Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history/Post-Cold War task force

Getting this launched

Hi all, I must first apologise for my sudden dissapearance right after I started this page. I've been in hospital but all is well now and I'm available again. We probably still need a few more hands on deck to be really viable. Unfortunately the discussion I started on the main MILHIST talk page has already been archived - is the archive interval usually so short there? I wonder how many otherwise viable ideas have suffered "death by archiving" with such a short live page time. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:26, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Several commentators have said at the abovementioned discussion, and earlier similar talk topics, that task forces don't do much more than create categories for tagging articles for era, region, etc. Imho that is by itself a perfectly sufficient reason to go ahead and create this task force and its relevant templates and categories. To my mind having gaps in the "periods and conflicts" parameter of the project banner is ridiculous. We should have an era tag for everything from when the first Neanderthal clans fought over access to a mastadon herd, right up to yesterday's news from Afghanistan and the DRC. Region tags are comprehensive, era should be too, because space and time are fundamental properties of the universe. Everything that has ever existed or happend must be described by time and place, after that the rest is variable detail. Ok, that's enough metaphysical philosophizing from me for one evening... Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 18:18, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

I reiterate my support for this as a gap filler. However, why does the task force image include the Soviet flag if this is post-Cold War? Kges1901 (talk) 20:38, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
G'day, as per Kges' comment, I agree the image as currently used (File:Coldwar.png) probably isn't the best fit. The task force userbox (when created) would also need a representative image (which could be the same as the main image if desired). AustralianRupert (talk) 04:32, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

This photo or something similar might do
The Coldwar.png image is my fault. It's a "leftover" from when I initially created this page by simply copying the lead section of the Cold War TF page and just added "Post-" in front of the phrase. I think a good photo of the fall of the Berlin Wall would do quite well as that is probably the iconic moment when the world knew the Cold War had ended. Inviting the guys from the Ongoing Conflicts Incubator. As far as my participation goes I will unfortunately only be available nine months from now due to an IRL commitment. Once I return I will start helping with tagging and whatnot.--Catlemur (talk) 22:58, 12 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'll support the creation of this task force, even it is for organizational purposes only. -Indy beetle (talk) 03:01, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm still a bit ambivalent, but this is probably timely given we are having a drive in March or April, when we can probably get some serious task-force tagging done. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 03:19, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
I'm happy to help, but again, I'd like to see some involvement with identifying resources and requested articles or articles for expansion, etc. (While we are in the incubation phase, perhaps these could just be listed here on the talk page, until the relevant template can be created). I would also ask that those interested in participating, add their names to the "Participants" section (I've added a few from the previous talk page thread already). In terms of the coding required to set up the task force as part of the MILHIST banner, I don't have the expertise, though. It is something that User:Kirill Lokshin has usually handled. So it is probably best to get his thoughts also. The April backlog drive, as currently formulated, will include points for adding articles to task forces, as well as points for updating/identifying resources, etc. for task forces, so it might go some way to helping to revitalise them a little. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 04:34, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
As I won't be around much during the drive, I've pr-emptively tagged a bunch of Croatian War of Independence and Bosnian War articles, a lot of which are GAs, there's even one FA. As Rupert said, the next step is to ask Kirill to sort out the coding so this all works from the banner. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 05:06, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Armed men without insignia (so-called "little green men") in Simferopol Airport, 28 February 2014.
I might be biased but Little Green Men are also pretty iconic as far as modern warfare goes.Catlemur (talk) 11:31, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Are there any other opinions on this? I don't really mind, either way, and I note that we can change the image later if need be. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 01:55, 21 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
@WP:MILHIST coordinators: G'day, based on the couple of threads on the Milhist talk page, and those here, I feel that there is probably relative consensus for the creation of this task force. Would you all mind offering an opinion about a task force image for the userbox and task force banner? Also, Kirill would you mind having a look at the coding required to add this task force to the {{WikiProject Military history}}. Once that is done, I will look to work on the various periphery (userbox, categories, logs, and various bot requests). We can then use the April drive to populate the resources and open task lists etc. Thank you for your time. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 02:04, 21 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Update

edit

Ok, I've moved the draft task force over into the Wikipedia space now and created a few of the peripheral items. User:Kirill Lokshin is looking at adding the coding to {{MILHIST}}. Once that is done, there will be a large number of categories to create (these are currently red linked on Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Post-Cold War task force but shouldn't really be created until the MILHIST template can accept the task force coding). I will also add the task force to Wikipedia:Article alerts/Subscription list and User:Community Tech bot/Popular pages config.json. If anyone is keen, I really need a hand identifying articles for the various aspects of the Open tasks list and resources to add to the Resources section. Any assistance here would be most appreciated. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 08:42, 4 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@WP:MILHIST coordinators: I have created the categories now. Will do the article alerts and popular pages listings once the talk page banner has been adjusted. Still need a hand with tagging articles, and with populating the open tasks lists and resources lists. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 08:20, 10 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Dodger67:@WP:MILHIST coordinators:  : Ok, I think I've worked out the coding for the talk page template, so the task force should now be functional in that regard (if you notice any anomalies, can you please let me know?). I have tagged a couple of articles as test, and it seems to be working. (For example, Template talk:Post-Cold War European conflicts and Talk:Pro-Indonesia militia). I have also completed the article alert and popular pages bot requests. I believe that the JL-bot recognised content will automatically update as articles at GA, A, FA and FL are tagged for the task force. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 00:46, 11 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Not quite sure what is happening there, as I had tagged all those Croatian War of Independence and Bosnian War articles, and JL-bot has not added them when it ran. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 01:18, 11 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
G'day, PM, JL bot ran before the MILHIST talk page template had been edited to accept the new task force. As such, it couldn't identify any content as not everything was "talking". (JL-bot was triggered by me making the cats, but there wasn't anything in the cats until the template was updated). It should slowly catch up as the cache is purged...I think. Regards, 03:08, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
@Peacemaker67: I have gone through and done a number of "dummy edits" to the articles you added the task force to, in order to purge the cache. It seems to be the only way to make them appear in the appropriate categories. Not sure why, sorry. I haven't gotten through all the GAs, yet, though, but will keep working at it. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 04:34, 11 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
AustralianRupert it doesn't seem to have worked, as it still isn't populating... Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 23:49, 12 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
G'day, PM, the bot hasn't run a recognised content update since the 10th, so I think it should pick it up in the next couple of days. [1]. I am still working through purging the talk pages of the GAs that were there before, so that they appear in Category:GA-Class Post-Cold War articles. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

edit

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Many articles are untagged

edit

This task force would be much more active, if not the busiest of all in Milhist, if only more (all) of the relevant articles were properly tagged. I took just a quick-and-dirty look at a sample of actively edited "current events" articles and only a small fraction of them had a Post Cold War era tag. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:14, 11 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think that clarifying the Scope section would help with this, "the period of global military tension" might be unclear to potential members. Maybe there could be a list of the types of articles that qualify for inclusion? ---EngineeringEditor (talk) 15:07, 26 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
