Handbook of Texas online template

Original of this posting is on Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)

Please be advised that Template:Handbook of Texas may need to be revised shortly, due to a new TSHA website going online TSHA. I noticed today they were "testing" and links were re-directed to a new Texas State Historical Association page, but only pointed the user to an additional link to click. It did not automatically roll over to the correct page. As of this posting, it's temporarily back the way it's always been.

As of this posting, the new TSHA website is up and running. They suggest users re-bookmark. If you look at the address bar in how it changed, it's like this Re-direct page to this New link. I'm not sure if there is a quick template fix on this, as how it changed is the right-hand end of the address line. But it will affect all Wikipedia articles that have used this template. And possibly affect any new articles using the template.

Unless you want to, they don't. Some of the US related projects are starting to team up (because many of us have become inactive or the users have moved on) and work together so I offered a general invite thinking that others would as well. My original thought was that rather than have 200 different banners on article talk pages it would be better to add some of the projects to that and have just one. Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Texas

Zion Lutheran Church (Fredericksburg, Texas) was part of Fredericksburg, Texas, but the content as it then existed on that page, took up almost the entirety of what was then "Fredericksburg in Religion". Because of the historic significance of the church, I felt it needed its own page. The wording was unchanged when I moved it over, and is not text of mine. Possibly, the text was lifted verbatim from a church brochure. I would encourage any interested editors who can re-work the text and provide verifiable sourcing to do so. It's the oldest Lutheran church in the Texas Hill Country, and one of the oldest in the state of Texas, built in 1852. Built out of hand-hewed wood and native limestone rock. It was designated a Recorded Texas Landmark in 1964. Maile66 (talk) 01:25, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Don't Mess with Texas

Are you working from the "De-stub" list on the WikiProject Texas page? That list has been out of date for a long time. It's not picking up the stubs from any kind of template. Somebody just manually input the tasks. Looks like nobody has done a regular clean-up of that list since 2008. I had removed some out-of-date items during the summer, and I just removed Don't Mess With Texas from the de-stub list there. • Do you have your preferences set to show the assessment (Stub, etc.) at the top of the page? It's in your Preferences, under Gadgets. I think under User interface Gadgets, there's a box to check to display assessments. That's a big help for you. Then you know right off when you pull up the page if it's a stub or not.
• There's probably a lot on that list that really are stubs. If you click the "more" thing there, it takes you to another page. There's at least a couple of hundred stubs.
• Not everything labeled a stub should still be a stub. Editors add things, and nobody edits the article's Talk page and reassesses it.
• Do you know about this page Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment? This tells you the qualifications for the various assessments. You can look at the various stub articles and decide if they should be reassessed on the Talk page.

Llano, Texas

Llano, Texas needs a total re-write, and I don't readily find enough online to do it myself. The History section has been lifted verbatim from the Handbook of Texas online. Much of the rest of it also seems to be a verbatim lift from other places. i.e., the section on Badu House seems to have been lifted from the commercial home page of the Badu House. Collaboration with the Wine Project on Texas wine articles?

Hello! For 2011 the Wine Project is doing a new Wine Improvement Drive where each month we focus on an area of articles that relate to a particular theme. In January, we are are ringing in the New Year with New World wine, with a focus on the wines of the Northern Hemisphere-Canadian wine, American wine and Mexican wine. I am going by related projects to see if there is any interest in collaboration between this project and the wine project on the subject of Texas wine
Some suggestion on potential article creations include History of Texas wine and expanding of important Texas related stubs such as Bell Mountain AVA, Escondido Valley AVA, Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country AVA, Mesilla Valley AVA, Texas Davis Mountains AVA, Texas Hill Country AVA and Texoma AVA. Another idea would be creating articles on notable wineries such as Becker Vineyards, Flat Creek Estate and McPherson Cellars. On a smaller scale, there are Texas wine related articles that could use some help with clean up tags such as Llano Estacado Winery and Black Spanish (grape). And, of course, of HUGE help would be the upload of free use photos of Texas wineries, wines and wine regions to Commons that could be used to better illustrate Texas wine articles. If anyone feels up to a challenge

The Mason County War was set up 2-1/2 years ago by an unregistered editor with unknown sources. Possibly lifted verbatim from elsewhere. Possibly somebody just deciding to tell the story in their own words after having read something. It's not well done. The whole section of "Background" really is not relevant to the war itself. The content, while having some validity, is often questionable. Not much has been done with it since.

In a nutshell, the Mason County War (or Hoo Doo War) in Texas was about cattle rustling, vigilante mobs and questionable law enforcement. It is sometimes portrayed as a racial war against the German population, but that is misleading as non-Germans were also victims. The usual names that surface in this are not German.

I started out to try and add some sourcing about the burning of the courthouse, which happened a year after the war ended - but which the writer would have us believe was "an obvious case of arson" and tied to the war.

As I read the article, I realized it needs a complete re-write. Something I am not able to devote time to at present, but the project is worthy.

This is not something that should be repaired patchwork, a source here, a source there. It needs to be taken apart and re-worked. And because this is one of those history areas where different sources will present a different slant, the sourcing needs to be cross-checked. Maile66 (talk) 14:54, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Maybe not. According to the 1891 Bexar County Directory R. J. Hofheinz was a few blocks up the street (assuming street numbering is the same and it had not moved) at 471 N Flores. I also note that the shadows suggest that the camera is aimed toward the southwest or to the southeast (which should show the church, if this was the Military Plaza, would it not?)

I have tried, but failed, to find any Sanborn Fire Maps surrounding the Military Plaza (or Main Plaza) indicating the combination of a trolley line running before a hardware store, beside a saloon (assuming Texas Barrel House is one) and with a Loan office two buildings down.

Turtles of Texas

I am putting together a page on turtles of Texas in my sandbox. I intend to take it to Featured List. Just getting going now, but I have taken state reptiles to FL and painted turtle to FA. So have a little experience with turtles (though not a biologist) and with F content (although just two). I am not a Texas native, so want to make sure I cover this all properly. Colonial Governors of Texas

Hello people of WikiProject Texas!

I've worked a lot on wikipedia articles related with the history of the Americas, since that this is a topic that I´m interested. the case is I realized that, since a long time, all governors of Texas have articles on wikipedia since those state joined the United States, while only a few colonial governors of this state had them. I thought it would be nice to at least most of colonial governors of Texas also have articles on wikipedia, because they are a bit forgotten in this encyclopedia. I've already looked for information and I've edited articles the some of these governors and I ask that, if interested, you also collaborate on editing articles from other governors of this state. The names of the governors of New Mexico are on the lists List of Texas Governors and Presidents.

For anyone who has linked references to search results obtained at Texas Historic Sites Atlas, please note that they changed their URL somewhat. If you linked to a reference obtained by right-clicking and then "Open Link in a new window", the result of opening in a new window is where they changed the address. Rather than the Texas Historical Commission just redirecting links to the old address, it seems it will be up to the individual editor to go back and manually correct such links the editor may have inserted in any Wikipedia article. Texas museums

I have just done a re-working of List of museums in Texas, due to its size, and organized it into sub pages by area. Since the sub pages were merely a sorting out of what already existed on the main page, I have no way of verifying any individual listings. It's possible that some of these may have closed down, or that there are existing museums not listed. Most pages are filled with red links that have no corresponding Wikipedia page. Some areas have no photos at all available on Commons. East Texas is really needy in the way of images. I would like to invite any interested party to peruse the lists and make any valid edits necessary. Museums are such a great expression of any area's culture and history. I just wanted to drop a note that WikiProject University of Texas at Austin was recently marked as inactive. I recommend pulling it in as a task force of the Austin project but it doesn't seem very active either. WikiProject Texas page clean up

I am inviting interested parties to respond to this within a week, by January 17, 2012.

The main page WikiProject Texas has for a long time needed updating. This is sometimes the first page an interested participant sees, and we need to make it representative of the project's scope and participants. With that in mind, I find two areas are really needy:

• Open tasks - If we are going to list in this box, we need it updated. As is, it's years out of date. Otherwise, I'd rather not even see that Open Task box on the page. Why incorrectly list a page as needing work, when the work was already done? Confusing. Do we have any editors who would like to go in and clean that list?(this item is done as of Jan 12, 2012)
• Participants - My plan is to divide the list into two parts, similar to what other projects have. An Active list, and an Inactive list. No listed participant will be deleted. But any listed participant whose User Page contributions list shows they have not been active on WP for over 6 months, will be moved to the Inactive list. They can always move themselves back to Active. It's also possible to take a look at currently active editors to see if they've contributed anything to the project in the last year. If not, those also could be moved to Inactive. Feedback is welcome. I will begin work on the Participants list on January 12, 2012. (this item is done as of Jan 20, 2012)

Help Improve Texas Projects and Portals

This is an open invitation to anyone interested in helping to update the information on the various Texas projects and portals. The information is generally out-of-date, sometimes by years. Every little bit helps. Every small improvement adds to the larger whole. Together, we can get the Texas pages to look current and helpful to visitors.

These two Category links will take you to the various pages:

• Category:Texas portals
• Category:WikiProject Texas

Anyone interested in improving the basic look and structure, could open a WP:RfC. Dialogue is good for the project.

These are areas I see could be improved, in addition to miscellaneous information on the portal and project pages:

• Participant lists could be divided in to two separate lists: Active, and Inactive participants
• Task lists that require monitoring, can be somewhat automated by replacing the individual topic items with category page links
• Eliminate duplication of efforts. Inter-connect the like sections in different pages to a singular template.

As an example, I already updated the Open Tasks on WikiProject Texas, and the Things You Can Do on the Texas portal. These are exactly the same information, but point to two different templates. In a perfect world, these two pages would point to the same template, but they don't - possibly due to page formatting. I updated the templates they point to, so at least the individual items will point to Wiki links that would, in essence, make the list items self-updating. But it would be better if both pointed to only one template.

Redesign of WikiProject Texas main page

Soliciting input by February 1, 2012.

Please have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject United States.

I propose adapting the Tabbed style of the WPUS page to the Texas project page. It's a much cleaner, neater look and easier to navigate. Input is welcome.

On a second item, I propose completely eliminating the Inactive Participants list. Anyone who wishes to re-add themselves to the Active list can do so at any time. In moving the inactive out of the active, I already eliminated editors who had been indefinitely blocked years ago, mostly sockpuppet accounts. There seems to be no reason to keep an inactive list at all. However, feedback on the issue is welcome.

Other than the members who are indefinately blocked, Sockpuppets or the like I would keep the ones that are just inactive. They have been known to come back after some time if they see something interesting. It also retains a bit of history for the project.

As for the tabbed style I would recommend the following: Main page, Members, Portal and Recognized content. This will be a good base and will help associate the project to the portal and you can always add additional tabs later if needed. --Kumioko (talk) 00:43, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

The Recognized Content over on WPUS is a beautiful piece of work. How did you come up with the data? I am not aware of a one-stop shopping list for something like all Featured Articles, or all DYK for any project. Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Texas

Someone recently suggested that this project may be inactive or semi-active and that it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there has been some attempts at getting discussions going by Maille66 with little response from others so it appears as though the project may need a little help.

Just to clarify the project page with members stay basically as they are with the members able to dictate how things happen, scope of the project, etc. Its not going to be absorbed or dissolved in any way and the scope won't change unless the members want it too. The only change would be that the WikiProject banner would be replaced with the WPUS banner with WikiProject Texas embedded within it. You can take a look at Category talk:Visitor attractions in South Carolina to see an example. Please don't look at this as a badge of shame for the project. But the project itself has little activity and I would like to try and change that. Partly through automation of messages and alerts but also in member activity. All the individual projects will function as they do and the WPUS project will perform certain tasks and the states do things also. All the projects use a standard group of parameters (Needs infobox, image, attention, geo coordinates, references, etc), and the banner allows for things like project to do lists, articles with to do lists and articles with comments. I have developed some bot tasks that automate the adding and removing of some of the parameter values like needs infobox, image, attention, etc. and those are beginnning to roll out now. This also allows the projects use the same article classes and importance.

How it will be supported can depend on what the members of the project want but typically WPUS is a bigger project with a lot more members and the more members we have collectively the better for all, it has a newsletter, a monthly collaboration, multiple bots that run actively through the articles for various things (as can be seen on the members page) with more being setup as we go along. This means that it will be seen by a lot of people in a lot of ways. We spent a lot of time concentrating on building up the project but with the new year we are going to be starting to do some drives to build up articles, create new ones, etc. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any questions or comments. --Kumioko (talk) 20:33, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

I was just perusing the WPUS newsletter found under that tab. Just from what I see there, being part of this would take the Texas project out of that stand-alone situation. With the Texas project page as silent as it has been, I see no advantage in being a stand-alone project. Maybe WPUS editors in other states might like to contribute to Texas if they read about it in that newsletter. Just to clarify I can tag it as US/TX or as Texas whichever the discussion determines. How I am determining it is a bit more complicated. I have some tools that let me pull in the titles of content, in this case, Articles, Categories, Templates, Files, Portal pages, Project pages and books that start with or end with Texas, , TX, , TX) or (Texas) so thats were I started. Then I pulled in all the Texas related projects articles (other than the State Texas project) then I add some of the larger Texas categories (People, Governent, Dallas Cowboys and a couple of others), then I compared that list to the articles already in the State project and the result are some of the articles relating to Texas that haven't been tagged. Of course it doesn't catch them all and I was very frugal with which categories I used so I don't accidentally pull in a bunch of stuff not related to texas that are poorly categorized but its a start. Technical question for Kumioko

If I understand what you said above, your bot also looks for Redirects.

Until quite recently, I didn't even know there was a category for Redirect-Class Texas Articles, nor did it occur to me that when I created a redirect I should brand it with the Texas project on the Talk page. I think I'm not alone in that lack of knowledge. An overwhelming number of my redirects have the word Texas in their naming. But there are a great many of them do not have Texas in their naming.

Question: Will your bot pick up that they are Texas redirects if the article they redirect to has the Texas Project assessment on its talk page? Maile66 (talk) 14:32, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

You don't really need to tag every redirect IMO but the rules of thumb that I typically use are: Do I want to be notified if someone sumbits it for deletion or does the title contain something directly linking it to the project. In this case the Words Texas or , TX (although you could also infer Dallas, Houston and other things in Texas as well). The redirects don't need to be tagged if the folks in the project like yourself don't want it to be but from a technical aspect if the article, redirect, etc does not have the projects banner on its talk page then ArticleAlertbot cannot notify the project if its submitted for deletion, merger, etc. It also makes it a bit harder to identify newly created articles that need to be tagged. To answer your second question, no it doesn't derive anything from the target of the redirect and in fact it won't pull the article the redirect points to for tagging the project either. There is a way I can do it but I have found that the margin of error is uncomfortably high. I have found that in many cases a redirect with something like Texas in it points to an article that is only tangentially related to the topic. Thats a good point but I don't think its a huge issue. There are already quite a few articles associated to various states such as WA, ID, UT and AZ that predate the US as well as some Revolutionary and American civil war topics that one could argue are not "part of the US". Additionally, a few articles predating colonial america are tagged as well as being of importance such as Christopher Columbus. I wouldn't advocate going back to prehistoric times but since the article will still be associated to Tx I don't think its a huge issue. --Kumioko (talk) 16:21, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Hi I am a member of this project, I am okay with it. Since you added to the supported projects, how about Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and the Texas WikiProjects to be supported into the banner, but not Texas State Highways. Should it be okay as well? JJ98 (talk) 03:32, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

I don't have a problem with it but I don't know what the activity level of those projects are. We probably should leave a note on the projects talk pages before making an assumption. As a casual member of the D/FW area project, I'd appreciate it if you would not suborn the project by removing the the WP:Texas banner and replacing it with the WPUS project banner. If there are legitimate concerns about the page, bring them up on the project's talk page. The previous open invitation to Maile66 on the talk page to come participate in the Texas page didn't really have a call to action other than "Come participate". Hello Hasteur. I would like to add some clarification. The notice on the DFW page was a courtesy. Kumioko only got involved because of contact from me regarding the main Texas project. You can go over to Kumioko's talk page and see that. Kumioko's first response was to offer suggestions, but nudge me to take care of it in whatever way I might try. And the end result of my efforts was dead silence (as usual) from anyone who saw the notices. The suggestion to include the DFW project, as you can see above, came from someone other than Kumioko. In response to that request, Kumioko suggested putting a notice on the DFW talk page. Not having been a part of the DFW project, I don't know its activity level. But I do know for the last couple of years the Texas project itself has been wanting in activity. Whatever participant structure had been there before, is now absent. Kumioko is not trying to do anything but respond to my requests to help the Texas project. While I respect your viewpoint, please respect my efforts to try to revive the Texas project. Well frankly, speaking for this project only and after monitoring this projects talk page for some time, questoins frequently went unanswered until recently when Maille started taking an interest in the project so leaving a message would be rather futile. IRT my participation here, If you bothered to read the discussion above, which it appears you did not, I am merely trying to assist in determining if there is interest and providing options of how to best to improve a project that seems to be rather dead. Yes, there are many editors working no Texas related articles, but the project itself is largely inactive. As I said above, and as I have said many times before in these discussions I am ok either way with supported the project or not and I will help how and when I can. As for the DFW project, if they want to be seperate thats completely and totally fine. Thats why I asked that a message be left on all the projects pages when the question about them came up and excuse me for being a bit blunt here but if you don't like how things are going then step up and help out with the project. I've been watching this project along with the Austin and DFW projects for two years now. None of these projects is particularly active, so I support consolidating some project functions like the assessment banners with WPUS. As someone who lived in Texas, I can see why you might get some members from these projects who would prefer to keep the Texas projects independent. It has not yet been fully implemented and I can remove it if needed. Two that really stand out for me, because of their national significance, are related: Brooke Army Medical Center and Fort Sam Houston, and, of course, the ugly tags that have been there for years. For all the tagging, there was never even any discussion on their Talk pages. Next step

I just wanted to give an update as of today.

1. The code for WikiProject United States template was implemented and the Texas projects identified above were added.
2. I also added these projects to the documentation of the template and to the Supported projects list of WPUS.
3. I deprecated the WikiProject templates for the 3 education related WikiProjects that were marked as inactive projects currently. What this does is essentially trick the template into displaying the WPUS template with the TX and Educational banner insead of the applicable WikiProject banner for any articles they exist on as well as WikiProject Texas until we can migrate them over completely. An example can be seen here. This also adds the related articles to the Category:United States articles with deprecated tags category. The three affected templates so far are:
   1. Template:WikiProject Texas A&M
   2. Template:WikiProject University of North Texas
   3. Template:WikiProject University of Texas at Austin

Before I do the rest I wanted to give folks a chance to comment. As with my earlier comments above. This can all be easily undone if the mood changes. Deadline for full implementation

When I first started this thread, I gave a deadline of February 1 for feedback. That date has come and gone. But let's wait a few more days in case some interested editors haven't had a chance to read all this. NEW DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 10. On February 11, Kumioko can go ahead with the full WPUS affiliation, omitting Houston for the moment, and DFW only as suggested by Hasteur.

Speak up now if you want to be heard on this issue.

As far as I know I didn't touch the houston or Dallas-Fort Worth projects. Of course there are a lot of articles with both the houston and TX banners on it and I did replace the Texas ones, I left the houston ones alone. But I did split List of museums in Houston, Texas and List of museums in Greater Houston metropolitan area, Texas from List of museums in Texas in early Dec 2011, and neither had the Houston project banner to begin with. They did get the WPUS banner, as they should have. I'm OK either way on including them as Houston, but I don't want them to lose the WPUS banner. Overall, the museums in Texas could use all the help they can get. I'm not sure what Postoak is referring to, but Houston got the WPUS banner, but it also has separate banners for WikiProject Cities and WikiProject Houston. I added the WPUS banner to the articles I felt were deserving of the banner for the Dallas area.. The High 5 Interchange was de-listed from the banner by one of the Roads editors (even though it does make sense for multiple projects to share the article). Women's History Month and Texas First Ladies and Gents

For Women's History Month, I created List of First Ladies and Gentlemen of Texas and an accompanying Navbox. It's an area that has slipped through the cracks in Wikipedia. Photos are needed, as are individual pages. While all the presidents of the Republic, and the Governors of the state, have had individual articles created, most of the First Ladies of Texas have not, becoming neglected footnotes in history as names married to important persons. The state's only First Gentleman - James E. Ferguson - has his own page, but only because he was first a Governor. Any help anyone would care to give would be welcome. Copyright on images of historical markers

This is just a general FYI for anyone who might include a photo of an historical plaque on any article. I just ran across Commons:Deletion requests, which would indicate there is a copyright issue in play. These are not my images, and I have no idea who took most of them. However, there are a couple of west Texas ones I vaguely remember seeing, and thinking they were obviously somebody just playing tourist and snapping the photo. Article on Medina, Texas is referring to two different places within Texas and needs major revisions.

The article located at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medina,_TX is referring to two distinct places. The introduction is referring to the unincorporated town in Bandera County, and which is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. However, much of the data provided in the article (including all data from the U.S. Census) is referring to the Census Designated Place (CDP) in Zapata County, Texas (in the Rio Grande Valley), which was created prior to the 2000 U.S. Census and used in that census.

Medina CDP was created by separating Zapata CDP into two parts (Zapata County has no incorporated towns or cities and all the significant settlements are CDPs); the western part kept the name Zapata CDP, while the eastern part took the name Medina CDP. The U.S. Census has no specific data for the unincorporated town in Bandera County; the best data source for population (2000 pop. of 515) appears to be "The Handbook of Texas Online":

Under Geography, the geographic co-ordinates are correct, but the area is incorrect, as it describes Medina CDP in Zapata County, TX. Therefore, the entire Demographics section (including population figures) needs to be revised with whatever information can be found from non-U.S. Census sources.

I've edited the Bandera County, TX article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandera_County,_Texas to move Medina from the "Census Designated Place" category to the "Unincorporated Areas" category, at it was clearly the intent of the author to describe the unincorporated town in Bandera County and not the Census Designated Place in Zapata County. I've also added Lake Medina Shores to the "Census Designated Place" category in the Bandera County article, since it is a newly created CDP within Bandera County that first appears in the 2010 Census. Since the U.S. Census only has a 2010 population (and no 2000 population) for Lake Medina Shores CDP, I updated the population figures for Bandera City and Lakehills CDP as well to 2010 (those figures, being U.S. Census data, are both readily available from American Factfinder website at http://factfinder2.census.gov/).

Those changes to the Bandera County, TX page were rather minor. I unfortunately lack the technical expertise to overhaul a whole article, but I wanted to alert the Texas WikiProject that the Medina, TX page needs major revision.

I'm guessing, but that user probably removed them because you put them in the lead, and an article's lead doesn't need sources. It's supposed to be a summation of what is already in the rest of the article. I don't think the references were removed for lack of a link, because links are not required by WP. So, if I were you, I'd just find places to stick them right back in the article, anywhere but in the lead. I don't know if I can comment on the format, because how it is now is not how I break up a page. It would be interesting to know which shopping centers and apartment complexes he owned. Also, where can we find referenced info about the legislative resolution passed after his death? On another note, his great-grandfather appears to have been a prominent earlier developer and judge of the area, and should have his own page if we can find enough references I think. Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Pleasure Island (Borger, Texas amusement park)

I'm suspicious of Pleasure Island (Borger, Texas amusement park). It turns up absolutely zero hits on Google Books or Google News, and all of the hits online appear to be rehashed from Wikipedia, or pages full of gibberish that have nothing to do with "Pleasure Island" or "Borger". In short, I've found literally zero proof that this place even existed, with only a couple memories from the IP on the talk page keeping me from writing this off as a hoax. William P. Hobby, Jr -- WP:COI

I do I.T. work for William P. Hobby, Jr and he recently asked me how he might edit his own page in Wikipedia. He wants to do two things in particular:

1. Bold his book titles.

2. Add a section called, "Family Eponyms."

He didn't ask me to do it, but I was asked about how to do it. Knowing as little as I do about Wikipedia, this kind of editing would seem to fall on the bad side of WP:COI both for him to edit the page and for me to help him to do it.

Putting aside the book title boldenings (which smell a little too much like self-promotion), he is a fount of information about his family's history and he has a lot of ties within the universities around the state.

If this information was of general interest to the page, how might he get this information up there without running afoul of the policies?

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Texas Revolution

Per this discussion at the MilHist Wikiproject, we're trying to get interest in bringing Texas Revolution to FA status and main page prominence by May 25, 2015 (Memorial Day). This will coincide with the airing of History Channel documentary on the events of the Texas Revolution after the Battle of the Alamo. Even if we can't get the article to FA status and on the main page, any improvements we can make to it will assist those who come looking for more information on the topic.

This is a call for volunteers! I think we need 1-2 to do research, 1 to write up the research that has already been done (first half of the war), and 1 one to write up the new stuff. Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Featured list review?

Would anyone be interested in helping to clean up List of tallest buildings in Austin as it is undergoing a featured list review. There are some very big problems with many of the "tallest buildings lists" that are currently featured. I think this list specifically no longer meets featured list criteria. Specifically, two whole sections (under construction and approved) are completely unreferenced. There is an outdated tag from 3 years ago not addressed. There are many dead links, very messy citations, images have no alt-texts, and many of the buildings in the main list are unsourced. It has been neglected for years now and it shows. This would take a lot of work to bring it up to standards again sadly...

WikiProject Women in Red wants your biographies

Might I draw your attention to a new redlist of notable Texas women who lack a wikipedia biography, in the form of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Missing articles by dictionary/Handbook of Texas - drawn from the "The Handbook of Texas". Texas: Texas State Historical Association.

Right now, there are more than five times as many biographies of men as there are of women on wikipedia - see the Wikidata Human Gender Indicators page. I hope this project will lend its support to addressing this imbalance by creating biographies for women within your project's scope, and perhaps by adopting the Handbook of Texas redlist. Templates of municipalities by county: consolidate the "city", "town", and "village" fields into "municipalities"?

I found out that legally there is no longer any distinction between a city, town, or village in Texas law. https://texascityattorneys.org/2009speaker_papers/typescities.pdf

"The Local Government Code, codified in 1987, did away with the distinction of city, town, or village and loosely replaced those terms with Type A, B, or C cities."

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Memorial on the Southwest University campus

Memorial at Southwestern University

Does anyone know anything about the memorial on the Southwestern University campus in Georgetown, Texas, displayed to the right? Francis Asbury Mood's name is inscribed on one side, but I'm struggling to find much more info. ---Another Believer _(Talk) 22:07, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Perhaps because he helped found the university?

And it looks to me like that's his grave marker on the university grounds, "His body was brought to Georgetown and buried on the university grounds. A handsome granite monument marks his resting place."

Revisions

I am planning on working on adding a "Health" section to this article. The current "Healthcare" section covers topics that do not actually concern healthcare, including Maternal Mortality and Obesity. These two topics, amongst others, belong in a separate health section. In addition to these topics, I want to research and cover tobacco use, alcohol use, and infant health. There are a variety of health topics that can be added to this, but I think this is a good place to start. Kilgore College Rangerettes

Was wondering if someone from this WikiProject might be familiar with this dance team and wouldn't mind taking a look at it. There's seems to have been a lot a fluff added over the past ten months or so, including trivial information and photos of some not really Wikipedia notable individuals that probably is not relevant per WP:NOTEVERYTHING.
