Administrator

We desperately need an administrator to work with us on this project. There are pictures that are virtually impossible to find with a valid license, and therefore we have to claim fair use. However, we know what happens they get tagged and deleted (for ex. the 2011 Pan American Games gold medal was deleted). If we have an administrator they should and can understand why a fair use claim was tagged on that photo, better then an administrator with any knowledge of the topics we cover here. Thoughts? Sorry, but I'm not fully convinced that images like medals can't be find under valid license, at least I can talk about Asian and Commonwealth Games, e.g. we've File:Золотая медаль Азиады-2011.JPG (2011 Asian Winter Games gold medal) and File:2010 CWG silver medal.jpg (2010 Commonwealth Games silver medal). These kind of images aren't too hard to find, you may ask any Mexican Wikipedia user [well, unfortunately I don't know anyone] to capture some Pan American Games related pictures. And I highly doubt that any administrator would ever convince to retain these types of images under fair use, as it would certainly violate the image policies of Wikipedia. — Bill william compton^Talk 16:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Google searches almost always return copyrighted images and should never be used to find pictures. An admin is not desperately needed and I reject the notion that only admins understand fair use. Fair use never applies when a free image can be found, so medals would never be allowable under fair use. I wasn't implying that administrators are the only ones who are understand of fair use. What I was trying to say is if one of us were able to become an administrator they would understand the issue at hand. Intoronto, the picture you're implying wasn't really eligible for fair usage. The rule is simple– you shouldn't/can't use those picture that can be found easily, and medals aren't really too difficult to find. And as StrPby said, there is no fierce need of an admin and RfA is a very long and complicated procedure, so even if we nominate someone, it wouldn't be much helpful for that user to pass RfA. I think you should wait and watch, as perhaps any user by the date of Games may upload images you want. — Bill william compton^Talk 04:29, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

"Popular pages" for the project

Talking of resources, I now have a copy of - The Lands That FIFA Forgot. It's got some semi-decent info about the history of the Island Games (very much with a focus on football). I'll dig through it when I can and add anything useful - no promises on when I'll have time to do this, though.

I've also got various bits of info from my trip to the Isle Of Wight last week - general programme for the whole event, specific programmes for Football and Basketball, individual game programmes from five football matches. I've also got a bunch of photos to upload at some point. I recieved an e-mail from the head of the NatWest Island Games regarding competitor participation, due to server limitations they were unable to publish this data on the website. This discussion already has more people involved than that one, so it's not a very good example :P.

Although, it's similar to saying "Person x said that 'object y causes effect z'". You can't source what someone said, which is a huge problem in scenarios such as the Island Games where a lot of information I added came from the organisers telling me stuff. Not sure about the OR, but yes it would definitely fail the criteria of reliability, as this type of source can easily be tampered, and really I'm not pointing on you. As Bill william compton and I have pointed out in the section directly above this, personal correspondence can be forged and you would find it extremely difficult to pass it off as a reliable source. I am very concerned that we're going down this route to source out information and would strongly urge all project members to stick to policy on this. He wouldn't, but there is a possibility that allegations can be made against the uploader of the document. For instance I've a copy of the doha-2006.com which hosts past results of the Asian Games, but I can't use those pages as website has been shutdown, and there is no way I could prove their reliability. — Bill william compton^Talk 17:32, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

For websites that no longer exist, Wikipedia policy allows using the Wayback Machine as a reference, so you can just use that. With regards to the image issue however, if it has a signature I'd say it's definitely reliable. I know WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS but if we use FOX News as a "Reliable Source", I honestly doubt that the off chance that someone would create a fake photo, forge an official signature on to it, and then use it as a reference for a sports article is of paramount concern. WP:Be Bold, anyone with common sense would know it wouldn't be forged. Policies need not apply to a case where everyone involved can clearly see it's not really that important. The article in question is Cycling at the 2011 Pan American Games – Qualification and the image is not necessarily needed, as one could look at the results of the qualification tournaments and plug in the qualifications. However, that is sort of like OR and the image (which was pretty close to what I put up manually) is needed until at least the start of the games. Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Multi-sport events to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Multi-sport events/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. Importance and Rating

I propose that we (that is, anyone reading) attempt to kick this project up again with a little wiki-drive, starting this Friday and continuing to Sunday night in order to rate the quality and importance of as many articles on our project list as possible. There's far too many "???"'s on the most viewed pages list for my liking, and far too many pages for me to realistically do it on my own. Anyone else got the spare time to help out? Dew Tour

The 67th item on the above stats, Dew Tour [1], was created in Feb 2008 and speedy deleted recently after OlYeller21 (talk · contribs) tagged it as {{g11}} and an edit summary of "See Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Dew_Tours". Categories for sports festivals

Sports festival redirects to Multi-sport event, so this WikiProject must have the experts on the subject. Should Category:Sports festivals by country and all its immediate contents be nominated for renaming along the lines of "Multi-sport events"? or are they fine as they are? Not a good idea, this hierarchy contains subcategories/articles of other WikiProjects too, like Category:Sports festivals in England contains — 1975 Cricket World Cup (WP Cricket), World Snooker Championships (WP Snooker), 2011 BWF World Championships (WP Badminton), 1984 Summer Paralympics (WP Olympics), etc. As we already have too much on our plate, it would just overflow everything. — Bill william compton^Talk 22:16, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Intoronto, there's no need of "serious cleanup", having a redirect of sports festival to multi-sport events can't be a possible rationale. Single sport tournaments like world championships or world cups also considered as sport festivals. If "sports festival" means multi-sport event, and a straw poll of my colleagues indicates that it does, then any single-sport event within that category tree should be removed, and recategorised within Category:Sports competitions by sport and by country if not already in those. "Sports festival" does sound a bit vague, so I don't blame editors for putting other stuff in those categories in good faith, but re-naming them as "multi-sports events" would stop that. - Fayenatic (talk) 16:30, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

I think "sports festivals" has been treated as a general phrase to denote sporting championships and games. The phrase arises because there is a common idea behind these two (high profile, top-tier, non-seasonal, host-rotating sporting events). Simply using either "championships" or "multi-sport events" would create a division which isn't entirely necessary. It is easy to discern these types of competitions from the more low-level, fixed-location, annual events (e.g. Malaysian Grand Prix) which would be more helpfully contained in the broader "Sport in X" categories. For example, I think many users like the division (in principle, if not name) between Category:Sports festivals in London and Category:Sport in London. SFB 23:27, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Biography scope

Regarding edits such as this. Is this stepping beyond our scope? For me, a person would have to have more significant connections to the idea of multi-sport events for them to fall into the project scope; for example, people directly involved in the administration/foundation etc. of a multi-sport event.

Surely being a mere participant is not enough? I worry that extending the project scope in this direction would definitively move it towards a sports biography-based project rather than an events-based one. SFB 23:32, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

I find myself in total agreement. Leave the sports biographies to WP:WPBIO and WP:WPSPORTS. The only biographies we should be tagging as ours is those of people closely related to multi-sport events, e.g. Goodwill Games founder Ted Turner. To an extent maybe. But that would have to be specific: if their only claim to notability on Wikipedia is a medal at a multi-sport event, then yes, I'd say they count. But again the question comes how we'll decide who's more "closely related to MSEs". Many athletes like Lin Dan, Leander Paes, Liu Xiang, Lee Chong Wei, Ian Thorpe, Li Na, Nicol David, are very much significant to either Asian or Commonwealth Games context I'm not much aware of the Pan Am Games, but almost all of them have won medals in Olympics too, but they are considered elite in their respective regional Games. So, wouldn't they come under our project's scope? if not then why? because IMO their participation in the MSEs (except OLY) is crucial in many ways. WPOLYMPICS also consider all participants of Summer/Winter Olympics under its scope. — Bill william compton^Talk 04:01, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

It's a much easier decision when the project is an event-specific one like the Olympics. This is a general event project. Bear in mind that extending the scope to games medallists would probably factor in over a hundred thousand biographies (including virtually all our articles on swimmers, divers, athletes, amateur boxers, volleyball players, equestrianists, gymnasts, hockey players, pentathletes, rowers, sailers, shooters, table tennis players, triathletes, weightlifters, and wrestlers). Would adding the 100,000 Pan American Games medallists really be an improvement of the project scope? SFB 11:26, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

2011 Pan American Games

Hey, I didn't know where to post this for you to know. I would edit it my self if it was text, as i usually do, but i don't know how to deal with images within wikipedia. Please notice that in the Pan American Games article, in the image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pan_American_Games_host_countries.png there is a mistaken reference. one of the Red dots describing "Cities that have hosted Pan American Games" shouldn't be there, nor anywhere (i've checked the remaining dots). This dot is missplaced in the west-central part of Argentina, close to Mendoza city and near Chile, and its dated "1990" (that year no Panamerican Game took place). Sports festival/multi-sport category discussion

I just want to draw attention to the discussion going on here about the renaming of the "sports festivals" categories. Note that a previous discussion ended with the conclusion of renaming the "sports festivals" categories to "multi-sport events" categories. This is now being reconsidered. Summer Universiade 2011 – Weightlifting

Hello!

I don't know exactly to who to turn in this situation, but since the Universiade is within the scope of this project I thought this might be the best place.

Not much after the +105kg finals were finished, news came up that the Egyptian weightlifter was caught with doping allegations, and today it was made official that he is guilty and they took his gold medal, which is awarded now to former second placed Peter Nagy. International Weightlifting Federation reports, that

"FISU officially confirmed the disqualification of Mohamed Masoud Ihssan (EGY), originally +105kg gold medal winner at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, China due to his positive doping result. According to the updated results, the new Universiade Champion is Péter Nagy (HUN) who achieved the same Total of 412kg." (source)

Due to my lack of knowledge where to find the results and who to move up to second and third place respectively, I would like to ask your help. For the same reasons I just cannot update the medal tables with the proper results.

Event

Do any of the sports and games organizations (governing body of a sport or game, administrator of a "multi-sport event", administrator of a meet in one sport or game) use the term "event" in the high-level comprehensive sense of this wikiproject and the main article multi-sport event?

Or do they use "event" in narrow sense, low-level sense (and perhaps avoid using "competition" as a countable noun), near or even at the front/head/bottom of this phrase:

• the pole-vault event of the men's decathlon event of the athletics event of the 2012 summer olympic(s) event

There is some tendency at wikipedia to say this or nearly this (and your own project puts "event" at the back/foot/top):

• the pole-vault discipline of the men's decathlon competition of the athletics sport of the 2012 summer olympic event

I wonder whether this is a wikipedia neologism, or derives from the hospitality industry, without yet much use in the sporting industry. Naming of Stadiums

When naming stadiums do we include the sponsors name if the stadium will be known to that title for only two weeks? What I am referring to is the 2015 Pan American Games. The athletics stadium will be known as the CIBC Pan Am and Parapan Am Athletics Stadium during the games but before and after them as Pan Am and Parapan Am Athletics Stadium. Personally I'd use the non-sponsored name, Wikipedia's policy is to use the common name and the fact that the sponsored name will only be in use for two weeks means the non-sponsored name is probably more common. --Kafuffle (talk) 11:06, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

Hockey at the Commonwealth Games

I propose these articles be renamed to field hockey at the commonwealth games. Considering many people use hockey to stand for ice hockey it just doesn't work to have "hockey" as the title. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Category- Athletes by sport and games and year

I have proposed that the above category types be upmerged to the main "Games athletes" category (which are almost exclusively empty) e.g. Category:Asian Games go players contains only Category:Asian Games go players by year - I think categories Category:Go players at the 2010 Asian Games‎ should be in the main Asian Games go players category . I've pretty much finished with a large overhaul of the main multi-sport article base and categories. Plenty of new categories to be explored in Category:Multi-sport events now. There is one outstanding issue within Category:Sports at multi-sport events. I've proposed that we move all these "XYZ Games events" articles to "Sports at the XYZ Games" instead, seeing as the events themselves are always categorised by the sport. Photos at Commonwealth Games venues

The terms of Glasgow 2014 tickets placed tight restrictions on the use of photos taken inside the venues, making such photos incompatible with free licences. London 2012 tickets had similar terms, but from what I remember the consensus was that such terms were essentially unenforceable. Has there been any similar discussion in relation to Glasgow 2014? To be honest, Getty is not going to be put out of business by my 200mm lens from the cheap seats, but even grainy photos would be better than nothing of some of the more obscure athletes, and I did get one or two nice closeups. Some sports events of the Asian Games are classified in a group. Tennis and soft tennis are in tennis, baseball and softball are in baseball, beach volleyball and volleyball are in volleyball at the Asian Games. Soft tennis at the 2014 Asian Games and Softball at the 2014 Asian Games are separated but Beach volleyball at the 2014 Asian Games not. Like soft tennis and softball, Beach volleyball at the 2014 Asian Games should be separated from Volleyball at the 2014 Asian Games. Also Universiade, Youth Olympics, All-Africa Games, Pan American Games, Central American and Caribbean Games, Mediterranean Games, Island Games, Bolivarian Games, South American Games, Lusophony Games, and Pacific Mini Games are separated. Split The sport Olympic pages are seperated: Volleyball at the Summer Olympics and Beach volleyball at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Also Rugby union and Rugby sevens are split for the Olympics. In the schedule of 2012 Summer Olympics#calendar it's unclear that also beach volleybal is a sport: it looks like only volleybal is contested. Oppose first I was waiting for more responses to write a comment here. but it seems the nominator didn't take the advise "to not move pages before more people respond". I did revert all his edits. second we have separate pages for each event. so the page isn't even big but this is not my main reason, personally I'm not that against this move but There should be one concensus for all multi-sport events. people in Olympic project decided to keep volleyball and beach volleyball in the same page, so before any move you have to ask for this move in Olympic project talk page, the "Asian Games" better just follow what wikipedians do for Olympic project. Osplace contributed to or created Beach volleyball at the 2007 Pan American Games and Beach volleyball at the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, split away from Volleyball at the 2007 Pan American Games. Hi, if there are volunteers who would like to help include the Pacific Games in the encyclopedia – in particular the events of the 2015 Pacific Games which start next month, July 2015 – please post a reply in this section.

I have created the pages below for the missing early Games to fill in the blanks and, although they are all referenced, most are Start class or C class at best. If anyone has access to source material for these (or indeed the more recent editions) feel free to improve the articles.
