Joining the WikiProject?

Hello fellow editors of the WikiProject Maps!

I am very interested in creating maps for Wikipedia and have been creating a bunch of high quality maps lately and have been putting some of them into the infoboxes of the article and I was wondering if I could be of any assistance to the WikiProject Maps? Map legend guidelines?

Are there any rules, policy essays, or guidelines regarding legends for maps? Current a discussion at Talk:Syrian_Kurdistan#Military_map_issues about the inclusion of a legend item. As far as I'm concerned, if there's a color on a map, it should be in the legend. But wasn't sure if there were any official guidelines. Any help would be appreciated. Lines on maps

Hello! Am aware of the Template:Location map+ where multiple locations can be highlighted on a map. But is there any template to draw a line between such locations? These could be useful for drawing maps of roads/rail routes etc. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 12:44, 16 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

high priority re current event; Mount Polley mine disaster

I just added mapreq to the talkpage of the article, but wanted to place a heads-up here; the article, like the disaster, is only a few days old, and a map would go along ways towards enriching the article, which given it's the largest such disaster in Canadian history and there's lots of coverage, could be an FA candidate.Skookum1 (talk) 02:56, 10 August 2014 (UTC)

Map convention update to come

Locator map de facto best practice as of 2014

As some map making practices have evolve a lot since the last revamp of the map conventions in 2011(?), I plan to make a revamp soon. Several key issues are to bring in :

• the change brought by the Toolbox_SVG_locator_maps-en.svg (shown at the right)
• the Wikimaps Atlas Project, which copy the WP convention but radically change map making practices, SVG code output, and enlarge possible usages. This project also require map guidelines to be more aligned.
• some orther minor push are also to report.

I don't know when I will have the time to do so, but this revamp is needed. Yug (talk) 15:34, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

Appalachian geospatial data question

This map is really bugging me because it's not accurate and appears to have been brushed over haphazardly. I mean there's a whole administrative region in Quebec named after the Appalachians, but the current map barely touches the province, so I was wondering where I could find actual official map data for the Appalachians which I could use in Photoshop, Inkscape, or other software to draw a more accurate map. My problems are:

1. Does such data exist? I am under the impression that there are vastly different meanings to the word "The Appalachians" depending on the discipline. Other than geological and other such data, does a pure geographic definition of the Appalachian Mountains exist?
2. I have been googling this, and have found such things as:

• Something from the EPA's ArcGIS that I don't quite understand how to navigate?
• XML files from the USGS that I also don't understand, but I think are about water drainage and not geospatial data
• This NationalAtlas.gov map from which I don't think it's possible to extract data and it's about the Appalachian Highlands rather than the Appalachian Mountains, so the boundaries are larger

1. If a data set does exist, what program(s) would be the most useful in achieving my goal?

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. NYC Subway map needs fixing

This may be out of this WikiProject's scope but there is an error in this map. I have posted to WikiProjects NYC and NYC Public Transportation about this.

In short, the D line, identified by the irregularly spaced "D"'s in white font and depicted in orange on this map, has a white dot indicating a stop at 14th Street on the left center section of the map. Can this white dot be changed to be the same shade of orange as the rest of the line? – Epicgenius (talk) 19:17, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

Grouping colors

I initially came here to share a link to ColorBrewer2, one of the most helpful apps I've ever found online, but was pleased to see that it was already cited as a reference under Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Conventions#Area maps (multiple areas).

Prior to looking at this table, I was going to use one of the color sets from ColorBrewer2, particularly the one that is "colorblind safe". The colors selected on the table are not listed as "colorblind safe", and I was wondering if there was a reason for this? For now I'll use the selection listed, but I figured it would be best to provide maps that can be read by as many people as possible. – Maky ^« talk » 21:33, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
