, 19 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Notable sources claiming ninth generation edit

Here are the sources:

There are also many headlines about these consoles selling out, and being sold for much higher prices than retail. I hope this article is approved so that it can be improved. --LABcrabs (talk) 03:41, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

AFC reviewers and the nom are encouraged to review (and participate) in Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games#The_dreaded_9th_Gen_discussion... before this draft is moved anywhere. -- ferret (talk) 03:43, 8 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
