Looking for any Maine photographers willing to shoot and upload to Commons for Connected farm, as southern Maine seems to be one of the primary locales for such style of home, according to the definitive study of connected farm distribution, which is, admittedly, old. North American ice storm of 1998 GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Meteorology and atmospheric sciences" articles. I have reviewed North American ice storm of 1998 and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues concerning sourcing that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article along with other WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. Maine towns

I've noticed that a number of articles on Maine towns are named in the form "Townname (Town), Maine", even though "Townname, Maine" is not otherwise occupied, and in fact is a redirect to the "(Town)" article. This seems unnecessarily variant to our normal naming conventions (don't disambiguate unnecessarily), but before I go ahead and boldly changed I figured I'd ask the relevant wikiproject if there was any reason for this state of affairs. I've created the missing county categories and have begun sorting through Category:People from Maine. All of those in this category should be recategorized into the correct county of their birth/residence/prominence unless no county is cited. Maine articles needing geographic coordinates

26 articles in Category:Maine articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Maine is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:16, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. Maine Civil War regimental histories

I have just completed 25 articles of Maine Civil War regimental histories. This now completes the List of Maine Civil War units. I have not altered any of the previously created regimental histories (except for the 11th Maine Infantry, in which my great-great grandfather served) and encourage someone else to take the initiative to bring them up to date. Harrington Meeting House / Harrington Meetinghouse

Can an expert check if these are in fact the same historical building please? Both the dates and locations are very close but not exact matches. - TB (talk) 23:38, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

That is quite strange. Their GPS coordinates are slightly off also. Bristol is such a small town though, it is unlikely they'd have two buildings dating back 230+ years named the same thing. For the record, I would merge the non-NRHP article into the NRHP one given that the NRHP is probably a better source than the website.--TM 23:47, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. Hospital articles

We are missing articles on six of the seven Eastern Maine Health Services-owned hospitals (and apparently, the EMHS article itself)

• Charles A. Dean Memorial Hospital
• Inland Hospital
• Sebasticook Valley Health

If anyone's interested in working on articles for these I'd be more than willing to help. I also noticed that we're missing the Dorthea Dix Psychiatric Center / Bangor Mental Health Institute / Eastern Maine Insane Asylum. The Maine Memories site has a bit on it in tangled up in their EMMC article if anyone wants to work on that. The St. Joseph Hospital (Bangor, Maine) article is also absent. All of these are notable enough for inclusion, it's just a matter of actually writing the articles.

MassMailing(s) appearance

First, I'll apologize to everyone that got two copies of the message. I sent it to both the category for members and the mailing list, and if you are on both, you got it twice. I'm hoping that we will not only be able to put together a nice form for future mailings here, but also we will be able to incorporate any users in the category into the mailing list (not that the category will be used for mailings most of the time). First, I note it is possible to do as Wikipedia:WikiProject Star Wars has done in the past and generate a "roll call", which basically at a particular time moves all members to a "inactive" or "formerly active" section of the members list and then tells them if they wish to remain active to move their name to the "active members" section.

Secondly, I actually don't live anywhere near Maine, and would be extemel unlikely to attend any sort of meetings. Sorry about that.

Thirdly, I think this project, like a lot of others, might have some issues regarding both the number of members and the number of members who have ready access to detailed sources, and the issue for those who have access of what material fits best for which article. The latter is a not insignificant concern for a lot of articles and topics. In general, one of the best ways of doing this is to find relevant reference sources and see which articles they give the greatest amount of space to and the various subdivisions of articles they have. Going to Worldcat I find a "Biographical encyclopedia of Maine of the nineteenth century" which is in the public domain and could be added to commons and wikisource, and a few other directly relevant reference sources, like "The dictionary of Maine place-names," "Maine composers and their music" volumes 1 and 2, "The Maine Dictionary," "A Biographical dictionary of architects in Maine," and some others. Lists of articles included in them, and maybe other sources like the Dictionary of American Biography, maybe added to a special project page like Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/Encyclopedic articles might help a lot. If anyone could add any particular older or public domain books to wikimedia commons or wikisource, where I and presumably others could proofread them, those sources could well be useful in putting together "History of" articles and similar subtopical articles for Maine and presumably areas or cities in Maine. They might also help develop related content at wikibooks or wikiversity as well.

Members list

Hey guys and gals! I've made some adjustments to our members list and it is now usable by Mass message sender as a mailing list to send out WPME notices and updates. I'm noticing there are people that have been inactive (or blocked) for over a year and in some cases many years. What do we want to do with those names? Remove them from the list? Let them stay, but not send mailings? What "inactivity limits" should we set, and what steps for each level? I'll send out a mailing to everyone on the list and those in our members category to get some more feedback as-well-as post my own ideas tomorrow. 1. There are apparently a lot of inactive members on our participants list (and even a user that has been blocked for years). What do we as a project want to do about inactive or blocked users? I have some ideas on the issue, but would love feedback from others.
   • Remove blocked users that appear to be no longer interested in participating in developing Wikipedia.
   • Users with zero activity at all in three years are unlikely to come back. I suggest that we remove them from the mailing list and deactivate any categorizing feature of a userbox on their page. When doing this, we must make sure to leave a note on their talk page explaining that since they have been off-wiki for three years that they have been removed from the list as a purely technical measure and they are more than welcome to add themselves back to the list if they choose to start editing again.
   • Users with zero activity on wiki for 18 months may come back, despite it being unlikely. I would suggest that we mark those users as inactive on our mailing list, and stop sending them messages like this one to prevent their user talk page from filling up with irrelevant notices.
   • Users with zero activity on wiki for at least six months should be marked as inactive in the mailing list template, but should still receive mailings.

I suggest creating a separate list for inactive members. That way we keep them with the project and can send them messages separately if we wish.Thewellman (talk) 18:05, 11 June 2014 (UTC)

• I would only point out that it is quite possible for someone to add a template to the user talk page of someone who has been inactive for a substantial period of time, which also serves as a bit of a courtesy notice to anyone else who might seek to contact someone who has been inactive for a significant period of time. The Great American Wiknic

I'm wondering if there is any interest in doing a Wiknic in Maine's geographical area this year. I remember bringing this up last year, and trying to coordinate something, but nothing resulted from it. So, this year, I'm asking if anyone else is interested in this kind of thing and would like to suggest Portland, Augusta, or Bangor as the three most likely areas to host such a thing. You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. Suggestion

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject Maine to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Maine/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the Tool Labs tool. Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

Dead links on project page

There seem to be a few dead links on the project page. Does anyone know what they are supposed to link too? or where these things never created?

For example under the Departments Section the 'Collaboration', 'Gallery', and 'Top-Importance articles' are broken.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
