JSON.parse error in Opera 10.50

edit

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Enable the multimedia beta gadget
  2. Edit any page and click media wizard button
  3. A "popup" (looks like jQuery UI) will be shown
  4. Press "Upload file"
  5. See progress spinner under "Your recent uploads to Wikimedia Commons"
  6. Nothing happens, obviously broken.
  7. In Opera's error log, find:
JavaScript - http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php/MediaWiki:ApiProxy?withJS=MediaWiki:MwEmbed.js
Uncaught exception: SyntaxError: JSON.parse: Unable to parse value: object

Debugging in Opera Dragonfly reveals that what is passed to JSON.parse isn't a string, but an object. It looks very much like an object created by parsing JSON like this: {query:{userinfo:{id:9412,name:"Foolip"}}} (I wrote this by hand, can't copy the structure from dragonfly). Data parsed twice by accident?

Using Opera 10.10 ( 10.50 not yet available for linux ) I can't recreate the "not showing my recent uploads" ( it does show them for me ). I notice your urid is 110 we are on 111 so you may have to "clear your cache" and try again? The uploading on the other hand seems to not to work. I get "Statement on line 72: Cannot convert undefined or null to Object" but it does not point me to where / which script is causing that problem (ie what line 72 in what file? ). mdale (talk) 20:16, 17 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

"Your recent uploads to Wikimedia Commons" does not load any list (firefox nightly and safari)

edit

I am trying to include an [already uploaded video] to the Ostrich page using the add video interface, however when the Add Media Wizzard opens, I click "Upload" and the list of my wikimedia commons contributions doesnt load, the spinning goes forever.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Enable the multimedia beta gadget
  2. Edit any page and click media wizard button
  3. Click on the Upload Button
  4. Wait to see your wikimedia commons uploads to show up.

Expected behavior: A list appears after some time. Actual behavior: The spinner keeps going on and on.

I have checked both Firebug "net" tab and safari "activity window. Doesnt look like the page is loading anything or waiting for some kind of response, whatever request that should trigger the replacement of the spinner must have arrived already, something is broken.

Fczuardi, have you tried clearing your browser cache completely ( not a shift reload but going into the preferences and clearing cache) Since the request is to commons a shift reload only clears for the current domain. Portuguese Wikipedia / Beta template

edit

Hi, I have two questions:

  1. Will we have this button for adding media wizzard (  ) on Portuguese and other languages Wikipedia?
  2. Are there plans to add this button to the enhanced toolbar of the new template Wikipedia is testing? I'm using the new template in both Portuguese and English Wikipedias and I took sometime to realise the button didn't appear, as explained here, because the template I was using. Maybe it's a good idea to inform this for people who are using the beta testing template (I will try to contact OVA Brasil and ask them for improve the Portuguese version).

Simpler workflow

edit

Someone might like to mention on the Project page that if editors use Clesh instead of the already-mentioned iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, they can export videos directly into Ogg format ready for upload into Wikipedia. This simplifies the process somewhat. Clesh runs in a browser, and so works on most Macs, PCs (and many Linux machines) without installation. Stephen B Streater (talk) 19:57, 5 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Lights Camera Wiki/Wildlife and Earth Touch

edit

Why do the example movies have earth-touch.com logos on them? I thought Wiki didn't endorse other websites like that. This is supposed to be free content, nobody wants to use something with another website's logo on it. Not that I've got anything against Earth-touch.com, they do some excellent work, but Wikipedia shouldn't be advertising for them. --Calibas (talk) 06:19, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I agree. What's this about? —innotata 14:25, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I left some questions for User:Totallynuts and invited him to discuss here. He's the one that added the Earth Touch stuff to the site. --Calibas (talk) 17:11, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

More on Earth Touch: The content there is not under an open license "you acquire no rights other than the right to download materials for personal, non-commercial use, and you undertake not to use materials in any other way", and it's sold commercially "we survive by selling our content through traditional media channels like television". I'm not sure exactly what Wikipedia has to gain from this partnership. I'm emailing Earth Touch about this. --Calibas (talk) 17:23, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Clarification about Earth Touch: The example movie with the logo was just that, an example movie created before we had proper access to the plain video files. The videos that have been used in actual articles as at Hippopotamus (see also Commons:Category:Images from Earth-Touch), are without the logo and have been specifically put under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 License.--Pharos (talk) 17:35, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

From LCW

edit

What's the difference between a video "from Lights Camera Wiki", and one not from the project? Is it that the LCW ones are uploaded directly to en, while ordinary ones are uploaded to Commons? If so, how can LCW be good? Jim.henderson (talk) 10:25, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

There isn't any sharp difference between LCW videos and non-LCW videos; "Lights Camera Wiki" is really just an initiative to encourage video contributions in general, and does this through providing tutorials, background materials, and illustrative examples of subjects in which work can be helpfully contributed. Of course these videos should be uploaded as other media, to Wikimedia Commons rather than just to English Wikipedia.--Pharos (talk) 01:06, 29 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I should have read more and thought more before writing. By coincidence, yesterday I put a small video into Trikke, for which neither a true video camera nor a tripod was available (on my way home from photographing the Hudson River Museum I spotted an opportunity that called for motion). I didn't edit it or replace the sound track with a narration, not having studied the tools for that. I didn't say it was "From LCW" because that wouldn't mean anything. So yes, there should be pages with elementary technical advice for budding videographers as well as still photographers, sound recordists, digital painters, etc with links to more advanced or detailed external sites, but I don't see much reason to credit the school or book or Wikiproject that led us to understand how to make a good picture. Wikinews

edit

I have removed the part about English Wikinews. The closure vote could only have happened if, as a project, were completely inactive. This is patently not the case. The line also suggests that we were consulted for this, and there was zero community consultation. I would welcome this project's organisers coming to Wikinews, having discussions with our community about how the work being done by it could assist us in our project's goals. When can we expect this? There are some video things we would really love to have, along with other mobile reporting tools for things like live interviews, transcribing video and audio, producing news reports in video format. This would need to be coupled with improving our reviewing tools to make it easier to get reviews done. Wikinews is a bit more open than say English Wikipedia in that our fair use policy is more liberal and we can and do allow local uploads of CC-BY-NC for news articles. --LauraHale (talk) 02:04, 15 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Request for comment on Commons: Should Wikimedia support MP4 video?

edit

The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team seeks community guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. This digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC.

Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora).

However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required.

We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not to support MP4. Our Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members.

Please join this RfC -- and share your advice.

All users are welcome to participate, whether you are active on Commons, Wikipedia, other Wikimedia project -- or any site that uses content from our free media repository.

We look forward to a constructive discussion with you, so we can make a more informed decision together on this important topic. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:04, 22 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Citations to videos

edit

Hello. I thought someone in this project may want to put on the project agenda a goal of establishing best practices for citing videos. Right now, when videos are cited they typically just use citation formats for any kind of media, but I thought that it might be a good idea to have explicit guidelines or even some kind of tool or template note which gives a machine-readable indication of where and how video citations are used. With Template:PDFlink there is a precedent for tagging pdf links as such, because the expectation is that users would want to be informed in advance before following a PDF link. I think the same should eventually be done for sources which have to be checked by playing a video.

The current specialized video citation template is Template:Cite AV media, but I think that someday all citation templates should note if they go to video. Another related cause might be Wikipedia:WikiProject Open Access/Signalling OA-ness, which seeks to standardize practices for citing sources which are either behind paywalls or which are free (CC-By) for remixing. To the extent that anyone in video may want to align practices with open access signalling practices, I may be willing to work with people here on this. Let everyone see

edit

Maybe I can eventually figure out why I can't make the videos on this project page move. I get a box saying it's blocked by my "security settings" but doesn't hint which setting or how to find it. Anyway there must be millions who can only see Wikivideos after they figure this stuff out. Wouldn't it be a good idea for video makers who want their materials to be seen, to send a copy to Youtube and insert a link in the Wikipedia article? Then we millions can see, even if we don't work out the puzzle. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:38, 13 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Help with a new user?

edit

Hi! I'm not as overly familiar with media uploading on Wikipedia in general as my experience is pretty much limited to images and even then my knowledge is mostly about images along the lines of official logos, book covers, and movie posters. I have a new user (User:Fengxiaolu) on my page that is interested in creating an article and uploading her own media to Wikipedia and to Wikimedia Commons in general. She has asked about uploading her own movies and I have to admit that I don't really know anything about that. There's an ongoing communication on my talk page, so I have no big problem with anyone wanting to continue the discussion there- especially since I could definitely benefit from it as a whole. (User_talk:Tokyogirl79#HiFiMan) I've pinged her in this note so just in case there are any comments here, Fengxiaolu will be able to see them as well. Help with medical videos and captioning

edit

Fuzheado was referred by Bluerasberry, hoping to find some help with using captioning on a medical video. I've created a video as an introduction to new medical editors. We'd been asked to add captioning for accessability. I added in the captions, and they work well on the some pages but not others. For instance, on this page it doesn't work but on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine page it does. Any ideas what is happening? Server sync thing or have I done something wrong with adding the captions? Another video, without captioning can be found at Impacted wisdom teeth Thanks for any help. Mobile

edit

It seems like Wikipedia's support for video on mobile isn't too good -- on my Android phone, trying to play an .ogv video only plays the audio stream, and playing a .webm video always plays the highest resolution version, meaning even if there's a lower resolution version available it'll be choppy on my phone. Is there a way for me to help with fixing this? Subverdor (talk) 04:23, 28 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

That seems tragically accurate. On my iOS 7 device, I go to here and the video thumbnail images have no "play" arrow. They have a "play media" caption. I tap that, and it opens a new tab for no reason, which is totally blank. Even the URL bar is blank! — Smuckola (Email) (Talk) 06:58, 28 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
And in the months I've had it, I have found no way to show them on my Dell XPS-10 with Windows 8.1 RT. There is a Wikipedia app, but even with that it shows only a static image. Is someone deliberately arranging things so as to sabotage the mobile presentation of Wikivideo? Jim.henderson (talk) 12:35, 31 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
These problems are software related issues and should be discussed with the developers. You may have a look at https://ogvjs-testing.wmflabs.org/wiki/Demo to see what's going on in the "smart area". And please notice the related discussion page... --Pristurus (talk) 21:43, 31 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, but that page doesn't show that someone is trying to fix Wikipedia's software so it will be compatible soon. Many other Web sites have no problem showing short video clips to just about all smartphones and tablets, even if they haven't downloaded special mobile software. Seems to me the problem should have been solved here ages ago or at least a work around should be arranged. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:33, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Well, I am a normal user and not involved in software development. But looking to the recent multimedia mailing list let me be a little bit hopeful. Please notice most of other web sources use the mp4 formate for playing videos. But we have decided to use free formates only. And this decision results in a lot of work for our multimedia (software) team, mp4 is native supported by the (phone/tablet) hardware and our formates must be decoded by software only. Regards, --Pristurus (talk) 19:42, 3 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I've been letting my impatience spill into irritation. The decision to pioneer new technology instead of working the same way as other websites seems awfully thoughtless, apparently made by vote of a couple hundred techies who more easily see the fun in undertaking a technological challenge than the delay and inconvenience to others. The Wikicomplex has many virtues and powers but the neat and timely integration of complex and innovative software is not, alas, prominent among them. And the talk page of that WMFLABS demo doesn't allow me to comment without getting an account there, presumably to avoid wasting time on outsiders uninterested in making a commitment in this field. Thus, the small video successes of such articles as glossary of ballet terms won't much be expanded until the pioneering work is ready for prime time, one of these years. Wikipedia Documentaries? Suggestion

edit

Hi there! So I was reading through this project and saw that it was largely focused on creating video files of relatively static, and single subjects. While I understand that this is necessary, would there be any interest to put together so called "documentaries" on different Wikipedia subjects? Like some of the more important articles, like Science, or different countries' pages could have a 2 to 3 minute summary of the info (since some people find it easier to watch a video or other reasons). Only a handful of people would need to work on this, like someone to write a script, someone to narrate it, someone to find/record videos relating to the subject/script, and someone to edit it all together. I'd be willing to help. I'm just throwing out an idea, what does anyone else think? dominiktesla -talk- 01:05, 30 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Drone and aerial footage

edit

Would this be the most appropriate project to take on the task of finding or promoting the creation of drone and aerial footage? Drones are becoming more and more popular. Even though some people find them nuisances, if drone enthusiasts are going to fly crafts for the purpose of taking aerial photographs and videos, we might as well encourage them to upload to Wikipedia/Commons. Yes? No? Thoughts? ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:04, 13 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Another Believer: Hi. What does drone footage, or any other particular kind of camera mount, specifically have to do with Wikipedia, and why does it require highlighting or promotion? — Smuckola(talk) 15:09, 13 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
For the same reasons we upload images and videos taken by standard cameras. If I had a drone with photography/video capabilities, I would be inclined to take aerial footage of buildings, parks, geographic features, bridges, architecture, events, etc., just like I do with a regular camera. But drones provide a unique perspective. These images/videos be educational, and some may even be more intriguing or powerful than those taken from a common ground-level view. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:22, 13 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
I do most my Wikiphotography from a bicycle. It's a splendid way to combine three hobbies to the advantage of each. Sometimes aerial photographs are more useful than mine, and sometimes less. I don't see a reason for geographical or other topical Wikiprojects to encourage any one method or platform over others. All are good, when they help people understand without making a nuisance. Dear all

I'm happy to say that I have just uploaded over 7 hours (426 minutes) of video from a UNESCO DVD set ICT4ID to Commons here. Additonally we have made available 26 videos of news footage available here. The files uploaded in webm format in sections ranging from 10 minutes to 1 hour, I can see lots of small clips that could be made from the videos.

When reusing the content please could you use the following as the source, this will keep the files categorised allowing us to track of reuse of the contact (it adds the file to a category) and the end user will be able to see where the file came from.
