UK Police force pages

I think that the badge should be their main image, rather than a picture of the area it serves.

Calvin 11:16, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

I think the thinking behind it is that the first image you see should provide the key information. And for UK police forces that have similar badges, the location is more critical as initial information. SGGH speak! 21:08, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Unsure where to put this, but have a look at Sandford (Police Training Village), even the concept is fascinating! Chris 18:32, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

Pacific Patrol Boat Program

I don't think this article fits within the scope of the project. It seems more like a military organization to me but it seemed questinable, so before removing the WPLE tag I thought I'd see what everyone thought.EMT1871 12:05, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

Tricky one. It looks to essentially be a coast guard-related topic. Glancing at some of the articles in the list of coast guards around the world in the coast guard article, some are tagged LE and some not. There's also considerable debate on talk:coast guard about whether they are search and rescue, military, police, etc. I'd say they could all be included in the LE scope, along with border patrols generally, since there's a clear law enforcement function there. My impression is that even when these operations look to be more military than anything, protecting national security and sovereignty, they're more geared to enforcing international law than protecting from invaders, i.e., illegal fishing by foreign vessels and the like. bobanny 16:14, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
If it enforces the law then in remains in this project. =) Dep. Garcia ( Talk + | Help Desk | Complaints ) 10:33, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
If we go by that rule ,than Military Police enforce laws and they should be in the project, yet they are specifically excluded.EMT1871 12:30, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Oh yes, sorry. Ill be more specific... If it enforces civilian law, then it remains in this project. lol =D Regards Dep. Garcia ( Talk + | Help Desk | Complaints ) 15:00, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

That is not necessarily true either, a Parking attendant enforces civilian law, but is not included in the project (rightfuly so I might add). Anyway, I don't think the Pacific Patrol Boat Program belongs in the project, it seems much more miltary to me. --EMT1871 19:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
I always saw it as Police, Ambulance, Fire and Coast Guard. They are a seperate emergency service aren't they? SGGH speak! 00:27, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
My gut feeling is that the military project is even less like to want them then us. I can certainly see why they wouldn't be included in this project, despite my comment above. It's a judgment call, and I'll defer to others on this. My main concern is that we be consistent, and that if we don't include this, we unload other coast guardish articles as well. bobanny 03:24, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
I agree that other coast guard-like organizations should be excluded because, at least to me, a coast guard is a military organization. I'll wait one more day to see if anyone else has any comments on this then I'll remove the WP:LE tag if we are in the same place. I have to say I'm not used to creating this much discussion on something, usually I keep my thoughts pretty non-controversial. EMT1871 11:44, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

Death threat AfD

This stub is currently up for deletion. I feel it has plenty of room for expansion as noted on the talk page. Template:Infobox UK Police and Lincolnshire Police article

Can someone sort this out, the budget part of the infobox is messing up articles, e.g. Lincolnshire Police - an article I'm working on at the moment.

Also, if anyone wants to help me get Lincolnshire Police to a WP:GA or WP:FA standards, that would be much appreciated.

Tompkins Square Park Police Riot (1988) GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria. I'm specifically going over all of the "World History-Americas" articles and just reviewed Tompkins Square Park Police Riot (1988). I believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues consideringe sourcing that should be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I am leaving this message at this project page, along with the other relevant task forces/WikiProjects/editors to the article, since the article falls under this topic and figured you might be interested in helping to improve the article further. The article needs just a few more inline citations and some minor cleanup, and if fixed, I'll pass the article. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 08:04, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Comparative bullet-lead analysis

I notice that the comparative bullet-lead analysis is not linked to by any actual articles. Response to message left at Portal talk:Criminal justice

In response to a note from SGGH (talk · contribs) left at Portal talk:Criminal justice, there's not really that much more that needs to be done for the portal - I personally have one currently up at WP:FPORTC, and another currently undergoing review at WP:PPREV. Once the review for the portal I have undergoing a portal peer review is done, I'll submit this one for a review next. As far as ways that the WP:LE project could help out - the two best areas of the portal that will need updating over time are the Portal:Criminal justice/Featured content and Portal:Criminal justice/Things you can do subsections. If you know of any other WP:FA or WP:GA-rated articles not yet included in the "Selected article" or "Selected biography" sections, please let me know. Please respond to this comment at Portal talk:Criminal justice - that way we can keep relevant portal-related discussions over there. Cirt (talk) 06:03, 20 January 2008 (UTC).

Forward THREE

THIS FORWARD IS NOW CLOSED

To all users, in light of reading the recent changes people's version of our forwards, I have decided to set up the following system of awards, to run until February 28 2008. As you know, we have three levels of award, one stripe, three stripes and three stipes with a medal underneath (see them here and there is also a document holder award, for those who just don't have the place to store all their wiki-notes.

Therefore, if users (in this project or not) furfill any of the below criteria, they are elligible for the award!

  • Create 5+ articles, of any size, that are in the scope of this project, ensure they are all tagged! - One-stripe Project Award (A1)
  • Create or substantially (over 50%) expand 10+ articles, of any size, that are in the scope of this project, ensure they are all tagged! - Three-stripe Project Award (A2)
  • Create or substantially (over 50%) expand 15+ articles, of any size, that are in the scope of this project, ensure they are all tagged! - Three-stripe and Medal Project Award (A3)
  • Welcome over half of the new members to the project, from January 20 2008 until the end of this forward - Document holder award (A4)
  • Produce for the project any good quality, law enforcement related images from January 20 until February 28 - One-strip Project Award (A5)
  • Revert/warn 15+ vandalisms to articles that are part of this project - One Anti-Vandalism Barnstar (A6)
  • Be substantially involved in promoting one law enforcement article to GA - Three-stripe Project Award (A7)
  • Be substantially involved in promoting one law enforcement article to FA - Three-stripe and Medal Project Award (A8)
  • Tag 15+ Law Enforcement Article Talk Pages with the projects banner within the WP:LE Scope - One-Stripe Project Award (A9)

Please sign up below (the forward is open to all coordinators, myself included, though we will be giving each other the awards if we complete any of the above) and, when you have completed them, please list the (A_) of the task yu have completed, and please provide diffs if possible. Come February 28, prizes will be handed out!

Lets get involved, and kick this project up a gear! SGGH speak! 11:20, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Sign up for the forward!

Ladies and gentlemen the forward is now in the process of being closed (as it is, where I am living, getting close to February 28) I will copy the above records to Wikipedia:WikiProject Law Enforcement/Forward Three where the data will be protected (to prevent any last minute altering of the figures!) and from that data only I will hand out awards. For my own part in the forward (little though it was) I would ask Police Mad Jack if he could post my awards on my talk page. Great work to all who took part, most productive forward yet. Door breaching article

I've started a new article on door breaching, because the dynamic entry and forcible entry articles were short and not well sourced. My goal is to get "door breaching" into a good state that covers fire, EMS, police, and military breaching equipment and techniques. The dynamic entry article can then cover the other aspects, such as room clearing, and forcible entry should probably merge into the breaching article. Right now all my good sources are military (the joys of public domain field manuals) but the police, fire, and EMS aspects are pretty skimpy. I'd appreciate any help or comments. scot (talk) 15:30, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Defintion of WikiProject Law Enforcement?

Disambiguation   Done

The front page for this project Wikipedia:WikiProject Law Enforcement states:

Welcome to the Law Enforcement Wikiproject on the English Wikipedia! We are a group dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to law enforcement.

However, law enforcement redirects to Police, and there is a lot more to law enforcement than policing. Either we need an article actually on law enforcement, and-or law enforcement should be a disambiguation page, for example User:Pee Tern/Sandbox/lea dab

Third opinions sought at Certis CISCO

Dear fellow WikiProject Law Enforcement members, I am currently involved in a content dispute over at Talk:Certis CISCO over a seemingly "inappriopriate" list of incidents by users who do not seem to be otherwise particularly concerned or interested in Law Enforcement matters. Would appreciate anyone who may offer their opinions there. Thanks!--Huaiwei (talk) 17:36, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Single standard law enforcement agency info box

Folks,

There seems to be a growing number of partially tailored infbox templates for law enforcement agencies. This means that one never really knows what to expect or where to quickly find material when one looks at a law enforcement agency article. I have put together a single standard, User:Pee Tern/Sandbox/Template/Infobox Law enforcement agency, to remove the divergence. I am still working on it, but would like to move into Template space soon. In the mean time, can people have a look at it and make suggestions please.

Duplicate categories ??!!

Can anyone tell me what the difference between Category:Law enforcement organizations and Category:Law enforcement organizations is ? Pee Tern (talk) 05:50, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Appears to be the same category? SGGH speak! 09:30, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
So if I worked over time to combine them it would be no problem ?
It has occured to me since that perhaps LEO should be LEA plus informal organisations such as viglante groups, self formed civil militias, etc. ??
Pee Tern (talk) 11:07, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
No, I mean that they are in fact the same category you have just put two links to the same thing... if you check one of the articles in it for example you will find only one category at the bottom. They aren't duplicates, there is only one of them. SGGH speak! 11:59, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi everyone, I was poking around on the Project's pages, and when I clicked on one of the images I realized that although they were under a free License they were not on Wikimedia Commons. Therefore, I have just moved all of the Images onto the Commons and now that they are on the commons I was wondering if SGGH or another admin could delete the Images from Wikipedia being that they are now on the Commons.

The Following Images were moved to the Commons:

Note: The Images are on the Commons under the exact name so the templates that currently use the Images should not be affected when the Images are deleted from Wikipedia; they will automatically switch to using the Commons version.

If SGGH or another Admin could delete those Images for me being that I moved them to the commons it would be much appreciated. Thanks, --Mifter (talk) 21:47, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

A little help please

I put the new infobox into the article Carmel Police but I cant't get the wording around the image of the patch to go away, can someone who is good at this stuff help me with that please?? Also, I can't get the "polcie animal" info. to appear when I fill in the info. Thanks in advance for the help. EMT1871 (talk) 13:28, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
  • The template only needs the name of the image for all its images. The template provides the image link and parameters, so it was doubling up and getting confused.   Done
  • The animals problem was my fault. A typo in the useage skeleton. The animals parameters are numbered too. I had left off the number. I have put an example entry on the Town of Carmel, New York Police Department page   Done which I presume you will need to change.
  • I have also taken the liberty of adding in the agency characteristics, of Police and Local.   Done However, this is what you have put in overviewtype as Municipal Police Department. I note that the phrase Municipal Police Department is a standard in the United States, but I am not aware that it is at all universal, that is a world view, so at the momement the template does not cater for it. Comment ?
  • The template expects at the moment that governingbody is the actual governing body. Rather than 'Town Board', it might be better to have 'Carmel Town Board', but governing body is meant to be the body which makes the laws that the lea enforces.
  • Also, perhaps, overviewtype should be Town Board and overviewbody should be Carmel Town Board?
  • You must be one of the first people to use the new template so any feedback and sugegstions for improvements will be greatly appreciated.

Just to advise that I have added some more features to the new {{Infobox Law enforcement agency}}:

  • A secondary governing body, for example for use with, state and local, federal and state
  • Headquarters location map
  • Override default titles of Sworn and Unsworn
  • Notables section for key significant notable people, operations, awards, programmes, anniversaries.
  • Legal personality - for non government LEAs

WikiBreak

Hi everyone, From April 9th until April 29th, I will be on a vacation and as such will not be on Wikipedia at all during that time. Cheers and Happy Editing, I will be returning on the 29th--Mifter (talk) 20:39, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Snapshot information box now available for articles related to an LEA when not the main article.

A snapshot information boxes can now be built for law enforcement agency articles in general.

If you want to have the main infobox in the main article but also reference copies as summary information in related articles, you would have to create a template.

You still have to create a template, and this can be done using the new {{Infobox Law enforcement agency}} template BUT it collapses the infobox in the related article automatically.

For example, in the related articles you would have {{Federal Bureau of Investigation |infotype=related }}

Converting captain to a dab page?

I've opened a discussion on the Captain article's talk page about converting that article to a dab page. Since the it's tagged as a WikiProject Law Enforcement page, I thought I'd mention it here. Cheers. HausTalk 17:06, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Infobox categorisation

Can I just say that I believe it is a very, very bad idea to have infoboxes that automatically categorise articles. Categorisation should always be manually added. This infobox provides a perfect example of why. All American law enforcement agencies get bunged into Category:United States law enforcement agencies, whereas I worked long and hard to establish separate subcategories for the many different types of law enforcement agencies in the United States. We really don't want every one of the thousands of agencies in the USA in a single category. -- Necrothesp (talk) 17:55, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

No one, least of all me, is suggesting that any subcategories be removed. However, in line with Wikiepdia's world view policy, I am trying to get a minimum common standard in place for all LEAs across the world. Having different base categorisation schemes for different countries makes it difficult to know what to expect and what to look for. I urge you to take a world view and accept a minimum common base categorisation for all counties' LEAs.
Please note that I may not have internet access over the next few days, and two weeks, so I may not be able to get back to you for any further discussion, as soon as I would like to.
Peet Ern (talk) 13:44, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
However, Wikipedia guidelines also state that as few categories should be used as possible and that if a sucategory is used then its parent category generally shouldn't be used as well, as stated in the first line of Wikipedia:Categorization and subcategories. I maintain that categorisation should be manual and not forced on editors by infoboxes (which I'm afraid I find exceptionally intrusive, unnecessary and unencyclopaedic in any case). The scheme in some countries has to be different. The USA, in particular, has thousands of law enforcement agencies, whereas most countries only have a few - it is not desirable therefore to have them all in a parent category as well as the subcategories. -- Necrothesp (talk) 08:28, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
I agree that double categorisation is not right. I have modified the template to only categorise by country if the country division categorisation is not available.
Certainly it takes some control away from editors, but it seems that this might be helpful for a lot of them.
Can you expand on why you feel it is unencylcopedic? The way I see it, it enhances the encylcopedic value, rigor, and consistency of Wikipedia.
Sorry, but while I would like to learn much more about this aspect of Wikipedia, I will have not have any access to the Internet now for about 4 or 5 days.
