Short documentary about the 2015 ArtAndFeminism Edit-a-thon at the museum of modern art in NYC

In honor of Women's History Month, the El Paso Public Library is organizing and hosting a workshop and edit-a-thon on Saturday, March 5th, 2016 and on Sunday, March 6th, 2016. Refreshments will be available.

Art+Feminism is a campaign to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia and to encourage female editorship. Last year, over 1,500 participants at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and more than 75 node events around the world participated in the second annual Wikipedia edit-a-thon, resulting in the creation of nearly 400 new pages and significant improvements to 500 articles on Wikipedia. Organizers are hoping to double these results in 2016, and this is where you come in! The edit-a-thon is an event where you can use your own particular skills and subject knowledge to help build the world’s most popular online research tool. It's a great way to do your part to help close the gender gap, begin to acquire new skills, and improve this facet of Wikipedia.

Goals
  • To encourage inexperienced editors (especially women) and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia
  • To improve a selection of Wikipedia articles related to women artists, critics, dealers, and other women in the visual arts, as well as feminists and feminism
  • To increase awareness of the research resources freely available through libraries, archives, and museums
Questions
  • Do I need to have any Wikipedia experience to participate? No experience is necessary, and training will be provided along with online access to the resources of Lied Library. However, please register a user account on Wikipedia in advance of the event.
  • Do I need to have extensive knowledge on visual arts? Nope! You will be finding information about the artists through our resources. The important thing is knowing how to choose a good source.

Suggested articles to work on edit

Volunteers should feel free to add the names of notable women in the arts who need a better Wikipedia presence, especially ones whose articles could be improved by the inclusion of research resources from EPPL. These lists are not intended to be comprehensive, but rather to provide a starting point for work by edit-a-thon participants. If you are not sure where to start, don't hesitate to ask for help!
